The readings this Sunday seem to focus on generosity. The prophet Elijah asks an impoverished widow, who has almost nothing, to be generous. And she is. The letter to the Hebrews states that Jesus’ offering of himself is an act of giving so substantial that it does not have to be repeated. In the Gospel a widow

gives of her substance, in contrast to the rich who give a lot from their abundance but who have a lot more to give. The first reading hints that these scriptures are not only about giving. They are also about fear. Elijah tells the widow, “Do not be afraid” to give your all. The depth of generosity that God asks of us is

only possible if we let go of our fear.

giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by

The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires

Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Call To Discipleship

Be Not Afraid

Kings, overcome that fear to place their reliance on God. The wealthy, as we have seen before in the Gospels, have a lot more to give away before they would need to put their reliance entirely on God. Many cannot find the strength and courage to do so. They give big gifts to the temple thinking

this will bring them favor, as it does in the world. But God asks more of us than the world does. God asks that we live our lives as if they depended entirely on God and not our own accomplishments. Because they do.

It is clear that God prefers the widow’s generosity because it displays a lack of fear about what will happen if she leaves her life entirely in God’s hands. The widow, who lacks material goods, still fears for her welfare and that of her family but both widows, in Mark and in

Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the “Great War”) on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier’s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or “chapel,” the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as “Saint Martin’s Lent” or “Martinmas,” that later developed into the season of Advent. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

vision, but from someone’s cry for help.

I wonder how many good people have passed up a chance to do God’s will because they didn’t hear directly from God what to do. When you hear that a tornado destroyed a nearby neighborhood, do you hear God asking you to help? Do you hear God’s voice when you read in the bulletin that the food pantry is running low?

I always thought it took a lot of nerve for Elijah to beg that poor woman for a meal. Even though, during a long drought, she has only a bit of her food to give to her son, he still asks her to make a little cake for himself. It would be easier to understand if we heard the verse before this reading begins: God tells the prophet that he has “commanded a widow…to feed you.” (1Kgs 17:9)

Now the widow was not aware of this command. But she does as Elijah asked. That took even more faith than Elijah showed. She was afraid for herself and the boy. But she had enough faith to risk the last of her food to help someone else. She shows us that we are obeying God’s commands when we trust him. Most of those commands come not from a

When a storm knocks out the power on your block, do you think God is asking you to check on the elderly widow next door?

And if you do hear God calling in these examples, how do you respond? You can be like the rich people in the gospel and just give your ten percent. Or do you have the faith of the woman whose few cents were all that she had. It takes a lot of courage to trust God completely. Do you have what it takes? Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
