Making Healthy Placesdesigning and building for health, Well-being, and sustainabilityEdited by Andrew L. Dannenberg, Howard Frumkin, and Richard J. Jackson
Thoughtful observations on the effects the built environment has on health and the natural environment—and solutions to minimize these concerns
The environment that we construct affects both humans and our natural world in myriad ways. There is a pressing need to create healthy places and to reduce the health threats inherent in places already built. However, there has been little awareness of the adverse effects of what we have constructed—or the positive benefits of well-designed built environments.
This book provides a far-reaching follow-up to the pathbreaking Urban Sprawl and Public Health, published in 2004. That book sparked a range of inquiries into the connections between constructed environments, particularly cities and suburbs, and the health of human residents. Since then, numerous studies have extended and refined the book’s research and reporting. Making Healthy Places offers a fresh and comprehensive look at this vital subject today.
There is no other book with the depth, breadth, vision, and accessibility that this book offers. In addition to being of particular interest to undergraduate and graduate students in public health and urban planning, it will be essential reading for public health officials, planners, architects, landscape architects, environmentalists, and all those who care about the design of their communities.
Like a well-trained doctor, Making Healthy Places presents a diagnosis of—and offers treatment for—problems related to the built environment. Drawing on the latest scientific evidence, with contributions from experts in a range of fields, it imparts a wealth of practical information, with an emphasis on demonstrated and promising solutions to commonly occurring problems.
Andrew L. Dannenberg, M.d., M.P.h., serves as a consultant to and formerly was team lead-er of the healthy Community design Initiative in the national Center for environmental health at the Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CdC). he is an affiliate professor at the University of Washington, seattle. Howard Frumkin, M.d., dr.P.h., is dean of the school of Public health at the University of Washington. Richard J. Jack-son, M.d., M.P.h., is Professor and Chair of the department of environmental health sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. Frumkin and Jackson are coauthors of Urban Sprawl and Public Health.

Practical strategies for a successful and meaningful career in science
It’s a tough time to be a scientist: universities are shuttering science departments, federal funding agencies are facing flat budgets, and many newspapers have dropped their science sections altogether. But according to Marc Kuchner, this
antiscience climate doesn’t have to equal a career death knell—it just means scientists have to be savvier about promoting their work and themselves. In Marketing for Scientists, he provides clear, detailed advice about how to land a good job, win funding, and shape the public debate.
As an astrophysicist at NASA, Kuchner knows that “marketing” can seem like a superficial distraction, whether your daily work is searching for new planets or seeking a cure for cancer. In fact, he argues, it’s a critical component of the modern scientific endeavor, not only advancing personal careers but also society’s knowledge.
Kuchner approaches marketing as a science in itself. He translates theories about human interaction and sense of self into methods for building relationships—one of the most critical skills in any profession. And he explains how to brand yourself effectively—how to get articles published, give compelling presentations, use social media like Facebook and Twitter, and impress potential employers and funders.
Like any good scientist, Kuchner bases his conclusions on years of study and experimentation. In Marketing for Scientists, he distills the strategies needed to keep pace in a Web 2.0 world.

“Grossman profiles the worst offenders, including bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, but she also portrays the good guys who are com-ing to the rescue, John Warner and Paul Anastas, founders of the burgeoning green chemistry movement. Green chemistry aims to re-place hazardous synthetic chemicals with chemicals that are ‘benign by design.’ Grossman’s clarion expose should give this lifesaving initiative a big boost.” —bookLiSt
Elizabeth Grossman, an acclaimed journalist who brought national attention to the contaminants hidden in computers and other high-tech electronics, now tackles the hazards of ordinary consumer products. She shows that for the sake of convenience, efficiency, and short-term safety, we have created synthetic chemicals that fundamentally change, at a molecular level, the way our bodies work. The consequences range from diabetes to cancer, reproductive and neurological disorders.

What makes a public transportation system successful?
Public transit is a powerful tool for addressing a huge range of urban problems, including traffic congestion and economic development as well as
climate change. But while many people support transit in the abstract, it’s often hard to channel that support into good transit investments. Part of the problem is that transit debates attract many kinds of experts, who often talk past each other. Ordinary people listen to a little of this and decide that transit is impossible to figure out.
Jarrett Walker believes that transit can be simple, if we focus first on the underlying geometry that all transit technologies share. In Human Transit, Walker supplies the basic tools, the critical questions, and the means to make smarter decisions about designing and implementing transit services.
Human Transit explains the fundamental geometry of transit that shapes successful systems; the process for fitting technology to a particular community; and the local choices that lead to transit-friendly development. Whether you are in the field or simply a concerned citizen, here is an accessible guide to achieving successful public transit that will enrich any community.

Ideas That Matterthe Worlds of Jane JacobsEdited by Max Allen
Unique insights into the work of a legendary urban critic
Jane Jacobs (1916–2006) is history’s most celebrated urban critic. In addition to her classic, Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jacobs authored another half dozen influential books on urban planning, economics, and design. She was also a tireless advo-cate of vibrant city neighborhoods. Ideas That Matter: The Worlds of Jane Jacobs offers students, enthusiasts, and critics unprec-edented insights into the work of this seminal thinker.
Originally published in 1997, and continually sought after ever since, this 2011 edition includes a new introduction by distin-guished urban scholar Mary Rowe.
The book is a unique combination of Jacobs’s own writing (in-cluding previously unpublished speeches, letters, and articles), biography, and analysis by other scholars.
Arranged by topic, it sheds light both on the development of Jacobs’s theories and on her life. A chapter on Death and Life of American Cities reveals a debate between the author and her publisher about changing the book’s title. A section on Europe includes letters home from Frankfurt, Paris, London, Venice, and other cities that shaped her sensibilities. And a chapter titled “Ideas” offers analysis from ten contributors who examine Jacobs’s thoughts on issues from population growth to urban infill, self-employment to the wealth of nations.
What results is a captivating scrapbook, offering a distinctive understanding of Jacobs’s most important ideas.

Planning, Architecture, & Design
Revised to include the latest developments in the field, new research, and case studies
Since the first publication of this landmark textbook in 2004, it has received high praise for its clear, comprehensive, and practical approach.
The second edition continues to offer a unique framework for teaching and learning interdisciplinary environmental planning and addresses emerging challenges for planners including climate change and new methods, technologies, designs, and policies for responding to these challenges.
The book has been reorganized based on feedback from instructors, and contains additional case studies and a new chapter entitled “Land Use, Energy, Air Quality and Climate Change.” Throughout, boxes have been added on such topics as federal laws, state and local environmental programs, and critical problems and responses.
This new edition addresses three broad subject areas. “Environmental Planning and Management” provides an overview of the field, along with the fundamentals of land use planning, and presents a collaborative approach to environmental planning. “Sustainable Land Use Principles and Planning Analysis” considers environmental and geospatial information; soils, topography, and land use; stream flow, flooding, and runoff; stormwater management and stream restoration; groundwater hydrology; landscape ecology; wildlife habitats and biodiversity; energy, air quality, and climate change; and methods for land analysis. “Managing Watersheds, Ecosystems and Development to Achieve Sustainable Communities” explains the principles of ecosystem management, restoration, and protection; smart growth and sustainable design; land conservation; and the mitigation of natural hazards.
With this thoroughly revised second edition, Environmental Land Use Planning and Management maintains its preeminence as the leading textbook in its field.

In the absence of federal leadership, states and localities are stepping forward to address critical problems like climate change, urban sprawl, and polluted water and air. Fortunately, they have dynamic, innovative models outside US borders. Green Cities of Europe draws on the world’s best examples of sustainability to show how other cities can become greener and more livable.
Timothy Beatley has brought together leading experts from Paris, Freiburg, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Heidelberg, Venice, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and London to illustrate groundbreaking practices in urban planning. These cities are creating greenways, improving public transit, conserving energy, instituting “green audits” for government, and strengthening their city centers.
With Green Cities of Europe, Beatley offers the US planning community not only a vision of holistic sustainability, but a clear guide to accomplishing it at home.
Timothy Beatley is teresa heinz Professor of sustainable Communities in the department of Urban and environmental Planning, in the school of architecture at the University of Virginia, where he has taught for more than twenty years. he is the author of many books, including Biophilic Cities, Resilient Cities, and Green Urbanism (Island Press).

This trailblazing book outlines a tested interdisciplinary “process model” for urban design. Its goal is not to explain how to design a specific city precinct or public space, but to describe useful steps to approach the transformation of urban spaces. Urban Ecological Design illustrates the different stages in which the process is organized, using theories, techniques, images, and case studies.
The authors believe that environmental concerns demand that ecological and sustainability issues are addressed in urban design. It is, after all, the urban designer who helps to orchestrate human relationships with other living organisms in the built environment.
The overall objective of the book is to reinforce the role of the urban designer as an honest broker and promoter of design processes and as an active agent of social creativity in the production of the public realm.

Planning, Architecture, & Design
This is the first book designed to help planners, municipal staff and officials, citizens and others working at local levels to develop Climate Action Plans. CAPs are strategic plans that establish policies and programs for mitigating a community’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. They typically focus on transportation, energy use, and solid waste. CAPs are usually based on GHG emissions inventories, which identify the sources of emissions from the community and quantify amounts. CAPs may also address adaptation—how the community will respond to the local impacts of climate change, such as increased flooding, extended drought, or sea level rise.
With examples drawn from actual plans, Local Climate Action Planning guides preparers of CAPs through the entire plan development process, identifying the key considerations and choices that must be made in order to assure that a plan is both workable and effective.

“Transfer of Development Rights” (TDR) programs allow local governments to employ economic principles to encourage good land use planning. TDR programs most often permit landowners to forfeit development rights in areas targeted for preservation and then sell those development rights to buyers who want to build high-density projects in designated growth areas.
The TDR Handbook is the first comprehensive guide to every aspect of TDR programs, from the thinking behind them to the nuts and bolts of implementation—including statutory guidance, model ordinances, suggestions for program administration, and comparisons with other types of preservation programs. In addition, six of its twenty chapters are devoted to case studies of all major uses for which TDR programs have been utilized to date, including protecting farmland, environmentally sensitive land, historic sites, “rural character,” and urban revitalization.

In My Kind of Transit, Darrin Nordahl argues that like life itself, transportation isn’t only about the destination, but the journey. Public transit reduces traffic and pollution, yet few of us are willing to get out of our cars and onto subways and buses. But Nordahl demonstrates that when using public transit is an enjoyable experience, tourists and commuters alike willingly hand in their keys.
My Kind of Transit is an animated tour of successful transportation systems, offering smart, commonsense analysis of what makes transit fun. Nordahl draws on examples like the iconic street cars of New Orleans and the picturesque cable cars in San Francisco, describing universal principles of good transit design. His humanistic treatment will help planners, designers, transportation professionals, and policymakers create transit systems the public actually wants to ride.
Darrin Nordahl is the city designer at the davenport design Center, which was formed in 2003 as a division of the Community & economic development department of the City of davenport, Iowa. he has taught in the planning program at the University of California at berkeley and is the author of Public Produce: The New Urban Agriculture (Island Press).

City Rules offers a challenge to students and professionals in urban planning, design, and policy to change the rules of city-building, using regulations to reinvigorate, rather than stifle, our communities. Emily Talen demonstrates that rules like zoning and subdivision regulation are primary determinants of urban form. While many contemporary codes encourage sprawl and even urban blight, that hasn’t always been the case—and it shouldn’t be in the future.
Talen provides a visually rich history, showing how certain eras used rules to produce beautiful, walkable communities, while others created just the opposite. She makes complex regulations understandable, demystifying zoning and illustrating how written rules translate into real-world consequences. Most importantly, Talen proposes changes to these rules that will actually enhance communities’ freedom to develop unique spaces.
Emily Talen is Professor in the school of Geographical sciences and Urban Planning and director of the Phoenix Urban research lab at Arizona State University. she is also Coeditor of the Journal of Urbanism.

Ecosystem Studies
A landmark contribution that outlines the history of the field of ecological restoration
Making Nature Whole is a seminal volume that presents an in-depth history of the field of ecological restoration as it has developed in the United States over the last three decades. The authors draw
from both published and unpublished sources, including archival materials and oral histories from early practitioners, to explore the development of the field and its importance to environmental management as well as to the larger environmental movement and our understanding of the world.
Considering antecedents as varied as monastic gardens, the Scientific Revolution, and the emerging nature-awareness of nineteenth-century Romantics and Transcendentalists, Jordan and Lubick offer unique insight into the field’s philosophical and theoretical underpinnings. They examine specifically the more recent history, including the story of those who first attempted to re-create natural ecosystems early in the twentieth century, as well as those who over the past few decades have realized the value of this approach not only as a critical element in conservation but also as a context for negotiating the ever-changing relationship between humans and the natural environment.
Making Nature Whole is a landmark contribution, providing context and history regarding a distinctive form of land management and giving readers a fascinating overview of the development of the field. It is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding where ecological restoration came from or where it might be going.

Introduction to Restoration EcologyEvelyn A. Howell, John A. Harrington, and Stephen B. Glass
A new textbook that offers a real-life introduction to the field of restoration ecology
Restoration ecology is a young field that integrates theory and knowledge from a range of disciplines, including the biological, physical, and social sciences as well as the humanities. This new textbook, written for upper-division undergraduates and first-year graduate students, offers a real-life introduction to the field and an interdisciplinary overview of the theory behind it.
Developed by ecologists and landscape architects, each of whom has been involved in restoration research and practice for many years, the focus of the book is on providing a framework that can be used to guide restoration decisions anywhere on the globe, both now and in the future. The text is organized around a restoration process that has been tested and revised by the authors in their restoration ecology courses taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison over the past thirty years.
Each chapter includes a series of “Food for Thought” questions that both help students review concepts and put them to work in solving conservation problems. The framework is designed to work with the uniqueness, uncertainty, messiness, and constraints inherent in any real-world restoration project.
Success in ecological restoration requires not only technical proficiency but also skill in the social, cultural, and political arenas. Introduction to Restoration Ecology can help students develop the skills they need to succeed in all of these areas and is a much-needed new resource.
Evelyn A. Howell, plant ecologist, and John A. Harrington, landscape architect, are professors in the department of landscape architecture, University of Wisconsin-Madison. together they have taught a four-course restoration ecology sequence since 1984. Steve B. Glass, restoration ecologist, has been restoration Planner and Fire Manager at the University of Wisconsin-Madison arboretum since 1989.

A comprehensive and accessible reference for practitioners to use in planning and executing plant reintroductions
Considered an essential conservation tool, plant reintroductions have been conducted for many of
the world’s rarest plant species. The expertise and knowledge gained through these efforts constitute an essential storehouse of information for conservationists faced with a rapidly changing global climate.
This volume presents a comprehensive review of reintroduction projects and practices, the circumstances of their successes or failures, lessons learned, and the potential role for reintroductions in preserving species threatened by climate change. Contributors examine current plant reintroduction practices, from selecting appropriate source material and recipient sites to assessing population demography.
The findings culminate in a set of Best Reintroduction Practice Guidelines, included in an appendix. These guidelines cover stages from planning and implementation to long-term monitoring, and offer not only recommended actions but also checklists of questions to consider that are applicable to projects around the world.
Traditional reintroduction practice can inform managed relocation—the deliberate movement of species outside their native range—which may be the only hope for some species to persist in a natural environment. Included in the book are discussions of the history, fears, and controversy regarding managed relocation, along with protocols for evaluating invasive risk and proposals for conducting managed relocation of rare plants.
Plant Reintroduction in a Changing Climate is a comprehensive and accessible reference for practitioners to use in planning and executing rare plant reintroductions.

Saving a Million Speciesextinction risk from Climate ChangeEdited by Lee HannahForeword by Thomas E. Lovejoy
A clear explanation of the science behind estimates of extinction risk from climate change
The research paper “Extinction Risk from Climate Change” published in the journal Nature in January 2004 created front-page headlines around the world. The notion that climate change could drive more than a million species to extinction captured both the popular imagination and the attention of policymakers, and provoked an unprecedented round of scientific critique.
Saving a Million Species reconsiders the central question of that paper: How many species may perish as a result of climate change and associated threats? Leaders from a range of disciplines synthesize the literature, refine the original estimates, and elaborate the conservation and policy implications.
The book:
examines the initial extinction risk estimates of the original paper, subsequent critiques, and the media and policy impact of this unique studypresents evidence of extinctions from climate change from different time frames in the pastexplores extinctions documented in the contemporary recordsets forth new risk estimates for future climate changeconsiders the conservation and policy implications of the estimates
Saving a Million Species offers a clear explanation of the science behind the headline-grabbing estimates for conservationists, researchers, teachers, students, and policymakers. It is a critical resource for helping those working to conserve biodiversity take on the rapidly advancing and evolving global stressor of climate change—the most important issue in conservation biology today, and the one for which we are least prepared.

Restoring Ecological Health to Your Land, published by Island Press in 2009, was the first practical guidebook to give restorationists and would-be restorationists with little or no scientific background the “how to” information and knowledge they need to plan and implement ecological restoration activities.
This companion workbook describes more fully the planning tools and techniques outlined in the book and offers a wealth of specific resources, including worksheets and spreadsheets to help you determine what equipment and plant materials you need, create project schedules, monitor results, and estimate costs. The tools offered will help you collect and process the information you need to make good decisions about your projects and are an invaluable resource for anyone thinking about or working on a hands-on restoration project.
Steven I. Apfelbaum is Chairman of applied ecological services and has been active in teaching and practicing ecological restoration for more than thirty years. Alan Haney is a forest ecologist and former dean of the College of natural resources, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

This new book examines past experience and future directions in the management of so-called “wicked” environmental problems—those characterized by large-scale, long-term policy dilemmas and contentious political stalemates. Most important, the book reviews current thinking on the way forward, focusing on the implementation of “learning networks,” in which public managers, technical experts, and public stakeholders collaborate in decision-making processes that are analytic, iterative, and deliberative.
Wicked Environmental Problems offers new approaches for managing environmental conflicts and shows how managers could apply these approaches within common, real-world statutory decision-making frameworks. It is essential reading for anyone concerned with managing environmental problems.

There’s a simple, straightforward way to cut carbon emissions—and we’re rejecting it because of irrational political fears. That’s the central argument of The Case for a Carbon Tax, a clear-eyed, sophisticated analysis of climate change policy.
Shi-Ling Hsu weighs the merits of the four major approaches to curbing CO2: cap-and-trade; command and control regulation; government subsidies of alternative energy; and carbon taxes. He does not claim that a tax is the perfect or only solution—but that unlike the alternatives, it can be implemented immediately and paired effectively with other approaches.
Hsu deftly explores the social and political factors that prevent us from embracing this commonsense approach. And he shows why we must get past our hang-ups if we are to avert a global crisis.
Shi-Ling Hsu is associate Professor at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law. Previously, he was associate Professor at the George Washington University law school, senior attorney and economist for the environmental law Institute in Washington, dC and deputy City attorney for the City and County of san Francisco.

Reporting on Climate Change is a guide for reporters, educators, and other communicators on the current understanding about the science of global climate change. This bestselling guide is the fourth in a series initially intended to help journalists—both reporters and editors—understand and report on the most authoritative scientific findings involving the far-ranging issues related to global climate change. Initially conceived to be exclusively for journalists and editors, it has evolved over time as a resource also for formal and informal climate science educators and for other communicators needing a “plain English” grasp of climate science.
Replete with four-color charts, graphs, and alarming photos of what climate change has done to our planet’s landscape, this new edition provides readers with timely updates to recent events in the ongoing climate debate, including the UK ClimateGate scandal, as well as new developments in the science itself. For reporters covering a story who are generalists rather than specialists in science or environmental writing, this guide can be of help to “get up to speed” on the chemistry and physical sciences that produce weather and climate as we understand them.

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) was enacted as an amendment to the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, and is a combination of the first solid waste statutes and all subsequent amendments.
RCRA is a complex area, and the misinterpretation of its requirements goes to the heart of environmental compliance and protection. Problems may arise that cause major delays in processing permits and modifications, resulting in unnecessary costs not only for those seeking a permit, but also for the permitting authorities. The Deskbook provides a comprehensive, peer-reviewed overview of the substantive permitting requirements for treatment, storage, and disposal facilities and incorporates relevant legal research by identifying major administrative, federal, and state court decisions.

The term “rights-based approach” (RBA) has been used in various contexts and defined in different ways. This publication applies the approach specifically in exploring the linkages between conservation and respect for internationally and nationally guaranteed human rights. The aim is to promote the realization of conservation with justice, recognizing that activities and projects related to conservation can have a positive or negative impact on human rights, while the exercise of certain human rights can reinforce and act in synergy with conservation goals. The publication introduces the concept of RBA and examines how it is currently being applied (or not) and how it may be applied to develop law and policy.

What makes our planet’s natural treasures worth saving, and why should we care? With hundreds of stunning full-color photographs and more than twenty essays from some of the world’s most respected scientists, this latest publication in the CEMEX Conservation Book Series aims to provide some of these answers. With scientific analyses, The Wealth of Nature offers a detailed explanation of the various ecosystem services that support and regulate all natural processes on Earth. It also provides cultural context for how these services are vital for our existence and why their futures—and ours—are at risk.
The Wealth of Nature maps out the state of our global resources and clarifies the choices that lie before us. It is within our grasp to adapt to the conditions we have created and to mitigate our impact on the future, but the window of opportunity is closing. Take a moment and come and see the award-winning nature photographers capture Earth’s intricate web of life and the solutions we are working toward.

The Draft Covenant is a blueprint for an international framework (or umbrella) agreement consolidating and developing existing le-gal principles related to environment and development. Since the publication of the second edition in 2000, there have been impor-tant developments in the field of international environmental law.
This revised edition takes account of these changes, following a re-view of important new treaties and soft law documents, including the Johannesburg Declaration and Plan of Implementation. This publication serves as an authoritative reference and checklist for legislators, civil servants and other stakeholders worldwide when drafting new or updating existing policies and law.

New Books from Techne
Changing Places investigates the process of change in European neighborhoods over the last twenty years, both newly and purposely built and redeveloped ones. Eckhardt and Cremaschi show that change takes many varied and complex paths, rather than the mainstream simplified model of general urban evolution. Changing Places collects a series of case studies, and includes various European cities such as Marseille, Rome, Naples, Warsaw, Frankfurt, Athens, Copenhagen, Lisbon, and Ørestad, thus providing a broad European overview.Professor Dr. Frank Eckhardt is professor at the Weimar Bauhaus University, and chair of the sociology of globalization and the mediacity project. Dr. Marco Cremaschi is associate professor at the department of Urban studies at the University of Rome III and visiting professor at Cornell University, at the department of City and regional Planning.
Changing PlacesUrbanity, Citizenship, and Ideology in the new european neighbourhoods
Edited by Frank Eckhardt and Marco Cremaschi
Making Room for People explores the conditions under which the choice and voice of residents contribute to more livable and sustainable urban areas. A number of Dutch cases illustrate the outcomes of recent policy measures, participatory design processes, novel projects, as well as the effects of nonparticipatory behavior.
Dr. Lei Qu is a researcher at the Technical University of Delft, spatial Planning and strategy department. Dr. Evert Hasselaar researches sustainable renovations and healthy housing conditions and is affiliated to the Otb research Institute for the built environment, the netherlands.
Making Room for PeopleChoice, voice and liveability in residential PlacesEdited by Lei Qu and Evert Hasselaar
In ten essays, leading Dutch environmentalists present their vision on the interplay of sustainability and technology. Can globalization be reconciled with sustainable development? Is sustainability a subjective or an objective concept? How can we find a balance between technological risk and “sustainable safety”? What are the real environmental benefits of new technologies? Is “cradle to cradle” a solution? And what are the limits of renewable sources of energy?
Contributions by Jan J. Boersema, Hans Opschoor, Pieter Glasbergen, Egbert Tellegen, Jacqueline Cramer, Charles Vlek, David Pimentel, Ad Ragas, Mark Huijbregts, Carolien Kroeze, Kornelis Blok, and others.
It invites the reader to think critically about these issues, and consider the implications that sustainability has on society, the environment, and technology.
Technology and SustainabilityEdited by Carolien Kroeze, Jan Boersema, Egbert Tellegen, and Annemarie Cremers
