Grand Prix of Canada 2014

Celebrated as one of the most popular races for both spectators and Formula One teams alike.

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

Lap distance: 4.361km/2.709 miles

Race: 56 Laps, 305.270 km/189.685 miles

In the 1960s the rivalry between French and English speaking Canada meant that the country’s Grand Prix had two homes: Mosport Park one year and Mont-Tremblant the next. By 1970, however, Mont-Tremblant was deemed too dangerous and the race moved full time to Mosport Park.

In 1977 the French Canadians, motivated by the incredible success of Gilles Villeneuve, decided it was about time they built a race track. Building a new circuit simply wasn’t feasible, however, as time and money were against them. Their solution was simple and effective. Taking the Ile Notre-Dame, they connected all the island’s roads and made a circuit. The island had been the home of the 1967 World Fair (Expo’67) and was full of futuristic looking buildings. It was, everyone agreed, a perfect venue for a Grand Prix.

After $2m was spent on upgrading the circuit to Formula One standards, the first race was held there in October 1978. Gilles Villeneuve, in his first season with Ferrari, was yet to win a Formula One race, but at his home Grand Prix he took a memorable debut victory. Following his tragic death in 1982, the track was renamed in his honour.

His son, Jacques, never won at the track but some of the great drivers of the sport have taken the spoils here. Michael Schumacher holds the record of having won seven times in Canada. It is also the scene of Jean Alesi’s single Grand Prix victory in 1995, driving the number 27 Ferrari, the same car number which carried Gilles Villeneuve into the hearts of the Canadian Formula One fans.

2014 Special Guests

Two-time F1 World Champion, Emerson FittipaldiFamed racer Emerson Fittipaldi hosted guests in the Legends Club Montréal at the 2013 Grand Prix of Canada on Sunday, June 9th at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Emerson Fittipaldi has won world championships in both Formula One and CART, and the Indianapolis 500 twice. At the time of his first world championship win with Lotus, he was the youngest driver, at age 25, to take the Formula One’s top honour, a record that would stand until Fernando Alonso won the 2005 title. After switching to McLaren, he took his second World Championship title and solidified his place amongst the grand prix legends.

In addition to his Formula One history on the track as a driver, Fittipaldi has also served as a Formula One Steward. Three race stewards are appointed at each Grand Prix to make decisions including driver penalties. Fittipaldi has served as steward several times including at the 2010 and 2011 Grand Prix of Canada and 2010 Grand Prix of Italy.

Grandson of legendary Emerson Fittipaldi, Pietro FittipaldiPietro Fittipaldi, grandson of F1-legend Emerson, has taken his maiden single seater race win in race one at Brands Hatch July 27th after late drama on the Grand Prix circuit.

He had been running in a comfortable third place having started second, but moved past Charlie Robertson late on, and then passed an ailing Jake Hughes on the last lap to claim his first win. Fittipaldi follows in the footsteps of his grandfather who also claimed his first win in Europe at Brands Hatch in 1969 in Formula Ford 1600.

“When I saw the chequered flag I couldn’t believe I was the first one to cross it, it was awesome!” he exclaimed afterwards. “I just kept my cool on track and was really consistent all the way around and I can’t believe I’ve got this win in my first year!”

Formula 1 Journalist, Peter WindsorPeter Windsor will provide guests with expert pre and post race analyses at the Legends Club Montréal during Sunday’s race. His insights are informative and interesting due to his long career within the sport of auto racing. A former F1 team manager, Mr. Windsor is now the host of online racing show “The Flying Lap” and reports frequently on his blog “The Race Driver”.

One of a kind motorsport art at the Legends Club MontréalMontréal-based graphic artist, Serge Dumont, will make a special appearance at this year’s Grand Prix of Canada within the Legends Club Montréal. Mr. Dumont is known for his innovative and unique automotive art, which has been featured all over the world at various F1 events. In addition to displaying his art throughout the suite, Mr. Dumont creates a live painting during the event which is given as a prize to a contest winner who predicts the results of the race.

Dumont captures the intensity of Formula One racing so perfectly that you can almost smell the heat and feel the movement of the cars. From his imagination, he gives you a perspective that takes your breath away. His compositions seem to capture the unique personality of each team.
