photo diary of an employeee 1996 - 2011
15 years in formula one
The photo on the cover is nearly identical to Gianni Giansanti’s cover for his book "A day on stage." It was Gianni himself who explained to me how to obtain this effect and to his friendship, patience and passion I dedicate this collection of memories. Silverstone Test, 22 February 2005.
TESTING
My first Silverstone test with Jordan in the Spring of 1997. Giancarlo was asked to prove how quick he was in order to obtain a drive alongside Ralf Schumacher. Which he did, and it was good as my contract as his interpreter and English teacher was also renewed!
Silverstone test, Spring of 1997. Giancarlo during one of the long waitings in the car between stints
During test visits marketing guests can get much more action than during a race...this is as close as it gets
Another benefit of test days: a relaxed Giancarlo is more than happy to mingle with guests during this Monza event in 2001
My new colleague Emma was not too impressed with noise levels at her first Barcelona test in 2002
During tests the car often goes back to the garage for changes and checks. The activity is frantic and drivers oftnen wait strapped in the cockpit while mechanics prepare the car for the next stint. Jarno Trulli, Paul-Ricard, May 2003
Opposite: 2002 Barcelona test – Ralf Schumacher brakes hard at the end of the main straight
Concentration, concentration, concentration: these two shots show the intensity of it when drivers wait in the car

Oh no...them again! Allan McNish at Paul-Ricard, May 2003 All right then, but only one...
Not now please! I am too busy... I am too polite...
Fernando's concentration in the Monza garage, September 2003 Opposite: Michael Schumacher, Parabolica, Monza test 2003
Concentration again in the garage. Data engineers at Barcelona test Previous page: Fernando Alonso completes another lap at Monza test

Different year, same goal
Heikki makes sure the intake of carbo-hydrates is sufficient to face his afternoon testing duties!
Giancarlo Fisichella, Barcelona test,
Not now please!
Concentration, concentration, concentration: these two shots show the intensity of it when drivers sit in the car
After all it says “Team Spirit” all over the place…

A mean pit-crew waiting for their call
An unlikely scenario: pit-stop in the snow. Silverstone test
May 2003, Paul-Ricard test, Frank Montagny in colourful action
Fernando discusses driving antics with his testing colleague...
Was Phil checking the delivery of some spare parts from Enstone or taking advantage of a free moment to call home?
2005 Silverstone test: practice makes perfect
A joking pose before attending his driving duties…
The joke is long forgotten, once the helmet is on drivers plunge nto their own world
Jerez test 2007: all is quiet at 6:25 AM but in a few hors the sun will have no pity on drivers, spectators and team members. Temperatures in the high 40s are not unusual here
RACING
During the race I am too busy to take photos of cars in action...there are much better photographers than me doing that anyway! Most of these images are "backstage" and podiums like this shot of Sean clearly enjoying Fernando's victory in the 2005 German GP.
Monza 2002, and Fernando is very bored being a test driver. He decides to help the cooks in the motorhome hoping that the weekend will pass quicker...
2003 German GP: Jarno has been affected by a long period of bad luck. He begins to think somebody put a curse on him and what better solution than garlic to keep the evil spirits away? If you don't believe in black magic, just look at the next photo...
Nurburgring 2004: pensive is the mood before qualifying...
Nurburgring 2004, Jarno's pit stop
Monza 2003, I wouldn't be able to be cool in that position but neither could he, judging from the color temperature of his face!
2004 Nurburgring, just after the pit-stop
Another friend who is no longer with us: Sooho Cho, Chairman of Hanjin Shipping, was one of the keenest supporters and long-standing sponsor of the team. A real gentleman, Sooho passed in November 2006 but left behind long years of happy memories. I remember him as a friend.
