ERIN MCKITTRICK

A LONG TREK HOME4,000 MILES BY BOOT, RAFT, AND SKI

The adventures of a young, idealistic couple who choose

to reduce their world down to just two small packs

and the next 100 yards in front of them.

1⁄4

In June 2007, Erin McKittrick and her husband, Hig, embarked on a 4,000-mile

expedition from Seattle to the Aleutian Islands, traveling solely by human power. This

is the story of their unprecedented trek along the northwestern edge of the Pacifi c

Ocean—a year-long journey through some of the most rugged terrain in the world—

and their encounters with rain, wind, blizzards, bears, and their own emotional and

spiritual demons.

Erin and Hig set out from Seattle with a desire to raise awareness of natural resource

and conservation issues along their route: clear-cut logging of rainforests; declining wild salmon populations;

extraction of mineral resources; and effects of global climate change. By taking each mile step by step, they

were able to intimately explore the coastal regions of Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska, see the wil-

derness in its larger context, and provide a unique on-the-ground perspective. An entertaining and, at times,

thrilling adventure, theirs is a journey of discovery and of insights about the tiny communities that dot this

wild coast, as well as the individuals there whom they meet and inspire.

ERIN MCKITTRICK had already logged more than 3,000 miles through Alaska’s untracked wildernesses,

before embarking on her 4,000-mile trek from Seattle to the Aleutian Islands. She received an MS in molecular

biology from the University of Washington, but left academia to pursue more wilderness experiences and to

concentrate on environmental activism. She lives with her husband and baby in Seldovia, Alaska.

• Compelling adventure with an environmental focus

• An informative natural and cultural history of one of our last wild coastlines

• Author is a pioneer in “packrafting,” an emerging trend in backcountry travel

ANDREW BISHARAT; FOREWORD BY CHRIS SHARMA

SPORT CL IMBINGFROM TOPROPE TO REDPOINT,

TECHNIQUES FOR CLIMBING SUCCESS

Our first comprehensive guide to the most

popular form of climbing today

Sport climbers often project a route that tests their physical limits in hopes of an

eventual completion, regardless of the number of attempts. Succeeding requires a

solid understanding of belaying and other climbing techniques that are used in various

climbing disciplines, but are detailed here specifi cally for sport climbing.

Targeting varying abilities, Sport Climbing teaches climbers how to rehearse moves

and train for routes, how to get through the pump, how to fi ght until the end of a pitch,

how to stay composed when tired, and how to best use their bodies to climb effi ciently

and expertly. Whether inspiring new climbers to learn the nuances of scaling vertical

terrain, or delving into a deeper, more conceptual understanding of how to go about

projecting a route, Andrew Bisharat brings confi dence and a level of practicality to the

sport. He demonstrates how skills specifi c to redpointing transfer

over to traditional climbing, making this a must-have book for

any climber. Featuring tips from famous climbers such as Tommy

Caldwell and Alex Honnold, the author brings a modern voice to a

fun and exciting sport.

ANDREW BISHARAT is a senior editor of Rock and Ice and

well known for his popular column, “Tuesday Night Bouldering.” A

climber for more than ten years, Bisharat has made alpine-style

ascents of technical peaks worldwide. He lives in Carbondale,

Colorado.

LANGDON COOK

FAT OF THE LANDADVENTURES OF A 21ST CENTURY FORAGER

Explore the Pacific Northwest via these adventures in foraging—

and discover a regional stew of food, natural history,

and oddball characters…

Foraging is not just a throwback to our hunter-gatherer past; it’s a way to reconnect with

the landscape. And Langdon Cook is not just your typical grocery cart-toting dad. For him,

gourmet delicacies abound, free for the taking if we just open our eyes. As a result, he

fi nds himself free-diving in icy Puget Sound in hopes of spearing a snaggletooth lingcod,

armed with nothing more than a “Hawaiian sling.” He tempts fate by eating mushrooms

that may or may not be poisonous. He strings up a fl y rod to chase after sea-run trout.

He even pulls on the gardening gloves to collect stinging nettles. In wry, detailed prose,

he traces his journey from wrangler of pre-packaged calories to connoisseur of coveted

wild edibles. Structured around the seasons of the year, each chapter focuses on a specifi c

food type and concludes with a recipe featuring the author’s hard-won bounty, a savory

stop to each adventure-fi lled morsel.

L ANGDON COOK was a senior book editor at Amazon.com until, in 2004, he left the

corporate world to live in a cabin off the grid with his wife and son. Now a freelance writer

and editor, Lang has written for the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Outside, Gray’s Sporting

Journal, Fly Fisherman, the Stranger, Seattle Metropolitan, and Conservation Magazine.

He was the recipient of the Joyce Waddell Writing Award at the University of Washington,

received the Margery Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency, and attended the Bread Loaf

Writers’ Conference on a grant. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

• Combines adventure with locavorism

The West Coast gardener’s guide to growing and

understanding edible heirloom plants

“An individual seed is so tiny—the pale, fl at carrot, or the rough, rotund beet—that I think

there’s no way this will feed me. But there it is, the beginning.”

Exploring the need for heirloom plants in the twenty-fi rst century, Edible Heirlooms takes

a look at the history and vitality of the heirloom plant, from Russian Red Kale to January

King Cabbage.

This informative guide collects twenty-six edible heirloom plants best suited to gardeners

in the maritime West—from British Columbia to the San Francisco Bay area—and provides

JAMES MARTIN

PLANET ICEA CLIMATE FOR CHANGE

What the ice tells us about the past may help us

understand the future of ice, and us, on Earth.

Planet Ice documents the beauty and the power of ice and its

unique role in revealing the changing condition of the planet.

Glaciers and ice fi elds are critical to the health of our world—

and we are making them disappear.

Pairing the striking glacier photography of James Martin with

essays by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, polar bear expert

Ian Stirling, ice scientist Richard Alley, glaciologist Gino Casassa,

and noted writers Gretel Ehrlich, Nick Jans, and Broughton

Coburn, Planet Ice examines the characteristics of polar, mountain, and tropical ice. It also explores human

concepts of ice and wilderness; the lives of penguins, polar bears, and other fauna that depend on ice; the

far-reaching effects of climate change; and our responsibilities as stewards of the natural world. Yet this

is not just a book of science. Together, these authors illuminate the profound connection between ice—a

substance that is at once mutable and forceful—and the wellbeing of our global community.

A trip leader for Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris, JAMES MARTIN has contributed to Outdoor Photographer

magazine and has seventeen books to his credit. For this project, he ventured to Antarctica, Greenland, Baffi n

Island, the Alaska Range, Mount Everest, Patagonia, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Alps, the Canadian Rockies,

Glacier National Park, Ecuador, Washington’s Cascade Range, Alaska’s North Slope, the Three Gorges

in China’s Yunnan Province, and more. He is represented by Getty Images. For more information, visit
