PART 1. DETAILS
Project title Gospel Oak to Barking Electrification Overbridge 14 Deck Lift
Project Number 668401
PRS Reference Number TBC
Location Crouch Hill Station
ELR TAH1 Mileage 3 miles 1342 yards
OS grid reference TQ 305 875 Structure Number 14
1.1 Proposed works
1.1.1 Brief General Description
The existing structure is located adjacent to Crouch Hill Station and comprises 3 spans supported
on brick abutments and two brick piers. The bridge deck spanning both the up and down
Tottenham and Hampstead lines consists of twenty one number prestressed precast concrete T
beams with concrete infill. The beams are supported on concrete cill beams and elastomeric strip
bearings. The two back spans are both masonry arches of similar span and construction. The
bridge carries the A1201 road across the railway at a skew angle of approximately 15°. The Skew
span between abutments of the masonry arch spans is approximately 6360m. The track span has
a clear skew span between abutments of approximately 7500m.
Solid brick parapets 355mm thick are present to both masonry arch spans. The track span has
430mm thick reinforced concrete parapets with brick outer faces.
As part of the Gospel Oak to Barking Electrification (GOBE) scheme, overbridge 14 has been
identified as having insufficient vertical clearance to accommodate the proposed OLE installation.
The existing headroom is approximately 4440m and the proposed minimum vertical clearance is
4740mm. The additional headroom will be provided by lifting the existing bridge deck 300mm
above its present position.

The piers and cill beams are to be retained to form part of the permanent works. The cill beams
are to remain in their current position. To accommodate the increase in height of the deck the
lifted deck is to be supported on steel hollow sections filled with grout. The void below the deck
and the cill beam will be infilled with insitu reinforced concrete to support the road and fill behind
the abutment. Stainless steel dowel bars will be drilled into the cill beam and cast into the infill
concrete. The steel hollow sections will be tied into the infill concrete via shear connectors to
prevent any movement after installation.
Temporary works will be necessary to support the deck from track level (if the deck is to be lifted
from track level). It may also be necessary to prop both piers during the deck lift to avoid any
instability of piers. All temporary works where necessary will be subject to separate formal F001,
F002 and F003 submissions.
To aid the deck lift masonry repairs to the masonry arch spans and concrete repairs to the track
span deck are to be carried out. Repairs will be in accordance with Network Rail standard
masonry repair drawings.
The two arch masonry spans are to be stripped down to the top of the existing backing and back
filled with light weight concrete to below road surfacing level.
Two additional steps are to be added to the stairs located on the north elevation giving access to
the down platform. The steps will be added to the top flight and will have similar dimensions as
the existing.
1.1.2 Details of any assumptions made in developing the proposals regarding any existing
structures, earthworks or permanent way
The local authority will be in agreement with the road lift to accommodate the increased
height of the deck.
Third party land owners/property owners will be in agreement with the road lift and any
necessary works to their property to accommodate the lift.
Utility company services through the bridge deck can accommodate the bridge deck lift and
the Utility companies are in agreement with the lift.
The S and T cable route attached to the north elevation of the bridge deck can
accommodate the lift. Survey of the cables and the support system to be carried out.
Lifting to be carried out from track level and the piers are to be propped

All necessary masonry repairs are to be carried out to the piers to enable the lifting works.
Stairs to platform assumed to be in good condition and able to be reused.
Parapets to be retained and increased in height only where necessary.
No inspection of both piers has been carried out of their inside faces or to the soffits of the
masonry arches. It is assumed that the inside faces are in good condition and require no
remedial works prior to lifting.
Existing waterproofing to remain with only renewal of the joints
Vehicle incursion containment levels are to remain as the existing provision across the bridge
and on the approach to both sides of the bridge.
1.1.3 Number and layout of tracks
Two tracks of the TAH1 line pass under Overbridge 14. The line speed is stated in Table 1 below.
At F001 stage it is proposed that the layout, level and position of the track are to remain as per
existing.
Line Current Line speedDown Tottenham and Hampstead 30
Up Tottenham and Hampstead 30 Table 1 - Schedule of Line Speeds
1.1.4 Foundation and substructure
The existing foundations and substructure comprise of brick abutments and brick piers. The track
span is supported off each pier via reinforced concrete cill beams. The existing cill beams and
piers are to remain and are to be repaired where necessary prior to the lifting works commencing.
It is not envisaged the increase of loads due to the lifting works will be greater than 10% of the
existing loads.

1.1.5 Superstructure
The bridge comprises of 3 number spans. Two spans are of masonry arch construction with the
arch barrel comprising of 4 rings of brickwork. Both spans are of similar geometry and both have
brickwork parapets. It is assumed that both arch barrels have flat concrete backing up to 100mm
below their arch crowns. The remaining span consists of 21 number precast prestressed T beams
with infill concrete between each beam. The beams are supported off cill beams via elastomeric
strip bearings. The cill beams are supported on brick piers. This span supports the road over the
two tracks of the Tottenham and Hampstead line. Reinforced concrete parapets with brick outer
faces are provided across this span.
All 3 number spans are to remain unchanged with only masonry or concrete repairs carried out.
All repair work will be carried out in accordance with Network Rail standard masonry repair
drawings.
The track span will be lifted by 300mm to accommodate the electrification of the tracks. The deck
once lifted will be supported off a 250 x 250 x 16 thick square hollow section filled with grout. The
hollow section will sit onto the existing cill beam and will have an elastomeric strip bearing fixed to
the top surface to support the bridge deck. The proposed bearing will be located on the centre
line of the existing bearings. Following installation of the hollow section the void below the deck
and the cill beam will be infilled with insitu reinforced concrete to support the road and fill behind
the abutment. Stainless steel dowel bars will be drilled into the cill beam and cast into the infill
concrete. The steel hollow sections will be tied into the infill concrete via shear connectors to
prevent any movement after installation.
1.1.6 Span / bearing / articulation arrangements for bridges
The superstructure is to be supported on elastomeric strip bearings. The bearings will be similar in
properties to the existing.
Each span dimension will remain unchanged.
1.1.7 Impact on the Surrounding Area
The lift of the road will affect adjacent properties and land. Access to and from adjacent
properties will also be affected.
Existing manholes, road gullies and chamber covers will be required to be lifted as will some
lighting columns.
The loop detectors and associated equipment will need to be replaced and the equipment lifted.

Road markings will need to be reinstated.
1.1.8 Drainage
Drainage of the road will remain as the existing via gullies located on the north side of the road
and either side of the bridge. There are no road gullies located on the bridge. The nearest road
gully to the bridge is located 20m away towards the west of the bridge adjacent the loop
detectors. A road gully is also located towards the east of the bridge approximately 30m away.
The drainage slot provided in each cill beam to the rear of the bearing will be infilled with
concrete as part of the permanent works.
There is also a drainage pipe to the rear of both cill beams approximately 1100mm below road
level. This will be removed to accommodate the proposed light weight concrete infill to be
installed above the backing of both masonry arch spans.
1.1.9 Headroom / lateral clearances
