The festival will only be providing 6, 88 key digital pianos for the piano group competitions. You can enter 3 to 12 players but they must be able to play together on 6 instruments. Please NOTE: Sounds may be used but no rhythm.

Time limits for vocal duets will be lowered to 31/2 minutes

Please NOTE: There will be 10 marks deducted from vocal solos if there is are any vocals on the track.

Please NOTE: Guitar artist solos must be graded according to the difficulty of the selection being performed and not by the students grade level of reading.

Adult Performance Category: Use A for solo code then the instrument (P for piano, G for guitar, VE for singing and playing) then any age over 20

We no longer will be coding the artist classes using D for Digital and A for acoustic, All piano solos will be on a digital up to and including grade 3 maybe 4 (depends on entries) All solos grade (4 depending on entries) 5 and up will be performed on an acoustic piano. We are changing the code for the Rock Bands to RB instead of C.

Use S for Violin Instrument Code

Please average the grade for the piano groups and state the grade instead of A, B,C and let the festival sort out the categories.

All contestants in the vocal artist categories must have their own accompaniment in the form of a CD (not DVD)with their selection as track one, or MP3 player (must have headphone jack) with their selection in a Funfest 2016 playlist, or a live accompanist. Make sure the contestants know how to access the tracks (no passwords)

There will be some non competitive categories where for the very young , all the students will receive and award, or for mixed categories (various instruments) a mark of 90% of higher for a gold medal,

A mark of 80-89% for a silver and 70-79% for a bronze. In these categories the students will be marked on the performance of their selection and not in comparison to the other contestants.

RCM Equivalents to the Levels in the Funfest Syllabus: RCM 1 & 2 = level 3 piano, RCM 3 = level 4, RCM 4 & 5 = level 5 piano, RCM level 6 = level 6

Keyboard Grades equivalents to Piano categories: pb= Music street 1, p1 = Music street 2, p2= Music street 3 and intro, p3 = k1, p4 = k2, p5 = k3, p6 = k4, p7 = k5

ELIGIBILITY

1. All competitions unless otherwise stated, shall be open to amateurs only. An amateur is defined as one who has not received remuneration in excess of $2500.00 in the year prior to the Funfest deadline from the teaching or performance of music.

2. All competitors must be registered members of Funfest 2018. Open classes allow amateur or semi-professional players. Teachers may compete in open classes only.

3. Any student who enters a category on their own instrument may enter a second category on another instrument providing that they do not enter more than 3 grades below the category of their main instrument. E.g. Johnny enters grade 6 piano, he would also be allowed to enter grade 3 guitar but not grade 2. Also any student may enter one grade higher on any instrument.

4. ACCOMPANIMENT on rhythm by a teacher is allowed only in guitar solo and duet classes. Vocal students in regular artist classes must use an accompanist or a recorded accompaniment. If the student wants to play the accompaniment part him or herself they must enter the Entertainer class. In vocal test piece classes the provided CD must be used.

5. AMPLIFICATION - Contestants and teachers must use festival equipment.

6. GROUP AND DUET ARRANGEMENTS – All groups may only play one song or medley. All groups are defined as 3 or more members. Piano groups and duets, vocal choirs and duets, guitar groups and duets must hand music into the adjudicator. If no music is handed to the adjudicator 10 marks will be deducted from the final mark. Percussion ensembles and rock bands are not required to submit music. All piano, vocal and guitar groups and duets must use a minimum of 2 harmonized parts, no rhythm is allowed but piano groups but digital piano sounds can be used.

7. INSTRUMENTATION –Rock Combo groups may contain any instrumentation Piano groups must consist of all keyboards. In the Piano group categories 6 digital pianos all with sustain pedals will be provided for the competition. Vocal groups must use all singers.

8. ORIGINAL SCORES – Original scores must be given to the contest organizer before the class begins. 20 marks will be deducted in all group categories in which music is required but not submitted to the judge. The contest organizer will return the score upon completion of the class. Combo classes, percussion ensembles. In regular test piece solo classes, the festival will provide the adjudicator with music. Students must provide the adjudicator with the original music of their piano artist solos prior to playing.

9. MEMORIZATION – Memorization of music is required in all solo classes. 10 marks will be deducted for the use of music. Duets and groups MAY use music. Rock bands may NOT use music or have lyric aids.

10. TIME LIMITS- Time limits will be strictly enforced. The contestant must report to the contest rooms at least 15 minutes before the class begins. In the test piece classes, repeat signs must be omitted unless otherwise specified, but all D.C.’s and D.S.’s must be observed. Contestants not complying will lose 20 marks

11. ARTIST TIME LIMITS: Junior Artist (grades1, 2) 2 minutes

12. SELECTIONS- Contestants must play the prescribed test piece for their class. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. Exceptions to this are primary classes on all instruments. In the regular solo class, each contestant is allowed to play in his own class and or one class above. No contestant is

allowed to play in more than 2 regular solo classes on the same instrument and NOT MORE THAN ONE ARTIST SOLO.

13. TUNING of guitars in NOT allowed in contest rooms. Music must be cued for the vocal students.

14. Drum Sequencing is the only sequencing allowed in Combo Classes

CLASSIFICATIONS

1. SOLO CLASSESPRIMARY A- Non-Competitive. Open to young students (4-6 year olds) studying in any introductory course for young beginners. ( My 1st Piano A or B or Glover ABC)

PRIMARY B – Open to students studying for under 8 months, but not yet in grade one

REGULAR CLASSES – Based on the examination syllabus of the Ontario Music Teachers Guild. The contestant is classified according to the grade that he is presently studying. CLASS = GRADE as of May 16th, 2016. All regular solos MUST use the equipment provided by the festival with the exception of guitars, but including amps.

Age Restrictions have been added to vocal solos. Junior – Pre, Gr.1 and Gr.2 is open to students 12 & under, Intermediate – Gr.3, Gr.4 is open to students 16 & under and Senior - Gr. 5 and above is open to all ages.

OPEN IS ANY LENGTH OF STUDY. Teachers may compete.GUITAR Class 1 to 5 and senior. No effects may be used.PIANO Preliminary to 10 (Grades Preliminary to 4 will be on a digital piano with only piano

soundVOCAL Primary to Class 8 and open. The provided CD MUST be used for accompaniment of

regular solos.DRUMS Novice (10 & under no more than 6 months of studying)

Junior (11 & under no more than 1 year of studying)Intermediate (14 & under no more than 2 years of studying)Senior (15 & older any length of study)

ARTIST SOLO CLASSES – These categories will be sub-divided into classes by age and grade. Artist competitions are offered on:

PIANO, KEYBOARD, DIGITAL PIANO, GUITAR, BASS, VOCAL, DRUMS, ENTERTAINER CLASS. Artist solos are own choice of song and music MUST be handed in to the adjudicator in the piano artist classes but not in any other artist classes. 20 marks will be deducted if music is not submitted (no photocopies please). The category will be judged with the music being used as a guideline.

The piano artist classes will be performing on a digital piano up to and including grade 4. From grade 5 to open class you must specify digital piano or acoustic piano. Whenever a digital piano is being use in this competition any digital sounds may be used. The keyboard artist classes may use any instrument with any feature including sequencers. Students in the keyboard category must be prepared to set up their keyboards with no assistance from anyone.Guitar artist classes can use effect pedals.Drum artist and vocal artists will be divided by same categories as regular solos.Refer back to time limits. Drummers must use the provided drum set.Vocal artist classes can have a live accompanists, recorded accompaniment but the performer may not accompaniment themselves. In the Entertainer Class vocalists must accompany themselves.

4. DUET CLASSES- All duets will be divided by grade. If there are not enough entries we will combine appropriate grades together. These classes are own choice and do not have to be memorized. Please make sure that the adjudicator is given a copy of the original music. Piano duet categories are for one piano four hands, and only one piano will be provided.

5. VOCAL ENTERTAINER CLASS-Age Restrictions have been added to the vocal entertainer class. Novice – is open to students 9 and under and a maximum of Gr. 2 on their chosen instrument. Junior - is open to students 11 and under and a maximum of Gr. 4 on their chosen instrument. Intermediate - is open to students 14 and under and a maximum of Gr. 6 on their chosen instrument. Senior - is open to students 16 and under and a maximum of Gr. 8 on their chosen instrument. Open – is open to all levels and ages. Please Note: No sequencing, no rhythm will be allowed. All the music heard needs to be played by the performer.

A) ROCK BANDS

1. EQUIPMENTThe following equipment will be supplied: P.A. system and mikes

All bands must use the equipment provided. Extra equipment, which may be needed on stage by a band, must be authorized by the contest organizer and must be set up in accordance with the allotted time limit for the competition. Any sort of technical failure on festival equipment, which is not the fault of the band, will be taken into consideration. Bands will not be penalized for technical problems. All bands must comply with the festival rules or disqualification will result.

B) PROGRAM PROCEDURES

1. THE COMMITTEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DIVIDE ANY CLASS THAT MAY BECOME TOO LARGE AND TO ELIMINATE ANY SOLO OR DUET CLASSES WHERE THERE ARE LESS THAN 3 ENTRIES. In this case, the contestant will have the option of a refund, or entering in the next higher class.

2. Each teacher will be notified at least one week prior to the festival as to the time and place of the competition.

3. The decision of the adjudicator is absolutely final. At no time, will the adjudicator be approached during the contest.

4. The adjudicator’s report will be handed out at the end of each class. Diplomas will be presented to the winning group for the studio. Times for the presentations will be announced at the festival.

5. The festival reserves the right to disqualify anyone who is not ready to play at the beginning of his or her class.

AWARDS

1. SOLOS AND DUETS- Ribbons will be awarded to the contestants placing in the following ranges.80-100% 1st place ribbon

70-79 % 2nd place ribbon60-69% 3rd place ribbon

Gold medallions will be awarded to the contestant with the highest mark in each class. Silver and Bronze medallions will be awarded to each 2nd and 3rd highest marks. Open solo and duet classes will be awarded trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

2. GROUPS-. Each member of the top 3 groups will receive a medal according to their standing. Times of the presentations will be announced at the festival. Note that in some situations, the adjudicators may elect not to present an adjudicator’s award or a placing trophy.

3. DUETS

Instrument code comes first, then the grade, then number your duets by which number duet this is entered from you area. The duets need to be tied together with this assigned number. Example: Any number can be used after the instrument then grade. For a grade 4 piano duet your codes would be P4and then whatever number you chose P4100. These codes need to appear on the name line of each contestant and on another line with the two contestant’s first names as they will appear in the final program. For mixed duets please use M in duet code and then the instruments: vp or gp or vg then the average grade of the 2 contestants.

GROUPS

So first the instrument P for piano V for vocal, RB for rock bandThen the category which is the average grade of the group.
