THE COMMERCIAL LEADER
LOOKING THEM OVERI With The Observer
Whenever something w orthw hile hits L yndhurst, and whenthis something pertains to sports, your Observer is all eat* and eyes and brings the highlights of the said something to nisreader? (if any) via this column.
And the golf driving contest sponsored by Chuck O'Connor is a worthwhile something. We have heard many people agree on that. We have a critic with us today, who w ill sully this column a little later on, who dislikes so many columns pertaining to the same subject, namely the driving contest. Bu t like it or not, this space is reserved for news oc the driving contest which is to be held at Eddy Toleno's driving range at the west base of Valley Brook Ave. on the afternoon of Ju ly 10th.
Many, many people can be seen at the driving range daily or under the lights there, nightly, just a-practicii^ and a-prac ticing, for what we sneakingiy know, is to benefit them when the driving contest is held. All types of people can be seen at the range. Many of them are in their forties and have strokes which look for all the world like an axe descending on a chunk of wood. But the motive is there and I imagine if we hung around long enough, we could discern some improvement in their game because of the constant practice.
Many of the golf ball killers at the range are mere youth», and the vigor they display in swinging at the ball (one of them couldn't check his excessive momentum after swinging and toppled over) is indicative of the strength and fresh energy which belongs to youth.
everyone will have to admit that if the sole good accomplished by the driving contest is to get po>ple to indulge in such a Bernarr McFadden type of exercises, then the whole proposition will be a success on that count alpne.
We have seen some fellows who really swat the pill. Some of them have perfect form, and using that form along with a T.ir:.in-like build, they make a picture which is something to *e.
Eddy Toleno, proprietor of the range, reports that the contest is gaming favor and new entries are coming in daily. Goiters who haven't an entry blank handy, (that's hard to imagine) you can go down to the range and register in the big, black entry book Eddy has behind the counter.

Now for that letter.Dear Observer: June 2J, 19X7
The fourth estate boasts of many member», but if there were a filth—.-you would be a lesser member of the *|xth. Would you mind explaining to me why the editor prtnts the stoff you laughingly'refer to —(aty7 . . !•$ . , ! this typewriter)—as your column. it grieves me no end to note that you are "Chummy" with that "fcypo" critic. Norm Greenwald. Only Winchell and Bemie are permitted those liberties.
"Variety is the »pice of lfie." I might add, originality is not the bape of your existence.
Did it ever occur to you that your readers (1 )— (myself) might care-;for a change? Oh, I don’t expect you to all of a sudden, l i |s a spring, blase forth with a column which will literally flash through this town as the flash which occurs when one thrust», a glowinft splint into a bottle of < '(¿[gen.
By this time you are probably sitting up flr yriuf era ke, barrel after having put your whittling aside—scratching yotlr head. If you have done all of this, it is now time for you to slump over and rest your head on a case of beans—soon the gentle sounds of snores will begin to mingle with your mus- ings (laiy).
I'm inclined to agree with Norm about your column improving—please do not all<wv it to infest your modesty—or else.
Necessity prevents me from attending the contest.Norm won't win—he can't borrow a driver.
Your lamenting reader,. , f A n n s .

Team By 4-1
W hat’s happened to all the softball teams in town? We haven't seen a game in to long, we’re beginning to wonder if they all haven't disbanded. Most jh( them seem to have gone in lor the Shuflleboard game which is becoming so popular at the local taverns.
Haw* Rowe «tfll h i h k league in progress, but lacks the interest tohand out some lively publicity.
For Noim Greenwald’s great Amu:««, we know what happened to them, all right, ail right. It seems theyc were ottered a challenge from tome team In the local leagtie That hit them where it hurt and since that time we haven't heard so, much as a peep out of them.
Going hand in hand, or rather, in the same paragraph with the Amoco'» are the Kingsland Standards headed by that daring young man on the motor scooter. Tommy Connolly. They have, it seems, practically disbanded since their «tar pitcher, I. Q.
„Jjchem eric, was laid up with a burnt out pitching arm. II you remember, up to that point, they were, according to them, and wc took their word for it, really headed for town.
I Q. Schemeric is back. He's back to find a scene of vivid destlatiiti The only thing left of the Kingsland Standards is a battered old ball and a bat which is slightly mildewed Connolly, the king pin of the team, has taken to a motorcycle. And the rest of the team has receded into deep recesses and can he seen at times deliberately entering drug stores. "Ala*!" murmured I. Q Schemeric. “Nuttin’s any good around here exceptjn me ”
