Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention for February
God of Mercy and Love We place our African American and African Families before You today. May we be proud of our history and never forget
those who paid a great price for our liberation. Bless us one by one and keep our hearts and minds fixed on higher ground.
Help us to live for you and not for ourselves, and may we cher-ish and proclaim the gift of life. … This we ask in the Precious Name of Jesus, our Savior and Blessed Assurance. Amen.
Holy Mary, Mother of Our Families, pray for us.
Excerpt from Prayer composed by FR. JIM GOODE, OFM,
who in 1989 founded this National Day of Prayer for the African
American and African Family.
Day of Prayer for the African American Family February 5, 2017
My dear Parishioners,
Last November we Catholics celebrated Black Catholic His-
tory Month. This month we join with people across the coun-
try in celebrating Black History Month and we begin by ob-
serving this Sunday as a day of Prayer for African American
and African Families, a tradition that reaches back 29 years.
It is significant that we begin this special month with a pray-
er for our African American and African Families; no matter
what their situation, they need the support of our prayers
because we live in—it’s no exaggeration to say —perilous
times, especially for minority peoples.
The special theme for this year’s National Day of Prayer is
“Stand for What You Believe In.” While African American
and African Families are urged to discuss among themselves
what they are willing to stand for, it would benefit all Chris-
tian families to do just that.
I hope we will be especially mindful of African American
and African Families of the Moslem faith. While the majori-
ty of American Moslems, over 5 million, have their family
roots in the Middle East, one quarter are African American
or African. Because of the current atmosphere of animosity
and even hatred toward the followers of Islam that emanates
from the highest governmental realms of our land, we all
must be prepared to support and defend our sisters and broth-
ers of that faith whatever their national origin. They, like
Christians and Jews, share a common belief in the one God
and Father of us all. They believe as we do that they are
children of that same God and as such enjoy a God-given
dignity and the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happi-
ness.”
Today, as never before, we all must be willing to “Stand for
What You Believe In.”
—Fr. Jerome, C.P.

St. Paul of the Cross Goal: $39,600.00
The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is a unified appeal conducted each year in parishes and missions throughout the Archdio-cese of Atlanta. Although the Appeal seeks to raise dollars, it is not only about money. It also provides a time to reflect on
the investment of one’s time and God-given talents.
The money that individuals give provides programs, minis-tries and services that aid the Church throughout north and central Georgia. As Catholics, we are sent forth to carry the light of Christ into the world and to transform it. Your gifts to your parish and to the Archdiocese help to carry out this work.
Prayer for the Sick Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden.
Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to
acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.
World Day of The Sick Saturday, February 11, 2017
