A shot against cancer?

One day the scariest thing about cancer may be the needle that makes you immune to it. The theory: build up the

body's defense to fight off a disease naturally. Dramatic research m

this direction is going on right now. Scientists are working

on mechanisms to make the body reject cancer. And the promise for the

future is staggering. Wouldn't you feel good

knowing you contributed to the research? Feel good. Please contribute. Your

dollars will help further all our cancer research. We want to wipe out

cancer in your lifetime.

In Memoriam J.C. POWELL

Born Warsaw, N.C., Jan. 22, 1890 Died Warsaw, N.C., Mar. 26, 1974 J. C. Powell, emeritus missionary to

Nigeria, died Mar. 26 at his home in Warsaw, N.C. He was 84.

Before retiring in 1956, Powell and his wife served as missionaries to Ni geria for 37 years. He was a field mis

sionary in Shaki and Oyo. Because their contribution to Ni gerian life was con sidered outstanding, the Powells were in vited to visit Nigeria as guests of the coun try's Western Region

at celebrations marking the attainment of independence, Oct. I, 1960.

Powell was a graduate of Wake Forest (N.C.) College (now in Winston Salem, N.C.) and Southern Baptist The ological Seminary, Louisville, Ky. He served as pastor of churches in North Carolina and did mission work in Whit ley Co., Ky., before appointment to overseas service in 1919.

Survivors include his wife, the for mer Rosa Hocutt; a daughter, Miss Marv Hester Powell, who served as a Southern Baptist missionary to Nigeria 1949-68; two sisters; and a brother.

20. DESCRIPT!V~ CHARAC'!'E~IZATION (Please read special instruction sheet and sample descriptive characterizations carefully before proceeding.)

The evaluation of the thirty-six years of missionary service of Mrs. Rosa Powell in Nigeria could not be expressed in a limited space. She served well in many capacities: wife~ a mother, homemaker, teacher and a leader among women and chilrl.ren in associational trork along wi. th her husband. The sun r.ras never too hot nor the miles too long for her to reach the s:nallest village or church to give encouragement and help needed and to witness for her Lord.

Few missionaries have been able to identify themselves with the African people as Mrs. Powell did. Her command and use of the Yoruba language and knowledge of the customs and mirxi of the people gave her an opening into the heart of the African that few have been able to attain. As an African boy expressed it after the Powells retired: "When is Mrs. Powell coming back to Nigeria?" When told that she had retired and would not be returning, he said: "But she will have to come back. She is an Africant"

Her years as a teacher in Elam Memorial School, Shaki and Oyo Boys' High School were a constant help and an inspiration to many African young women and men students and to staff members. Her patience and sympathetic understanding of their needs and problems brought many to seek her counsel and help.

Mrs. Powell's home was always open to both African and missionary and her hospitality could not be surpassed. She was an ideal hostess. Mrs. Powell was "Mother" to many young missionaries, especially during the years in which she and her husband served as head of the Language and Orientation School, Oyo.

Her unselfishness, courage and faith were exemplified du::-ing the World War II when she set sail on the Zam Zam and her husband took another ship when there was no passage available for them to go together.

To me the most outst.aming characteristic of Mrs. Powell is her prayer life. T~ere is nothing too small or too large for her to talk to her Lord about anc'\!ith utmost faith that He will hear, nor was she ever too busy to pray. As a young missionary, this was impressed upon me one day when the Powells, Miss Ela~ and I were in Oyo association visiting churches. The car doors were locked and the key inside. The keys to the Oyo mission house where we were staying were lost. Mrs. Powell turned to Miss Elam and me and said: 11Let us pray about that car and those house keys." While we were praying, Mr. Powell blew the car horn and an African boy c~~e into the room rattline the house keys. It was not unusual for Mrs. Powell to come saying: 11Let us pray about this" when some need arose or some problem presented itself. All who were privileged to know Mrs. Powell feel her contribution to NiP,eria and the cause of Christ was worthy of praise.

Page 15: f?...ROSA HOCUTT POWELL DIES Rosa Hocutt Powell, 90, emeritus missionary to Nigeria, died in Warsaw on June 13. She served with her husband, the late J. C. Powell, for 37 years before

Rosa Hocutt Powell Humility is the single word that most accurately describes the

life, character, and personality of Mrs. Rosa Hocutt Powell. Born in Ashton, North Carolina (Pender County), the daughter

of a Baptist minister, and one of fifteen children, she received her A.B. degree from Meredith College and furthered her studies at the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina College for Women. It is significant that almost all of the fifteen children in her family were graduates of Baptist colleges.

After teaching school for several years, Rosa Hocutt became the bride of the Reverend J.C. Powell. In the year 1919 the Powells received their appointment to the mission field and embarked for the African continent to begin what would become a thirty-seven year missionary ministry to the children of God in Nigeria. Her missionary service specialized in the field of education. In the cities of Oyo and Shaki, she taught in day schools and girls' schools, served as the principal of a Baptist Boys' High School, and then taught in a language and orientation school. During her thirty-seven years of service she touched the lives of many children as well as adults, and her quiet, confident faith revealed the spirit of Christ ever present in her life.

A eulogy spoken at her funeral service declared that "words of praise or commendation would be genuinely embarrassing to Mrs. Rosa, because she lived a life of humility that had no room for pride or boasting." The Christian life of this very dear and gracious lady reflects, in a mirror-like portrayal, the true meaning and intent of Matthew 18:4: "Whosoever shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

.. The marriage of the Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Powell was blessed with

one daughter, Mary Hester Powell. Following in the footsteps of her parents, she completed her education and training as a registered nurse and returned to Nigeria to serve alongside her parents as a missionary nurse.

In a memorial to Rosa Hocutt Powell, her pastor said: "She was loved and respected by the people of Nigeria as well as the people of Warsaw." The providence of God continued to work even through adverse circumstances, as she remained a great witness to Christ merely by being present in church each Sunday, even though in a wheelchair. All those who were privileged to know this quietly dynamic

Christian spirit will rejoice that she has claimed the promise in B.B. McKinney's words: "What joy 'twill be at set of sun, in mansions beyond the blue, to find some souls that you have won; let others see Jesus in you." "To God be the glory" was not an idle phrase for Mrs. Powell.

She gave all glory to God, without reservation, and our heavenly Father has reserved for her a mansion.
