FOUND-OBJECTS

Objects which has not been designed for an artistic purpose, but which exists for another purpose already. Found objects may exist either as utilitarian, manufactured items, or things which occur in nature.

The objects are discovered by the artist or

musician to be capable of being employed in an artistic way, and are designated as "found" to distinguish them from purposely created items used in the art forms

ASSEMBLAGE

An artistic process consisting of making three-dimensional or two-dimensional artistic compositions by putting together found objects.

JOSEPH CORNELL Created assemblage “boxes”. Was a “symbolist” used found-objects to

hint at abstract ideas. Turned everyday objects into mysterious

treasures.

MICHAEL DEMENG Creates shrines, demented toys and

haberdashery (men’s adorned clothing).

Shrines are inspired by mental illnesses, childhood memories and the objects themselves.

Every object is painted, sand-papered or made to look rusty and vintage.

ABIGAIL RIESER Her sculptures are constructed from

materials and found objects from the city landfill, flea markets, thrift shops, and antique shops

The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are of utmost importance in her work.

LOUISE NEVELSON Known for monumental, monochromatic

wooden sculptures and wall pieces. Created out of wood, her sculptures appear

puzzle-like, with multiple intricately cut pieces placed into wall sculptures or independently standing pieces.

ZAC FREEMAN You know all that stuff you either toss away

of throw in the kitchen 'junk' drawer? Buttons, old remote controls, pen caps, paper clips, Altoid tins, Legos, wire, plastic bits and pieces from lord-knows-what? Well those are precisely what artist Zac Freeman uses in creating these one of a kind portraits.

These sculptures are inspired by his Japanese heritage.

“As I create space and composition in the box, I think about where the found objects fit and how they interact with each other. I am always interested in making interactive pieces for the viewer's participation. Within the relatively small size of my works, I am striving to create a world of shadows, light, silence, spirituality, and my personal memories”

SAYAKA KAJITA GANZ

Driven by a combination of my passion for fitting odd shapes together and a sympathy toward discarded objects, I create animals from thrift store plastics.

I only select objects that have been used and discarded. My goal is for each object to transcend its origin by being integrated into an animal/ organic forms that are alive and in motion. This process of reclamation and regeneration is liberating to me as an artist.

Building these sculptures helps me understand the situations that surround me. It reminds me that even if there is a conflict right now, there is also a solution in which all the pieces can coexist peacefully. Though there are wide gaps in some areas and small holes in others, when seen from the distance there is great beauty and harmony in our community. Through my sculptures I transmit a message of hope.
