Lent 2013

Isn’t it hard to believe that it’s time for the season of Lent to begin? By February 13, Ash Wednesday, we’ll be prepared with our Ash Wednesday worship services, the Lenten Devotional, Lenten Wednesdays (see elsewhere in the Sentinel), AND our 2013 Haiti Work Team will be all set for another adventure into service. Oh, and the Super Bowl will happen, NHL hockey will have resumed, the Lakers will no doubt still be floundering, we’ll be arguing about who should get an Oscar for what, and, happily, we’ll be that much closer to the opening of Spring Training.

So in the midst of all that, how do we re-set the clocks of our hearts and souls before Daylight Savings time has resumed and the Spring Equinox is still weeks away? I recommend daily reading of our Lenten Devotional, commitment to regular participation in worship, and venturing into the stillness of the heart on our Lenten Wednesday evenings. Our Lenten theme this year is “Habits of Love,” drawn from the book written by Rev. Ed Bacon, Rector for All Saints Pasadena. Some of you may want to read it. “Habits of Love” invites us onto a “tremendous, transformative journey” and helps us ask: “How do I find the most meaningful life I possibly can? What does that life look like for me? What does this mean for my relationships at home and at work? How do I move forward in my life?”

May the 40-day journey of Lent bless us with wisdom, growth, healing, insight, and love.

CondolencesWe extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of these departed loved ones:

- Virginia Davis’ son Harold Hoagland, Jr., who died December 20 in New Castle, Delaware.- Shalimar Reodica’s grandfather Jesus Javier, who died December 25. A service was held on January 12.- Marjorie Wagnon, who died January 1. A remembrance was held on January 25.- John Adriatico’s father Fredolin Arias Adriatico, who died January 8. A service was held on January 19 in Gates Chapel.

BirthsAsh Theodore Petersen, born December 6, 2012, to Alison & Scott Petersen and big brother Gage; Elli Throckmorton, grandmother.

Rev. Farris February Book StudySpeaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power--and How They Can Be Restored by Marcus Borg

Best-selling author, Scripture scholar, and theologian Marcus Borg provokes thoughtful response, serious discussion, and faithful reflection in his latest book. As part of your Lenten journey, let Borg's reflections on God, sin, salvation, forgiveness, repentance and other Christian "basics" invite you into deeper reflection and meaning. Have you always wondered what these terms mean? Have you wondered what they mean in your faith journey? Come and explore with your fellow journeyers....

Come one and all on Sunday February 24 at 11:30 am in the Fireside Room. Don’t forget to bring a potluck dish to share! The book is available online (Kindle and Nook versions available) or at the Sunday Hospitality Table or in the church office.

Upward Bound House: Home Run for Kids "I was praying with my feet," said Abraham Joshua Heschel as he walked arm-in-arm with Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of other civil rights activists down Pennsylvania Avenue the morning of August 28, 1963. And present for the day's historic speeches and marches were not a few Methodists.

Indeed, Methodists have a marked history of praying in motion, from embarking on missionary treks across the Atlantic, to foraying with the gospel on horseback beyond the westernmost reaches of a new American Democracy.

Well, March 3rd, the month's first Sunday, FUMC will be partnering with many churches, schools, and organizations from all across West Los Angeles to walk, run and ride along in support of the Upward Bound House's Home Run for Kids 10K, 5K, and Kiddie K.

Come join our team by signing up for any event you wish, and join our team, FUMC Santa Monica, via the link below. It will be a worship experience in proper Methodist locomotion, complete with a pre-event service of holy communion. Find out for yourself what it means to pray with your feet. The last day to register is February 27.

Shareringers “Gift Exchange” In a switch from their usual gift exchange at their Christmas Party, the Shareringers decided to 'gift' Family Place with books this year. Phil and Claudia Flanders proudly delivered 88 books for the children! The books were received by Maria with gratitude and a big Thank You to all.

Lenten Wednesday Nights - Love: The Habit of Stillness This Lenten Season, beginning on February 20, we will be offering Wednesday nights as a time of contemplation and peace. There will be 3 different opportunities each Wednesday evening.

7-9 pm Labyrinth Walk, Simkins Hall in the Shelby Center7-7:45 pm Contemplative Prayer, Gates Chapel

8-9 pm Spiritual Yoga, Fireside Room

All are open to everyone. We hope that you can join us in 1, 2 or all 3 of the events each Wednesday.

Here is a bit from the yoga instructor:

“Hi my name is Temitope Sonuyi. I came to this church through Pause and am a participant in Men’s Breakfast Bible study and Cross(+)Brew. I offer my services as an instructor of yogic techniques for improved wellness. The class is open to beginners and those already familiar with forms of yoga. We will meet Wednesday nights from 8-9pm. The class is free but a free will offering will be collected.

“I see yoga as a practice of realizing the presence of God in every moment; essentially bliss. These classes will focus on the mindful linkage of breath and movement whilst maintaining an awareness of the divine love of God surrounding us. Be prepared to sweat a bit, and wear close-fitting clothes. If you have a yoga mat, bring it.”

Haiti Work TeamOn Ash Wednesday night our team departs for Haiti. We have been wrapped in prayer throughout this entire process leading to our trip and ask that you continue to hold our trip in your prayers. We also ask that in particular you pray for the people of Haiti, the people whose names we do not know yet but we will learn. We give thanks to God for the gift of this community which commissions us to go forth in this good work on your behalf. We go forth to serve, to do our best to embody the spirit of Jesus Christ. Our team–Martha Ross, Michael Kelley, Jan Hanley, Kendra Gorlitsky, and Robert English–will be commissioned on Sunday, February 10.

Lent is a time of confession and preparation for the gift of resurrection. It’s a somber time – this period of time for introspection, self-examination, and repentance.

LOOKING aHeaD Easter Sunday Services, March 31 Traditional Easter Worship Service, 10 am, FUMC Sanctuary

Welcome Ambassadors Our Sunday morning ministry of hospitality is a wonderful part of reaching out to members and new folks alike. Won't you volunteer once a month to be out at the table in front of the narthex to greet people? A friendly smile and warm handshake are the only requirements--along with a desire to welcome everyone into the loving fellowship of FUMC. For more information, contact Nancy in the church office or at the Hospitality Table during Sunday Coffee Fellowship.

C.A.S.T. We are excited to have auditions in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center on Monday February 11. Everyone who auditions will be cast! There is a $125 activity fee. Rehearsals for 1st-4th graders will be Mondays from 4 - 6 pm and 5th-12th grader rehearsals will be Mondays from 6:30-8:30 pm. Plays and performances are to be announced.

Children’s After School Theater (C.A.S.T.) is a program for children ages 1st through 12th grade, both for children of our congregation and in the community. This program fosters positive, Christian-centered actions while building self-esteem through the arts - particularly theater - and teaching trust and teamwork. Email Dane Rold at [email protected] or call the church office for more information.

FUMC Preschool Silent AuctionOur Preschool's annual silent auction will begin on March 1 and conclude on March 14. There will be items from a variety of restaurants, entertainment venues, hair salons and other unique items for bid. Any bid large or small is generous and will enrich the lives of the students. To browse the auction items, please visit: www.BiddingForGood.com (during auction dates). If you have any questions, please contact Preschool parent Jura Venckus at [email protected].

Basic Christian BeliefsEver wonder what was really going on at the council of Nicea? Do you love scripture and yearn to understand it better? Ever had questions about apparent contradictions in scripture? Not sure what you think about Hell, or Heaven for that matter? Ever wondered why there seems to be so much division between Christian groups? Would you appreciate a few guideposts to help you mark your journey into knowing God more?

You are not alone. Though the church's Basic Christian Beliefs class taught this year by Kurt Poland is now underway, you are more than welcome to join us part-way through. Don't hesitate. Come to all the rest of the classes, come to just one. Sit in the front row or quip from the peanut gallery. Just show up. It's what God did, and that has made all the difference. We meet on Sundays through February 27 in Room 101 from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Email Kurt Poland if you have any questions: [email protected].

Ash Wednesday ServicesFor your convenience, identical services will be held on February 13 in Gates Chapel at 12:30 and 7:30 pm, marking the beginning of the 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting prior to Easter. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. It is a somber day of reflection on what needs to change in our lives if we are to be fully Christian.
