West Australian Ballet has enlivened our city and

State with ballet performances and outreach

programmes, which have enriched our communities

for 64 years. The Company continues to grow in

size and stature, delivering artistic excellence year

ONYEARANDTHEEXCITINGPROGRAMMEWEODžERIN2016 is no exception.

WAB has again brought together exceptional

artists from Australia and around the world, to

work with our dancers and creative teams to

deliver extraordinary artistic experiences to you,

our loyal and enthusiastic supporters.

From dynamic modern repertoire at the Quarry

and our ‘home-grown’ Genesis season, to beloved

titles like Beauty & the Beast, to Romeo and Radio

revisited and culminating in the largest production

WAB has ever mounted, in a glittering new Christmas

production of The Nutcracker. There is, quite literally,

something for everyone in Season 2016.

We exist for our audiences and our communities,

but likewise, we can’t exist without the support of

our committed partners: Principal Partner, Woodside,

and all our corporate partners and sponsors; the

State and Federal Governments and their agencies;

and our generous private donors; all of whom give

liberally and willingly to help nourish and sustain

West Australian Ballet.

I invite you all to participate in the artistic adventure

ahead in 2016.

As Patron of West Australian Ballet it is my great

privilege to invite you to experience Season 2016.

Aurélien has given us a programme that will keep

us on the edge of our seats, let us re-live childhood

dreams and fall in love with ballet all over again.

WAB is renowned for its engaging and adventurous

programmes. Somehow they always manage to

create a suite of works that move forward from the

previous year and bring something fresh and

magical to inspire and delight us all.

An amazing new classical production of the

perennial Christmas favourite, The Nutcracker, is

sure to capture the imagination of thousands of

children (and parents!) when it premieres at His

Majesty’s Theatre in November/December 2016.

Likewise, another family favourite, Beauty & the Beast, will make its Australian premiere in May.

Exciting new modern works will be featured at the

Quarry Amphitheatre and in the Genesis season,

and we will be delighted to again experience the

beauty of Romeo and Juliet back to back with the

‘pop’ sensation, Radio & Juliet.

I wish Aurélien and all of the Company well in

presenting this exciting programme, which I believe

all Western Australians will enjoy. I hope that you will

show your support for this wonderful programme

and subscribe to Season 2016.

Woodside has been proud to support West

Australian Ballet since 2008.

Both of our companies have a long association

with the WA community and a commitment to

EXCELLENCEINOURCHOSENdžELDS/URRELATIONSHIPhas been built around our shared values and with

that, has come shared success.

Through our Principal Partnership, Woodside has

enabled West Australian Ballet to reach greater,

more diverse audiences across the state.

In 2015, the majestic Hearson’s Cove near Karratha

in the Pilbara was the setting for Embraceable You: Balanchine on the Beach. In addition to supporting

this tour, Woodside’s funding made possible the

INCLUSIONOFAONE ODžPIECEBYYOUNGLOCALDANCEstudents, who opened the performance. This tour

demonstrated a commitment by government and

industry working together to contribute to the

strength and vitality of regional Western Australia.

As we look to season 2016 we anticipate being

captivated with each production, culminating with

audience favourite, The Nutcracker which will

enthral children and adults alike with its

enchanting dancing and exceptional score.

We encourage you to join with us in supporting

Season 2016.

Dear friends,

We have it! Another year of artistic excitement

is waiting for you at WAB. 2016 will be a remarkable

year for our patrons and WA communities. ‘Colourful,

artistic diversity’ has been my motivation in building

this programme, which is one of the most ambitious

in the Company’s history.

The creation of a major new production is simmering

away in Maylands. The most beloved classical ballet,

The Nutcracker, will be revisited for you in the most

classical and traditional of ways: the growing

Christmas tree, the rats, the soldiers, the Land of

Sweets and the Snow Flakes… everything that

represents our cherished Nutcracker memories

will be on His Majesty’s stage.

In Europe, Christmas was always my favorite time

of the year – 30 cm of snow outside, a glowing

chimney, preparing the Christmas tree with the

family and hoping that Santa Claus wouldn’t forget

anyone. That very special atmosphere of a European

white Christmas is exactly what I want to share with

you all.

This new production will be a choreographic

collaboration between the three artists who know

your taste and expectations better than anybody:

WAB’s Principal Dancer Jayne Smeulders, my wife

Sandy Delasalle and me. We will make sure that the

dream and the magic of The Nutcracker will take

you on an unforgettable journey to the Land of

Sweets and beyond.

Quarry 2016 will be a ‘potpourri’ of short works,

including two masterworks from one of the most

talented choreographers of this century, David

Dawson. His brilliant piece, 5, is a virtuosic pas de

cinq performed on an original score of Adolphe

!DAM/URDANCERSWILLCOMBINEVELOCITYANDtechnique to literally make you dizzy. A second work,

On the Nature of Daylight, is a beautiful and exquisite

duo performed to the music of Max Richter.

O V E R V I E W

Talented young Australian choreographer, Craig

Davidson, will create a new piece for us, where

his taste for beauty and aestheticism is sure to

illuminate the Quarry. And WAB soloist, Andre

Santos, will revisit his work, In BlackdžRSTPRESENTEDduring our 2014 Genesis season) augmented for

our season ‘under the stars’.

To conclude this eclectic Quarry programme,

To the Pointe COMBINESTHREEDIDžERENTWORLDSHIPhop, contemporary dance and classical ballet, and

is a choreographic collaboration from dancers in

the Company.

In May we will transport you to the magical world

of Beauty & the Beast. Choreographed by David

Nixon, this fairytale story is set to the glorious

music of Bizet, Saint- Saens, Debussy, Poulenc

and Glazunov.

For September, we will present an exclusive

double-bill. The fascinating and immortal

Shakespearean tale of star-crossed lovers will be
