I Help WantedOur current maintenance person is moving out of state soon and we are looking for a willing and qualified person to fit the bill for one of our few paid positions at EF&GA. If you or someone you know is interested, there will be a detailed description of the job duties on the web site http://www.escondidofishandgame.com

I NRA Metallic Cartridge Reloading (11/4/2017)The class is BACK! Although ammunition has plentifully come back to the market for now, there are restrictions that are being generated to hinder such purchases. It behooves one to have knowledge. Something that no one can take away. There is, again, opportunity to learn reloading techniques that will allow you to produce timely, consistent, accurate ammunition while receiving NRA certified reloading instruction. The class is divided into two parts: The First Part is strictly academic in structure and conducted at the EF&GA meeting hall. This session, is on Saturday, Nov 4th, 2017 and will run from 8:00 – 12:00. The Second Part is a “Hands On” reloading bench experience. This session generates the practical, detailed experience necessary while you successfully complete a number of your personal reloads. Scheduling the second session will be at a mutually agreed to time and date. This scheduling will be completed at the 1st session. The cost is two tiered: EF&GA members = $100; non-members = $110. For those individuals beginning and are without any reloading supplies (empty cases, powder, primers, etc..) a $10 surcharge will be applied. Prior registration and a $20 deposit is required to secure a place in this class. Registration is necessary and limited. For more information, contact Elvio Marchi at [email protected] or 760-734-3942

I Air Pistol PracticeKevin Miller runs the Air Pistol Practice in the Meeting Hall and it will resume operation starting in November. It is held on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Tuesday night each month from 6-8 PM.

Contact Paul Hendrikson 760-522-4660 I NRA Home Defense Class (12/30/2017)This will make the perfect holiday present, whether for you, your loved ones, and/or friends! It is also scheduled on a Saturday. Home intrusions and robberies have been making the news daily. This one-day class addresses range exercises that emphasize potential home intruder encounters, movement to cover and use of cover/concealment, awareness, avoidance, and dealing with single to multiple threats, and a classroom session that expands upon the concepts you experience on the range and more. It includes the NRA certificate and handbook. This is an intermediate class: Students (adults 21+ who must have prior basic to intermediate experience/training in the safe use of, and legally be able to use handguns) will shoot their own handguns and ammunition. This class is listed on the NRA training website under Self Defense, NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course at: http://tinyurl.com/y8ovc7aj To reserve your spot and for more information, email or call Bill Magdych: [email protected] 858-356-4019. Prior registration is required. Open to the public. Please let me know if you are an EFGA member. Note that all participants registered by November 30 are eligible for a discount and EFGA members receive an additional discount.

I Pistol Range PolitenessOn the East end of the Pistol Range, the bench was designed to be adjustable so that it can accommodate standard height as well as a wheelchair accessible height. A person who is mobility-challenged is at a disadvantage when it comes to adjusting the bench. If you change the bench height for an event or for your own use, please set it back to the lower height before you leave.

In its infinite wisdom the California Legislature has decided to continue the war against the 2ndAmendment. As law abiding citizens

we have little choice, at this point, but to follow the law as written and deal with it as best we can. The problem with most gun laws is that they tend to

be written by people who seem to have little understanding of the meaning of “Law” let alone “guns “or how they apply to Constitutional Rights such as

described in the 2nd Amendment. Alternatively, perhaps they simply do not care.None-the-less we still have to deal with it all. For me, the question then becomes; “How does EF&GA deal with the new gun laws”? The short answer is that the rules we enforce are the administrative and safety rules that are published by our BOD and that apply to our range. Every gun owner is expected to know and understand the laws applicable to their own firearm(s). EF&GA does not accept the responsibility for seeing that every gun fired on our range meets all California regulations…that is the gun owner’s responsibility. Having said that, EF&GA certainly does not encourage its members to bring firearms onto the range that are not California compliant. For me, my job and that of all RSOs and members, for that matter, is to see that any firearm used on our range is used in the safest possible manner. I realize that California Gun Laws tend to be are poorly written and confusing at best. Don’t let that stop you from doing your best to understand them.I recently read an article which said that “Hatchet Throwing” is one on the fastest growing sports in this country. Well fancy that! EF&GA has a two areas set aside for learning this growing sport. Hay bales serve as a backstop and the “Hatchet Ranges” get a fair amount of use. When doing so, be sure to keep an eye out for our “friends” with rattles. Squirrels like to dig under the hay and our “friends” like to eat them. I will also say that contrary to what is often seen in the movies, throwing your tomahawk (hatchet) at the bad guy has always seemed like a bad idea to me. Better to save it for close up fighting. Same goes for your knife for that matter. Less anyone starts jumping to conclusions; I do not encourage anyone to try fighting with knives and tomahawks! I am just saying...

September Contest: We had a good turnout this event. 14 entrants filled out the field in Pistol and Revolver alone. This event has also drawn a number of new entrants from both inside and outside of EF&GA. Hats off to our club Cracker Shoot Chair, Al Anzelone, who shot Cap and Ball revolver for the first time in competition. BTW......., he DID NOT finish last.Next Contest: November 26th is our first “Across the Course” shoot. Competitors will have the opportunity to shoot 3 rounds total at3 steel targets, at each range from 25 to 125 yards, in 25 yard increments. 1 point for each target knocked down. 18 points possible. There will be 3 classes like normal, Open Rifle, Primitive Rifle, and Cartridge Rifle. Due to the length of time involved in completing this course of fire, there will be NO PISTOL shoot in November. RIFLE WILL START at 09:00 AM, and run until completed. A FREE blind raffle is planned for paid entrants. Time permitting, we will have a brief, (Free), special event shoot after the last competition relay. (I will need help after the last competition relay to set it up)

Practical Black Powder Accuracy: Part 3

Now pick a patch lube and/or solvent. Some people prefer liquid patch lubes and some prefer grease patch lubes. Both have advantages and disadvantages. I am not going to touch on that now and will discuss it more in a future article. For now, pick a lube and use it both sparingly and consistently for the testing. For liquid lubes try 3 or 4 drops per patch and squeeze it out with your fingers. Take 10 or more pre-cut patches and squeeze them together tightly with a paper clamp, or even a shop vise. Place them in an air tight container a couple of days before you shoot to allow the lube to wick through the material. For strip patches, squirt a thin line of lube down the centerline of the patch. Spread it out with your fingers and roll the strip tightly into a cylinder. Squeeze or clamp it as described above. Place the rolled strips in an airtight container to wick. For grease patches, spread it on with your fingers and squeeze/wipe off as much as you can to make each patch consistent with the others.Last, but not least, you need lead round balls. Commercial swaged round balls can be purchased in diameters of .010 and .005 smaller than your bore. (For .50 caliber this would be .490 and .495 balls) You can mold your own

How to place a classified ad

in the newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.

Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.

It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:

Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 catego-ries, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.

Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertise-ment. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.

Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommend-ed unless they are well known acronyms.

Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”

Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

balls, but will have to deal with the sprue. (Sprue gets centered on the top of the ball when seated to minimize rotational mass anomalies)Now, after two pages of this BS we get to the fun part. Go to the range. Very early, or very late is good, with no wind and light attendance on most days. Set up your target at 75 yards. I say 75 yards because 50 yards is too short a difference to see definitive results, and at 100 yards the differences in patch thickness may print you off a 24" frame.Pick a powder charge to start with. Another “Rule of Thumb” for powder charges is, One and a Half times your caliber. Ok, for a .50 caliber that would be 75 grains of 2F powder. With your target set at 75 yards, load your rifle with 70 grains of 2F powder. Take your first selection of patches, (say the number .10 patches), center the pre-cut patch over the bore, center the ball and start it in the barrel with the short starter. If you are using strip patches, overlap the center of the bore, and seat the ball in the center of the strip material. For strip patches, only seat the ball to JUST BELOW the crown of the muzzle. This avoids having too much flap over the ball when you seat it with the long leg of the short starter. Using a REALLY SHARP knife, trim the excess patch strip square and flush with the muzzle. Try not to drop your rifle or cut your fingers while you do this. We will make fun of you. Seat the ball with the long end of the short starter and drive it home with your ram rod. Cap it and you’re ready to fire. Now. Shoot five round from the bench at your 75 yard target. Be as consistent in your bench shooting technique as possible. (10 rounds is statistically better but few people are going to bother). After shooting your first test relay, call the range cold and go down to replace your target

RULES TO LIVE BY1. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded

Jr Marksmanship Inter-Service Working Party

For the second year in a row, the Jr Marksmanship Program

has been proud to host the members of the Civil Air Patrol, Sea

Cadets and the Young Marines, as well as a few of our own

Jr shooters for the 2nd annual Jr Marksmanship Inter-Service

Working Party.

The day started out warm but not to hot. The young adults got

a lot done in a little time. The work included pulling weeds

and trimming trees in and around the pistol range, sorting over

100 lbs of brass, putting up new target backers, mining over

2000lbs of lead, Filling over 100 new sandbags, cleaning out

the refrigerator in the Jr shed and helping Ray and Pamela with

the beautiful roses. It was truly amazing to see how well the

kids worked together to get everything done.

I would like to give a special thank you to a few people that

went above and beyond to make sure that everything went

smoothly. The first would be Laurie Bresnahan, she volunteered

to cook hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone. She not only

took care of getting all the food that we needed, but she

also made sure that it was ready on time and that everyone

got enough to eat. Not to mention that she made sure that

everything was cleaned up by the time that we were done.

Next is Ray Bucholz, Ray donated over $300 worth of raffle

prizes for the kids. He also worked with some of the kids in

the rose garden. Last but not least, Ed Migdal. Ed helped keep

make sure that everyone knew what needed to be done. Thanks

to Ed’s guidance, the pistol range looks amazing. And while

everyone did a great job, these three individuals put themselves

into key positions that really made a difference.

To all my fellow Marines out there, Happy Birthday, November 10th, 1775, 241 years of

protecting this great nation. Semper Fidelis.

To the all of the veterans out there, Happy Veteran’s Day, Thank you for your service.

and brown backing paper as needed. Get back to the range house and write down the distance, powder load, ball and patch size on the target. Save it. Move to the next patch thickness and repeat. Continue testing with increasing thicknesses of patching while taking notes on each test string. When you reach a point where you can’t load a ball without bashing on it, you’re done. You should be able to short start the ball with a single sharp slap of your palm on the short starter without deforming the ball. You should be able to use your ram rod to drive the ball down to the top of your powder charge in one or two strokes. If you need to use a hammer to short start the ball, or drive the ramrod home, the combination you are using is too tight. Lead round balls are SOFT. Bashing the nose of a ball flat with your short starter or ramrod is not a good thing. As I indicated in the previous article, round ball ballistics are very poor. Shooting a flat nosed round ball is an extremely inaccurate way to waste powder and lead. (How many SUPERSONIC vehicles or objects do you see with a flat nose ?) Now, take a look at all of your targets and your notes. Some groups will be larger or smaller than others. Most likely you will start with large groups, The groups will get smaller. The groups will then open up again. Write down what ball and patch combo provided the smallest groups. Whichever one that was. is the “RIGHT” ball/patch combo for your rifle. Go buy 5 yards, (or more), of that material from the same source and you’re set for a couple of years. Assuming your rifle was roughly “sighted in” your groups were “on” the 24" frame at 75yards. Your groups are probably not “zeroed” on the center of the target. Don’t bother to make sight adjustments for anything other than windage because.. We are not done yet.Now we get to do some more shooting and testing. Yeah, I know. You just shot 30 balls and 2,100 grains of powder. For that expense and time you found a ball patch combo that works for that individual rifle. Now we are going to take it a step further. Starting at 50 grains of powder and a fresh target, shoot five more rounds from the bench using the patch and ball that worked best for you in the previous test. Swap targets and write your notes, Now shoot 55 grains. Repeat the above test by increasing the powder charge by 5 grains for each 5 shot string until you get to the point that you realize that the groups are getting unacceptably large. Depending on the rifle that could be anywhere from 85 grain of powder on up. When you reach that point stop. Look at your targets and your notes. Which group was the smallest ? That powder charge, whatever it was, is the most accurate charge you can shoot with that ball and patch combination. Now you can zero your rifle to hit Point of Aim, or 6:00 o’clock, at whatever range you choose. (Choose 100 yards and POA. I’ll explain next month).I am going to break off at this point and leave you with another teaser URL link. http://blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com/This link takes you to a web page by Dutch Schoultz. Drop $20 and he will send you a 16 page packet that explains how to get the accuracy that you’re looking for. He explains it better than I can. He also sends quite a bit of info on target interpretation. It is more than worth the price.I’m going to leave it at that for this month. Practice more..
