'Ihe MountaiOOale center survey District is a small village center grouping consisting of a frame store/residence canbination built originally about 1870 and expan:1ed in the 1890's, the Mountai.male Union Olapel, built in 1913, a frame and brick circa 1935 ~ow, and its frame garage, which was originally used as a school in the early 2oth century prior to about 1930. '!he district is located at the intersection of Mountaimal.e Road and Pc1Nell Road, the functional center of the village of Mountaindale, Frederick County, Marylarrl. '!he surrounding village buildings not included in the survey district are IOOStly post-1945 in date and are scattered at irregular intervals alorg both sides of the two roads to the east, west, and north of the intersection, with a no:iern developrrent located off Mountairrlale Road in a cul-de-sac to the south. {An additional survey district of residences alon;J Mountairrlale Road to the west of the Mountaindale Center SUrvey District, between Bethel Road and Putman Road, is under study at this writing. 'Ihis district would be called Mountairrlale Road SUrvey District.) '!he character of the village is linear, with frequent open fields, wooded sections, or large side yards which break up the continuity of the snall groups of continuous dwellings on l:x>th sides of Mountairrlale Road. '!he contril::lltin;J buildings are located mainly on the south side of Mountaindale Road and the store/residence is located at the northwest corner of Mountairrlale and Powell Roads. A large open field separates th" store/residence from the properties on the north arrl west. A concrete blcx commercial garage is located west of the store on the same property, but is not included within the survey district bouOOacy. '!he buildings are occupied and in use as built, with a no:iern convenience store occupying the first story of the store/residence building arrl apartments on the upper story. The condition of the buildings is good.

Folla.ving are brief descriptions of the buildings in the survey district and the names and addresses of the owners:

Charles Rice store and :Residence (Mountairrlale Convenience store) , 6726 Mountairrlale Rd.: '!he building is in two sections formi.rg a rough L-plan with a corner tower containing the entrance. '!he two-story section facin;J Mountairrlale Road is probably the earliest section and may contain log structure. It was probably built by David Warner alx>ut 1870, accordin;J to land records and architectural details. '!he exterior is covered with german siding and there were probably originally three bays or four bays on the first story and three on the second. '!he first story has been altered over the years as the size of the store established by Cliarles Rice in the building in the 1890's changed. 'Ihe second story windows are 2/2. A one-story porch exterrls across the south elevation, aroun::l the co:rner tower and entrance, and across the east elevation of the secon:l section of the building. '!he porch columns are turned and the roof is st.a.rxiin;J seam metal. Interior end chimneys rise above the pressed metal roof. '!he second section of the building extends northward from the polygonal corner turret with a conical roof and has four bays. '!his section was possibly added after an early 1890's fire destroyed part of the original building. Accordin;J to Mrs. Alice Fisher, a local resident, the livin;J quarters in the fir~·

Prepare both a summary paragraph of significance and a general statement of history and support.

'Ihe Mountairnale Center SUrvey District is a fair example of a small crossroads ccmununity of the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. 'lhe main elements which define a tc:Mn, a cormnercial enterprise, residences, a church, and a school, are all present in sane form in the district, although only four J::uildings are included. '!he Cllarles Rice store was wilt about 1870 as a residence, probably by David Warner. In the early 1890's, the wilding was purchased by Cllarles Rice frcm his IIK>ther and, after a fire which partially destroyed the structure, a store roan was J::uilt on the rear of the original residence. '!he architecture of the J::uilding reflects the period, with a corner turret giv~ a varied roofline and pressed metal details on both the exterior and

ie interior. In 1930, Rice purchased the school J::uildings after the school was consolidated with Lewistc:Mn and erected the bungalow on the site. 'Ihe style of the bungalow also shows the current architectural interests of the period, with Arts and Crafts details such as the bracketed eaves and the general design and scale of the house. '!he Union Oiapel of 1913 brought together the Gennan Refonned and German Baptist ccm;Jregations of the area. Its design is typical of many small rural and village churches of the period. '!he village has remained a small, loosely organized group of residences, in spite of IIK>dern infill of the open areas between the older houses and a IIK>dern hous~ development off Mountairnale Road. '!he survey district represents the section of the village with the IIK>St defined center of commercial, social, and religious activity dur~ the historic period.

Mountai.OOale Center SUrvey District is one of several small villages in the Lewistown and Frederick Election Districts of the Frederick Pl~ Region which have similarities in scale, architecture, and historic use. Bethel, Cllarlesville, and Hansonville in the Frederick Election District share with Mountaindale a crossroads location, with a church, store, or school sited on a prominent corner. Nearby are farnsteads and a few small i.rxlividual residences along the roads leading into the crossroads. In several such ccmnunities in the Middletown Valley and elsewhere, the crossroads ccmnunities were an interim IXienarrenon between the isolation of farming an::i the rusiness centers of the larger towns and Frederick City. '!he store or shop provided a vital service and often a mail stop, although Mountairrlale apparently never had a post office, and the church or school was a community center an::i meet~ place. Most of these communities were off the main market and turnpike rcutes and remained small entities, with vernacular hlildings ·""low~ their long-starrlirg traditional techniques and values. With the better

'Ihe inner argle of the two sections facirg northwest is ncM occupied by various additions to the structure arx:l contain apartnents. Sane of these additions are concrete block. Additional concrete block storage sections have been added to the north errl of the sea:ni section. 'Ihe interior of the store has been greatly altered with expansions into the first section, rut the late 1890's store roan is clearly defined in the sea:ni section by the pressed metal ceilirg with a dl:opp:d border arx:l cornice. One or two sections of wocxi shelvirg still are in place along the east wall arx:l the wocxi floor appears to be of the 1890's.

Cllarles Rice House, 6805 lbmtaimale Road: 'Ihe 1-1/2 story frame hmgalow was l:uilt by Olarles Rice about 1935, the date estimated by larx:l records arx:l architectural style. It has brick veneer arx:l a starx:ling seam gable roof with a one-story porc:h on the north elevation un:ier a large dormer with a group of three 3/1 windows. 'Ihe dormer has weatherboard siding. 'Ihe eaves of the roof have brackets arx:l the main elevation has three :bays with paired 3/1 windows. 'IWo interior errl chimneys rise at each gable errl. 'Ihe frame garage of the house was identified by Mrs. Alice Fisher as one of two J::uildirgs of the Mountairoale school which was located on the site fran about 1881. 'Ihe school closed in 1930 arx:l Charles Rice p.lrChased the property, deroolishing one of the school J::uildirgs to J::uild the hmgalow.

Mountairoale Union Olapel, south side of Mountain::1ale Road: 'Ihe frame church is a one-story structure with german siding arx:l a projectirg bell tower with the main entrance on the north elevation. A marble date stone at the northwest corner gives the date of construction as 1913, confirm=d by larx:l records. '!he double main entrance doors are five panels each un:ier a Gothic arch transom. 'Ihe windows flanking the bell tower are also Gothic arc:hed, with colored Queen Anne sash. Above the doorway is a pent roof arx:l a small diamond-shaped window. 'Ihe belfry is open, with a scroll-sawn :balustrade and a pyramidal hipped roof of pressed metal. 'Ihe main roof is also pressed metal with bracketed eaves. 'Ihe east arx:l west elevations have flat-arc:hed Queen Arme style windows. At the south elevation of the church is a one-story addition with a concrete block fourx:Jation arx:l pressboard sidirg.
