Dear Friends: I don't know when, but at a certain point in my life the Jewish new year eclipsed the secular new year in importance. This was not the case during my younger years. Growing up, my family and my community moved to the rhythm of the Gregorian calendar. The anticipation of a new year, as December gave way to January, brought some small measure of personal reflection. But not much. The Jewish new year offers us all a much more significant opportunity for reflection. We don't merely make a vain resolution or two. Rather, we consider the state of our souls. We think about the state of the Jewish people. We ponder our moral behavior and recommit ourselves to our most important relationships, including our relationship with G-d. I am not trying to detract from the excitement of this new year, 2017. But I do encourage all of us to view our lives in a religious -- not merely secular -- context. We move to a Jewish rhythm. May we not be seduced and distracted by society's prevailing secularism. And may we all reap the manifold rewards of the religious heritage we have been blessed to inherit. L'Shalom, Rabbi Jeffrey Weill

Who Runs Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation?
Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation is a self-governing organization. Our Executive Committee and Board of Trustees provide oversight and strategic direction for each area and the congregation as a whole and are governed by our bylaws. Rabbi Jeffrey Weill has “power of the pulpit” authority. He oversees educational and social action programs of the congregation and is final decision-maker on halakhic practices of our congregation. Jeanette Sigler, as Executive Director, is responsible for the administration of the congregation as well as the building, personnel, security and budget-keeper.
Our synagogue thrives because of the involvement of its members. One way to be involved is to serve on a committee. If you are interested in joining a committee, please contact Jeanette Sigler in the office at 847-675-4141.
Here is a summary of the committees and functions as excerpted from the bylaws:
Adult Education Committee: Work in conjunction with the clergy and staff to administer and promote classes and programs of Jewish education and interest for our adult congregation members and greater community.
Membership/Retention Committee: Work in conjunction with the clergy and staff to plan and supervise the enrollment of new members in the congregation and establish a program to encourage the retention of existing members.
Religious Services Committee: Cooperate with the Rabbi, Hazzan and Educational Director in planning the ritual and worship of the congregation.
Ways and Means Committee: Work in conjunction with the Executive Director and staff to plan and promote fundraising projects.
Capital Funds Committee: Be responsible for the continuing and long-term fundraising projects of the congregation—such as the endowment program, memorial plaques, the Tree of Life and the annual High Holiday Appeal.
Religious Education Committee: Work in conjunction with the clergy to establish the goals and educational objectives and standards of the Religious School, including preparation for b’nai mitzvah.
Family Programming Committee: Work in conjunction with the clergy and staff to arrange and promote a program of activities suitable and appropriate for the synagogue families.
Housing and Beautification Committee: Work in conjunction with the Executive Director to maintain all of the real and personal properties of the congregation.
Social Action Committee: Work in conjunction with the clergy and staff to bring to the attention of the congregation issues concerning the social, political, environmental and economic welfare of our community, our nation, Israel and the world.
Strategic Planning Committee: Have the responsibility for developing long-term strategic plans which are consistent with the goals of the congregation and designed to meet the needs and wants of the community.
Communications/Marketing Committee: Work in conjunction with the Executive Director and staff to manage communications to the congregation and community through bulletins, electronic newsletters, publications, our website and social media.
The leaders of our congregation follow the organizational structure prescribed and want you to know where you can help.

As the new President of our Men’s Club, I want to thank Cy Jablo and our entire board for the hard work that they did over the years to make our Men’s Club a strong and viable auxiliary of our congregation. Our Men’s Club is now a member of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. Through our affiliation, we plan to obtain new ideas for programs and speakers that appeal to all ages I would like to welcome and encourage all current members to renew your Men’s Club membership and all other men to join our Men’s Club. In addition, if you have any friends or family who would be interested in joining our Men’s Club, it would be greatly appreciated. Our Men’s Club is open to all Jewish men. As we make the transition for our new officers and board, I am reaching out to all men to suggest and help us plan current and new programs and events of interest to you and your families. Our goal is to provide meaningful programs that appeal to all ages. Your ideas are most appreciated. Together, we can make a difference and make our Men’s Club even stronger and better. Feel free to contact me by phone (847) 910-2397 or email me at [email protected]. I am looking forward to working with everyone. Sincerely, Steve Hara, President EHNTJC Men’s Club
In Loving Memory
If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified
remembrance is through a memorial plaque. Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and
yahrzeit date, is mounted in the Memorial Alcove in our chapel.
On the day of the yahrzeit, your loved one’s name
is listed on a tablet in the chapel alcove. For more information or to order a plaque, contact Bill Gerber in the synagogue office.
The following memorial plaques have recently been dedicated in the chapel:
Linda Rochelle Ratsky by Cy and Sally Jablo
Herbert Marshall Wasserman by Carolyn Cooper

HERE’S A GREAT WAY TO HELP THE SYNAGOGUE AND IT’S SO EASY!!
If you shop at Jewel, purchase our $100 Jewel cards. You get full value and the synagogue gets money back for each card sold. Jewel cards can be acquired from Jeanette Sigler in the synagogue office.
SOCIAL ACTION CORNER January/February 2017 –
Evelyn Lowenthal – Chair
During 2016 the Social Action Committee activities included continuation of the following:
Participation in both the Pesach and Rosh Hashanah Maot Chitim food box packing events.
Reinforcement of the EHNTJC relationship with SHALVA by maintaining their informational posters and the cell phone collection program.
Presentation of three programs: First was "Fighting Sex Trafficking: The Jewish Community Takes a Stand" presented by the Jewish Coalition Against Sex Trafficking (JCAST) Chicago, an initiative of National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) Chicago North Shore section. Our second program was “A Chance to Choose: Carrying Your Medical Agenda into the End of Life” by CJE Senior Life’s Joan Richman Ente. The final program was brought to us by The Decalogue Society of Lawyers, “Illinois Marijuana Laws” presented by State Representative Lou Lang.
Two service dates for EHNTJC members who volunteered at the Uptown Café.
For 2017 we plan to continue our ongoing activities and have scheduled two service dates at the Uptown Café. Watch for upcoming programs.
EHNTJC ADULT EDUCATION Diane Rosenfeld, Outgoing-Chair
Ongoing Classes: Explore “The Land Beyond Torah” with Rabbi Weill by studying the early prophetic books: Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. You are welcome to come whenever you can. “Wisdom of Our Sages” meets on most Shabbat afternoons after Kiddush with Rabbi Victor Weissberg. Intermediate Hebrew with Charles Kriesberg is an ongoing class held on Wednesday afternoons. Whither Series The four major Jewish denominations have undergone significant changes in recent years and decades. Some longtime adherents of the movements are wondering, “What has happened to the Judaism of my youth? Whither my movement?” The EHNTJC Adult Education Committee is pleased to host a series of programs, featuring knowledgeable insiders, exploring the trends and changes afoot within Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, and Reform Judaism. Please join us! Morning minyan and breakfast will precede the presentations. Save the Dates: April 2, April 23, May 7 and June 11
I would like to welcome Esther Javetz, our new Adult Education Chair. I look forward to an amazing year ahead.
