Walking without shoes to top of Ezofuji (1898m)

TRANSCRIPT

Page 3: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Japan is volcanic, so there are many Fuji look-alikes, from the

south...

Page 4: Ezo Fuji On Foot

…to the north.

Page 5: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Hokkaido’s second largest volcano is Yotei-san, or Ezo-fuji.

Page 6: Ezo Fuji On Foot

The closer we got, the more I was tempted.

Page 7: Ezo Fuji On Foot

It looked as pretty as a picture.

Page 8: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Mami applies insect repellent.

Page 9: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Then she sets off through the forest.

Page 10: Ezo Fuji On Foot

These are the last cherry blossoms we’ll see.

Page 11: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Soon we climb above the tree-line.

Page 12: Ezo Fuji On Foot

We come to patches of snow.

Page 13: Ezo Fuji On Foot

The view is like that from a plane.

Page 14: Ezo Fuji On Foot

It gets steeper, so I kick in toe holds.

Page 15: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Can you see the worry on Mami’s face?

Page 16: Ezo Fuji On Foot

It’s really dramatic up here.

Page 17: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Mami doesn’t dare walk upright.

Page 18: Ezo Fuji On Foot

It looks worse than it is!

Page 19: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Eventually we arrive at the hut.

Page 20: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Time to catch our breath.

Page 21: Ezo Fuji On Foot

And sunbathe!

Page 22: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Then, we push on up.

Page 23: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Mami looks for alpine flowers.

Page 24: Ezo Fuji On Foot

No, not Edelweiss.

Page 25: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Here’s the hut from the top.

Page 26: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Wim walks around the rim.

Page 27: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Actually, there are two volcanic craters.

Page 28: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Here’s one of the ‘stations’ on the rim.

Page 29: Ezo Fuji On Foot

I’m so glad we did this.

Page 30: Ezo Fuji On Foot

There’s a frozen lake deep down.

Page 31: Ezo Fuji On Foot

It’s very rocky, but there is a path.

Page 32: Ezo Fuji On Foot

I manage okay without shoes.

Page 33: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Though I sometimes have to clamber.

Page 34: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Mami demonstrates taking a picture.

Page 35: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Here’s where the old hut once stood.

Page 36: Ezo Fuji On Foot

And this might have been its bath.

Page 37: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Far in the distance is a lake.

Page 38: Ezo Fuji On Foot

It’s called Toyako (Lake Toya).

Page 39: Ezo Fuji On Foot

‘Proper’ mountaineering gear.

Page 40: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Mami poses for another shot.

Page 41: Ezo Fuji On Foot

I creep to the edge.

Page 42: Ezo Fuji On Foot

And crawl underneath.

Page 43: Ezo Fuji On Foot

This is my favourite view.

Page 44: Ezo Fuji On Foot

One final look.

Page 45: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Mami poses at the very top.

Page 46: Ezo Fuji On Foot

And so do I.

Page 47: Ezo Fuji On Foot

We have a rest before the climb down.

Page 48: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Easy does it! (It could be the beach.)

Page 49: Ezo Fuji On Foot

At the bottom we make new friends.

Page 50: Ezo Fuji On Foot

We join them in their tent that evening.

Page 51: Ezo Fuji On Foot

Well done, the two of you!
