• What is desertification and how does it affect the nomadic Bedouin?

• Who lives and uses mountain environments?

Wider human uses of extreme environments. Energy and

Tourism.

Main points today:

• How could the Sahara provide energy and at what cost?

• How is tourism threatening the high Andes?

• Can we manage extreme environments sustainably?

Exam practice and skills

Exam skills:

• Revise! Make basic notes to revise from at home.

• Marks available, directional words. What answer are they looking for?

• Name a case study or two.

• Use KEY terms in your sentences.

• Use the data they give you. Use numbers and names. Describe trends or

patterns.

• Don’t repeat the question, full sentences not needed!

• Stick to timings.

• Stay calm and show ‘em what you know!

The following questions are all from the June 2010 Extreme Environments

exam.

There are two parts to the exam.

Part 1 : Deserts (25 marks)

Part 2: You choose to write about mountains or Polar environments (25

marks)

Total : 50 marks.

You need to gain just over half, so about 26-28 marks to be sure of

getting a C grade.
