Message from the Board of Directors Chairman Dennis Stahl
Dennis Stahl (Chair)Michael D. Beldon (Vice Chair)Darryl G. Waldron, PhD (Treasurer)John Feik (Secretary)Michael Kreager (Assistant Secretary)
The year 2011 was filled with challenges. Thanks to a great management team and dedicated staff, we were able to continue moving forward.
The Board is especially grateful to Mary Beth Fisk and Linda Myers for assuming the lead-
ership responsibilities as president and chief operating officers of South Texas Blood & Tis-sue Center (STBTC) and QualTex Laboratories respectively. They both did a superb job and are to be congratulated.
The Blood & Tissue Center met the challenge of the slow down in the health care industry from the recessionary pressures to the global economy. We also moved into the exciting field of regenerative medicine with the formation of GenCure.
QualTex opened its first out-of-state labora-tory in Georgia in the spring of 2011. Since its opening, it continues to expand and replicate the same services that the San Antonio facility offers.
Dr. Norman Kalmin transitioned from the role of QualTex president to that of medical di-

rector. We are delighted that Dr. Kalmin will remain active with the organization. His wealth of knowledge and experience is invaluable.
Most of the year the board of directors was busy searching for a chief executive officer who could take both STBTC & QualTex into the fu-ture. The Board needed someone with business acumen in the health care industry. We found that skill in Dennis Fallen.
Mr. Fallen has over 25 years of experience in the health care industry and has been a man-ager and leader of start up ventures as well as large public companies and organizations. His background includes biological material man-agement services, support for disease research and the development of clinical trials. Mr. Fallen began his duties in April, 2012.
We look forward to another excellent year of service to our community. The dedicated employees at all levels exemplify exceptional professionalism. We remain committed to be a world-class organization providing high-quality biological products and testing services.
“I am delighted and honored to be joining you as the CEO of the consolidated operations of STBTC and QualTex. The organization has a tremendous reputation, both in the local community and the blood and plasma industry. I look for-ward to working with you to continue to make our organiza-tion a leader in the health care industry.”

• A website for donors, “Donating for Life,” was launched so donors could schedule donations and redeem points online.
• High school donors contributed 21% of our total blood draw. This year’s “Get the Facts” theme encouraged 29,826 students in 148 participating schools to learn more about blood donation.
South Texas Blood & Tissue Center
• STBTC was honored to collaborate with the military in 2011. The Medical Education and Training Campus at Fort Sam Houston serves the Navy, Army and Air Force. This course in-cluded STBTC as part of its clinical rotation to train medical laboratory technologists.
• The Wellness Rewards Program allowed blood donors to receive select health screening exams at no cost. STBTC worked with the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association to facilitate these exams for the community.
• In 2011, STBTC donors gave 127,410 red blood cells, 28,969 platelet donations and 340 plasma units.
• A major upgrade to the mainframe computer system improved the flow of information.
• Media promotional drives contributed 13,415 blood donations. Print, radio and television stations are instrumental in attracting donors.
• GenCure, an affiliate of STBTC, was introduced in August and focuses on providing cell and tissue services for regenerative medicine. GenCure encompasses STBTC’s marrow regis-tration, tissue services, peripheral blood and cord blood cellular therapy programs.
South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) is a not-for-profit community blood center specializing in a variety of blood services. STBTC Blood Services De-partment provides blood, plasma, platelets and other blood components to over 100 hospitals and clinics in 43 South Texas counties.
Barbara Brinkman won the biggest donor prize in STBTC history: a Toyota Tundra truck. “I like knowing my donations can help cancer patients and people in the community,” said Brinkman.
