Those claiming savings are achieved oſten seem unable to point to where they have gone. In our case I am happy to report that the annual savings achieved in the first two months is $3 million. This has been achieved as a result of savings in Workers Compensation insurance, savings in general insurances and redundancies for positions that will not be replaced. To reiterate, this $3 million saving achieved to date is an annual saving. While it is too early to put a number on further annual savings from the merger, there is no doubt it is likely they will be substantial. Given my comments about debate over whether these saving are real or not I have decided that all ‘merger’ related savings should be deposited annually in a special Merger Savings Community Benefit Fund. This Merger Savings Fund will provide an on-going pool of funds for projects that directly benefit the community. It will not be used to reduce spending in other operational areas of Council’s Budget. The NSW Government has already provided $15 million for community benefit projects. The Merger Savings Fund will allow funding of these types of projects to be carried on into the future. This approach will ensure a significant ‘dividend’ is delivered to the community each year from the efficiencies achieved from the merging of the three councils. I believe some of these funds should be delivered through a community submission based approach, while other funds should be allocated to new programmes chosen by the elected Council for works that may span a number of years. I will bring this matter to the next Council meeting to formally adopt this approach. Dick Persson AM [email protected]

A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

The level of savings resulting from council amalgamations is a much written about topic, with strongly held opinions on both

sides of the debate. Those claiming savings are achieved often seem unable to point to where they have gone.
