Despite their best efforts, 15-year-old Feargal “Fergie” Ferguson and the dead punk Sid, who only Fergie can see or hear, are no closer to finding out why they’re stuck together. Fergie’s strange abilities are also manifesting themselves in unusual ways, and he’s learning, little by little, to control them — though not why they’ve suddenly manifested.
Meanwhile, the Department for Extra-Usual Affairs is sniffing around, and Dorothy Culpepper has a theory: all the recent peculiar happenings are to do with an entity called Beleth, which Dorothy inadvertently unleashed upon the world more than fifty years ago. But is her theory plausible? And, if so, what’s it all got to do with the murderous Bobby and his weird father? And just what are these strange magpie creatures all about?
Still, Sid and Fergie have settled into an easy, if unorthodox, friendship, and things seem to be looking up on the home front.
