St. Anthony’s Story“Popularly Acclaimed but Little Known”

A character who has enjoyed 800 years of international popularity, but whose realstory is not very well known, will be the hot topic on the east side of Halsted early thisJune. For nine consecutive evenings, from Monday June 5th, through Tuesday June 13th,at 6pm the international hero and household patron, St. Anthony, will be honored, dis-cussed, and even imitated in a traditional manner at his namesake church located at 518West 28th Place here in Bridgeport.

Nell Andrzejewski, the Director of Catholic Church Tours, which coordinates local art, history, and architecture tours of over 100 notable Catholic churches and related destina-tions in the Chicagoland area, will present a brief talk each evening at 6 p.m. Traditionaldevotional prayers and activities will follow and end around 7:00 p.m.

“St. Anthony’s story is centuries old, and yet, in Bridgeport it’s coming alive again.”She stated, “I enjoy opening the doors to what is sacred by ordinary means and theextraordinary treasures that are literally in our backyards.”

Highlighted in the short evening talks will be the art and architecture of some ofBridgeport’s hidden treasures. Two interior murals, the exterior mosaic, and severalexquisite stained glass panels that specifically depict the revered Italian, will be used toillustrate his life and the significance of this beautiful Bridgeport building.

The doors will be open to friends, guests, neighbors- all of Bridgeport - over these ninedays. Sunday will begin the series with a community celebration of the Eucharist at 8:30a.m. (English), 10:00a.m. (Spanish) and 11:30 a.m (English), continue throughout theweek with the evening talks followed by traditional prayers. and conclude on Tuesdaythe 13th with a Mass and “St. Anthony’s Bread”.

The parish Yard Sale/Block Party will be held on Sunday, June 11th from 9am-3pm.

Vietnam Wall of FacesWhen the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washing-

ton, D.C. was finished in 1983, the wall listed approx-imately 58,000 servicemen and women who had eitherdied in action or went missing in action during theVietnam War. Because of a fire at a government stor-age facility in 1973, the U.S. military lost millions ofpersonnel records, including many of those who werelisted on the wall. Although the military and otherorganizations made efforts to recover lost data, 24,000veterans listed on the wall had no photo in theirmilitary records in 2013.

Thanks to a coordinated effort among Illinois news-papers, nearly 100 photos of Illinois veterans havebeen located and submitted to the Wall of Faces (avail-able at: http://www.vvmf.org/wall-of-faces/); however,as of May 1, 2017, Illinois still has 528 servicemem-bers who do not have a photo in the Vietnam VeteransMemorial Fund’s database.

Do you know anyone who should be included? Didyou go to high school or serve with someone whoshould be included? Check your photo archives andyearbooks. Talk to neighbors and former classmates. Please help honor these veterans by putting a face tothe name.

According to the VVMF, the wall was constructedto remind everyone that the names on the wall “repre-sent unique people with hopes, dreams and desires-people who were loved and who are missed every dayby someone they left behind.”

“It is important for us to honor these people whoserved and sacrificed for their country. But, we shouldalso remember that they were people, just like us. Theyenjoyed crazy adventures with high school friends. They had crushes, fell in love and got married. Someeven had children. They were people with special tal-ents and many goals. There are so many stories on TheWall-stories of people as diverse as our nation itself.”

Please help honor these young men and women whogave their lives in Southeast Asia. The first step totelling their stories is to locate their photos.
