    5. READING ACTIVITY.

Blind people might soon start using ponies instead of dogs as guides. In the U.S.,

Cuddles, the worlds first guide pony, started working in May this year. She has

already gotten on and off planes with her owner, Dan Shaw, and gone up and down

    escalators at airports.

Cuddles a miniature pony, is only ! centimeters high and is "ery calm. She is not

scared of traffic and doesnt panic on #usy streets. Dan Shaw who has #een #lind for

!$ years, says, %Cuddles is part of my family now.& 'anet Burleson, Cuddless

trainer, is also "ery pleased with Cuddles. She says, %you can train a horse to do

anything a can do. Cuddles understands !( commands, including )wait and )forward.

*nd she is "ery clean. If she needs to go outside, she stamps her foot+&

here are a lot of good reasons to use miniature horses as guides for the #lind.

-orses ha"e an instinct to guide. If a wild horse goes #lind, another horse will

often look after it. *nd if a rider hurts himself, his horse will often carry him

    safely home.

Miniature ponies li"e ( to / years. 0uide dogs can only work for a#out 1! years.

Its also cheaper to train a guide pony. It costs 2, to train a guide dog, and

only 21, to train a guide pony. -orses ha"e e3cellent memories. hey dont forget

dangerous situations, and they always look for the safest routes. -orses are healthy

and strong and dont get tired if they ha"e to tra"el a long way. hey ha"e also

e3cellent eyes and can see in the dark. -orses dont try to get attention from humans

    all the time like dogs.

Some people says horses are more ner"ous than dogs. %If a horse gets scared, it

wants to run away,& says 4atrick Mactaggart, a professional dog trainer. %I think

dogs will always #e the #est guides for the #lind.& But Dan Shaw doesnt agree. I"ealways lo"ed horses,& he says. %I ne"er e3pected to own one. *nd I ne"er e3pected it

    to #e my eyes.&
