Port Marlborough is progressing an extension of the existing Waikawa Marina to provide additional berthage for the boating community. The extension is planned for the newer area of Marina Zone adjacent to The Snout, immediately to the north of the existing breakwater. The proposal is for the construction of a high-quality marina facility that will provide around 240 new berths. Port Marlborough is interested in hearing the community’s views on the proposal before the design is finalised.

The marina structures will include breakwaters which will form the northern and eastern boundaries of the marina. The breakwaters will be located in significantly deeper water than the existing marina rock breakwaters, thus requiring different construction technology. The new ‘partial depth, fixed panel’ breakwaters will be solid structures suspended from piles that have been driven into the seabed. The breakwaters will extend around eight metres towards the sea floor, leaving a gap of several metres between the breakwater and seafloor which will enable water flow. The berths will be constructed within the breakwater and will be very similar in appearance to the newer berths in Picton Marina.
Immediately north of the marina a small area of the shore-line will be developed to ensure public access to the coastline, including space for dinghy launching to access adjacent swing moorings. The northern breakwater will incorporate a walkway along its full length, providing for public vantage points and fishing.
There are three buildings proposed to provide toilets, showers and laundry facilities for berth holders – the building beside the northern shoreline area will also have publicly available toilets and shelter.
The marina will require a reclamation along the western coastline of the bay to provide an access road and parking for the marina.
A key objective for Port Marlborough in the design and construction of the marina is to ensure the shoreline reclama-tion and any disturbance to the natural character and vegeta-tion of the coastline and sea bed is kept to a minimum.
Resource Consent ProcessResource consent is required from Marlborough District Council for the marina. Port Marlborough has commissioned assessments of the environmental effects of the marina proposal to ensure that actual and potential environmental effects resulting from construction of the marina and from the ongoing marina operation are carefully managed.
