ACADEMIC EXTENSIONBEGINNERS CHESSMonday 11:00am - 11:25am Room 17 Mrs Evelyn Mahony FREEChess develops memory, improves concentration, and develops logical thinking. It also romotes imagination and creativity, teaches independence and develops the ability to think strategically. Learning to play chess at an early age gives students opportunities to develop a skill-set that complements and supplements academic learning and social interaction. Beginners Chess Club is offered to students in Years 2 to 6 who wish to learn the game. Students learn the way each piece can move and practise strategies in a friendly environment. Many of our players are then invited to participate in the Interschool Chess Tournaments at White Rock. Happy playing!

GIRLS CODING CLUBTuesday 11:00am - 11:30am Science Lab Miss Karen Wellard FREEThe demand for computer programmers, software and robotics engineers continues to increase and girls are becoming increasingly interested in pursuing a STEM related career path. Girls in the Coding Club will use Scratch2 to code their own interactive stories, animations and games. Suitable for girls in Years 4 to 6 who have an interest in programming and engineering and want to consolidate and extend classroom-based coding learnings.

SCRATCH JUNIOR CLUBTuesday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Room 4 Mrs Joylene McShane FREEStudents are introduced to simple computer programming language though the use of the Scratch Junior App. They code their own interactive stories, games, animations and practise solving challenges with their ‘tech buddies’. Suitable for students in Prep to Year 3 who want to consolidate classroom-based coding activities and extend their computer programming skills.

WRITERS WORKSHOP Wednesday 11:00am - 11:30am Library Mezzanine Mrs Melissa Szalai FREEStudents in this club learn to write creatively using a variety of prompts such as photographs and objects. Open to students in Years 3 to 6. (Numbers are limited to 10 students so staff can deliver personalised learning).

TOURNAMENT CHESSThursday 11:00am - 11:25am Room 20 Mr Robert Lade FREEIt is widely known that students who play Chess regularly improve school efficiency in different subjects. Tournament Chess is offered to students at both the beginner and more advanced level at Kewarra Beach. We enter teams in the FNQ Championships, which take place three times a year. Students are entered into Premier, A, B or C Grade according to their ability. Chess Club meets once a week and our intra-school championships are held in Term 4. The emphasis of our program is always on participation, personal development and fun. The benefits of chess are many and we encourage anyone from Year 2 onwards to get involved.

BOOK CLUBFriday 11:00am - 11:25am Library Miss Karen Wellard FREE Mrs Kerrie Payne We know how important reading is and Book Club provides students in Years 3 to 5 a great opportunity to read, discuss and bring stories to life through activities such as role-play, discussion, craft, movies and mime.

Effective problem solving is now a pre-requisite skill in all career paths. In Maths Extension classes, students work through a sequence of rigorous mathematical problem-solving challenges to develop creative and analytical thinking skills. Suitable for all students particularly those who want to pursue STEM subjects and career paths. Available to students in Years 4 to 6.

CLASS OPEN READING CLUB (Years 2 and 3)CLASS OPEN STUDY CLUB (Years 4 to 6)Various days, advised by classroom teacher 7:45am - 8:15am Teachers FREELed by their class teacher one morning a week, these clubs are held in each classroom from 7:45am – 8:15am. Designed to promote a love of books and reading, the Open Reading Club gives Years 2 and 3 students an opportunity to engage with books in a relaxed, supported environment, while the Open Study Club is designed to provide Years 4 to 6 students with an opportunity to complete or revise class work and / or assignments with class teacher assistance available.

KBJ KIDS CLUB Monday 7:30am - 8:15am Room 5 Mrs Leonie Ryan FREEto FridayThe KBJ Kids Club offers students an opportunity to be involved in an art / craft / other activity prior to the commencement of the school day. Students may need a snack or drink and all materials will be supplied. To ensure supervision is available, register at Reception before 4:00pm the day prior.

HEALTHY EATING CLUBMonday 11:00am - 11:25am Room 2/3 Mrs Amanda Lade FREEand Friday Focusing on what is a healthy lunch and the benefits of healthy eating. Prep students will look at their own lunches and talk about which foods are healthy, why some foods are good for you and others are not so good.

JOGGING WITH JILL Monday 3:30pm - 4:30pm Oval Ms Jill Boltz $40 per termFriday 3:30pm - 4:30pm Oval Ms Jill Boltz $40 per term $80 per term / two-days Jogging with Jill sessions include a variety of running activities to develop aerobic capacity and endurance. Jill Boltz is a two-time Olympian, a former champion of middle to long distance running whose passion is to inspire people to get moving…..and moving fast! Registration is through Parent Lounge.

P - 2 SONGBIRDS Monday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Room 7 Mrs Kellie Clarke FREESongbirds, our Prep to Year 2 choir, enjoy singing games, vocal activities and performing at school events. The aim is develop a passion for singing and music, which will continue into their primary years and beyond.

YEARS 3 to 6 CHOIR Tuesday 8:00am - 8:45am Chapel Mrs Sue Stitt FREE Mrs Kellie ClarkeThe KBJ Choir is open to students in Years 3 to 6. The choir sings a diverse range of songs and regularly works towards performances in concerts or at the Cairns Eisteddfod. The KBJ Choir combines with the Years 3 to 6 WRJ Choir to perform at the Coconut Carnival and school events.

JUNIOR CRAFT CLUB Tuesday 11:00am - 11:25am Library Mrs Kerrie Payne FREEMrs Payne and the library monitors will be running a craft club again this term. Junior students are welcome to come and try their hand at various crafts, such as soap carving, jewellery making, play dough, designing masks and greeting cards and as many craft projects as we can fit in! Suitable for students in Prep to Year 2.

ART LOUNGETuesday 11:00am - 11:25am Art Room Ms Kim Rheuben FREEWednesday 1:30pm - 1:55pmThursday 11:00am - 11:25amStudents are able to bring their lunch and indulge their love of art with special projects, drawing and making, catch up work missed in class, and extension activities. Students are encouraged to relax in this non-competitive environment whilst engaging in creative activities and mixing with students from other classes. (Places are limited to 10, on a first-come basis).

CHILLOUT CLUB Tuesday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Room 5 Learning Enrichment Staff FREE Friday 1:30pm - 1:55pm The Chillout Club operates two days a week. The club offers a variety of activities, such as colouring and drawing, board games, Lego, reading / comic strips and meditation. The emphasis is on relaxing, developing social skills and self-confidence and having fun! Open to students in Prep to Year 6.

SENIOR CRAFT CLUBTuesday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Library Mrs Kerrie Payne FREENot to be left out, seniors are welcome to come to the library for the ever popular soap carving and special event crafts such as making paper flowers for Mother’s Day, weaving, felt pocket pets, sock monkeys, decorations and origami. Suitable for students in Years 3 to 6.

CHAPEL CRAFTTuesday 2:00pm - 3:15pm Chapel Reverend Elizabeth FREE and Ms Kim RheubenStudents will work with Reverend Elizabeth and members of the Anglicare group to create Comfort Rugs or other craft pieces for hospitals and aged care facilities. Only available to Years 5 and 6 students.

JUNIOR ROUND SQUARE COMMITTEETuesday 2:00pm - 3:15pm Room 19 Miss Karen Wellard and FREE Mrs Evelyn Mahony Student representatives from Years 4 to 6 work together each week to coordinate and facilitate activities aligned with the Round Square IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. These activities include raising awareness about current issues, supporting local and global charities and causes and developing skills in democratic leadership.

FOOTBALL ( SOCCER ) TRAININGTuesday 3:30pm - 4:30pm Oval Mr Jamie Gosling $300 U6-U11 $350 U12The focus of the TAS Football Club training on skill progression, and students learning to grow their soccer skills. Jamie Gosling Football Academy will now be assisting in the running of these sessions. TAS Football Club enters the weekend Cairns Football Club competition every year at Endeavour Park on Saturday mornings. Registratin is through Parent Lounge.

TENNIS HOT SHOTS Wednesday 7:30am - 8:30am Hard Court Mr Fred Lay $95 / 9 weeksAward winning Queensland Tennis Coach Fred Lay offers the Tennis Hotshots program for TAS Kewarra Beach students from Prep to Year 3. The Tennis Hotshots program takes place on the Hard Court and is a modified program for younger students.

ECO-CLUB Wednesday 11:00am - 11:25am Frog Pond Ms Dianne Daniels FREEThe Eco-Club focuses on promoting environmental awareness and education through practical hands-on activities for students in Years 3 and 4. Programs include identification of native flora and fauna, seed collecting and propagation, and promotion of recycling and composting activities. Students learn to look after their environment and are passionate about communicating their progress and achievements to the school and wider community.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGEWednesday 11:00am - 11:25am Room 8 Ruby Colbridge FREE Mrs Julie Anderssen Why is recycling important? Three words: environment, economy and community. Awareness and education play a significant role in recycling, and students in this club learn more about the importance of developing a habit of recycling. We want to encourage students to be Waste Warriors and become conscious recyclers throughout their lives. At the same time, we can earn some money for our school!

MOVIE CLUB Wednesday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Library Mrs Kerrie Payne FREEDuring the second lunch break on Wednesdays, students are welcome to come, chill out and watch a movie in the library whilst eating their lunch. (Numbers are limited).

ORIGAMI CLUB Wednesday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Room 6 Mrs Chie Dawson FREEThe art of origami began in Japan after monks brought paper from China in the sixth century. Today, origami is popular in Japan and throughout the world as a recreational activity. Sensei Dawson will teach origami to students Prep to Year 6 each week in the Japanese Room. (Numbers are limited to 20 students so staff can deliver personalised learning.)

DRAWINGWednesday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Room 2 Mrs Amanda Lade FREEThese sessions are offered to students in Prep to Year 2. They will focus on the beauty of our tropical surroundings and the vast array of wildlife that exists within our Far North Queensland environment. Students will be given tips to improve their technical expertise with pencil as a medium and will explore the basic elements of art – line, shape, space and colour

KBJ BIKE BUS Wednesdays Mrs Joylene McShane FREE

The benefits of bike riding for children and adults are well known, from mental and physical health; improving navigational skills, brain power and spatial awareness to saving time sitting in traffic and being kind to the planet. With the increasing number of bike paths springing up along our roads and byways, what’s not to love about this sport and to help promote this form of travel to and from school. The KBJ Bike Bus will commence at Biked ‘n’ Beach, Palm Cove at 7:30am each Wednesday morning (weather permitting). Student who do have a bike are able to loan one free of charge for the day. They will then travel along the cycle path to school. Students will return in the afternoon, meeting in Mulligan Mall and leaving KBJ at 3:30pm. Riders must be able to ride the entire route independently on a bicycle. Mrs McShane will be our school riders but some parents will be required to ride with our team to help with supervision. Please register your interest at Reception.

LEGO CLUBWednesday 1:30pm - 1:55pm Room 4 Mrs Joylene McShane FREEFor students Prep to Year 3. This club offers an opportunity for students’ imaginations to run wild. Students can play freely or build from one of our structured activity cards. Lego supplied.

DRAMA CLUB Wednesday 3:30pm - 4:30pm Chapel Ms Maggie Shepherd $80 per termThe Drama Club is for any student interested in developing their creative thinking and communication skills. Drama will improve student’s self-confidence, self-expression and speech; and will enable each student to learn the benefits of working co-operatively in a group. Suitable for students in Years 3 to 6.

KBJ ORCHESTRA Thursday 1:25pm - 1:55pm Room 9 Ms Leesa Cook FREEAny students playing musical instruments are welcome to join. The Orchestra learns various pieces, which are then performed at school concerts and events. It is a great group activity, which give students extra music tuition, experience with playing in a group and performance opportunities.

FRENCH CLUB Thursday 3:30pm - 4:30pm Room 13 Ms Agnes Damay $40 per termBonjour! The French Club is designed for students from Prep to Year 6, to help them become more familiar with the French language and culture while having fun. Children learn through a selection of games, drama, songs, quizzes and craft in a relaxed atmosphere. The content is organised in essential themes, so students can more easily memorise the basics of the French language. Come and have fun with us! A bientôt.

PIZZICATO - STRING ENSEMBLEFriday 8:00am - 8:35am Room 7 Mr Owen Clarke FREEIntroducing Pizzicato! The inaugural TAS KBJ String Ensemble is for violin, viola, cello and double bass students in Years 3 to 5 who have been learning their instrument for a minimum of 6 months. Pizzicato will cater for beginning to advanced string players, and the ensemble will have a variety of public performance opportunities throughout the year. Students are required to bring their instrument and a pencil to rehearsals, which occur at 8.00am each Friday morning in the Music Room.

KBJ FLUTE CHOIRFriday 1:35pm - 2:00pm Room 9 Ms Leesa Cook FREEOur visiting woodwind specialist Ms Leesa Cooke will be running a trial flute choir during second break on Friday’s in the music classroom. All flute students at any level are encouraged to come and try it out.

BUG CLUBFriday 1:30pm - 2:00pm Library Raphael Springell FREEThis club is dedicated to raising awareness about all the smaller bugs and animals around our campus. Raphael will give presentations and well as demonstrations about life cycles of bugs, their habitats and other details. Students in this club will also go on guided nature walks to spot the bugs!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AND SINGING OPPORTUNITIES

Music Teachers attend in school hours to tutor the students. Application forms for instrumental lessons can be obtained at Reception. The Music tutor arranges suitable times for students to attend lessons. Students are able to perform twice a year at the Kewarra Beach Junior Music Recital in he Tung-Yep Library in front of teachers, students and parents. All students playing instruments or singing are encouraged to perform at this recital. Music Exams are also offered through the music tutors.

Students in Years 2 to 6 can register for instrumental music and singing opportunities.
