Hello, my name is Todd Kearns and I am the REAL Activities Director.

REAL stands for Recreation, Enrichment And Learning, and it is more than just a basic after-school activities program for the kids.

Every term we offer over 100 courses for students and adults.

We offer classes primarily in two terms per year; September-December and January-May. We also are the proponents for the FIS Summer Camps. And, we offer additional sport camps, ski trips and recreational opportunities throughout the year. Visit the REAL page under the Student Life tab of the FIS web page often to see what we might be offering next.

This brochure is designed to give you an idea of the types of courses that we offer. Courses and prices vary term-to-term based on availability.

Additionally, if you are passionate about an activity personally and wish to offer a class through the REAL program, we are always looking for new and exciting things to offer and would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about it.

Arts, Crafts and Paints

Oberursel n Grade 2-5 Create art objects on fabric, pots and papers using shells, ribbons, feathers, colored sand, stones and paints.

Chess Wiesbaden n Grade 2-5 The Junior Chess Club provides instruction for girls and boys at the beginner and intermediate level. We will look at different strategies to improve your game.

Circus Workshop Wiesbaden n Grade 3-6 Would you like to explore various circus acts such as juggling, acrobatics, tight-rope walking, globe walking and balancing? We will focus on having fun while trying out new things as well as developing a small show together. Responsibility, self-confidence, critical awareness and cooperation are being developed during training and preparation for the show. A circus is multifaced, so everyone can find their part in the show.

Clay Club Wiesbaden n Grade 2-5 Do you like to work with Clay, but have no space or materials to experiment with them at home? Would you like to learn more about small tricks and secrets that might help you to create beautiful clay objects? Maybe you simply would like to use your imagination to create sculptures? Then this course is the right one for you. We will meet in the Art room every Monday after school and explore this fantastic art material. Just think of items you could make from clay:animals, dishes,tiles,houses,to name just a few. The objects will be fired and glazed before you bring them home. I am looking forward seeing you there. (Material cost of €10 please pay in class)

Let’s Work and Play with Clay

Oberursel n Grade 1 Children will explore clay through patterns and textures, using their hands and simple objects. By making little projects, children will be introduced to different techniques for shaping the clay: Pinching - Coiling - Modeling. The clay work will be painted or glazed and fired in the kiln, ready to take home and enjoy. Cost of materials is included in course fee.

Cooking Wiesbaden n Grade 2-5 Come and join in the fun of cooking! We will learn new dish from a different country or culture every week and build a binder full of your favorite recipies. And of course, the best part is at the end of the session;when you get to taste your delicious dishes! supply cost of €25 please pay in class

Recycling Trash to Treasure

Wiesbaden n Grade 2-6 Let’s think green and be creative with it! In this course we will recycle “trash” and turn it into little treasures. Would you like to know how to make a robot out of an old milk carton, or turn a cereal box into a guitar? How about a board game made out of trash that teaches us how to protect endangered species and plants? This activity is great for understanding the world in which we live, how things are made, environmental awareness, art/design, making, manual dexterity, engineering, etc. There are no boundaries to what your mind can create out of the things that people throw away every day. Come and find out how creative we can be.

Creative Sewing Oberursel n Grade 8 - Adult Basic to advanced sewing. Learn to sew bags, containers, clothes, sculpture, stuffed animals and more- based on your choosing.

Claymotion Wiesbaden n Grade 1-6 Stop-motion animation, or Claymation, is the animation technique seen in such films as Wallace and Gromit and Coraline. During this class the students will explore this technique and get to make short films using stop motion. All ability levels are welcome! Supply cost €4 please pay in class

Forest Walks and Creative Arts

Oberursel n Primary - Grade 1

The forest is a fun place to explore! Get ready to walk, run and play! We get to waddle in mud puddles or how about sledding in Winter? Have your outdoor gear ready and come join us! If the weather is disagreeable, we will stay inside and use our imagination and create.

Gift Club Oberursel n Grade 2-5 Join this club and learn to make different types of gifts and decorative pieces using clay pots, shells, jewels, ribbon flowers, baskets, cards, wired tree, stuffed toys and many more.

The Knitting Club Oberursel n Grade 7 - Adult Why not add new strings to your bow and try out crochet and/or knitting? These skills will accompany you through life, keep you clothed and warm, and provide a good occasion to socialize with members of the FIS Community! Start getting ready for Christmas and make some hand-made presents! It is not perfection that this workshop is after, but trying out how, with a variation of simple techniques, you can make your own headbands, scarves or handbags. If you can knit or crochet already, why not try gloves, hats and socks? Basic materials are included in course fee.

Patchwork and Quilting

Oberursel n Grade 9 - Adult Have you ever admired or owned a quilt and thought: ‘I wish I could do that’ ? Or have you tried but shied away from too complicated looking blocks or incomprehensible quilt patterns? Here’s your chance! Come and join us and make your very own quilt from start to finish. We will learn how to successfully sew various block designs, assemble and bind a quilt, discover many tips and tricks and feel comfortable about the tools of the trade. And since you pick your own fabrics the result is guaranteed to reflect your personal taste. This class will give you room for creativity and individual decisions along the way. Previous sewing experience is not mandatory. If you want you may bring your own sewing machine. Basic materials and an extensive reference manual are included in the course fee. The fabrics will be chosen and brought into class by yourself. Sketchbook Club Oberursel n Grade 6-9 The Sketchbook Club is a club for students who love to draw! Students will sketch objects and scenes around the school. Club members will experiment with different drawing media. Join this club and learn to be an artist or have fun trying.

Young Chefs Tuesday, Wednesday

Oberursel n Grade 2-5 Take an opportunity to learn to cook in an enjoyable way. The recipes are lots of fun to make, and you get to eat everything you make! A wonderful way to end the day. Cost of ingredients is included in course fee.

Kids Club Monday thru Friday

Oberursel n First Steps - Grade 5

Kids’ Club is an After School Activities Program offering childcare for students First Steps to Grade 5. This is your “summer camp” for after school on days when additional care is needed. Our qualified staff will plan activities that vary from day to day and include: arts and crafts, board games, reading, homework time and playground games.

Kids’ Club is an ideal choice for students who must stay at school before or after another REAL After School Activity. In this case, parents are required to sign-up for this service in order to ensure their child is properly supervised. There are a number of options for sign-up; students can register for: one day per week, two days per week, up to all five days!

Additionally, a drop-in service is available if you need to “extend the day” on some occasions only. In this situation, parents need to call or send an email to the Activities Director by 11:00 indicating that the student will be attending Kids’ Club on that specific day. The fee for Kid’s Club is charged on a €7/hour basis, and is billed at the end of the Term. The fee stated above is the cost for a kid attending a single daily session through-out the term.”

Classical Ballet Oberursel n Pre-Primary - Primaryn Grade 1

Our Classical Ballet courses support the child’s creativity and natural desire to dance as well as introducing basic dance forms and the concept of rhythm. The children learn a program of playful dance that is designed to improve their coordination, balance, and flexibility. The class also helps to develop the child’s imagination, creative expression, and self-awareness as well as introduce the concept of teamwork. Children learn self-discipline and a sense of appreciation for clean and precise movement. The goal is for them to learn the joy of artistic expression through dance. Participants must wear a leotard (white or pink), pink ballet slippers, and white socks/ tights. Participants of the Intermediate/Advanced Class must wear a black leotard, pink ballet slippers and white tights. All gear can be ordered through Ms. Meierhöfer.

Ballroom Dancing - Beginners- Advanced

Oberursel n Adult Why dance? We dance at parties, discos, weddings and proms. Knowing how to dance comes along with lifelong enjoyment and a great chance to meet new and interesting people. Tina Müller, a professional dance instructor with 20 years of experience, brings her students to the centre of attention, allowing for flexibility and fun. Couples registrations encouraged but not required. This class is for beginners and those who want to refresh their knowledge.

Guitar with Mr. Kelly - Beginners

Oberursel n Grade 4-6 The beginner guitar course seeks to give new students a basic introduction to guitar playing. We start with some simple melodies and concentrate on learning songs in a group environment.

The Intermediate A class is aimed at facilitating last year’s beginner group or students with one year experience in playing guitar. The Intermediate B class is aimed at students who have been playing for two years or were in the Intermediate A guitar group last year. The Intermediate C class is aimed for students who have been playing three years or were in the Intermediate B guitar group last year. All courses are one year in length. Parents who don’t have guitars for their children may contact Mr. Kelly (069-624608) for advice. Price reduced for those joining Term 2 only.

Guitar with Mr. Theissmann

Oberursel n Grade 4-6 In this guitar course, the children will learn the basic guitar skills and the solid techniques that will enable them to play any style of music. Also we will have a lot of fun playing together, doing rhythmic games, performing chords, and thus playfully achieving the very fundamentals of music. Fine melodies, first chords and beautiful pieces of music included. Lothar Theissmann is a renowned performing artist as well as an experienced guitar teacher. Guitar with Mr. Theissmann: Play Together

Oberursel n Grade 7-12 This is a course for everyone of you playing guitar - from pupils having basic skills to real advanced players - that wish to play together . We will learn some fine, timeless pieces of music , of different styles, experience the power of rhythm, and, on the way, take our first steps - or get better - in improvising. At the end of the term, we will perform together on our student concert! Requirements are the mastering of single notes in the First Position as well as simple chord changes. Acoustic Guitars only, Nylon String Guitars recommended.

Guitar Wiesbaden n Grade 2-6 Join our Guitar ensemble for beginner and intermediate players at lunchtime. We will continue to learn to read music and learn new skills.

Theater Dance Musical Workshop

Wiesbaden n Grade 1-6 Have you ever wanted to play a prince, princes, king or queen? Do the singing seven dwarfs or magical fairies tickle your fancy? Our workshop is the right place to try our different roles from different fairy tales. We do warm up games, movement activities, theater games to prepare our actors for the stage.

French Culture Club Wiesbaden n Adult Bonjour! Would you like to learn more French? Come and join us to discover French traditions, play games and read children books.

French Conversation for Adults

Oberursel n Adult Bonjour, if you want to practice, improve your french, learn more about the culture, the way of life these sessions are for you. We will read newspaper articles and magazines. I will introduce some everyday situations, so you can practice the vocabulary ,the grammar and you can create sentences of your own. When needed, I will ask the participants to buy the magazines needed during the sessions. A bientôt.

French for Native Speakers - Monday

Oberursel n Grades 2-5 Pour les enfants qui savent parler français, je propose de leur faire apprendre la lecture et l’écriture. Pour cela nous travaillerons avec la méthode “Ratus et ses amis” méthode de lecture niveau CP et 2 cahiers d’expression que les parents devront acquérir.Cette méthode fait appel à l’imaginaire: les aventures de Ratus , l’affreux rat vert passionnent les enfants. Je ferai une découverte de la poésie et du théatre. A bientôt.

German Culture Club

Wiesbaden n Grade 1-4 Are you curious about some strange German traditions? Join our “German Culture Club” and you will learn more about them. We will do some seasonal creative craft work, some cooking and baking. We will also play games and read typical “deutsche Kinderbücher”.

Arts and Crafts in German

Oberursel n Grade 3-4 Come and have fun creating works of art after school. We will experiment with many different styles and mediums, creating a range of projects from pop-up cards & puppets to watercolor pictures and masks. We will also learn basic stitches, approach the concept of making patterns and learn to follow a pattern on canvas.

German Language Classes:- Absolute Beginners- Beginners- Intermediate

Oberursel n Adult Learning the language of your host country makes living easier and more enjoyable. Some knowledge of the German language will improve the quality of life substantially: shopping, dining out, and orientation in the city. All offered levels are a combination of pronunciation, grammar and role-playing, which enhance capabilities and mode of expression. THIS IS A YEAR LONG CLASS, WHICH WILL BE HELD IN THE TAUNUS INFORMATION ZENTRUM across from the Primary school. (Prices reduced for those joining Term 2 only)

Oberursel n Grade 2 This course is for fluent and native German speakers. The price of the workbook is included in the price. Lesen, Schreiben, Verstehen und Sprechen sollen in dem Deutschaufbaukurs erarbeitet werden. Computer Coding Club

Oberursel n Grade 4-5 Students will have an opportunity to explore different coding activities. iPad apps, robots, and other software will be used, in addition to off-line activities.

Spanish as a Second Language

Oberursel n Grade 2-5 To learn basic Spanish vocabulary, and to be able to enjoy visiting any Spanish speaking country. They will learn the following: greetings, food, seasons, calendar words, animals, etc. The classes will be very vocal, the kids will be active in reciting and exploring the language. No homework is distributed.

Turkish Intermediate

Oberursel n Grade 6-12 This course is intended to provide learners of turkish language with additional opportunities to get to know main attributes of the turkish culture. It will allow learners to apply their language base in various topics to enhance the usage of terms and concepts. It is an intensive exercise to advance main four language elements of listening, speaking, reading and writing. These will naturally be integrated to a variety of audible and visual activities as part of teaching.

Turkish for Native Speakers

Oberursel n Grade 1-5 Bu kurs; Türk dili ve kültürünü, günlük yasami sinifa tasiyarak ögretmeyi hedefler. Ögrenciler, günlük yasamda ihtiyaç duyabilecekleri Türkçe kelime ve cümle kaliparini sarkilar, tekerlemeler, hikayeler, müzikli oyunlar, resimli alistirmalar vb. etkinlikler yoluyla ögrenirler. Writer’s Workshop Tuesday

Oberursel n Grade 1 Continue classroom style writing after school. We brainstorm ideas for stories and work on simple planning and editing. The children work at their own speed on individual written projects. Part of the session is set aside for sharing work with the group and reading the day’s work aloud. This is a great activity for building confidence and language skills in a relaxed, small group atmosphere.

Basketball Wiesbaden n Grade 3-6 This will be all about the fun and fundamentals of good basketball, learning about good sportsmanship, proper preparation, competition and conditioning. We will work on strong defense, drills and stragegies of winning basketball programs. Strategies include how to deney ball possession, how to box out, how to set a pick, triple threat position and much more.

Bicycle Safety Course - Session 1, 2

Oberursel n Grade 1-5 Do you know the German laws regarding Bicycles and Bicycle Safety? Did you know that 95% of all Germans in the 4th grade take a manditory Bicycle safety course? In conjunction with the Verkehrswacht we are pleased to offer a Bicycle Safety course which encompasses knowledge of the laws, practical riding training and preventative maintenance checks. This course will be offered in two separate 2x Saturday afternoon sessions. Participants and Parents take the briefing portion of the class together. Participants must provide their own Bicycle. Be prepared for a safe summer by learning how to ride safely and with confidence.

Badminton Oberursel n Grade 4-8 Come out and join Mr. Henchen for a fun-filled activity where you can develop and enhance your badminton skills.

Teen Boot Camp Oberursel n Grade 7-10 Teen Fitness Boot Camp is a high energy fun filled exercise class for Teenagers. This class strives to increase the overall health and fitness level of teenagers in a fun, safe, positive and motivating environment by utilizing obstacle courses, fitness games, partner activities, body weight exercises, resistance bands, circuits and more. Fun is not to be mistaken for a lack of hard work. I feel that fun in fitness comes from challenging oneself to improve with every challenge. To work together as a team to accomplish a common goal. This course will be offered outdoors for the entire term, and students will be expected to dress appropriately for inclement weather.”

Bowling Oberursel n Grade 2-8 Come to the Magic bowl center in Obertedten to relax after a strenuous week of schoolwork. Bus # 5 will take us to the smoke-free bowling alley where we will bowl until 16:40. Your parents will have to pick you up from Magic Bowl at 16:40 as there is no bus returning to FIS. The price includes transportation, the hire of shoes and bowling.

Chess Oberursel n Grade 2-5 The Junior Chess Club provides instruction for girls and boys at the beginner and intermediate level. We will look at different strategies to improve your game.

Functional Fitness Oberursel n Adult This class is aimed to improve strength and mobility thorough a variety of different training methods. It will focus on training the major muscle groups and will incorporate exercises to improve balance, coordination, and flexibility. It will offer a mix of cardio, body weight exercises, resistance training, and light kettle bell exercises. This class is appropriate for all ability levels as each exercise can be modified for your fitness goals.

Golf Wiesbaden n Grade 2-5 Come and learn the basics of a great game that provides life-long enjoymen. Short game, long game and putting tips are covered. This course culminates with “mini” tournament.

Gymnastics for Beginners

Oberursel n Primary - Grade 1n Grade 2-5

The Beginning Gymnastics course will energize and motivate children to challenge their body and mind by learning new exercises involving strength, balance, and flexibility. Speed, endurance, depth perception, and coordination will be developed through practicing fundamental gymnastics skills. We will use the floor, balance beam, vault and bars throughout the course and seek to appropriately challenge each child to learn fun, new skills.”

Judo Oberursel n Grade 2-12 Judo is a modern Japanese martial art and combat sport created in Japan in the late 1800’s by Dr Kano. It is based on the principle of using one’s opponent’s strength against him and adapting to changing circumstances. The primary focus of judo is throwing and groundwork. FIS classes are designed to teach both fundamental and advanced techniques in a safe learning environment. The instructor has his 2nd degree black belt (Nidan) and has taught Judo in The United States, France & Japan. Students are required to wear a Judo-Gi to lessons. The instructor can identify possible suppliers in the area and the cost is approximately €50. There will be 16 lessons taught out of the 22 available weeks; instructor will give advanced notice of schedule changes. (Price for Term 2 only joiners is 60 Euro)

Mountain Bike Challenge

Oberursel n Grade 8-10 Mountain biking is challenging, frustrating, exciting and rewarding all at the same time. If you want explore the Taunus on your mountain bike, improve your riding technique, work on your focus and perseverance, and learn more about your bike and yourself, join us for the REAL Mountain Biking course. Cyclist must provide their own bike, helmet and protective gear.

Pilates Adult Oberursel n Adult Pilates workouts focus first on developing strength through the core of the body--the back, abdomen and hips. This provides a foundation to continue working the rest of the body. The concentration is not only on strength but also flexibility and coordination. The goal of Pilates is overall body fitness, elongated supple muscles, and balance between body and mind, with all the parts of a person working as a whole. Participants need to bring their own mats. Class will not meet on 28 January and one date TBA in March.

Pilates with Swiss Ball

Oberursel n Adult Pilates is effective for building core strength, to which this class adds a focus on posture, movement quality, and movement efficiency, so that you can be stronger, more aligned, and less injury-prone. We reduce habitual but unnecessary muscle use to allow you to work with increased efficiency, better coordination, & increased energy levels, and lower risks of injury in your daily life. This is achieved by a focus on movement awareness, and through the use of dedicated pilates small equipment: large (swiss) balls, weighted balls, elastic bands, pilates circles, etc. This class is for you if you want to start pilates, if you suffer from back/shoulder/joint ache etc, peri-natally, and sports people to improve their use of their body.

Relaxed kids Wiesbaden n Grade 2-6 In a playful manner, children will learnd how important it is to learn how to relax successfully. They will learn how and when to use different relaxation methods, how to motivate themselves and how to keep calm in certain situations(e.g. before tests/exams). We will play special relaxation games, learn different moves and have a lot of fun! This short workshop is designed to make children curious of what can follow. Riding Monday,Wednesday

Wiesbaden n Grade 1-5 Interested in Horses? We are pleased to offer horseback-riding lessons at the nearby stable “Steubenhof”. You will learn all about taking care of horses, and you will have the first riding lessons at the stable and later on the nearby field.The students will be accompaniate to the stable. Sports and Fun Oberursel n Pre-Primary - Primary

Move, stretch and build an active lifestyle together by learning fitness and sports fundamentals. Have fun while exercising. Join us for a full hour of excitement in a collaborative learning environment.

Basic Self-Defense Course

Oberursel n Grade 9 - Adult Basic Self Defense -- Students will be taught simple but effective techniques for self defense. The class does not require any prior knowledge of self defense or martial arts. Attire: comfortable sports clothing … sweatpants/t-shirts/sweatshirts/sports shoes. Jean-Luc Herbeaux is a second-degree black belt in Judo who has studied and taught Judo and self-defense in France, the USA, Japan, and Germany.

Elementary School Soccer - Thursday, Friday

Oberursel n Grade 2-5 Participants will get the opportunity to build general soccer skills, ball control, passing and shooting whilst learning to play cooperatively with others.

Soccer for Primary School

Oberursel n Grade 1 Calling all football enthusiasts! Come join us for soccer fun. It’s fun to play, gain new friends and work as a team. Location varies based on weather.

Oberursel n Grade 1-9 TKD is a martial art where you learn to defend yourself and fight with different hand and foot techniques. Participants will learn kicks, blocks and punches combined with games, gymnastics moves and stretches. TKD is an overall sport that involves and strengthens the entire body and mind. It develops self-esteem and emphasizes discipline and respect. Our instructor, Mr Zabbal, is a 7th Dan black belt, international referee, and has been practicing TKD and other martial arts for more than 30 years. Students of all experience levels are welcome.”

Volleyball 101 Oberursel n Grade 6-12 This course combines volleyball skills, competition, and fun. From novice to experienced players, everyone is welcome! Working Out With Weights

InDesign Creative Suite

Oberursel n Grade 9 - Adult This course is a basic introduction to use the software. It will explain some basic principles of design and how photoshop and illustrator can be useful. The goal is to show people how to produce an ad, poster, flyer or a small booklet for printing and for publishing on the web. No art project, no photoshop or illustrator instructions other than how it can be used to enhance a photo or create a logo. People will learn how to use type and white space but the main focus is on the software itself, using the tools and features InDesign offers e.g. Styles, tables, kuler, bridge etc. A great class for people who want to further their understanding of this unique software suite

Media Production Club

Oberursel n Grade 5-12 This class is a practical class that will produce school media at live events. The students will learn to use the schools high end cameras and recording equipment and be given the responsibility to cover events such as ISST’s, performances and other live events in the school. The students will also be expected to interview players, coaches and spectators. They will be charged with producing live, delayed and recorded broadcasts and will work towards creating a weekly news program for broadcasting on the entrance and atrium TV’s. Some written journalism and still photography will be taught so that a newssheet can be produced at sporting events.

My Finance Coach Oberursel n Grade 6-8 My Finance Coach is a non-profit initiative supported by partner companies Allianz, McKinsey and KPMG (amongst others) to help improve the financial literacy of young people. The goal of My Finance Coach is to encourage pupils to engage with financial and business-related issues. With business playing a role in more and more areas of life, instruction in financial literacy is all the more important. Practical examples and interactive exercises are used to help young people learn about business and finances in a way that is relevant to their everyday lives. Topics will include the modules shopping, planning, saving, managing risk and environment and business. Pupils will get to know different types of savings/investments as well as learn about the life cycle of a mobile phone.”

Advanced Photography

Oberursel n Grade 9 - Adult andn Adult only

This class will involve learning about advanced elements of photography and look at the use of artificial lighting and balancing natural and artificial lighting. The class will also look at how to use Adobe Photoshop to enhance your photographs. One session will explore advanced portraiture and the different techniques used to light a subject. There will also be an opportunity to explore storytelling through the lens so that your images can combine together to tell their own unique story. Time-lapse and multiple imagine techniques will be studied as well so that you, your camera and your computer begin to combine together to get your final, stunning images. At the end of the class the overnight field trip will involve an extended photography session that explores night photography and how to capture sunrises and sunsets. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and we will be able to explore moonlight photography and how to turn rivers into “Silk highways”. Cost for field trip(s) not included in course fee.

Photography for Beginner/Intermediate

Mastering your camera and the digital revolution. This course is designed to give you the skills to take better images. It will begin with the basics and then move into some challenges of advanced photography. We will use digital viewing and analysis where possible and will also look at how to enhance your image. The course will include a full day field trip (on a Saturday or Sunday) so that you can put all you have learned into practice. We will cover portraiture (pets and people), sport photography and landscape photography. There will also be the opportunity for advanced students to explore more advanced skills and image manipulations. This course is designed for all ability levels but it is anticipated that all participants will have a fully manual digital camera to use and know the basics at the beginning so that they can be guided towards better images. Finally we will investigate more dynamic ways to display your work or incorporate your images into presentations. Participants are expected to supply their own removable hard drive or memory stick (8GB minimum). A Tripod is preferred but not essential. Cost for field trip(s) not included in course fee

We will explore the basics of robotics and make electronic music on a bunch of bananas.
