Cool Whisper 27-27
The flicker of an eyelid as slumber slips away. An expectant smile to greet a new day and its myriad possibilities. A fresh face, a fresh start.
This is the anticipatory spirit that surrounded us as we set out to discover and uncover this year’s color forecast. We have seen a new wind blowing away the last, lingering wisps of caution and convention from a post-recession society. Sensed an awakening that has reinvented and reinvigorated us. A forward momentum that is consciously, stridently optimistic.
This awareness defines a series of seemingly disparate trends…trends that celebrate what comes from the earth and what comes from our very human heritage. Trends that see us seeking balance and calm while at the same time peeking over the precipice into the unknown.
Of course, important and lasting trends contain threads that run through our past, as they are what bind us to the future. So take a look and take a step into the déjà new of the Pratt & Lambert® 2014 color trends.

Today there is a harmony with nature that comes from the
organic and sustainable food movement. A true balance
between farm, market and table. We see independent-minded
caretakers of the land collaborating in a new culture. There
is a yin and yang of art and earthiness in cooking. Of back
to nature and forward thinking in the organic garden.
This trend brings us rich, honest colors from whole foods,
plants and soil. Patterns that reflect nature’s way and the
farmer’s fields. Materials that blend our agrarian past with a
sustainable, responsible future. Pick your colors from a roadside
stand full of nature’s bounty to bring a wholesome,
balanced feeling to your home.

As our world continues to get smaller, multicultural
influences gain a larger place in our hearts and minds,
as well as our décor and design. The tales and
traditions of various nations and tribes blend to repeat
global themes, while the personalities of each culture
remain vibrant. Textiles and decorative items are rich
with history and a handcrafted feel. Patterns are boldly
exotic and fearlessly ethnic. And amid the chaos,
colors become our common ground. The choices
within this palette are as unique as the accents and
dialects of storytellers, but they flow with a shared rhythm
and synergy. Use them to create a one-world attitude in
your world.

The more we know, the more we want to know. We are on a constant
quest for knowledge, yearning to explore the mysteries and wonders
of the natural and imagined world. The uncharted depths of the
oceans and far reaches of space are illusory and so the more urgent.
They whisper of deep colors contrasted with bright pops of light and
energy from a higher dimension. Patterns feel fluid, yet disciplined,
by the natural perfection of science. Materials are mobile and layered,
influenced by the constant motion of the tides and solar system. Let
the colors of this trend set the course for your beautiful home.

Is it any wonder that the pendulum has swung? From the
aggressive energy that has made our world cluttered and
chaotic, back to the divine feminine and sensual soothing.
We have softened the sharp edges of our reality and
opened our eyes to simplicity, our ears to silence. We have
gone within to discover or create our own true serenity. This
trend invites us to spaces that are contemplative instead of
purposeful. It is imbued with colors that are subtle and soft
and comfortably calm…patterns and materials that are
gorgeously unrefined, and perfect in their imperfection.
Your home, too, can have a sense of grace and tranquility
when detoxified with calming colors from this trend.

new now next here’s how we think about trends
You may not be sure what to have for
dinner tonight, but we already know what
color your kitchen will be next year.
The Pratt & Lambert® color collective™
is a team of color experts that are
trend-spotters and trendsetters. They see
the shades, hues and tones of tomorrow in
everything from world news to the produce
department of their local grocery store.
Turning these observations and insights
into new palettes is a labor of love that is
part detective work, part science and part
fortune-telling.
But how do they do it? It starts with
being active, engaged and observant
in day-to-day living. Our team draws
information, inspiration and insight from
popular culture, politics, industrial design,
fashion, entertainment and more. Seeing
how people react and respond to color
in all aspects of life helps decode what
the public’s “color mood” is.
Traveling the world, the color collective tracks the newest global trends through a
variety of channels and resources, including
the industry’s top trend sites and national
and international design shows. In the
last year, they attended the International
Contemporary Furniture Fair and Boutique
Design shows in New York City as well as
Salone de Mobile in Milan, Italy; Noroo
International Color Trend Show in Seoul, S.
Korea; and Maison & Objet in Paris. In the
meantime, they also consider previous color
forecasts to note shifts and nuances, since
trends are fluid and evolutionary.
Our experts synthesize all of this input
with the discipline and imagination of
artists, finally translating and filtering it
through an understanding of the Pratt &
Lambert customer and brand. The result
is a forecast that brings the future to life
today, inviting new colors and lasting
beauty into your home.
For the Pratt & Lambert® color collective™, design expertise melds with natural curiosity and a passion for predicting what’s next.

Storybook characters aside, color
is indeed connected to moods and
emotions. Color has the power to
affect how we feel mentally and
physically. Certain colors, tones and
shades can make us feel happy
and relaxed while others can make
us feel unwelcome, even agitated.
Several ancient cultures believed
that color had healing and
restorative powers. Current thinking
holds that some colors can affect
a person’s sense of balance and
harmony. Physiologically, it is a fact
that certain colors can suppress our
appetite, affect our sleep patterns,
even impact our heart rate and
blood pressure. Powerful stuff.
No matter who you are, where or
how you live, what your physical,
mental and spiritual requirements,
your environment affects you. And
within that environment, colors are
catalysts for feelings.
Color can help us create
spaces that are soulful and
soothing (imagine a bedroom
in Blue Heaven 23-6)…welcoming
and friendly (how about a foyer in
Buttery 14-5)…dynamic and
exciting (perhaps a busy family
kitchen in Red Banner 4-11)…
P&L Color Expressions 17
When we were children, colors told us a lot. Yellow was the color of cowards, red meant angry, green equaled envy, blue was sad and mopey. But color psychology is all grown-up.

creative and wise (a study or sewing

so much more.
Combining colors can change
the mood, too. Intense red can be
mellowed with accents of pink or
yellow. Grays can be saved from
feeling stark and formal by
combining with warm neutrals.
Ethereal purples are brought down
to earth with browns and beiges.
So when choosing colors for
your home, it’s important to
consider the moods you want
to create for yourself, your family
and your guests.

Luis Caicedo: Designer&Man of the World
Luis Caicedo is an
accomplished interior designer who
focuses on beautifying and enriching
people’s lives through stimulation of
the senses and visual intrigue. As a
native of Colombia, that spirit is in his
blood. His culture is rich with diversity.
Formality and baroque influences
contrast and combine with aboriginal cultures,
modern urban enclaves butt up against some of the
wildest nature ever. The richness and bounty of his
homeland have inspired him to gather even more
inspiration from cultures around the world.
Traveling helps Luis see the world “anew.” It
always freshens his perspective, wakes in him new
ideas. And as he travels from place to place, he is
happy to see how the world is opening up to the
unique and exciting colors and color combinations
influenced by different cultures. He loves being
able to bring his always-new global perspective
into clients’ homes. Luckily for them, he assures us
“My travels are never finished.”

Q: I have an open floor plan where the kitchen and living room are one. How can I use color to divide the two spaces, but make it so they still flow together seamlessly?
@:Laura Kirar @LauraKirarUse both #colors in both #spaces but with a different ratio in each space, thus defining them as different yet connected.
Q: What color or design trends are you seeing for the coming year?
@:Michael Bagley @mfxb01#Technology. This trend allows me to discover new ways to integrate unusual concepts, materials and methods into my work.
Q: My husband and I have very different styles. He’s more “man cave” and I’m more sophisticated. How can we combine the two styles?
@:Stacy Garcia @StacyGarciaIncA lot of #man #cave elements can be incorporated in a sophisticated manner. Think wood, leather, wool and texture.
Q: What inspires you?
@:Luis Caicedo @CaicedoDesignI am stimulated by the way that different cultures around the world express and appreciate #color differently.
Q: How can you tastefully design a young girl’s or boy’s room so that they can grow into it, and not change the décor every year?
@:Michael Bagley @mfxb01#Color. Allow a transitional color to serve as the constant and use age-appropriate furnishings and accessories as variables.

“My favorite hue of yellow is the Imperial yellow from the Ancient Chinese court, which is frequently paired with other spicy colors and is used in generous quantities with black.”
“I believe that color is a great tool and is probably the thing that most affects the way we feel about the spaces we live in. I’m not afraid of color and like to use it in strong, clear doses.”
“Yellow is best suited for somebody unafraid of color. However, I think that subconsciously, we all respond well to the hopefulness of yellow.”
“The most unusual color I’ve ever tried in a design project is black. For some reason, most people in America have an aversion to ample amounts of black.”
color theory
perfect pair
In the courtyard of this California town
home, designer David Dalton echoed
the sunny palette of the interior to tie
the two spaces together. “When the
background is set in an almost black-
and-white way, color becomes more of a
feature,” he explains. Dalton admits that
the most challenging aspect of decorating
with yellow is that the golden color can be quite powerful, and
suggests letting it take center stage, supported by a cast of muted
hues. “It’s best set against neutrals or black and white,” he
adds; a lesson exhibited quite well in the terrace pictured here.
When the background is set in an almost black-and-white way, color becomes more of a feature. “

Pratt & Lambert colors played a starring role in a home once owned
by actor Charles Bronson. When designer Todd Nickey was working
with the current homeowners, he used Lambert’s Blue (25-13) on
walls and ceiling to recapture some of the original style of the home.
He accented with Off-White (32-31) and Fennel (15-22) to keep the
head-to-toe color from feeling too intense.

BARBARA KING: Clearly, love is a many-splendored thing here in the Malibu Hills. That bedroom wall rivals romantic skywriting.TODD NICKEY: We looked forever for a piece of art-work to go above the bed. I mean, we ran the gamut—from landscapes to abstractions to an old Warhol. I reached the point of, I can’t look at this bedroom anymore! I said, ‘I’m going to hire some-body to come spray-paint a word on the wall, and we’ll be off the hook for now. And someday we’ll find something, and we can just paint over it.’So it’s less about undying love and more like a tem-porary tattoo. It was supposed to be temporary, but it’s here to stay. If we do find a painting, we’ll hang one over it. Keep the love alive.I guess it’s safe to say that these lovebirds weren’t going for formulaic decorating. They’re young, extroverted, open-minded, very colorful—not your traditional Hallmark family. Nothing stodgy about their taste. They were mov-ing from a cool, modern Malibu beach house—a vertical house, with the Pacific Ocean as their front yard—to this sprawling Mediterranean-style spread, all on one level, in the mountains. And they only brought a couple of things with them. I said, ‘I don’t want to put a chandelier in the living room. That’s what someone would normally do—let’s do something more unpredictable and sculptural.’ I found this nine-foot-long Calderesque mobile in Palm Springs, and I knew right away it had to be the centerpiece of the room. When all the doors are open, when a breeze blows in and it’s moving, it’s lovely. It set the tone for the whole room. How so?The mobile is a calming element, the way it sways so gracefully. There’s a quietness to the room, with all the pale neutrals and the simplicity of the lines—an airy spaciousness. It looks spacious enough to host a debutante ball!Or to have their horses in there. It’s actually about 25 by 30 feet. Did you have to tear down any walls to create that big, open space? No, we didn’t alter the architecture. We just stripped some paint away. Everything was white—the walls, the ceiling, the marble on the fireplace surround, the antique gilded mirror that’s next to the fireplace. There was even a white piano.Oh my. Uh-huh. A white lacquered grand piano.
Did that sea of whiteness send you running straight to your color swatches?Color was sort of a stretch for us. We tend to be drawn to neutrals, or darks, with pops of color. Painting the dining room royal blue and the media room—we call it the Wii room—yellow really pushed us out of our comfort zone. Were you prepared for that? From the beginning, we knew we were dealing with clients who were very color-expressive. The dining room was the office when Charles Bronson, the original owner, lived in the house. We found a photo of the room, and it was painted this electric blue. The wife said, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be great to take it back to this color?’ We matched it pretty closely, and we used glossy white trim to keep it from being too garish. We brought the Chanel pink wool tweed in the Wii room over to the clients, thinking we could do a pillow with it, and she was like, ‘What is this fabric? I love it!’ I said, ‘Well, we can do the whole sofa in it.’ She said, ‘Yes, yes! Bright! That’s what I want!’That’s a lot of Chanel suit for a sofa to wear. What we were seeing more as an accent color, she was seeing as the primary color. So it sort of turned our design philosophy a little bit on its ear. But as I said, they’re a colorful family. From there we brought in the rich sunshine yellow for the walls, saturating the room. And we thought, pink, yel-low—what’s left? Turquoise? Purple? So we had those curtains made of corduroy. We decided that if we’re gonna go for it, let’s totally go for it.It could have gone all wrong.Horribly, horribly wrong. Which I was terrified of the whole time we were doing it. Oddly, it’s my favorite room in the house. It’s like when you’re afraid to go skydiving, and you finally do it, and you say, ‘This is amazing!’ I’m not afraid of bold color anymore. Is there a color you’ll never use?I can honestly say that there isn’t. Unless it’s—my mother did a bathroom entirely in mauve when I was in high school. The sink, the toilet, the tile. She even put in a mauve phone! I think it was the safe ‘radical’ color of the era, kind of the equivalent of an asymmetrical haircut. Yeah, okay then. I’ll never use mauve.Anything else you’ll never do?I’ll never, ever put a white lacquered piano in a house.
LEFT: The house’s original owner, the actor Charles Bronson, used the dining room as his office. It’s painted Lambert’s Blue by Pratt & Lambert, closely matching the peacock hue Bronson used. Glossy white trim breaks up the expanse of blue, keeping it from overwhelming; the white also plays up the robust architectural details of the room, adding dimension to the space. The pattern of the curtain fabric—Jane Churchill’s Rossini (now discontinued)—picks up the paint colors, along with the coppery tones of the Poul Henningsen Artichoke pendant light and the Nickey Kehoe chairs.

WHAT THESE COLORS SAY
Electric blue reveals you as a dynamic
personality. Using this vibrant
hue on both the walls and the
ceiling hints at your sometimes-
provocative nature, which keeps others
from getting too close. This allows
you to remain objective, even in
difficult situations. Kate Smith, Color Expert

tips for hiring a professional. You can’t wait to see your design and
painting project take shape! But first
you have to find the right designer or
contractor. How do you do it? Who do
you talk to? How can you be sure? Here
are some tips to get what you want at a
price you are comfortable with.
Step 1 – Finding optionsAsking friends, relatives and neighbors
is a great way to find a professional.
Consumer review websites are a great
resource, as are local realtors. For painting
contractors, ask your paint dealer for
recommendations; for designers visit
ASID.org, the website for the American
Society of Interior Designers.
Step 2 – Look at their workYou can view designers’ work on their
website or ask them to email you photos.
Look for designers whose work is similar
to what you envision. (For instance, don’t
hire someone with all modern work in their
portfolio if you prefer a traditional look.)
Step 3 – Check them outCheck references and confirm credentials.
Some states require that designers be
licensed and pass the NCIDQ (National
Council for Interior Design Qualification)
exam. Check to see that contractors are
bonded and insured.
Step 4 – Meet them in personOf course you want to meet the person or
team that will be working on your job.
Meet them on-site at your home if possible,
so they can get a feel for your project right
from the start.
Step 5 – Share your visionShare photos of room décor you like,
as well as design and color inspiration.
Discuss color choices, sheens and paint
brands. Some professionals have
preferred paint brands, but they should
use Pratt & Lambert if you specify.
Step 6 – Discuss budgetYou may have started your project with
a budget firmly in mind. If so, share
this number as early in the process as
possible. Either way, get an itemized
budget estimate before work begins.
Step 7 – Ask how they chargeDo they have an hourly rate? Or do
they charge a flat fee for the project?
Ask if they require a retainer or up-front
payment for materials.
Step 8 – Get a contract and understand itReview the contract,
and be sure you
understand and
agree with the terms.
Don’t be afraid to
ask them to adjust
something. Better to
be comfortable and in
agreement from the onset.
Step 9 – The finished projectInspect the finished project and make sure
you’re 100% satisfied. If you’ve worked
together throughout the process, it will
surely be a good experience, and you’ll
be the one recommending them to friends
and family!

A carefully chosen color. A vision of that fresh new room.
Don’t take a chance on compromising it all by not planning
your project correctly. Preparation is important. Gathering
the right tools and supplies makes the job easier and
more satisfying. And choosing the right products, primer
and sheen are essential to achieving the look you want.
Supply Checklist
Having all the supplies and tools you need before you get
started can save a lot of time and frustration.
• Painter’s tape
• Paint trays
• Drop cloths
• Rags and paper towels
• Ladder
• Spackling paste and
putty knife
• Paintable acrylic caulk
Room and Surface PrepClear the spaCe Remove pictures, draperies, curtain rods and fixtures, such as switch plates and outlet covers. Move furniture away from walls.Clean Remove any dirt, dust or grease with a mild household detergent and let dry thoroughly.repair Scrape away any peeling paint. Fill cracks and holes with spackling compound or caulk. Sand surfaces smooth.tape Mask window trim, baseboards, door frames and any other areas not to be painted.proteCt Cover the floor and furniture with drop cloths.
Painting Once the room and the surface are ready, it’s time to start seeing your vision come to life! Start right in if you’re using self-priming paint. If you’re using a primer, see label for instructions and dry time. For both paint and primer, we suggest the method below: Cut in Using a flat brush, paint a 3" border around windows and doors, at the ceiling and baseboards and in room corners.rolling Working in a 3' x 3' area, start rolling. Many people find it helpful to roll a large “W” or “Z” onto the surface and fill in around it. Finish the area by rolling horizontally across it. Move on quickly to the next section. Overlap the cut-in areas.trim Use a 1" or 2" angle brush to coat window and door frames, sashes, moldings and woodwork.
Clean UpUse soap and warm water to clean latex paint from your brushes and rollers. Oil or alkyd paints can be cleaned using turpentine or paint thinner. Use these solvents in a well-ventilated area. Follow manufacturer’s safety recommendations when using solvents. Set brushes and rollers to dry thoroughly in a position where the bristles and nap won’t be flattened. Remove masking tape between 1 and 2 hours after painting, pulling slowly away from the surface at a 45° angle. If the paint begins to lift with the tape, use a razor blade along the edge.

Paint QuantityOne gallon of paint covers approximately 400 square feet. To determine the size of your project, first determine surface area. Measure the length and height of each wall to be painted, or the length and width of the ceiling. Multiply the two numbers to determine area and add the numbers together for all the surfaces to be painted. Deduct the space covered by doors (average 21 square feet) and windows (average 15 square feet). Finally, divide the number by 400 to determine how many gallons of paint you need.
Sheen SelectionEach paint sheen has different attributes that make it ideal for different applications and rooms. Flat A soft, elegant finish that hides surface imperfections. Best for low-traffic areas. VelVet/eggshell A soft sheen that still provides good washability and stain resistance. Appropriate for most applications.
satin A very versatile finish with a subtle sheen. Durable, washable, scrubbable and stain resistant. Good for high-traffic areas. semi-gloss A higher level of shine makes this finish durable and easy to maintain. Used on trim, doors, cabinets, etc. gloss Creates a hard and shiny finish with excellent washability and scrubbability, as well as stain resistance. Ideal for trim, doors, kitchens and bathrooms.
To Prime or Not to Prime? Today, many interior paints are self-priming for convenience and performance. But with traditional paints, a primer can improve your results. Primers help ensure a smooth surface and even coverage, provide better adhesion and hide, and improve color correctness of the topcoat. Determine the size of your project in the same way as for paint. Refer to primer paint label for coverage specifics. (Pratt & Lambert offers several quality paint-with-primer products; see product chart at right.)
