Close-up of BRUCE JOHNSTON as he, and the other BEACH BOYS,appeared during this year's NME Poll Winners Concert. (insert):CARL WILSON, AL JARDINE, MIKE LOVE and DENNIS

WILSON.

BRUCE THE LONE BEACHBOY

I've little in common with the othersIT was a healthy, sun-tanned Beach Boy who popped into

the NME offices last week to chat about the single andthe group's future recording plans. Organist, vocalist, travellerand surfer extraordinaire Bruce Johnston had just flown intoLondon from Ibiza on his way back to America.

"I just decided to fly to Ibizafrom Berlin for a few days' holi-day," said Bruce settling himselfin an armchair. "We played inGermany with the Small Faces andwe had a really great time but 'believe this but I adtually do go surf -Berlin really frightened me. ing. I go swimming .and I ?travel

"I went into East Berlin and around a lot. Sometimes. travelthat's a pretty grim place but roughBeforaendflepd up chlictchto-hik.;tng.'r'ica

strangely enough away from the Bruce hadflying

ambition which hemain streets there's a real hoped to fun. He wanted to sailwarmth." out to Radio Landon.

Up and awayIt's not unusual for Bruce to get

up and go off somewhere on hisown. He is the lone Beach Boy - theone who took over when Brian Wil-son left the group. The 'only un-married Beach Boy - 'the one theothers never phone.

" The others never telephone me,"said 'Bruce. "But Then I suppose wehave very little in common. They'reall married and have their own circle

of friends and I have mine. They do'ask me round to dinner occasionallybut I seldom manage to make it."

How then does Bruce spend hisspare time at home? "You'll never

"I have great admiration forBritish commercial radio. They doa great job and they also give thepublic what it wants. They do noone any harm at all and in factthey do a lot of good."When he returns home, Bruce in-

tends first of all to celebrate at hismcIther's birthday party and then toget back on his motorcycle. "Dennisis teaching me how Ito ride it."

How much spare Time do theBeach Boys actually have, I askedhim.

"With recording and personalappearances we generally work 'atleast six months a year but it dependsreally on how long we spend cuttinga record, which varies enormously."

Before he joined the Beach Boys,

ByNORRIE DRUMMOND

Bruce worked in ahnost every aspectof the pop industry. He was in agroup with Phil 'Spector; he helpedwith Sandy Nelson's million -selling"Teen Beat"; he worked with Janand Dean and he wrote songs withDoris Day's son Terry Meleher.

What then, I enquired, had helearned from working with theBeach Boys. He looked thoughtful fora moment and then said: "The mostimportant thing, I think, is that mymusical Standards are much higher.

"The Beach Boys and in par-ticular Brian Wilson never settle foranything less than what they thinkis perfection."Now, if ever I go into record pro-

duction I would feel exactly the sameway."

Some idea of Bruce's musicaltastes and what he 'bolts for in anartist or a record is shown in hisfavourite all-time Top Ten shownhere.

TOP TEN REVEALS TASTESECRET LOVE by Doris Day: My

favourite record of all time. The beetthing I've ever heard. It has every-thing all in one.

MOOD INDIGO by Duke Ellington -the concert version: This was releasedin 1952, I think, and lasts about 15minutes. Beautiful sounds.

SEARCIIIN' by the Coasters: This wasissued in 19157 and, it was the firstactually produced record.

ONLY THE LONELY LP by FrankSinatra: This is Sinatra at his bestand on this album he is with NelsonRiddle -a great combination. Thisis the best thing they've done to-gether.

TILE LORD'S PRAYER by the BeachBoys: They recorded this before Ijoined them and they got hundredsof angry letters from people whothought It was irreverent. It certainlywasn't. Just four-part harmony With-out any accompaniment.

BOOGIE WOOGIE by 'Dizzle Gillespie:This came out in 1955, I ththnk, andI like both sides of the record. The

other side is a vocal of "SomewhereOver The Rainbow" by someone who'sname I can't remember now.

GIRL FROM IPANEMA by Stan Getzand Astrud Gilberto: I love the bossanova rhythm and this was the themefor all of them.

MOONLIGHT SERENADE by GlenMiller: Maybe I'm square but I lovethis. I loved 'everything be did - up -tempo or slow numlbers. He was thegreatest - the Beatles of the BigBands.

SUNNY AI'I'ERNOON by the Kinks:A verY good record. Just the sort ofnice, happy, tight song I like tohear played in clubs

MICHELLE by the Beatles: Just be-cause it's lovely.

As a special favour Bruce requestedone more favourite record.

"The Second Movement Rhapsody OnA Theme by Rachmaninoff." I likethe Second Movements in' most pieces. The First Movements always soundBice Finland rising against the Turks.

It's No. 1 ! Decca's fastest selling single ever ! But . .GARY BROOKER twirled his moustache

into a mandarin droop, pulled on abeautifully embroidered Chinese robe andsipped champagne from a paper cup. He lookedset for the second act of " Chu Chin Chow," infact he and the Procol Harum were preparingfor the most trying performance in their briefcareer before a star -packed audience at Lon-don's Saville Theatre.

But Gary had no apparent nerves and faced theordeal as calmly as he had taken the news that morn-ing that " A Whiter Shade Of Pale " stood at No. Iin the provisional NME Chart.

No excitementThe traditional way to celebrate such an event is awash

in flowing champagne - but only one bottle was stand-ing in the dressing room, a present from Brian Epstein.I could detect no trace of joy or excitement on Gary'sinscrutable face.

" How do I feel about it all 7 Nothing really, nodifferent from when we first entered the charts. I'mhappy, of course, everyone dreams about having a No. 1but I am not surprised.

" I mean, we've seen all the figuresand we were outselling everythingelse, so we knew it would come. But we didn't think it would be sofast.

" What's really knocked me out isthe speed with which it's gone inFrance. It's No. 1 already and hassold 14,000 copies in two weeks! That's miraculous for a single whenmoot of their releases are EP's.Great! "

I couldn't believe that he couldtake it all so coolly. In eight shortfrantic weeks the Procol Harum havebeen shot from total obscurity to thetop of the charts and have becomethe talk of the pop world.

Surely this olassic rags -to -richesstory must have drastically alteredtheir lives?

Never stopGary smiled lopsidedly. " Well

. . . we're working a lot harder, infact it never stops and there's a lotof cameras popping! "

Just to prove the fact the tinydressing room was suddenly invadedby photographers rounding upHarum members and hustling themtowards a nearby playground.

Out we all trooped, phdtographers, fans and a Jamaican park attendant

PROM JUST WANTTO EAT AND SLEEP!

demanding to know who had givenus permission to be in his park." What an incredible entourage,"Gary sighed and adopted a tired posefor the millionth time that week.

In attendance, as ever, was" creative director " Keith Reid, thewhite shade of his sensitive facelooking even paler than normal. Howwas he taking it all? He said nothing, blinked nervously through his smokeyglasses and toyed with a flower inhis hand.

Gary returned from the clutchesof the photographers and politelyasked for some food. " I keepforgetting to eat and when Iremember I don't have time any-way."

they tellJIMMY BELL

The change in his status wasalready evident. He is now widelyrecognised and signs autographs withthe courteous disinterest of an oldpro.

Externally the trappings of sumsare there-the telegrams, the fans, the back -stage groupies. How has itall affected his personal life?

" Do you want a quick run-downon tokw I spent the last week? Well

here goes-Sunday: up at 6.30-driveto Worcester-film all day till lastdrop of light fades-home 2.30;Monday: up at 7-fly to Paris-eight radio shows, twenty interviews, five photo calls. Bed 4.00. Tuesday:up at 8, more interviews, etc. andback to London at one in themorning . . ."

On he went getting up with thedawn, going to bed with the dawn!Travelling to Paris twice, Manchestertwice and all points between. Nofood, no sleep. Despite all the hardwork hasn't anything given Gary acharge, made him feel really goodabout being No. 1 so fast?

" Not really. Being asked back totop the bill at the Saville was nice.

" Oh, Yes. One thing. Jonathan(Jonathan Weston is co -manager ofProcol Harum with Denny Cordell)and I flew to Paris for what wethought was a promotional trip tofind that the record had gone fromnowhere to No. 1 - now THATreally knocked me out!"

But just as I thought the dourMr. Brooker was going to enthuseabout something he was called on-stage! Twenty minutes later he re-turned with a smile on his face!

" I was more than pleased withthat. Now I AM happy. I think thatwe went down well and the audienceappreciated us. Anyway, they seemedto like it."

Good signI commented that it was a good

sign because there were more starshaving to stand in the audience thanappear on an average edition of" Top Of The Pops! "

" Really," Gary gasped, " are yousure that's true?" I assured him itwas, as tickets could not be had forlove nor money.

" If I'd have known that I wouldhave been nervous. That makes me

feel proud and privileged espec-ially if anybody might have cometo see us. I really AM pleased."I left the Procol Harum searching

for food and sleep. I had expectedthem to be delirious with joy and Isuppose I shouldn't have beensurprised to discover that success isnot an easy thing to live with.

After all, it's taken Gary Brookerseven hard years to achieve his" instant success " and he's beingvery philosophic about it all.

" I don't think I really believe itall yet. What I want to do is getaway for a time and organise myself.Think it all out and put it in itsproper place.

" It's all very well people con-gratulating you and buying youdrinks but it doesn't really meanmuch does it? "

CILLA LATESTWORTH WAIT

*"What Good Am I?"/"Over My Head"(Parlophone).

-WELL worth waiting for! That's the verdicton this new Cilia Black single. It follows

her usual pattern of a subdued tenderly -breathed verse, followed by an explosive big -belt chorus.

The song itself, by Mort Shuman and KennyLynch, is quality material - indeed, a couple ofyears ago, I'd have classed it as uncommercial, butthese days it stands every chance of being a reallybig one.

Like most powerful ballads, it takes a littlewhile to register. And a word of praise for theshimmering, bustling orchestral accompaniment.

FLIP : After a misleading opening, this breaks intoa captivating bossa nova rhythm. Again, Cilia variesbetween the gentle and the punchy.

MUSIC EXPLOSION"Little Bit 0' Soul"/"I See The Light"

(Stateside).Am American group currently in the

charts with a !British compositionby the tarter -Lewis team. Must say

they generate a raw, earthy r -and -bsound and a sizzling solid beat. Leadsinger sounds rather like Barry Mc-Guire.

FLIP: !Mid-teMpo r -and -b, witheffective vocal by the soloist, employ-ing an exaggerated nasal drawl.

On-stage Otisf"Shake"/"634-5789" (Stax).

TWO Otis Redding specialities, but with the difference that

these " are onstage performances, waxed during his recent tour here. And, boy, what a dynamic atmos-phere! "Shake" swings like crazy, with biting brass, organ and aberserk drummer-plus Otis givingout in electrifying r -and -b style.Wonderfully exciting disc that'llleave you limp.

FLIP: The tempo's muchslower here with a steady mid -tempo plod beat and the accenton Redding's spirited singing.

CILLA BLACK with her usual a -and -r manGEORGE MARTIN who edited the finished disc

produced by colleague Ron Richards.

NANCY SINATRA listens attentively to composer!conductor JOHN BARRY during recording of her

latest single.

SINGLES reviewed by Derek Johnson

UR TOPS WILDIE* " 7 Rooms Of Gloom "I" I'll Turn To Stone " (Tamla-Motown).

GEE whiz, what a wildie from the Four Tops Faster in pace, and different in concept, fromanything they've attempted before. Starts relatively slowly, with an imploring semi -shouted

plea from Levi-then suddenly the whole thing erupts with the fury of a volcano. Storms alongat a fantastic pace, with Levi maintaining a despairing heart -cry, while the other boys chant the

main melody line on echo. It's framed in a busy Tamla

scoring, heightened by emphaticdouble-time tambourine. Thewhole effect is quite shattering !

ARETHA FRANKLIN"Respect"/"Save Me" (Atlantic).I'd love to see this disc make the

grade, but I'm not very hopeful be-cause of the strong competition that'saround just now. A big hit in theStates, it's an electrifying spine -ting-ling slice of r -and -b, with a powerfulgospel influence. Mid -tempo jerk beat, oozing with that "coloured feel"; ve-hemently sung, with chanting girls.

* TIPPED FOR CHARTSt CHART POSSIBLE

POTTED POPSDONALD PEERS: "Somewhere My

Love" (Columbia). Needless to say,Donald turns in an appealing, un-complicated treatment of this gorgeousballad. But as it's the umpteenthversion, I can't see it happening.

MITA ROSSI: "Misty Blue" (Picca-dilly). A slowly swaying romanticballad, sung with expression and con-siderable impact by this youngcharmer.

GLORIES: "I Stand Accused" (CBS).Three gals from America's deep Southwith a fervent soul -blues sparkler.Sounds like the Supremes gone gospel!

SHERWOODS: "Here's To You SirFrancis" (Major Minor). A tributeto the hero of the day, dressed upin nautical sea -shanty style.

JONATHAN WARD: "Fools Parade"(Eyemark). A medium -pacer with alyric that holds the attention. Mainlydual -tracked, with semi -martial beat.Weak on melody.

JOHN SCOTT ORCH AND CHORUS:"Stranger In The House" (HMV).Title song from the new film. Haunt-ing theme is soloed by guitar, withbackground strings and chorus takingup the lyric.

RUBY MURRAY: "I Can't Get YouOut Of My Heart" (Fontana). Ajog -trotting sweetcorn sing along, con-vincingly emoted by the Irish lass.

LUKE & BLAKE: "Big Day" (CBS).Two London lads with a self -penneditem. Bright -and -breezy, with afinger -clicking beat. Brass and tam-bourine in the backing.

JASON DEAN: "Down In The Street"(King). A thundering beat and meatysound back this newcomer. Person-ality styling of a zippy number.

PENNSYLVANIA SIXPENCE: "LoveOf The Common People" (Pye). Startsquietly and builds to a palpitatingcrescendo. Mid -tempo, with fascinat-ing Wistful words, but an unfortunatelack of melody. Like a lyric insearch of a tune!

GALLAGHER-LYLE: "Trees" (Poly-dor). Not the old parlour ballad, but a new self -penned rhythmic bal-lad. Cellos, violins and muted trum-pets support the jazz -influenced duet.

VERNON GARRETT: "Shine It On"(Stateside). A blues -shouter, withVernon applying his throaty ripetones to the compelling lyric.

CHARLES KENNEDY: "A Scrap OfPaper" (Columbia). An Irish -flavoured folk ballad telling the taleof the Easter Rebellion. Ripplingguitar, authentic quality.

PICADILLY LINE: "At The ThirdStroke" (CBS). Good idea, this-the lyric tells of a man reflecting onhis past life while he's waiting tobe connected on the phone. Verygood words and scoring (with brassand cellos), not a strong tune.

MOJO MEN: "Me About You"(Reprise). A strange mixture here-twangs, clavioline and cellos blendwith an Indian sitar sound and ashuffle surf -beat.

HARPERS BIZARRE"Come To The Sunshine"/"The Debu-

tante's Ball" {warner Bros.).I was surmised that this team's

"Feelin' Groovy" didn't make theBritish charts -it certainly deservedto. This new one isn't quite so catiChy,but the performance is equally asaccomplished.

Tinkling accompaniment, snappy beatand delightful h'armoni'es - plus a touchof vaudeville In the treatment. ''Easy -on -the' -ear.

FLIP: A charming song with a lyricthat tells a story - set to 'a modernwaltz beat.

NEW FACES"Lace Covered Window"/"The Life

That I Lead" (Pye). You're probably already familiar with

this enchanting ballad. Melodic andpretty, with a -nostalgic self -analysinglyric, it's highly sentimental. The sortof number we used to call "square,"but these days it's very commercial.

FLIP: In complete contrast, the NewFaces belt a punchy folk -beat number, with heavy drum thumps, brass andclattering piano. Bit like the Settlers.

Film title shouldsee Nancy in chart

"you Only Live Twice"/"Jackson" (Reprise).

A QUICK follow-up to the not -very -success-ful " Love Eyes." And this should fare

better, if only because it's the title track fromthe new James Bond film. As you might ex-pect, it's suitably gripping and atmospheric, with a haunting melody line typical of allJohn Barry compositions.

Set at rockaballad tempo, it has an absolutelyenveloping backing, with strings and brass allplaying flat out.

Nancy, who dual tracks some passages, is almostswamped at times - but doubtless this is intendedas a deliberate soundtrack effect. Strongly emoted.

FLIP: Composer Lee Hazlewood duets with Nancy Inthis cute country -flavoured novelty, with harmonica inthe backing. Chugging up -beat railroad rhythm.

GARY LEWIS ANDTHE PLAYBOYS

"Girls In Love"/"Let's Be More ThanFriends" (Liberty).

Surprising that, after his string ofU.S. hits, Gary Lewis still hasn't madeIt over here. I think the reason is thathis discs are too samey. He alwaysdual -tracks at the same bouncy mid -tempo pace-and this is no exception.

FLIP: The sort of song we've heard50 times over from Gary. An easy-going jog -trot beat, an average song-and, of course, a dual -tracked vocal!

ASSOCIATIONi'"Wiedy"/"Sometime" (London),Here's another top American group

that has yet to register in Britain. With sufficient exposure, they could geta touch with this, because it's one ofthe best they've made.

An irresistible driving rhythm, anabsorbing lyric.

FLIP: A lighter beat for thismedium -pacer. Soloed by the leader, ithas a thoughtful lyric but no tune youcan get your teeth Into. Typical 'B'side material.

LIONEL MORTON"What To Do With Laurie"/"I'll Just

Wait Around" (Philips). The first solo 'disc by the former

leader of the Four Pennies - and adelightful record it Is, too, even thougha trifle unoesnmercial.

A wistful balladwith a faint folksyflavour. GorgeousacCompaniznent 'em-ploys cellos, harp, flutes and casesd-ing strings.

'There's an old-world quality aboutit, and Lionel in-terprets the lyricwith restraint andtenderness. Deservesattention.

FLIP: Anotherpensive baled, with a gently flowingrhythm - swelling to a greater intensityin the crescendo. Strings -guitar -pianobacking.

SORROWS"Pink Purple Yellow And Red"/"My

Gal" (Piccadilly). From the 'title, you might expect a

touch of psycliedella - and you'd heright. There's an insistent thump heatnagging away all the 'time, with oscil-lating guitar noises. And the lyric isvery surrealistic.

FLIP: More in the basic r -and -bstyle. Fast-moving, it drives 'along likecrazy, with an enthusiastic vocal anda hypnotic fuzz -guitar !sound. Bouncy!

Presley hit maybe Billy's chart

comebackf"Loving You"/"I'll Go Along

With It" (Parlophone).DIFFICULT to assess, this! I've

always regarded "LovingYou" as one of Elvis Presley'sbest tracks, but it's impossible todraw comparisons, as this is atotally different treatment.

It has a lazy, lilting rhythm andlush strings with Billy turning ina sensitive husky -voiced treatment.

FLIP: This is the old rockingFury. Driving rhythm, with tam-bourine and chanting group.

PAUL REVERE ANDTHE RAIDERS

"Him Or Me-What's It Gonna Be?"/"Legend Of Paul Revere" (CBS).A hit U.S. group that's never made

the grade over here. And although thisis a very pleasant disc, with a snappyrhythm and toe -tapping bounce beat,I very much doubt if this will do thetrick for them.

FLIP: A folk -beat story -in -song,which tells the tale of the Americanhero from whom the singer takes hisname. Except that it's got an up-to-date lyric!

Billed as the ' Sweethearts OfSoul,' this young coloured coupleduet well together, producing big -voiced harmony that gives an extraimpetus to their tuneful singing ofsuch numbers as- Will You LoveMe Tomorrow, I Will Watch Over

You, True Love, Because Of You.They each take one solo, Peaches(Francine Day) scores with TimeAfter Time, and Herb (Fame) withWhen I Fall In Love. But they'rebetter together and were teamedwhen heard singing in the back ofa car after a date in the same showin America.Other titles: Let's Fall In Love,

Just One Look, I'm In The MoodFor Love, Close Your Eyes, WeBelong Together.

*** JOSE FELICIANO: BAGFULL OF SOUL (RCA Victor, RD7878).

A mixture of folk, rock andblues, nicely varied by this blindsinger, who puts over his words inthat rather tuneless, yet insistentstyle of Bob Dylan. I liked hisGoin' To Chicago Blues, with afast guitar work and scat indicatingthe urgency of travel, and hisimprovising during the breathlessnumber. In contrast his Work Songgets a quiet rhythm going. A goodartist with novel ideas.Other titles: If I Really Bug You,

You're 'Eakin' Hold Of Me, Help,A Woman A Lover A Friend, AHappy Guy, Masters Of War, GoOn Your Way, Spoonful, That'sThe Way It's Gonna Be, WhereI'm Gobi'.

'Blow-up' director for Beatles?and big cartoon with new songs

REPORTS circulating on the Continent suggest that plans for the Beatles' third film are now beingfinalised. Authoritative sources say the picture will begin shooting in Malaga, Spain, in September.

It is further reported that the movie will be directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, the celebrated directorresponsible for the recent award -winning film "Blow -Up." Production is expected to last six monthsalthough not necessarily all on location.

According to the Danish magazine " Sorge "-usually a reliable source -the film will be called"Shades Of A Personality." Story line of the picture is divided into four sub -sections dealing with thefour faces of a man -as a dreamer, as a human being, and as the world sees him. It is believed thatJohn Lennon will play the part of the man himself, while the three other Beatles will portray eachof the faces of his split personality. This basic idea for the next Beatles' picture was originally revealedin the NME last October, and reported at the time to have been submitted by script -writer Owen

"I don't really think we'll achieveas much success there as we havedone here," he said "We have beentold that we'll do well but I'm notsure that we will be accepted asreadily there.

"In America people are much morenarrow-minded than they are inBritain. If they do like us-great!If not-too bad! In the States thedisc -jockeys stopped playing ' HeyJoe' because people complained aboutthe lyrics."

Before he arrived in Britain Jimitravelled all over the United States."I was a drifter. Sometimes I worked, sometimes I didn't."

He feels that he could-if he wasforced to-return to that type of life."We play the type of music wewant to play. At the moment thepublic likes it - but their tasteschange. Then I would like to producesomeone else's records. But whateverhappens just happens. Who knows ?"

Many people have the impressionthat Jimi Hendrix is moody andintrovert but he is not. Certainty

JIMI HENDRIX on stage at the Saville on Sunday(where he appeared with Procol Harum) in hand -painted

jacket designed by Mick Jagger's brother Chris.compared to many other pop artisteshe is quiet but once he starts talkingabout something which interests him-mainly music obviously-he rambleson at great length.

"I know that people think I'mmoody," he admitted, "but that'sonly because I'm thinking of musicmost of the time. If I suddenly clamup it's because I've just hit on anidea."

I asked what his main ambitionin life is. "Oh," he sighed thought-fully, "that changes a hundred timesa day. I really just want to continueplaying and recording what gives mepleasure. What we play is straightfrom us. I don't ever want to haveto bow to commercialism."

THREE LENNON &McCARTNEY COMPOSITIONS

THREE entirely new forms of Britishpop music were brought together on

Sunday evening for one of the mostexciting shows to be staged at London'sSaville Theatre. Three first-rate acts-allof them attempting something new, all ofthem original and very interesting.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - raucous, earthy and brilliant ; the Procol Harum-Britain's most talked about group at themoment-and the first major appearance ofDenny Caine with his Electric String Band.

Both performances, not surprisingly, werecompletely sold out.

Hendrix-despite amplifier trouble-was asdynamic as ever.

If anything his act was better than usual. He worked harder to compensate for thehang-ups, closing with a vicious and extra-ordinary smash-up.

His opening number-a potted version of" Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts' Club Band "-

It's Beatlemania again !FltEATLEMANIA is with us

again - but this time it'staken us by surprise, judgingby the reaction to their latestalbum, " Sgt. Pepper."

Outside of the fact that every-one is claiming the LP is psyche-delic, Beatle followers are also re-iterating their belief that just whenyou think the Beatles are quiet, they come up with material settinganother new trend for a milliongroups to copy.

WMCA in New York, which hadbeen playing selected tracks fromthe album before release, went hogwild in the first two days of issue, breaking into its usual top 40 policyto play all 13 songs, with specialemphasis on "When I'm 64".

Other radio stations across thecountry are doing exactly the same, and bets are being taken as towhether a new single will be calledfrom the LP.

Even before release, "Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts' Club Band"had been certified for a Gold Discby the Record Industry Association

Mama, Papa latestTHE latest Mama and Papa

news is that Cass and herbaby, Owen Vanessa, are com-fortably at home, with Cassrecuperating and starting tovisit friends a bit and OwenVanessa growing inches andpounds daily.

Denny has been out of townmost of the time, these past fewmonths: first, a vacation in theVirgin Islands, and then, weekendsat various American resort areas.

John has been working almost fulltime on the Monterey InternationalPop Festival, along with Mamas andPapas producer, Lou Adler.

The two became interested whenfirst approached about performingseveral months ago and proceededto donate money, time, and mostimportant, influence, in order tomake the Festival the success thatit should be.

Michelle usually joins John at thePop Festival office, adding a touchof beauty and a helping hand tothe surroundings.

As the Festival crew enters "pro-duction week", the main problemon their hands (besides makingsure that everything goes right nextweekend!) is what to do with themoney that will surely be made.

The final decision will be madeby the Board of Directors, an illus-trious group of pop starn from PaulMcCartney to Donovan.

amused Paul McCartney, who was sitting inBrian Epstein's box. He continued with" Hey Joe," " Foxy Lady " " Purple Haze "and a string of other numbers before anexplosive finale.

Denny Caine, former member of the MoodyBlues, is going to be enormous-and I don'tmake predictions like that very often. Withhis electric string band, he romped casuallythrough his extremely, entertaining act.

With four students from the Royal Academyof Music on strings, Viv Prince on drums, and Binky McKenzie on bass, Denny hascome up with a winning formula.

The Procol Harum ? A good, very good.sound. The haunting piano coming through inevery number, and the very distinctive voice ofGarry Brooker.

Musically they are excellent, but their actlacked any visual appeal. But since they'vebeen together such a short thne this can easilybe forgiven.

The Chiffons, on their first British tour, werepolished and good but seemed dated.

of America.Including singles, their grand

total is now 23 and, according tothe RIAA, no other act has quali-fied for a greater number of GoldRecords.

Alt that remains now Is whenthey'll come in to accept this newestaward!

SOLO SUCCESS MADE ME

CRY FOR

JOYwrites

John WalkerI AM sure I have never been-11- more nervous than I was as Isat alone in my hotel room in Parislast Wednesday night. Imagine it-here was I, no longer a memberof a famous trio, but a solo singeron the verge of making my veryfirst stage appearance alone.

I couldn't sleep that night. I layawake the whole night knowing thatthe show the following night was themost critical point of my show -business career.

Thousands of thoughts crossed mymind, but underlying them all wasthe horrifying knowledge that theaudience might completely reject me.

Could I, I wondered, slip out ofParis on a Los Angeles -bound planeand lose myself forever ?I thought, too, of the times when

Scott, Gary and I had been nervous, but then we had each other tolean on.

There was that Sunday we madeour Palladium TV debut. We werealmost paralysed with fear, but thathad nothing on the sensations thatwent through me in Paris.

I rarely eat breakfast, but I couldn'thave managed a morsel on Thursdaymorning. I went out with somephotographers to have some picturestaken in the hope that it would relievemy anxiety, but lunch came and went,as did a rehearsal that could only bedescribed as chaotic, and still I wasscared.

JOHN WALKER with his new backing group - the TECHNIQUEincluding girl vocalists SUE and SONNY. The gills didn't join John in

time for his Paris solo debut.

Then came the show, and threeminutes before I went on stage astrange thing happened. Quitesuddenly the fear slipped away. Iknew that other people were depend-ing on that first show.

I had a group to think about, mymanagers and, most of all, the fans-especially those who had flown allthe way over from Britain for theoccasion.

" Are you ready for this, JohnWalker ? " I asked myself as I ranon stage a carefully timed 10 secondsafter my name had been announced.

The screams and the cheers of thathappy audience made for instant com-munication. From the first bars ofthe first number I knew everythingwas going to be all right.

And without describing the variousemotional stages I went throughduring the act, I can only say that

by the end of it 1 was so happy Icried the moment I made it back tomy dressing -room.

We'd done some rock 'n' roll tunesthat I liked including " Do YouWanna Dance " and " Same OldSong." A blues number called" Stormy Monday " and just one thatI used to sing as a Walker Brother-" Hold On I'm Coming."

I had a lot of help from my groupwhich, by the way, we have decidedto call the Technique. OrganistJohnny B. Great (who was with theWalkers) is with me, and he got theothers together. They are guitaristJohn McCairn (20), drummer StuartFordham (18) and bass player MartinClarke (20).

Like I said, I am happy now, butthat solo debut is an ordeal I don'tenvy Scott and Gary for having itstill to come.

TONY BROMLEYWith the release of the Beatles' new

LP, " Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts'Club Band," the letters came pour-ing in. Here are some of youropinions.

TONY LUKER (Isleworth, Middx.):The Beatles have done it again withtheir latest LP.

Over the past four years Lennon andMcCartney have developed into thegreatest song -writing team of thiscentury. Some of the tracks on theLP are pure poetry and unbelievablyadvanced in conception.

The Beatles are rare perfectionists fromtheir music right down to the bril-liant thoughtfully designed sleeve."Sgt. Pepper" is an unforgettableexperience.

VINCENT HUGHES (Llandudno): Iwould like to congratulate the Beatleson another marvellous LP, "Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts' Club Band."

; "She's Leaving Home" is one of the1 most beautiful songs I have ever

heard and "Lucy In The Sky WithDiamonds" one of the most coin-

! mercial. If they continue to bringout songs like these they will neverbe far from the chart.

JOAN PERRY (Newcastle): For yearsI have absolutely loved the songs ofLennon and MoCantney but I am

sorry to say that I find their newLP very disappointing.

It is impossible to compare songs like"And I Love Her" and "Yesterday"with the way-out nebbish on the"Sgt. Pepper" disc. These songs willbe remembered long after "Sgt.Pepper" has been forgotten.

* * *KATHLEEN BRAMLEY (Mansfield,

Notts.): I am surprised that It hasbeen decided to cut the track "RandyS" from the forthcoming MonkeesLP. It cannot be any worse than agreat many things we hear nowadaysparticularly when you consider thatthe expression "randy Scouse git" isused every week on TV.

If Micky Dolenz did not know themeaning of this phrase then no harmcan have been intended. I only hopethat they don't make the same cuton the U.S. version.

DAVID LAMBERT (Woodbridge, Suf-folk): Isn't it about time Simon andGarfunkel got the recognition theydeserve. Apart from their one hit"Homeward Bound" their records getnowhere.

Paul Simon is a very talented com-poser and his songs such as "A MostPeculiar Man" and "Kathy's Song"must be among the finest of thisdecade, yet he is only rated amongfolk fans,

I think part of the reason for theirlack of commercial success must bethat their records very rarely getspins on record programmes.

PUNCHED PICTURE

DENNY BOYCE

AFTER twenty years of band -leading I received the honour

I've been waiting for. My photographhas been punched by a member ofa well known pop group.

But the enjoyment of this magnificentdemocratic gesture was tinged withsorrow for me, by the sad news thatthe poor lad concerned had broken hisfinger in the process.

I hate to bite the hand that feedsme, but I feel that the full responsi-bility of this tragic blow to Britishmusic must rest with the Locarnomanagement, who had thoughtlesslymounted my photograph on a largewooden replica of a cup we hadrecently won for increasing business atour place of employment.

A more enterprising organisationwould have foreseen such innocentplayful activities' of these highly sensi-tive artistic guest artists.

After all, the whole nation sufferswhen a group of this calibre suffers oris put out of action, even temporarily.

However, this lack of foresight istypical of the attitude some people haveto the original behaviour of some ofour leading groups. Why should theseyoung geniuses be hemmed in byconventional restrictions.

Just because they left our dressingroom like a pig sty, there was noneed for some of the remarks madeby the people who had to clean it up.

Luckily there is a happy ending tothis near disaster, as our directors havenow decreed that in future all photo-graphs of bandleaders will be un-mounted, and a box of woolly toys willbe left in the dressing room on guestnights, in order to minimise the riskof further injury to the country'smusical talent.

Yours faithfully,Denny Boyce,

rather like a Mississippi gambler in im-maculate grey suit and waistcoat, puffedthoughtfully on his cigar. " The next step forme now is to break into fihns," he said, blow-ing out a cloud of smoke. " I've already hadabout six offers-one of them from Hollywoodto star with Steve McQueen. But until theexact contract we want comes along we'll justwait."

Engel, as he now wants to be called, was in hisdressing room at the BBC's Playhouse Theatrewaiting to do his spot on the " Joe Loss PopShow."

The voice of the compere Tony Hall suddenlycame over the speaker " .... and this week's specialguest Engelbert Humperdinck ! "

The audience burst into thunderous applause and theJoe Loss Orchestra struck up its opening theme.

Praise and adulation are things which Engel has come

NMExclusiveby NORRIE DRUMMOND

to expect wherever he goes nowadays. He recentlyplayed a ballroom date where he had the shirt rippedoff his back.

" Half of the, audience were youngsters and they allstood at the front," he said, " but behind them were a lotof much older women. Some of them fifty and over."

This, I'm sure, is one of the qualities which will keepEngel at the top for a long time. He appeals not onlyto teenage record -buyers but to older audiences as well.

He can play in clubs or ballrooms and he will prob-ably star at London's famous " Talk Of The Town "just as soon as a date can be fixed. Offers keep pouringin from continental countries and now America-where" Release Me " is at No. 4-wants him too.

" I'd like to go out to America in a few weeks' time,"he said.

" I want to see what the scene's like over there. Butwe'll probably wait and see how the next record issued

there does before we make anydefinite plans.

(These were finalised late Tuesdaynight and he flies out next Monday, returning the following Friday. Seefull details on centre pages.-EDITOR.)

Quick successEngelbert Hu'nperdinck's success

has happened so quickly and becomeso widespread that one could beforgiven for thinking that he musthave changed.

Certainly he can now afford to domost of the things he wants.

He can buy the best suits, thebest cars, the best cigars. Butapart from his Jaguar and somenew clothes for him and his familyhe has bought little else.He still lives in the same flat in

Hammersmith with his wife andchildren.

" Apart from new carpets our flatis exactly the same as it was 18months ago. Naturally we'll move toa new house sometime but just whenI don't know."

Engelbert estimates that 12-18

months ago his annual income wassomewhere in the region of £500 ayear. " We really were having arough time," he said.

" Then came the Song Contestin Knokke last year. Fortunatelywe won and with the prize moneyI raced home to pay the rent. Wewere almost on the point of beingthrown out."Then, of course, work came a lot

more frequently until now when he

is able to pick and choose the jobshe wants.

" Security is a wonderful feeling,"said Engelbert happily. " Knowingthat people want you and not havingto scrape around picking up the oddjob here and there."

Engelbert, looking bronzed after arecent holiday in Portugal-the firsthe's been able to afford for a longtime-smiled contentedly. " Yes, itreally is a great feeling."

Winwood's Trafficwon't be diverted

THERE seems to be a touch of the " Ready Steady Stops " aboutmaestro Stevie Winwood and the faceless trio-David Mason

(guitar -sitar), Chris Wood (flute) and James Capaldi (drums) whocomprise that shattering new group, the Traffic, who debut in the NMEChart this week at No. 19 with their own composition " Paper Sun."

No photographs are being made available of the group and nopersonal appearances are planned on stage or TV until September.

To throw some light on thisextraordinary situation I talked tomanager Chris Blackwell-the groupwere doing their disappearing actdown in Stevie's cottage retreat.

"It's really very simple," explainedChris in his best "keep the peace withPress" manner. "Both Stevie and Ibelieve that it is impossible to be bcith100 per cent musically creative for anew group who have to make thebusiness of clUbs and TV, radio andpersonal promotion. The group needtime to formulate their new ideas.

"There are no photographs at presentsimply because we have not had thetime for that either. There has beenno time to get the boys together withtheir clothes for a session-everythingis devoted to the music.

"I've already promised them thatthere will be only one 'drag day' aweek-Wednesday--when they will haveto go to the dentist (and presumablydo interviews, photograph sessions, etc.)and things.

" Stevie wants their public to getthe best and that means working onthe music."We have made a film to promote

KEN DODDLondon Palladium

" "RODDY'S Here Again." And he-I-, certainly is ! In a rousing,

rumbustious season at London'sPalladium, where the show is ninetyper cent Ken Dodd.

Rather like a lifesize version of thetheatre's high -rated TV show, but Inthe most spectacular colour, It war-rants a place on the not -to -be -missedlist on the strength of Ken's tatti-philarious appearances alone.

He seems to be constantly on stageand, at times resembling a rathernaughty schoolboy, he dominates theentire performance with his beautifullytimed humour, getting the best out Ofeven the poorer jokes.

In contrast to his first record -breakingappearance here two years ago, Ken hascut down on the songs-doing only threethis season which, on Monday's openingnight, caused more than a little disap-pointment to some of the audience.

Supporting Ken were the beautifulBluebell Girls, the Goofers, a musicalacrobatic trio, magician Silvan, theJuggling Peiro Brothers, and RosemarySquires, who failed to make muchimpact. JOHN WELLS.

MEL TORMETalk of the Town

CRISP, crackling, sharp, superb, swinging, casual, brilliant, com-

pletely at ease, masterly, humorous,likeable-I could run out of superla-tives for Mel Torme, who opened aseason in cabaret at London's TalkOf The Town on Monday.

The man is an incredible vocalmusician, flicking from one song toanother and back again with about asmuch effort as taking a breath. He'smodest, too ("I know I'm going welltonight because I've got a lot of myfriends here. Wait till tomorrow. That'sthe real test").

One often tends to think of slick, superbly professional American perform-ers as too arty -smarty for their owngood; but not Torme. He hipped hisway through some highly individualtreatments of "Who Can I Turn To" ;his NME Chart hit "I'm Comin'Home"

'

the thankfully inevitable"Mountain Greenery" and "FoggyDay"; plus "Hey Look Me Over" andother goodies. I defy any non -believersto see him without being converted. Ifyou can manage to get a seat, this isdefinitely a show not to be missed.
