Exposure

Exposure =

• Controlling the amount of light

hitting the film or digital sensor

• Getting the “right” amount of light for

the scene at hand

Page 3: Exposure. Exposure = Controlling the amount of light hitting the film or digital sensor Getting the “right” amount of light for the scene at hand

• Shutter speed

Exposure = The amount of light hitting the film or digital sensor is controlled by:

• Aperture

• Your camera‘s light meter decides what settings to use, e.g.

1/250 sec @ f 8OR1/60 sec @ f 4OR1/125 sec @ f 11etc….

…depending on the scene – how bright it is, how much white or black is in the overall composition, how sunny or cloudy, etc.

Each scene and each time of day will require a new exposure setting because the lighting conditions will be slightly different

Page 8: Exposure. Exposure = Controlling the amount of light hitting the film or digital sensor Getting the “right” amount of light for the scene at hand

Let’s say…

Your camera’s light meter says that

1/250 sec at f 8 is perfect for the scene you want to photograph…

…but you want to use f 5.6 instead…

Page 9: Exposure. Exposure = Controlling the amount of light hitting the film or digital sensor Getting the “right” amount of light for the scene at hand

Wait a minute….!

Why would I want to use f 5.6 instead of f 8 !!?

Okay, so back to our original question….

What if your camera said that 1/250 of a sec at f 8 would let in the perfect amount of light for the scene you want to shoot….

….and you want to use f 5.6 instead….?

What should you do?
