The Overall Structure of GenesisThe Overall Structure of Genesis

• Key Word: tdol.AT, “The generations of...”– the Heavens and the Earth (2:4 – 4:26)– Adam (5:1 – 6:8)– Noah (6:9 – 9:27)– Sons of Noah (10:1 – 11:10)– Shem (11:10-26)– Terah (11:27 – 25:11)– Ishmael (25:12-18)– Isaac (25:19 – 35:29)– Esau (36:1 – 37:1)– Jacob (37:2 – 50:14)

• Last week we finished with two (male and female) of each of the animals aboard the ark, gathered in over seven days, along with Noah and his family.

• Vv. 13 -16 affirms again each human and animal type that were aboard the ark...a roll call, if you will, before the ark begins its journey.– “Beast” is explicitly mentioned here, where it was only

implied earlier in 6:20.

• “And the Lord shut him in” implies more than just closing the door. – Yahweh was taking care to ensure that everything outside of the ark was as it should be, sealed up tight so as to be secure against the coming flood.

• “Then the flood came upon the earth – for forty days;

• and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth.

• And the water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth; – and the ark floated on the surface of the water.

• And the water prevailed more and more upon the earth, – so that all the high mountains everywhere under the

heavens were covered.

• The waters were 15 cubits (c. 23 feet) higher than the highest mountain.– Present day Mount Ararat in Turkey is about

17,000 feet high. Clearly this was no local flood!

• What was predicted earlier in 6:7 and 7:4 was now fulfilled: everything on the face of the earth in which was the breath of life was blotted out.

• Only Noah and those with him on the ark survived this global catastrophe...a remnant of hope in a devastating judgment.

• The waters prevailed, without subsiding, over the face of the earth for 150 days.– Gen 8:2 implies that the fountains of the great deep continued to

spew forth during this time..– The rains were originally predicted for 40 days and nights, but

the implication is that they lasted past this point as well.– The waters prevailed over the highest mountains for 150 days.– Noah and the others were on the ark for over a year; more on

this next week.
