In chemical, petrochemical, pro-cess, offshore industry and military installations various media are produced, processed and stored in areas where there is a potentially explosive atmosphere, which ne-cessitate explosion proof electrical heaters.
Our explosion proof heaters comply with ATEX which is an EU directive concerning electrical and mechanical equipment for applica-tion in hazardous areas.
We manufacture electric heating solutions for solids, liquids and gases complete with control and instrument panels or cabinets, such as:
- immersion heaters (liquids, gases)- immersion heater batteries (liquids, gases)- circulation heaters (liquids, gases)- gas heaters (industrial gases, such as hydrogen natural gas, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, etc.)- air heaters- ovens- miscellaneous industrial heating applications- control and instrument panels, cabinets, thermostats, electronic temperature control, thyristor and microprocessor control.
GENERALTechnological developments and safety regulations makes it almost possible to avoid the danger of explosions.
The term explosive atmosphere is defi ned as a mixture of infl am-mable solids - in the form of gases, vapour, fog or dust - with air under atmospheric conditions causing the combustion to spread to the entire unburned mixture after ignition.Atmospheric conditions are nor-mally defi ned as -20ºC to +40ºC, pressure 0.8 to 1.1 bar.
Electrical units for hazardous areas are spit up in two groups:
GROUP IGroup I consists of electrical de-vices applied in explosive atmos-pheres in areas such as gasworks and mining. Devices categorised as group I are applicable when the danger of explosion is caused by methane, coal dust or a mixture of these. In case that coal dust forms a layer on the device a maximum surface temperature of 150ºC is admissible. When the deposit of a coal dust layer is not possible a maximum surface temperature of 450ºC is allowed.
GROUP IIElectrical devices in hazardous environments (excluding group I) above ground level. For this group the admissible surface temperatures only count for executions of devices which meet the requirements of the tempera-ture classes.
ZONE CLASSIFICATIONHazardous areas include places, environments, premises and operational circumstances where explosive atmospheres can be present. To indicate the probability of explosion in the above mentioned hazardous areas, these are divided into zones; 3 zones for gases and 3 zones for dust depending on how often the danger of explosion is present.
ZONE 0 are areas where danger of explosion is always or very often present due to infl ammable solids in the form of gases, fog or vapour.
ZONE 1 are areas where danger of explosion is occasionally present under normal operating conditions due to infl ammable solids in the form of gases, fog or vapour.
ZONE 2 are areas where danger of explosion is rarely or only shortly present due to infl ammable solids in the form of gases, fog or vapour.
ZONE 20 are areas where danger of explosion is always or very often present due to infl ammable solids in the form of dust.
ZONE 21 are areas where danger of explosion is occasionally present under normal operating conditions due to infl ammable solids in the form of dust.
ZONE 22 are areas where danger of explosion is rarely or only shortly present due to infl ammable solids in the form of dust.

GAS CLASSIFICATIONGas ignition danger determines whether to use gas classifi cation A, B or C. Classifi cation B also applies to classifi cation A, and classifi cation C applies to both A and B.
TEMPERATURE CLASSESFor an optimal application of explosion proof electrical equipment a distribution in temperature classes has been developed to prevent immediate applications of the most strict safety regulations. The lowest ignition temperature of an explosive gas or vapour mixture in which electrical equipment is installed should exceed the surface temperature of the device. The highest admissible surface temperatures are applied for temperature group T1; the lowest for temperature group T6. An electrical heater which fulfi lls the requirements of temperature class T4 automatically meets the standards of T1, T2 and T3.
TEMPERATURE CLASS T1Gas or vapour mixtures with an ignition temperature >450ºC and a maximum admissible surface temperature of the electrical device of 450ºC. T1 includes e.g.: propane, carbon monoxide, ammonia, acetone, benzene, methane, hydrogen.
TEMPERATURE CLASS T2Gas or vapour mixtures with an ignition temperature >300ºC and a maximum admissible surface temperature of the electrical device of 300ºC. T2 includes e.g.: butane, butyl acetate, ethanol, iso-pentane.
TEMPERATURE CLASS T3Gas or vapour mixtures with an ignition temperature >200ºC and a maximum admissible surface temperature of the electrical device of 200ºC. T3 includes e.g.: petrol, oil derivatives, in principal petrochemical industry.
TEMPERATURE CLASS T4Gas or vapour mixtures with an ignition temperature >135ºC and a maximum admissible surface temperature of the electrical device of 135ºC.
TEMPERATURE CLASS T5Gas or vapour mixtures with an ignition temperature >100ºC and a maximum admissible surface temperature of the electrical device of 100ºC. T5 derives its practical meaning in the processing of carbon disulphide and the production of textile fi bres.
TEMPERATURE CLASS T6Gas or vapour mixtures with an ignition temperature >85ºC and a maximum admissible surface
temperature of the electrical device of 85ºC.
T6 is based only on the processing of ethylnitrite. The environmental temperature in the calculations is 40ºC. An environmental temperature which deviates from the above mentioned 40ºC is admissible. In this case the chosen temperature must be mentioned explixitly on the device.

FLAMEPROOF ENCLOSURE -d-Cenelec EN 50.018
Electrical parts which in a hazardous atmosphere can ignite an explosion should be enclosed in a junction box. The junction box has to be constructed in such a manner that it can resist the pressure built up of an explosion (dampening effect) and prevent transmission of the explosion to the environment. It is assumed that penetration of explosive gas or vapour in the closure cannot be prevented, but the explosion will then be limited to the inner part of the enclosure, i.e. limited to the ignition source itself (sparks, arcing).
INCREASED SAFETY -e-Cenelec EN 50.019
For this method of protection special measures have been taken in the construction to create the possibilities of increased safety in order to prevent high surface temperatures as well as preventing sparks and arcing in the inner and outer parts of the electrical device.
The essential difference between the enclosure -d- and -e- is that in enclosure -e- an explosion is completely excluded. The maximum surface temperature is the determining parameter.
Junction boxes, control cabinets with electrical parts under voltage have to be executed with IP54 protection. In constructions which only enclose insulated electrical parts IP44 executions are suffi cient.
Flameproof enclosures can be classifi ed as A, B or C - the safety requirements for B are more strict than A, and the same applies to C in comparison with B.
The fl ameproof junction box undergoes an overpressure test which differs in relation to type A, B or C. The aim of the test is to fi nd out if the junction box can resist the test pressure as the gas mixture cannot escape from the enclosure. Based on this, the offi cial institute determines if the fl ameproof enclosure complete with heating elements will be admitted and certifi ed.

For hazardous areas we have developed explosion proof EEx de heating equipment, designed and manufactured in accordance with EN 50.014, EN 50.018 and EN 50.019 certifi ed by the independent testing institute ISSeP. The certifi cates cover zone 1 and zone 2 for hazardous areas as well as gas groups II A, II B and II C and temperature classes T6-T1.
The fl ameproof -d- enclosures have been designed for non-safe areas to protect the environment against gas explosions caused by sparking of electrical connections of the heating elements and control devices.Several types of enclosures for immersion heaters, fl anged or screwed, have been described on pages 8-10.Each type covers a range of maximum number of installed
hairpin shaped heating elements and therefore a range of installed power.By consulting the selection tables on pages 8-10 it is easy to select the heating equipment for your specifi c application.
The terminal enclosures have a certifi ed degree of protection up to IP66. As standard the enclosure is coated with one layer of primer and one topcoat. Other coating systems on request.
The maximum temperature for the terminal enclosure during operation is 80ºC (based

EEx e II HEATING ELEMENT
A basic component within explosion proof heating equipment is the tubular heating element. The heating element consists of a nickelchrome resistance wire, centred in a metal sheath and insulated with compact magnesium oxyde. The elements are usually bent into a hairpin shape.
Standard diameters of the element: 8.5 mm, 10.2 mm, 12.7 mm and 16 mm.
Sheath material:AISI 304/316/321/310Incoloy 800/825, Inconel 600Titanium, copper
We have designed an increased safety heating element with code EEx e II according to Cenelec standard EN 50.014 and EN 50.019.This heating element forms the basic of increased safety heating equipment. Increased safety is a method of protection by which additional precautions have been taken with regards to construction (to create the possibilities of increased safety) in order to prevent high surface temperatures as well as sparks and arcing in the inner and outer parts of the electrical parts. These EEx e II elements can be built into a junction box with minimum degree of protection IP54 provided with EEx e terminals to an increased safe immersion heater.
For maximum temperature protection and controlling certifi ed fl ameproof thermostats and thermocouples or intrinsically safe performed thermocouples a junction box can be installed. All switching devices in the junction box must be fl ameproof performed. The distance between the junction box and fl ange in relation to the temperature class T6 to T1 is shown in the table on page 6.
The increased safe heater batteries can be applied in hazardous areas, zone 1 and zone 2 and installed in air duct systems and in special applications in which the fl ameproof batteries are beyond their scope. Delivery of the increased safe heating equipment includes all necessary certifi cates of the components.

EXPLOSION PROOF ELECTRIC FAN HEATERS
The liquid-fi lled heaters are ATEX approved to directive 94/9/EC and are therefore suitable for EX II 2G, EEx d IIB T3 hazardous location classifi cations. With an IP55 electrical enclosure rating the heaters are designed to provide space heating in areas where fl ammable mixtures of air and gases, vapour or mists are present.
APPLICATIONExplosion proof fan heaters provide primary or supplementary heating for comfort or frost protection. Typical applications involve oil refi neries, sewage treatment plants, petrochemical plants, oil rigs, unattended pumping stations, chemical storage and handling facilities, paint storage areas and countless other hazardous areas covered by these classifi cations.
CONSTRUCTIONExplosion proof fan heaters utilise a unique core that has been vacumised. The induced vacuum allows for an evenly spread heat discharge on the entire surface of the heat exchanger while maintaining a surface temperature that can never exceed the limits of its T class.
The heater core assembly is contained in a sturdy, epoxy-coated, 2 mm thick steel cabinet, which also carries the motor and fan assembly. Adjustable louvers allow directional control of the airfl ow. A narrow gap, two-piece fan guard is provided to shield all moving parts. All fasteners are zinc plated for corrosion protection.
MOUNTING KITSFor mounting the explosion proof fan heaters a number of mounting kits are available. Ask our technical support team for detailed information.

CONTROL CABINETSMost heating units are supplied by us together with a total control system. To ensure complete compatibility and optimal design the complete engineering and manufacturing of both heating unit and control system is preferable. The effi ciency of each heating system depends on the ability to control it accurately. Therefore, we have developed large expertise in offering the best solution for controlling each heating system application.A full range of control systems is available for hazardous areas utilising EEx d, EEx de and EEx p types of protection. The types of control for electric heating systems in hazardous areas include:
ON-OFF CONTROLFor applications where accurate control is not essential the on-off control is suitable. On-off control switches the entire heater load either on or off. The control devices can be thermostats or for slightly improved accuracy electronic controllers with a resistance thermometer PT100 or thermocouple as sensor. For loads above the switching capacity of thermostats or controller the load is switched via a contractor.
STEP CONTROLFor more accurate control than on-off and for controlling high load heating systems step controlling is advisable. The heater load is divided into a number of steps. Each step is switched by a separate contactor.
Depending on the temperature difference between set-point and process temperature the step controller selects the number of steps to be switched on.
THYRISTOR CONTROLFor high accuracy of control thyristor units are used.
PHASE ANGLE CONTROL (p)Each thyristor is triggered once in every half cycle of the AC supply conducting ceasing at the end of the half circle as the current falls to zero. In this way the supply wave form is chopped resulting in a reduction on the RMS output of the thyristor stack. Phase-Angle fi red thyristors give smooth, stepless control of the applied voltage, they are very suitable for heating elements with a large resistance difference between cold and operating temperature.
TIME BASED ZEROVOLTAGE SWITCHING (z)The thyristors are triggered at the beginning of a mains cycle and remain conductive for one or more complete cycles before being switched off for one or more cycles. This operation is continuously repeated thus limiting the average power input to the elements. Slow cycle thyristors generally have cycle times of several seconds and are not suitable for direct control of heaters with a great difference of the resistance between cold and operating temperature.
CYCLE BASE ZEROVOLTAGE SWITCHING (c)The optimum type of burst-fi red thyristors is the single-cycle burst-fi ring type where the average power input is always reached over the minimum possible number of complete cycles (i.e. 50% power = cycle »on« + 1 cycle »of«). Resistive loads controlled by fast-cycle thyristors have a unity power factor and as only full mains cycles are delivered to the load
there is no cumulative distortion of the mains supply. With heavy loads however, voltage drop may cause fl ickering lights and also affect sentive equipment.
COMBINATION OF THYRISTOR UNITSFor very large loads or when the heater represents a signifi cant proportion of the power generation capacity, the heater load is divided into a number of small units each controlled by its own thyristor. A synchronising card control ensures that each thyristor is turned on and off consecutively during the set time period. There are no peak loads generated by a simultaneous controller action and load valeys are evened out.
