EXPLORING THE HEART ANDAETHER IN ENERGY MEDICINE

    by Karl Maret, M.D., M.Eng.

    ABSTRACT

The heart is presented as the energetic center of the human subtle energy system that plays a coordinatingrole in human physiology beyond its accepted role as a cardiovascular pump. As the bodys most dynamicfield integrator of life energy, the heart plays a formative role in the creation of the new paradigm ofenergy medicine. This paper explores the role of the heart in cardiovascular functioning, healing, cognitionand subtle energy modulation. Water and blood are shown to play a central role in mediating conscious-ness and intention. A hypothesis is presented that the heart utilizes diverse subtle energy and electro-magnetic regulatory processes to coordinate complex information flows within the body and the environ-ment. A new model of a non-material higher-dimensional Planck aether developed by Klaus Volkameris presented based on research of anomalous mass determinations with subtle energy detectors. The heartbecomes a metaphor for the new synthesis between science and spirit that was the theme of the 2009

    ISSSEEM conference.

I am deeply grateful to be here with all ofyou today exploring a subject that is ofgreat personal interest. I would like todedicate this talk to the memory of my late

mother, who passed a little over a year ago.Her spirit of inquiry has guided much ofmy life.

The word sacred means to consecrate, tomake or declare holy, something worthy ofveneration. Synthesis is the combination ofdisparate elements into a whole or unity. Ibelieve that this years conference theme,Sacred Synthesis, reflects this essentialyearning at the deepest level of science,

involving both the metaphysical and thephysical sciences. Looking over what hasbeen achieved in scientific investigationduring the last 150 years, I believe we reallyneed a new model now for the nature ofsubtle energies. Eastern traditions havealways understood that these subtle energiesare the foundation out of which we arisethrough consciousness. Modern stringtheory today has up to ten (or in M-theory,eleven) dimensions to describe realitywithout any reference to past work aboutthe aether. I would like to revisit thissubject today, so the title of my talk is not

just about the heart, but also about theaether , which sc ience has somewhatneglected, eliminated or replaced with thequantum vacuum. I think that this waspotentially a mistake; at least it createdlimitations for modern science.

    We need rigorous, definable, testable experi-mental hypotheses that we can use toinvestigate these subtle realms. Rememberthat science doesnt prove any theories;

instead it continually tests hypotheses. When scientific theories become outdated,a paradigm shift occurs, as Thomas Kuhnwrote about in his book The Structure of

Scientific Revolutions(Kuhn 1962). RichardFeynman, the Nobel laureate for his theoryof quantum electrodynamics said, Scienceis the belief in the unknowingness of theexperts. Although he was a genius, he wasalso somewhat irreverent.

I intend to f i r s t look br ie f ly a t themacrocosm and then the microcosm, following the old dictum as above, sobelow. Then we will look at the heart as

it informs the water in our living bodilymatrix. Later I will present some veryprovocative research on anomalous masschanges discovered after decades of experi-mental work in Germany that have led toa new model of the aether. This is a newnon-material aether, which already concep-tually emerged from Einsteins thinkingearly last century.

First, let me introduce a more cosmic

perspective. Once we sent up the Hubblespace telescope, astrophysicists started todiscover that the universe was made up of alot more stuff they did not understand. Infact, dark matter and dark energy togetherare today considered to equal 96% of thestuff that makes up the universe. Specifically,23% of the universe supposedly is darkmatter whose nature is not well defined atall, and 73% is dark energy, which scienceknows is there but doesnt know what it is.All the remaining matter and energy that weknow something about comprises only 4%of our total reality. So there is lots of room

for new understanding when only 1/25th ofwhat we can directly quantify with ourscientific instruments can be incorporatedinto our accepted scientific theories.

Let us start with the sun. From an esotericperspective, the sun is the nearest great heartof the macrocosm. It is the origin of allour life force. Once we sent the twoPioneer spacecraft past the sun, we startedto discover an undulating heliosphericcurrent sheet, the largest structure in thesolar system, shown in Figure 1. It resultsfrom the influence of the suns rotatingmagnetic f ield on the plasma in the

interplanetary medium (called the solarwind). Figure 2 shows this spiralingpattern associated with the sun, as seen fromabove, resembling the yin yang symbol ofancient Chinese cosmology. The ancientTaoists, however, saw these matters withtheir inner sight, not with outwardlydirected scientific instruments.

Scientists have recognized that sunspotcycles are about eleven years long, as seenin Figure 3. You can think of this as aneleven-year cosmic heartbeat of increasingand decreasing magnetic activity. We are ata low point in this cycle right now, with fewvisible sunspots forming. Scientists hadpredicted that the current cycle (Cycle 24)was expected to have even greater magneticactivity than the last sun cycle that peakedin 2000. Paradoxically, the sun is at thistime (July 2009) unusually quiescent, in

fact abnormally so. It actually feels like theca lm before an approaching s torm.Something big is potentially going to shiftby 2012. It includes, of course, the ending

of the Mayan calendar as foretold by theancient Mayan cosmologists.

From a western scientific perspective, thesolar wind is an emanation from the sun thatis constantly impacting the earth (Figure 4).Scientists have recently made a veryinteresting discovery relating to the sunsmagnetic linkage to the earth. Once spacescientists sent up the European SpaceAgencys Cluster spacecraft and NASAsTHEMIS probes, they discovered theseperiodic magnetic links between the sun andthe earth called magnetic flux transferevents. A magnetic portal opens to the sunevery eight minutes. This portal is in theshape of a magnetic cylinder about the widthof the earth and, interestingly enough, it

takes eight minutes for light to travel fromthe sun to the earth. In essence, this appearsto be an eight-minute heartbeat.

The earth itself is a very complex magneticbeing, which like the heart, has a powerful fieldthat shields us from adverse solar radiation. The earths magnetic field has been weakening, which allows more solar emanations toinfluence the earth. In fact, multiple magneticpoles are now appearing south magneticpoles in the northern hemisphere and northmagnetic poles in the southern hemisphere. We are living in a time of great transition, which may involve a magnetic pole shift in thecoming years or centuries something that hasoccurred many times in the past, according togeological research.

The earths magnetic field appears to besubtly connected to our acupuncturemeridian system as well. Cyril Smith, a

British researcher formerly from SalfordUniversity, published an interesting paperwhere he showed that the heart meridian(one of the twelve mer idians) has a frequency of 7.8 Hertz or cycles per second(Smith 2004). I have plotted the frequen-cies of the acupuncture meridians found byhim using a logarithmic scale (Figure 5).What is intere stin g is that the heartmeridian frequency corresponds to theprimary Schumann resonance, which

represents a cavity resonance between theionosphere and the earth. The first peak ofthat ELF resonance spectrum is around 7.83Hertz. However, this primary resonance

frequency varies slightly every day. Thisfrequency is at the boundary between thetheta and alpha brain wave regions. The

brain also has a magnetic connection withthe earth, because the brain has magnetitecrystals inside the dura mater (the outerlayer of the brain covering), which iscapable of responding to external magneticfields (Kirschvink et al. 1992). From acertain perspective, one might say that thewhole body serves as a magnetic senseorgan, and the heart and brain are bothconnected to the earth.

Moving now from the macrocosm to themicrocosm, notice that in English the wordE-A-R-T-H has the same letters as H-E-A-R-T.Our heart serves as a metaphor of our true

humanity. In pre-Christian times, theemotional and mental character of a humanbeing was attributed to the heart. In Hebrew, the word for heart is leb. It is the center,

supplied with spiritual and mental aspects, which uses the sense organs of the eyes andthe ears to sense or notice the order of valueof things. As the famous French scientist BlaisePascal said, The heart has its reasons thatreason knows not.

Let us re-envision the heart for a moment asthat wonderful organ in our bodies that servesas the center of our energetic system. Ourunderstanding of the heart changed a lot

around 1628 when William Harvey, for thefirst time, described the pulmonary andsystemic circulations as interconnected. Hewasnt the first one who thought about thecirculatory system. In 304 BC Erasistratusdescribed the valves of the heart, and in 165AD Galen discovered that blood, not air, flows through our arteries. Pulmonary circula-tion was first described by Ibn al-Nafis in1242, and later by Servetus in 1553. Systemiccirculation was described by Csalpinus in

1593. But it was Harvey who put it alltogether. In some circles he is known as thefirst scientist who applied quantitativeapproaches to biology. Today we attributethe notion of the heart as simply a pump tohis work. I believe this is an oversimplifica-tion of the true nature of the heart.

Can a mechanical heart really replace aphysical living heart from a donor if youneed a heart transplant? In a mechanicalpump, when you increase the pressure, yougenerally get more flow. When the firstmechanical hearts were built and used in

humans, something unexpected happened. When they increased the blood pressure, theflow (specifically the cardiac output)actually went down. So it is not really true

to say the heart is a pump. This researchwith mechanical hearts was first publishedin JAMA back in 1988 (DeVries 1988).

Other interesting observations were madewhen they started transplanting hearts.Occasionally, the heart transplant recipientappeared to have unexplained memoriesassociated with the donor of the heart. Somerecipients noted behavioral changes, differenthabit patterns, or craved different foods that

were not part of their former regimen. Oneof the most dramatic examples described inThe Hearts Code (Pearsall 1998) was the storyof an eight-year-old girl who received a heartfrom a ten-year-old girl who had beenmurdered. After she recovered, the heartrecipient had dreams about the man who hadmurdered the little girl whose heart wasdonated after her murder. Ultimately, withexact descriptions including the time, place, murder weapon and clothes worn by the

murderer, the recipient girl helped the policefind and convict the man who killed the girlwhose heart she had received. Gary Schwartzand Linda Russek, who have collaborated withPearsall, also wrote about the unusual natureof the heart in their book The Living EnergyUniverse. They call this unique phenomenonsystemic memory, and develop a provocativetheory about it (Schwartz & Russek 1999).

Let us look further at some interesting factsabout the heart. Every creature on earthhas about two bill ion heartbeats in alifetime. The biggest heart on earth resides

Subtle Energies & Energy Medicine Volume 20 Number 1 Page 58

in the blue whale, with valves the size ofsaloon doors. Fish have two-chamberedhearts, while amphibians get by with three-chambered hearts. The four-chambered

heart begins to develop in reptiles, but thetwo completely separate circulations maketheir initial appearance in the crocodile.Only in birds and mammals do we alwaysfind the four-chambered heart. And whilethe heart is primarily a muscular organ, itis important to remember that three-quarters of the heart is made out of water.

From birth to adulthood, the mass of theheart increases 30- to 50-fold, mostly from

an increase in cell size. Most of your heartcells are the same heart cells that you hadwhen you were born. Heart cells regenerateat a very low rate, falling from a rate of 1percent renewal per year at age 20 to 0.4percent per year by age 75. For example,if you are fifty years old, fifty-five percentof your heart cells are still present frombirth. If you have a heart attack, the heartprincipally heals by the formation of scartissue, not by the formation of new heart

cells. This fascinating research was justpublished this year in the journal Science(Murray & Lee 2009).

Heart cel l s a lso have unique nuclei ;generally they have double the DNA ofother cells. Most of this DNA appears notto be used for replication, since heart cellshave this low reproduction rate. Thisconfronts us with a mystery as to what otherfunctions the polyploidy (extra genomes) inour cardiomyocytes (heart cells) might have.Although some Russian research suggeststhat it may be related to oxidative stress in

the heart (Anatskaia 2004), Germanresearchers such as Fritz-Albert Poppsuggest that DNA functions similarly to alaser, and plays a vital role in the biophoton

regulation inside cells. This offers us theopportunity to see the heart as intimatelyconnected with the living light communi-cation processes in our body mediated bybiophotons (Bischof 1995).

The organ of the heart is a most unusualcommunity of cells. It is called a functionalsyncytium, meaning a meshwork of musclece ll s interconnected by cont iguouscytoplasmic bridges. Thus, an electrical

excitation occurring in one cell can spreadto neighboring cells. The heart cells workin a coordinated manner, a community ofcells that are a model of collaboration. Theheart is a living symbol of our workingtogether as a heart-centered community.

The heart can be considered to be thecenter of the bodys biomagnetic and subtleenergy field. We now have high technologymagnetometers, including the supercon-

ducting quantum interference device(SQUID), which can very accuratelymeasure the hearts magnetic field. This iscalled a magnetocardiogram (MCG). Itsanalogous to an electrocardiogram, whichmeasures the electrical field signatureproduced by the heart which can bepicked up with conductive electrodesanywhere on the body. What researchersfound is that the hearts electrical field(ECG) is around sixty times stronger thanthe brains electrical field measured with anelectroencephalogram (EEG). However, thehearts magnetic field (MCG) is up to 5,000

times stronger than the brains magneticfield called the magnetoencephalogram(MEG) (McCraty 2001).

An image of the magnetic impulses associ-ated with a 61-lead prethoracic magneto-cardiogram (MCG) and the associatedmagnetic field map of the heart at the Q-wave onset are shown in Figure 6. Whatyou see here is occurring on a beat-by-beatbasis with the magnetic field signal at the

moment of ventricular contraction, forminga pattern that resembles a Chinese yin yangsymbol. Joseph Chilton Pearce, who wasa consultant for the Institute of HeartMathin Boulder Creek, California, once showeda three-dimensional image of the magneticfield vectors surrounding the heart in thechest. In this image, the heart magneticfield somewhat resembled an imperfecttoroid, or doughnut shape. An artisticrendition of an idealized set of nestedtoroidal fields has been used for illustrationpurposes by the Institute of HeartMath asshown in Figure 7. Nested toroidalstructures (Figure 8) have a complex

topological structure that can containextremely high information density. Thehearts field may play a significant role instructuring the energetic matrix of the bodywith complex information flow, which I willillustrate further in this presentation.

The hearts muscle fibers join together insheets of dynamic spiraling bands. Thereare seven different layers of heart musclecells, so that gives us again an interesting

correlation. The heart fibers in the ventriclehave a spiraling form (Figure 9), with thepapillary muscles linked to the valves beingconnected to the apex or lower pole of theheart. The Spanish anatomist FranciscoTorrent-Guasp (1931-2005) dissected theheart along the internal planes of heartfascia. This makes it apparent that the heartmuscle forms a complex topology, a kind ofknot, which unrolls to form a large contin-uous band, seen in Figure 10 (Aguilar 2005).

During embryological development, theheart comes from two different cell lines.Essentially, two different heart fields come

together. So even during its formativestages, the hearts essential nature combinestwo anatomical poles, suggesting the idea ofsynthesis at the basis of its anatomical

makeup. As the blood spirals out of theheart into the aorta, the geometry in theaortic arch literally vortexes the blood downthe aorta with every heartbeat (Figure 11).With each beat, having a stroke volume ofabout 70 ml of blood, the adult humanheart causes about 350 billion red bloodcells to move through the ventricles. Thesemassive numbers of blood corpusclestransport vital oxygen to the cells, and inall likelihood also convey tremendous

amounts of information from the heart tothe energetic body. The Anthroposophicalresearcher Craig Holdrege has collected aseries of essays that offer a new perspectiveof the heart in The Dynamic Heart and

Circulation. I would highly recommendthis book to you (Holdrege 2002).

ISSSEEM is an energy medicine society, so

the first questions to ask may be, What isenergy? and What is the energy of theheart? In physics, the metrology of energyis defined as mass times length squareddivided by time squared. Energy has thecapacity to do useful work. Energy can alsobe patterned as information. But is theheart really a pump? The resting heart onlyuses between six to ten watts of energy.Thats not much more than a night lightuses . In each minute, the heart only

consumes 25 cubic milliliters of oxygen. Asreported by Hermann Lauboeck (Holdrege2002), most of that energy is not used topropel the blood; rather the heart createstremendous heat during the isotonic heartmuscle contraction. It uses only a smallpercent of energy and oxygen to sustain itsown basal metabolic rate. The majority ofthe energy of the heart warms the blood andstreams into the bodys watery matrix asinfrared heat radiation. So the heart is

primarily an organ of warmth, as well aspressurizing the blood streaming through it.Perhaps that is why we say, I feel so warmtowards you when we express emotions oflove and compassion. The heat is generatedin the vast numbers of mitochondria thatare especially numerous in each heart cell.

The heart is also an endocrine organ. Itproduces hormones like oxytocin, which arealso produced in many parts of the body. Italso produces a hormone called atrialnatriuretic peptide (ANP), which the bodyuses to control the circulating volume of

Subtle Energies & Energy Medicine Volume 20 Number 1 Page 62

    11/44

blood. It plays an especially important rolein blood loss leading to shock. The heartalso has many neuropeptides and hormonereceptors, and responds to over 30 signaling

molecules. The complex oxytocin regulatorysystem can actually induce stem cells tobecome transformed into new heart cells.Oxytocin is sometimes called the lovehormone because it is involved in pairbonding in rodents. It induces uterinecontractions when a woman is in labor. Menproduce it after sexual intercourse, and it mayalso contribute to pair bonding if partnersstay connected through a loving relationship.Today there is much research describing this

very complex physiological regulatory systemthat affects many cells in the body.

The heart can also be thought of as a sophis-ticated neural processor. Some people havecalled it a small brain because it contains40,000 cardiac neurons. These are part ofthe intrinsic neural regulatory system of theheart. A new field called neurocardiology hasarisen from the study of this heart nervoussystem (Armour & Ardell 2004). These

neurons are in complex communication withthe brain through the autonomic nervoussystem. They play an important role in heartrate variability, which is increasingly beinginvestigated also in the field of cardiology. This morning we heard from Susanna andPuran Bair about the importance of thehearts rhythm and variability in health.

At our clinical center we use one of thesmallest heart rate variability recorders tostudy the autonomic nervous system. Thissystem, which is smaller than a matchbox,is called proQuant, and was developed in

Austria by Dr. Franz Senekowitsch. Withthis system, we can collect up to two daysof continuous heart rate variability data andplot it over time. The computer program

that evaluates the data performs a contin-uous Fourier analysis which then breaks theHRV information into dif ferent lowfrequency bands. These can then be plottedin a time plot over two days to show thedegree of stress during both sleep and wakecycles. We found that when some people goto sleep, their sympathetic nervous systemcontinues to stay activated throughout thenight. These people get limited renewalfrom their sleep and their stress pattern

contributes to long-term illness, especiallyheart disease.

Next I want to present the interesting andcomplex conduction system inside the heartcalled the Purkinje fibers (Figure 12). Thisis the rapid conduction system of thenervous impulses associated with initiatingmuscle contractions. What is fascinating is

Subtle Energies & Energy Medicine Volume 20 Number 1 Page 63

Figure 12. Purkinje fibers in conduction

    system of the heart

    12/44

that these fibers are actually muscle cells thathave transformed themselves into nerve cells. The physicist Elizabeth Rauscher, whocarried out research with her late husband

William Van Bise on this, found that theycould induce external pacing of the heartwith magnetic stimulators they invented.Their system does not require an electricalpacemaker to be located inside the heart.

The system patented by Dr. Rauscherinvolves a magnetic pulsing system locatednear the cerebellum, the back part of thebrain. Some of the longest nerve fibernetworks are located in the cerebellum.

Interestingly, these are also called nervePurkinje cells, but they are quite differentfrom the Purkinje conduction system in theheart. The cerebellar Purkinje cells have upto 200,000 parallel dendritic fibers orbranches . They a l so re lease uniquechemicals called endocannabinoids. Onemay visualize this branching network asforming part of an antenna system that mayrespond to coordinated field impulses. When you magnetically pulse this system at

a specific frequency and impulse pattern, you can actually pace the heart externally. This new experimental finding has not yetbeen widely recognized in cardiology ormade commercially available (Rauscher1988, 2009).

So, if you want to create a heart to act asa sensory organ, what would you need? Youwould need nerve f ibers that rapidlyconduct the heart signal (Purkinje fibers). You would need a nerve network inside theheart as is now being described in neurocar-diology. You would need s igna ling

pathways to the brain including myelinatedand unmyelinated fibers that go to differentcell nuclei in the brain stem. StephenPorges Ph.D. at the University of Chicago

has referred to this expanded autonomicnervous system as the polyvagal nervoussystem or the Social Engagement System(Porges 1994, 1998, 2003).

You would also need something that cangenerate coherence in the body, specifically, coherent soliton or lossless energy transfer-ence through the matrix, described byDavydov (Davydov 1986). You need theunique communication system operating

around 7.6 Hertz that Dr. Rauscher hasfound. You need to make this entirecommunication system immune fromexternal electromagnetic influences. Thiswill be described shortly when I discuss thescalar wave research of Dr. Meyl inGermany. He believes that many devicessuch as our cell phones stress the body andthe heart (Meyl 2003). There is now someevidence that this microwave radiation, andpossibly scalar waves, adversely impact heart

    development in utero.

I believe the heart acts as a coherencegenerator throughout the connective tissuematrix, creating pressure waves, soundwaves, light and infrared radiation, and acomplex topology of magnetic and electricalfields. All of these fields and waves impactthe connective tissue matrix. The heart hashigh informational and subtle energydensity that we are only beginning toinvestigate. The heart maintains thiscomplex field structure 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days year after year.

Subtle Energies & Energy Medicine Volume 20 Number 1 Page 64

    13/44

So the hypothesis is that the heart also actsas a transducer of subtle energy from thenon-material realm, from a realm that I willlater describe as the relativistic aether. The

aether concept is not really dead; rather itneeds to be seen from an expanded non-material perspective. If this can occur, theaether will give us, I think, one of ourbridges toward spirit. Before we get there, let us examine the measurable energeticheart a little further.

If we study the hearts electrical rhythm, which we use to determine the beat-to-beatvariable interval called heart rate variability,

we know that it originates from a centralpacemaker called the sinoatrial node, and isthen modified by the atrioventricular node.As I mentioned, we can pick up this ECGsignal all over the body. Traditionally, cardiologists interpret this strong electricalnervous impulse as a depolarization andrepolarization signal created by ionic flowsaccompanying muscle contraction. Somescientists believe that there is more informa-tion in that signal that the rhythm of the

heart over time has a powerful effect on ourbody and brain, while simultaneouslyreflecting our emotional state.

Roland McCraty at the Institute forHeartMath (and others) have found that ifyou perform special signal processing of theEEG from the brain, the heart signal can bedetected from the signals emanating frominsidethe brain. They have also shown thatthe hearts signal can be used to reliably antici-pate information being presented to thebrain, including images randomly selected bya computer. In other words, this work seems

to suggest that the heart appears to have someprecognitive ability and is able to sensewhether pictures randomly appearing on ascreen have a neutral or strong emotional

content. They have been deeply involved inthis type of frontier science research and Igreatly value their work (McCraty 2004).

I began to ask if there might be usefulinformation content in the time rhythm ofthe ECG signal in the context of HRV. Ifyou perform sequential Fourier spectralanalyses of the heart rate variability signal andplot it on a waterfall plot, it can create animage resembling a series of mountain peaks

over time. However, along the frequency axisyou also see a regular series of little peaks thatrepresent the frequency components withinthe ECG waveform. These frequencycomponents are present because the ECGwith i ts prominent QRS complex i sessentially an impulse function. A pureimpulse or sudden spike contains an infinitenumber of harmonics which have less and lessamplitude as the frequency increases. Thelower frequencies typically have the highest

amplitude. As you examine this plot offrequency against time (Figure 13), you cansee these different frequency components asa series of repeated bands within these peaks. So I would suggest that the heart rate signalcontains information that is more complexthan the depolarization and repolarizations ignal that i s u sua l ly ta lked about .Essentially, the heart creates very powerfulmagnetic and electrical fields containingmany different frequency components thatconstantly influence the connective tissuematrix. We know that we can pick up theraw ECG signal from within the tissues as

well as on the surface of the skin. I submitthat the hearts signal is part of a complexbody communication system that influencesmany physiological systems, including thebrain and autonomic nervous system. It isimportant to remember that these signals allflow through an aqueous medium thewater in our living matrix. I particularlylike to quote West Marrin from his excellentbook, Altered Perception, who wrote, Liquid

water is not just the solvent for earthly lifeforms; it is the actual matrix within whichall biological structures and processes exist .. . Earthly life may be seen as animatedwater . . . (Marrin 2006).

These processes that occur in our waterymatrix also involve biological quantumprocesses. Mae-Wan Ho, Rustum Roy andWilliam Tiller have all talked about theimportance of water and these processes intheir work as well as at this conference.(Tiller 1993, 1995, 1999; Ho 1994, 1998;Roy 2005). It takes place inside the cellularstructures where many interesting things

occur, especially at phase boundaries withincell components and the associatedhydration layers. Some scientists think thatthe minute microtubules play an especiallyimportant role (Hameroff 1996). The biophysicist Freeman Cope proposed inthe 1970s that physical processes in thebody operate through solid state physics. Itwas these processes that became wellunderstood in the computer and laserindustry (Cope 1973, 1975). Perhaps theearliest pioneer was Albert Szent-Gyrgyi,the mentor of Dr. James Oschman whenthey worked together at the Woods Hole

research institution. He was the first tosuggest that proteins have semiconductor-like properties (Szent-Gyrgyi 1941, 1960).

From all this foundational work one mightdevelop an image of the living matrix as acomplex mass of parallel processing quantumcomputers that work nearly at the speed oflight, processing complex, nearly lossless, information flows. The matrix has manyproperties demonstrating piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and even quantized Halleffects (Oschman 2000, 2003). There mayeven be body temperature superconductiveprocesses occurring in the body. Dr. Frank

Barr made the suggestion that melanin, thepigment in our skin that is also found in ourbrains, may act like a superconductororganizing many functions in the body (Barr1983). We also know that there are manydifferent types of communication processesoccurring in the body. These involve avariety of waveforms including solitons, phonons, longitudinal waves, biophotons, plasmons, polarons, charge density waves, and so on, that create an almost infinite

number of resonances, standing waves, spherical waves and others. The entiresymphony of life is very, very complex.

The great quantum physicist Niels Bohronce said, What we observe is not natureitself, but nature exposed to our method ofquestioning. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho echoesthese sentiments when she says, Physics iswhat we can say about nature, not hownature really is. I believe it is the quest ofthis society to f ind new ways to askquestions and to utilize the best of thebiophysical sciences in investigating the

energetic and informational realms withinour expanded being.

One place to begin is to study water from

many perspectives. Water is affected byalmost everything: physical substances, sound and electromagnetic forces, andsubtle energies, including gaining anunderstanding of how water flows in natureto regenerate and energize itself. The natureof its fluid dynamics including moving in avortex is important here. Let us begin byexamining the physical aspects of water.

    Waters electron structure is tetrahedral.

That means its like a three-sided pyramid. When water molecules organize themselvesin a fractal manner, they arrange themselvesso that four molecules of water reside at fourcorners of a tetrahedron again. When watermolecules link together through theirhydrogen bonding patterns, they are calledwater clusters. Although these clusters werefirst thought to be very transient, we nowrecognize that they can maintain a resonancestructure for a considerable time. Water is

affected and organized by whatever watertouches, flows through or is dissolved in it.

Water clusters form in various aggregates:dimers, trimers, ring structures, icosahedralstructures, and so on. Martin Chaplin atSouth Bank University in London hasdescribed these in great detail (Chaplin2007). Certain scientists are beginningbelieve that water clusters are associatedwith the mystery of how information isstructured within the water the memoryof water. These clusters form resonancestructures lasting a considerable time, even

    though individual water molecules maycome and go in a dynamic dance. RustumRoy, whose work I deeply appreciate,explains that theyre l ike a complexalphabet of resonant information storaget h a t o r g a n i z e s i t s e l f s o t h a t i t c a ncommunicate information. In this way,water molecules are analogous to the lettersof an alphabet which join together to makewords. By analogy, the clusters may further

organize themselves just as words makesentences, comprise books and createlanguage. The bio-tensegrity matrices andgeometrical structures within cells and theconnective tissue that were so beautifullyillustrated in Dr. Steve Levins talk thismorning reminded me of how water is thebasis of life and displays these same spatialarrangements.

Let us never forget that every protein in ourbody is surrounded by a matrix of watermolecules. All amino acids that make upthis protein are involved with complex

hydration patterns, with the water acting asthe mediator between all cell organelles.Science has now invented lasers, calledTerahertz Lasers, that turn on and off atrillion times per second. These new lasersare now being used to probe the hydrationpatterns of proteins as they are beingassembled, utilizing Terahertz absorptionspectroscopy. Scientists are interested inf in di ng o ut h ow f as t p ro te in s f ol d

themselves up and how water is involved inthis process. Apparently this occurs notonly through the interacting electricalcharges on the amino acids that make upthe proteins, but through the water facili-tating this process itself. Using very fastlaser light pulses, the time sequence of thisprocess can be studied (Kim et al. 2008).In Figure 14 you can see an alpha helixforming in a matter of microseconds tomill i seconds. The proteins a lso s tayorganized through the surroundinghydration matrix. In essence, water givesprotein its information.

Water is also influenced by sound and electro-magnetic forces. We use new technologies tovisualize things through ultrasound, through x-rays (which are high energy electromagnetic

waves), through thermography (which arelower energy heat waves), and throughmagnetic resonance imaging (which is radiofrequency radiation inside very powerfulmagnetic fields). All of these affect water, andwork through the watery matrix in the body.

But there is another way to look at electro-magnetic wave phenomena. That was thegenius of Nikola Tesla, who gave us ourmodern electrical power generation. Tesla

initially worked for Thomas Edison, andlater ended up in a battle with Edison aboutTeslas alternating current power transmis-sion technologies that we use today. Edisonwas a proponent of the less efficient directcurrent technology he invented. Comparedto Edison, not many people rememberTeslas contributions to our world.

Tesla talked about a different type of wavetransmission called longitudinal wave

resonance transmission. These Teslaradiations are different from the Hertzianor the transverse waves initially describedtheoretically by James Clerk Maxwell.Transverse waves were later experimentallyconfirmed by Heinrich Hertz. Today, onlytransverse waves, in which the electrical andmagnetic field vectors are at right angles toeach other as well as to the direction ofpropagation, are exclusively used to describeelectromagnetic wave transmission withoutconsidering any other possible waves.

Dr. Konstantin Meyl, a physicist and

electrical engineering professor in Germany, did some recent work with Tesla waves.Meyl bases his theoretical work on aLaplacian wave equation written in an

extended form. The terms of his equationsinclude both the accepted magnetic fieldvortices of traditional electromagnetictheory as well as a new term called thepotential vortex. He has written two booksabout this, utilizing standard electromag-netic terminology (Meyl 1990, 1992). Hehas also replicated some of Teslas experi-mental work involving these longitudinalwave phenomena. Controversially, Meylcoined the term scalar waves in describing

these types of radiations. He suggests thatbiological processes, including nerveconduction in myelinated fibers, operate byutilizing these scalar waves (Meyl 2003).

I wanted to mention this work to suggestthat there is such a thing as a longitudinalor non-Hertzian wave transmission, and thatit can be mathematically modeled. One can,in fact, transmit energy wirelessly throughthe air, as Tesla had done in early part of

20th century. This type of wireless transmis-sion is currently being investigated at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology.Meyl has replicated some of this work, anddemonstrated how Nikola Tesla could holda light bulb in his hand and allow the highfrequency field to light it up throughresonance processes. The body essentiallybecomes the resonant receiving antenna forthe radiations produced by a Tesla coiltransmitter. Tesla impressed many people inhis day who wondered how light bulbs (andfluorescent lights) could be lit without wiresbeing attached to them.

    18/44

The scalar waves that Meyl describes cantravel at various speeds of propagation. Weknow that electromagnetic waves, includinglight, travel at around 300 million meters

per second in a vacuum and slightly slowerin air. In fact, the inverse of the square rootof the product of magnetic permeability ina free space (

) and the permittivity of free

    space (

) define the speed of light (co = 1/

), as Maxwell had first suggested. This applies for all transverse electromag-netic wave propagation. But longitudinalwaves or scalar waves travel in a differentmanner and form resonances between thesender and receiver. According to Meyl,

they can propagate at slower or faster ratesthan light speed. He believes biologicalsystems use these types of waves for greaterefficiency, including the biophotons that areinvolved in steering biological processes.Meyl works with flat planar coils that werefirst developed by Tesla as a potentialsolution to transfer power using highfrequency scalar waves.

His technology has also been successfully

adapted by the German homeopath andbiochemist Dr. Karen Lenger to measurehomeopathic potencies with great accuracyusing magnetic resonance methods andsophisticated spectrum analyzers in shieldedFaraday cages (Lenger 2004). What isexciting is that these types of experimentsusing non-Hertzian waves are beginning tobuild an experimentally verifiable founda-tion for complementary medicine modali-ties such as homeopathy. This helps to putenergy and informational medicine on asound scientific basis.

Meyl suggests scalar waves propagate asmagnetic vortices along nerves. Specifically,

the myelinated nerves, with their regularly-spaced nodes of Ranvier in the myelinsheath, are not only speeding up the electricalnerve action potentials, but are simultane-ously wave guides for these magnetic vorticesinside our nervous system. I believe themagnetic nature of our bodily tissues, withtheir unique magnetic permeability anddielectric constants (which are frequencydependent), require much greater research tofully understand the complexity of our

energetic nature and the laws of vitality.

Over a hundred years ago, Tesla inventedcoils that generated high frequency fieldsthat Tesla hoped would ultimately lead to anew electromedicine. Today they are usedin gas discharge visualization devicesdeveloped by Dr. Konstantine Korotkoff, essentially a computer-based form of Kirlianphotography, to demonstrate energetic

phenomena with high voltage fields. Theyhave been used in the past to excite a cutleaf and show a phantom leaf effect. InFigure 15 this technique has been applied to

qualitatively evaluate processed breadcompared to organic bread. A Kirlian image

of a natural apple is quite different from onethat has been exposed to microwave heating,as seen in Figure 16. It is thought that agreater corona discharge pattern orbrighter image is correlated with greaternatural vitality. From that perspective, theorganic bread and the non-microwaved foodappear to be more desirable.

Before leaving this examination of electro-magnetic radia tion and water, i t i s

worthwhile to just mention the tremendouschanges that have taken place in our dailyenvironment through the introduction of

widespread microwave communication, especially with the introduction of cellphones and wireless computing. Thismicrowave radiation can penetrate childrens

brains much deeper because of their thinnerskull bones and brain water characteristics.Figure 17 shows an estimation of thepenetration of 900 MHz radiation into thebrain based on age. You can see that electro-magnetic radiation from a cell phonepenetrates more deeply into the skull of a5-year-old than a 10-year-old child. It doesnot penetrate as deeply into an adultbecause of their thicker skul l bones.Childrens brains are constantly developing

and still differentiating, so this form ofradiation can potentially adversely affectthem to a greater degree.

Even more disturbing is preliminary datacoming out of Sweden, where they havetracked the incidence of congenital malfor-mations and correlated it with the usagerate (speech time) of cell phone users.Epidemiological researchers found thatwhile the overall incidence of congenitalmalformations had shown an overal ldecrease between the 1970s and 1998, thattrend was broken when cell phones became

more widely used. Specifically, the numberof heart malformations has been risingsteadily since 1998 (Hallberg & Johansson2009). Perhaps there is a correlationbetween microwave radiation exposure fromcell phone use or background radiation inthat country and the development of theheart in utero. I wanted to present this datain the context of this presentation about theheart and its sensitive nature. A word ofcaution about the appropriate use of these

    technologies may be wise.

Another important area to just mention isthe power of sound and the use of soundfor healing. Puran and Suzanna Bairpresented their sacred process yesterday atthe ISSSEEM dinner involving sounds toopen up the inwardly perceived dimensionsof the heart. Other scientists are looking atvibrational patterns affecting water andother media. One of the first to do thiswas the German physicist Ernst Chladni(1756-1827), who made resonances visibleusing powder and sand on vibrating plates.Another was Hans Jenny in the twentieth

century, who used the word cymatics todescribe this resonance in liquids, gels andother media (Jenny 2001).

If you take water in a circular containerwith a small amount of dye as an indicatorand vibrate it, then specific frequenciescreate unique resonance patterns. AlexanderLauterwasser, a photographer and cymaticsresearcher, demonstrated that even smallchanges in frequency, say from 23.7 Hertz

to 24.2 Hertz to 24.24 Hertz, create totallydifferent resonant patterns, as shown inFigure 18 (Lauterwasser 2007). Sodepending on the container and thefrequency used to excite the water, quitedifferent resonances can arise. In electricalengineering we express sharp electromag-netic resonances in a circuit as having a highQ. It becomes even more interesting whenseveral tones are combined together thennew resonance patterns begin to arise. Thelate Dr. Peter Guy Manners in Englanddeveloped this field of sound healing into ahigh art.

To illustrate the complex frequency patternsused in this form of healing, consider Figure19 which shows a Heart Om, a patternthat is thought to be very healing for theheart. It consists of an experimentalcombination of five tones to create complexstanding wave pattern in water. The notesand frequencies involve G = 384 Hertz, B

= 480 Hz, C# = 544 Hz, D = 576 Hz andF = 672 Hz, all pulsed at 1.5 Hz, whichcalled the Abrams Universal Healing Rate(UHR). Extensive research in this area hasbeen carried out by Gary Buchanan inNevada, collaborating with other investiga-tors including Eric Larson, who developedthe cymatic visual ization equipment(Buchanan 2008). There will be actualvideo presentations of their cymatic work inthe upcoming Heart-Mind Communica-

tions seminar. One can imagine that thesekind of resonant patterns may have thepower to positively affect the healing of theheart.

Another heart healing pattern from thisresearch group is called the Heart PentaG. It is created when the note G, whichhas a special resonance to the heart, ismodulated by 1.5 Hertz increments. Again, this consists of an experimental combina-tion of five tones to create the complexstanding wave pattern shown in Figure 20.

The specific notes and frequencies used herewere G (-55 cents) = 93 Hertz, G (-27cents) = 94.5 Hz, G = 96 Hz, G (+27 cents)= 97.5 Hz and G (+53 cents) = 99 Hz. Theinherent beat frequency is 1.5 Hz, theAbrams Universal Healing Rate again. Theresult is this beautiful visual mandala.Perhaps these geometrical symmetries, thathave always been part of the Vedic sciences, will become researched as new modalitiesfor healing in the future.

Subtle energies also have the capacity tostructure water. As already mentionedearlier, water is changed by the forms

through which it flows. These will bedescribed shortly when I introduce specificf o rm s c a ll e d f l ow f or m s, o r ig i na l ly developed by John Wilkes in England

(Wilkes 2003). Dr. William Tiller hascarried out extensive research with waterand how it can be changed with mentalm e di t at i ve i n t en t io n . H e h as u s edintention-imprinted electrical devices(IIEDs) for his pioneering work. Theseutilize an oscillator with a millionth of awatt power that serves as a resonator forc on sc io us i nt en ti on a nd i s f ir stprogrammed to cause changes in waterpH and other biological assays. He and

his team succeeded in altering water pHand enzyme systems purely by mentalintention (Tiller 1997, 2001). Dr. GlenRein, while working at the Institute ofHeartMath, showed that DNA could bemeasured spectrophotometrically to showthe winding and unwinding of the DNAhelix by remote intention. He has usedthis assay to study various healers andtheir focused intentionality.

Earlier I described the heart as made up ofvarious muscle layers arranged in spiralingvortex patterns. Indeed we might go a stepfurther now and suggest that the heart is avortex generator itself that imbues a spin tothe blood traveling through it. This isanalogous to the vortex or spin fields thatthe physicist Dr. Claude Swanson talkedabout in his presentation on Russian torsionfield research. These ideas correlate wellwi th the p ioneer ing work of Vic torSchauberger, the Austrian forester and waterresearcher, who said that water was our mostprecious resource. He had shown that inside

an egg shape, liquid vortices form with greatease (Schauberger 1998; Alexandersson1982). I did some research in this directionseveral years ago by building a glass eggshape with water introduced tangentially torapidly create a powerful vortex (Figure 21).It confirmed that the resulting vortexfollowed the shape of a hyperbolic cone. This special geometry, essentially being ahyperbola in the vortexs cross-section,creates a most efficient vortex structure asalready shown by Victor Schaubergers son,Walter Schauberger (Radlberger 2005).

Many people now design and constructflowforms which allow different rhythms tobe imparted to the water that flows throughthem. The flowform shown in Figure 22 hasthe shape of a three-chambered fish heart.

One can literally see the pulsation impartedas the water flows through these forms. Itre-energizes the water and makes it mucheasier for plant life to grow. The English

inventor of these flowforms, the sculptorJohn Wilkes, installed many flowforms in theDutch NMB bank headquarter designed bythe late Ton Alberts of Amsterdam (Wilkes

2003). From reports of the staff there, flowforms contributed to creating a healingatmosphere in the building, including theunexpected disappearance of cardiovascularproblems within the staff.

In Europe, they are also using these flowforms in industry, like the one at the BioSophia grain milk (Demeter brand) produc-tion facility in Lillehammer, Norway, shown

in Figure 23. The impulse for these waterresearches came from the Anthroposophicallyor iented work of the German waterresearchers Wolfram and Theodor Schwenk

(Schwenk 1989). At the Demeter produc-tion faci l i ty, they also surround theflowforms with certain geometric structuresto enhance their effectiveness. As water

moves through these flowforms, the subtleenergies imparted to this grain milk areintensified, making it easier to assimilate.

To study these subtle changes in water, someAnthroposophical researchers use qualitative(rather than quantitative) techniques.Theodor Schwenk found that if drops of purewater were sequentially and slowly droppedinto test water, little vortices would form that

could be visualized through Schlieren photog-raphy. These beautiful vortex structures onlyoccurred if the water had a natural vitalityand was healthy for living organisms. If the

water was polluted, then these vortices wouldbe attenuated or would not form (Figure 24).This is strictly a qualitative way of testingwater to characterize its subtle energetic

character. Schwenks work is described ingreat detail in his books, Sensitive Chaos andWater: The Element of Life (Schwenk 1965and 1989).

We heard in Dr. Steve Levins talk about theimportance of the 60-degree angle in hisresearch with living systems. It reminded meof the water crystallization work beingconducted in Germany by Andreas Schulz, the developer of the Hagalis Method forassessing the quality of water. They foundthat the predominance of 60-degreehexagonal patterns in the crystallizationimages is an indicator of high water quality(Schulz 2005).

In Russia, Leonid Izvekov also carried outcrystallization studies. They looked atspring waters that have a lot of energy, aswell as healing waters and temple waterswhere people pray over the water (Figure25). They have also demonstrated throughthese crystallization studies that at certainseasons, like at the Easter season when theChrist impulse comes back on earth, thewater totally changes. Apparently playingclassical music creates this hexagonal crystal-lization snowflake pattern. Rock music hasa more adverse effect on the water with poorcrystallization images. Many people are

familiar with the work of Masaru Emoto, the Japanese water crystallization researcher. He and Leonid Izvekov actually met in2008 in Russia and are now collaboratingon some research.

In the remaining time that I have today, Iwould like to talk about what I consider theheart of the matter. I would like to pose aquestion: Can we develop a new model ofthe aetheric, of a new understanding of the

structure of the subtle realm? It is my beliefthat the true significance of the heart canonly be known when the nature of theaetheric heart is understood. Can we knowthe nature of the aetheric heart that RudolfSteiner talked so much about (Haertl2000), the heart that is connected with ourf ut ure ka rm a? Th is a pp ro ach t ounderstanding the heart is connected withwhat we create in the future. Beforedescribing a new possible model, it may behelpful to re-examine some of the aethertheories that have been disregarded ordismissed in our current approach tophysics.

Many of you are familiar with Dr. Elmer

Green, one of the founders of this society. Hehas often shown this diagram (Figure 26),which shows different planes of consciousnesswithin the Planetary Field of Mind, as he usedto call it. At the lowest level of this diagramwe see the Etheric Physical above the DensePhysical. Elmer was a great student of theTibetan D.K. (Djwal Khul), as well as havinga deep appreciation of the Theosophical wayof looking at the different levels of manifesta-tion and consciousness. If we accept that the

teachings of these ancient wisdom traditionshold some truth for us, then we have to finda way to build a bridge between science andspirit using modern approaches.

One hundred and four years ago in 1905,

Albert Einstein introduced the principle ofspecial relativity that led to the abolition ofthe luminiferous aether. This aether wasoriginally proposed in the 17th century byHuygens, who first gave us the wave theoryof light, in contrast to Newton's corpuscularway of looking at light. However, the aetherconcept goes back to the ancient Greekculture. To the Greek philosophers aetherwas not only the finest foundational essenceof the world, known as pneuma or the

world soul, it was also seen as the quintes-sence of heaven. So the aether was greatlyven er at ed i n t ha t e po ch o f h um anevolution. It is also not well known that

in 1920, Albert Einstein called for arelativistic aether. He had been invited byhis friend, the physicist Paul Ehrenfest(1880-1933), to be a special vis i t ing

professor at the University of Leiden in theNetherlands. On October 27, 1920, heaccepted th is appointment wi th aninaugural lecture on Ether and RelativityTheory. He said,

Thus we may also say, I think, that theether of the general theory of relativityarose out of the Lorentzian ether, throughrelativization. As to the part which thenew ether is to play in the physics of the

future we are not yet clear. We know thatit determines the metrical relations in thespace-time continuum, e.g. the configura-tive possibilities of solid bodies as well asthe gravitational fields; but we do notknow whether it has an essential share inthe construction of electrical elementaryparticles constituting matter.

Einstein stated that his Theory of GeneralRelativity never got rid of the aether it

jus t was no longe r the lum inifero us,somewhat mechanical aether that had beenvisualized and accepted in the past.

Two-time Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling wast he f ir st p er so n t o a pp ly q ua nt ummechanics to chemistry. He said, "To havea good idea, you need to have many ideas."I like that quote because it hints at theevolutionary process that physics also hadto go through in viewing the aether. It isinstructive to look up the Wikipedia listingon the luminiferous ether. In this compila-tion, one can get a sense of several different

aethers that were proposed over time.Einstein talked about it already in 1920 asthe relativistic aether. In 1953, LouisdeBroglie called it the subquantal aether. In

    1970, Dudley called it the neutrino-fluxaether (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luminiferous_ether).

More recently, the quantum physicistFriedwardt Winterberg (Winterberg 2002)and the German scientist Klaus Volkamer(Volkamer 2002) began to describe whatthey call a Planck Aether. Winterberg, whowas a physics professor at the Universityof Nevada, was a student of the great

quantum physicist Werner Heisenberg. His Planck Aether Hypothesis is based ona four-dimensional fluid mechanical ringvortex model also involving negativePlanck masses. In contrast, Volkamerdeveloped a different model involvingpositive and negative Planck masses in anexpanded twelve-dimensional modeldescribed later.

The Planck Aether Hypothesi s was

developed because there are several thingsthat are problematic with the current ZeroPoint energy model. According to thephysicist John Archibald Wheeler (1911-2008), who developed the theory of geometrodynamics, the so-called vacuumhas almost infinite energy calculated to bein the order of 1094 grams per cubiccentimeter, but exists in a state of perfectsymmetrical balance. The physicist MarkComings has called it the quantum plenumat past ISSSEEM meetings. According toWinterberg, unfortunately there aredivergences in the vacuum that lead to

    28/44

infinities. Physicists abhor infinities, andconstantly attempt to rid themselves ofthem through processes such as renormal-ization and other mathematical tricks. The

majority of scientists talk about many typesof fields coexisting in the vacuum andhave dismissed the aether completely.Wint er be rg tr ie d a fresh ap proa ch bybuilding a new model of the aether.

A central question might be asked: Has thevacuum become the aether? Volkamer hasbuilt a model that essentially suggests asubtle energetic realm of higher dimensionsby incorporating the Planck aether. He

derived the quantum properties of manysubatomic particles with his model. Moreimportantly, he has years of experimentalevidence on which to base his theory.

Before describing Volkamers work, we haveto understand the fundamental Planckunits. There is length, mass and time thatwe use to define energy. Energy is definedas length squared, times mass, divided bytime squared. Energy involves all three

quantal units. One of the fathers of modernquantum theory was the German physicistMax Planck, who proposed in 1899 that wecan simplify the equations of physicstremendously if we create certain constantsor fundamental quantal units. Length wasdefined as Plancks constant multiplied bythe gravitational constant divided by thecube of the speed of light. This Plancklength is minute and immeasurable, havinga value of 1.616 x 10-35 meters. It is at thislevel that string theorists claim to haverol led up an addi t iona l s ix or sevendimensions. As a result, string theory is the

result of some very creative thinking bytheoretical physicists; however, it can neverbe proven experimentally.

Planck time was defined by a similarformula as Planck length, except it uses thefifth power of the speed of light. Its valueis 5.391 x 10-44 seconds. This is also a verysmall number. We can never measure thistime its just too short. But it can be usedin calculations to simplify the physicsequations. Now we come to the thirdquantal unit called Planck mass that is alsovery small but unlike the other two, it ismeasurable. Its formula is Planck's constant

times the speed of light divided by thegravitational constant. Its value is 21.76micrograms; that is in units of a millionthof a gram. Scientists have developedsensitive instrumentation to measure at thatlevel. Dr. Klaus Volkamer in Germany hasbeen doing sequential measurements withvery sensitive scales for over twenty-fiveyears and found some unusual things. Hehas publ ished h i s f indings of theseanomalous weighing experiments in the

Journal of Scientific Exploration (Volkamer1994). The unexplainable weight changesover time are provocative, and ultimatelyrequire a theoretical explanation, which hehas offered in his books. Unfortunately, these are as yet only in German (Volkamer2002, 2007).

When he started his investigations, he wasrepeating the experiments done at the turnof the twentieth century in Germany at theKaiser Wilhelm Institute by Hans HeinrichLandolt. This work is mostly forgotten now(Landolt 1893). Landolt had shown that

there were small mass anomalies occurringin some chemical r eact ions . Theseanomalies were very small, close to the limitof detection with the weighing scales of his

time. These mass anomalies were furtherconfirmed by Sanford (Sanford 1897),Heydweil ler (Heydweil ler 1901) andManley (Manley 1913).

Then there was an extensive series of experi-ments conducted by the Anthroposophicalresearcher Rudolf Hauschka (Hauschka1950). He put seedl ings into sealedcontainers and observed periodic weightchanges when these seedlings sprouted and

grew. The living sprouted seeds becamesensitive indicators of the subtle realm, andresponded to the influence of lunar phasesd et ec te d t hr ou gh w ei gh t c ha ng es .Hauschka wrote a book about his experi-ments that began in the 1930s, which wasfirst published in 1950 as The Nature of Substance: Spirit and Matter. Hauschka wasaware that these weight changes were av io la ti on o f t he a cc ep te d L aw o f Conservation of Mass, first stated by Anton

Lavoisier, who unfortunately lost his headin the French revolution. With the furtherprovocative experimental evidence of KlausVolkamer, perhaps it is time to reconsiderthis law, which has locked us irrevocablyinto a restrictive materialistic paradigm thatneeds to be reexamined.

Allow me to give you a brief overview ofthese innovative experiments. Volkamerused a computer-linked microgram scalemanufactured by Sartorius AG in Germanyto conduct his sequential weighing experi-ments. This precision equipment, costing

around one hundred thousand dollars, represents todays s tate of the art inweighing technology. Trained as a physicalchemist, Volkamer kept weighing a small

sealed Erlenmeyer flask in which a chemicalreaction was initiated that led to the innersurface of the flask becoming silvered. Hewas repeating some of Landolts experi-ments with improved modern technology.Once the s i lver deposit ion had beencompleted, it created a subtle energytransducer that demonstrated anomalousand unexpected weight changes. One outof many trials occurred on October 12,1996 during a partial solar eclipse over

Europe. He observed changes in the massin the order of 15 micrograms thatcorrelated with the moon, acting as agravitational lens, moving over specific stars. His theoretical predictions of the moonsgravitational effect were exactly matched bythe weighing measurements (Volkamer2002, 2009). He further suggests that hisexperimental setup could be used to detectdark matter radiation. It was published inprestigious journals like Physics B and

    proceedings from dark matter symposia(Volkamer 1998, 2003).

He then developed a novel subtle matterdetector in the form of a rolled sheet ofaluminum foil with a polyethylene plasticinsulator. In some ways, it resembles howthe myelin sheath is wrapped around thenerves. It could be described as a sort ofspiral capacitor, with the polyethyleneinsulator keeping the foil from touching. As a control, he folded an identical sheet ofaluminum foil in a zigzag accordion-likemanner, again with a polyethylene insulator

(Figure 27) . The fo lded transducer

demonstrated absolutely no mass changes, but the rolled transducer showed significantvariability in the range of micrograms overdays (Figure 28).

Then he started many weighing experimentswith the new sensitive detector. In oneseries he had a trained healer sending energyto the transducer for 90 seconds with hishands and eyes about 20 cm away from thedetector, separated by the glass casing of the

scale. Before the healer started sendingenergy, the transducer maintained a perfectly stable weight. However, during the90 seconds that the trained healer was asked

to send energy with his hands and eyes, theweight of the detector increased by 30micrograms (Figure 29). In comparison,non-trained healers also had effects, butthey were much less effective in creatingweight changes. Using their hands and eyesto send energy using the same conditionsonly led to a 5 microgram change over 90seconds (Figure 30).

Another experiment was carried out to see

if the trained healer with his hands behindhis back could send energy to the transducerwith only a focused gaze through his eyes. Now the effect was only a tenth of theearlier weight change, and initially led to atwo-microgram decrease followed by asubsequent increase. Eventual ly thedetector mass stabilized with a smallincrease of 3 micrograms, when the healerstopped sending energy in this manner.

Then the healer did an experiment withouttelling Volkamer, which is shown in Figure31. After the earlier experiment of sendingenergy for 90 seconds had ended, the weightgain of around 30 micrograms had somewhatstabilized. After an additional minute, he

moved four meters away but sent the mentalintention to lower the weight increase thathe had created. As can be seen, the detectorsweight decreased at a slower rate and in astep-like manner to below its original massover eight minutes and 25 seconds.

These experiments demonstrate significantmass changes, ladies and gentlemen. Theseare not random fluctuations. Weight ormass is a fundamental quality of matter thatwe measure in physics. If these types ofeffects occurred here in Boulder at theNational Bureau of Standards, they wouldhave to explain them or at least begin toask questions as to their cause.

Here is a final example I want to show, anexperiment with a dying leaf. Volkamer hada freshly picked lilac leaf placed in a sealed,gas-tight container. After 15 hours, whenthe leaf died, it suddenly changed mass. There was a sudden three-microgram weightgain over the course of five minutes, andthen the weight was stable again. This isshown in Figure 32. He also investigatedthe effect of bringing an extracted toothnear the detector. This caused the weight ofthe detector to decrease by around 30micrograms over two minutes and stabilize

there. When he removed the tooth fromthe proximity of the detector one and a halfhours later, the weight returned to itsprevious baseline level.

Having developed a reproducible experi-mental method, Volkamer began to ask, what might be the cause of these anomalousmass changes taking place? He developed

extensive theories based on his Vedicsciences orientation and quantum physicsbackground and compiled a book inGerman which in Engl i sh could betranslated as Subtle Material Expansion of theNatural Sciences (Volkamer 2002). OurDove Health Alliance foundation is tryingto raise money to translate it into Englishright now, to make this material accessibleto English speaking scientists.

In his books, Volkamer builds a new modelof a geometrical Planck aether, correlatinghis f indings with current models of

q ua nt um p hy si cs . He a ct ua ll y h a ssucceeded in predicting many properties ofsubatomic particles quite accurately. Allowme to give you a brief glimpse into histheoretical model, because this may beimportant for our new view of the non-material aether.

I have adapted one of Volkamers drawingscomparing the current model of physics withhis conception of the subtle material domain.According to current understanding inphysics, the Big Bang gave rise to the fourforces. Then there is this virtual vacuum, inwhich you have these very fast tremblingmotions or Zitterbewegung a term thatthe quantum physicist Erwin Schrdinger

introduced. In 1930 he predicted thesetheoretical rapid motions of elementaryparticles in particular, electrons that obeythe Dirac equation. This came as a result of

his analysis of the solutions for wave packetsthat give rise to a physically manifestedworld. In this vacuum there is also acomplex flux of virtual particles coming andgoing all this relating to this massive energypotential in the Dirac Sea. Eventuallyeverything melts back together inside blackholes. All this is represented on the left sideof Figure 33.

What Volkamer has done on the right sideof the diagram is to introduce a new subtlematerial realm as the structure for manifes-tation out of the vacuum or zero pointenergy domain. To clarify, Level 1 on theright corresponds to Level 2 on the left, andhe leaves open the ultimate origin of the

manifested universe without necessarilyrequiring a Big Bang origin. However, hedif ferentiates between two dif ferentZitterbewegungen or two trembling

motions that hint at the reality of thesubtle realm or Planck aether. He believesthat in this Subtle Realm (Level 2 on theright), the non-material aether has a geomet-rical structure with positive and negativePlanck masses existing at the corners of acubical lattice in perfect equilibrium.

As things come into manifestation out of thevacuum, the first Zitterbewegung (Z3 - Z4)is representative of the well-known deBroglie wave length, in essence the matterwave of manifestation. Analogously, thesecond Zitterbewegung (Z1 - Z2) is represen-tative of the Compton wavelength, which

defines the particleness of manifestedexistence interacting with the aether. Hebelieves that only with a model that incorpo-rates the subtle realm as a basis for materialexistence can we make progress in explainingnot only many paradoxes that quantumphysics has shown us, but also to make senseof the weight changes he found.

He further suggests that this Planck aetherstructure requires not only our acceptedfour-dimensional manifested world of space-time but also two other four-dimensionalrealms or universes that interpenetrate ours. With reference to the basic Minkowski light

cone used in relativistic physics (Figure 34),it is accepted that we exist inside the lightcone in what is called the vertical time-likedomain. The sides outside of the shadedlight cone are called the space-like domains, and these are normally forbidden to us tosatisfy our relativistic physics. However, it

is proposed by Volkamer that the other twofour-dimensional realms that interpenetrateour universe exist here in this space-likedomain. All positive as well as negative

Planck masses are found in these two otherspace-like domains, respectively. The wholetheoretical construct requires a twelve-dimensional model with the possibility ofexplaining dark matter (positive Planckmasses) and dark energy (negative Planckmasses) interacting with our universe, astabulated in Figure 35.

His theory respects both special and generalrelativity, and offers new possibilities to

explain the interaction of these subtledomains with our universe, which aredetectable by repeatable weighing experi-ments. The one four-dimensional space-time domain is representative of what wehave called dark energy that which leadsto the expansion of the universe (Figure 35).Simultaneously, the other four-dimensional

space-time continuum which interpene-trates ours is perceived by us through ourrecognition of dark matter the positivePlanck masses that lead to gravitationalcontraction of our universe. From ourperspective, faster than light events canoccur wi th in these other two four-dimensional domains.

To recap, Volkamer suggests that threeinterpenetrating universes require a newtwelve-dimensional model which incorpo-rates an aether lattice consisting of positiveand negative Planck masses in symmetricalbalance at the level of Planck length. Interms of the smallness at this lengthdimension, it is analogous to string theory(Figure 36). It is suggested that positive

Planck masses that lead to the contraction ofthe universe, the constituents of dark matteror 23% of our perceived reality, are tetrahe-drally arranged in this cubical aether lattice(Figure 37). Interpenetrating this cubicallattice (and again this is non-manifest wecan only get at this indirectly by measuringthese weakly coupled interdimensionalinteractions through high precision weighing

experiments) are the negative Planck massesshown at opposite corners in orange (Figure38). These give rise to dark energy, whichleads to gravitational expansion.

Finally, in Volkamers geometrical aetherlattice model, the six faces of the cube arethe locat ions where the mater ia l ly manifested particles and constituents oftangible matter of our measurable universe

are found. This model of the aether latticehas to be capable of expla in ing oursubatomic particles, protons, neutrons, electrons, photons and so forth, if it is to

be seriously considered. A schematic ofthese face-centric positions in the latticecapable of giving rise to our manifestuniverse is shown in Figure 39.

A model of a photon existing in the latticeand propagating through it is shown inFigure 40. Notice each of the archetypalspins (So = h / 2 ) that interact together

give the photon a unity spin with no mass.Volkamer suggests that vortex pairs in thelattice lead to mass manifestation ofsubatomic particles, and are indicated asthick lines in the following two diagrams.Figure 41 shows a picture of a proton andfrom this aether lattice geometry Volkamerhas worked out the actual proton mass andspin characteristics. Similarly his modelpredicts other subatomic particle properties

such as mesons, muons, tauons, and soforth with great accuracy. Similarly, neutrons are shown in Figure 42, where alsoa gluon is shown. A gluon is thought to

mediate the strong color charge interactionsof quarks in the theory of quantum

chromodynamics, helping to hold protonsand neutrons together inside the nucleus.

Volkamer has developed a mathematicalmodel here that should be testable. Itappears to be capable of being correlatedwith all conventional quantum physical

theories. He also asks how this subtledomain would interac t wi th l iving

organisms and be coupled into the cellularorganelles to support life. He hypothesizesthat possible sites are wherever phaseboundaries occur in cells, such as in themyelin sheath that surround the nerves, inside the cristae of mitochondria, the cellsmicrotubules, and the DNA (Figure 43). It

is here that the subtle domain has mostdirect interaction with our bodies leading tovitality and life force. In essence, the subtledomains interpenetrate our bodies at all

times. This is also in alignment with theEastern teachings of the subtle bodies aswell as with the teachings of the ancientwisdom traditions. If this model is correct,we may coexist simultaneously in higherdimensions with our light bodies and haveaccess to incredible realms of consciousness.Perhaps our light bodies exist in these othereight dimensions, but they operate supralu-minally there. The restriction for ourphysical measurements here in the material

domain is that we are limited by the speedof light as our conversion factor betweenthese other domains. Volkamer suggeststhat a field in these other dimensions isperceived as a particle in our dimension.

In our current physics, we are not allowedto exceed the speed of light, according toEinsteins special relativity principle. So ifone des ires to understand where ouremotional or astral body (which means

starry body), or etheric body (or subtle vitalbody) exists, perhaps they exist in theseother dimensions that interpenetrate thismanifested domain. Ultimately, they endup interacting with our brain and nervoussystem, with massive numbers of bothmyelinated and unmyelinated neurons, through a variety of quantum physicalprocesses. The Akashic Field of universalmemory may potentially also be found inthese higher dimensional domains.

The trained meditator and Sufi practitionerPuran Bair has shown that he can actually

create a heart field that is electromagneti-cally measurable as pure light. He hasdemonstrated this in a laboratory setting, where he was instrumented with photomul-

tiplier tubes to capture the faint lightemanating from his chest. Applyingconscious meditative intention allowed himto increase his heart-centered light emissionsby many thousand fold. (Bair 2006)Perhaps this experiment gives us someindication that we are surrounded by faster-than-light-speed fields that interpenetrateour physical body. When they interact withour materially dense matter, which is ratherslow and viscous, this takes place at less than

the speed of light; however, this now ismeasurable with our instruments.

To come full circle then, I suggest that theheart may be seen from this model as anaetheric transducer for the entire body, coordinating its action through the waterymatrix, and extending outward to theplanetary matrix. The heart is in constantinterplay with the subtle realm. I hope wecan inspire more investigators to test this

model. According to ancient Yogic philos-ophy, the heart chakra has twelve petals, analogous to the twelve dimensionsproposed by Volkamer to understand thegreater reality in which we exist. His workhas been inspired by the old Vedic teachingsthat a re a l so the foundat ion of ourunderstanding of the chakras. The anahata,or heart chakra, is the central one withinthe seven-chakra system. Its beautifulsymbol is shown in Figure 44.

In conclusion, I hope to have inspired youto view the heart as much more than a
