AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of an online short-term course for
both Japanese language learners and Japanese students for university education. Now, many
universities are forced to conduct online courses for Japanese language learners due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. The author also conducted an online course which was held once a week
from October to December 2020, for both Japanese language learners and Japanese students,
utilizing Japanese anime and manga as textbooks. We initially established a limited capacity of
40 people, and received 130 applications, indicating that there is a high demand. The question-
naire at the end of the program also revealed that the degree of satisfaction with the course was
very high.
This paper will describe the main features in the course which are: using familiar works as
research subjects; collaborating by researchers in other cross-disciplinary fi elds; incorporating
active learning in which Japanese language learners and native speakers collaborate; giving
fi rst-year experience to learn basic research methods. Finally, the refl ection points and future
prospects will be argued.
