Christopher Columbus was one of the first explorers sponsored by Spain.

He asked the King and Queen to support his expedition several times before

they finally agreed. They supplied Columbus with 3 ships and a crew of men.

Columbus’ mission was to find a safer route to India and China by sailing west.

Columbus and his men experienced many obstacles during their journey.

There were no maps to help them navigate to their destination. The men did not

even know if they could reach the Indies by traveling west. The trip was long

and hard; the crew was frightened and wanted Columbus to turn around and

sail home. He promised his men that he would return home if they didn’t reach

land soon, within days land was spotted. Columbus and his crew believed they

had reached India, so they called the people that lived there Indians. They had

actually landed on an island in the Bahamas. He named it San Salvador. During

the trip they also explored Cuba and Hispaniola. Columbus was able to make

three more voyages with several ships. He settled lands in Central and South

America. Though Columbus died thinking he had reached the Indies, he is

remembered as the one who discovered America.

Juan Ponce de Leon is probably one of the most interesting explorers. He

was chosen in 1493, to sail as a crew member with Christopher Columbus.

After the expedition, instead of returning to Spain with Columbus, Ponce de

Leon chose to stay in Santa Domingo.

He soon conquered nearby Puerto Rico for Spain and heard many reports

of gold and the Fountain of Youth, a place that would help people live forever.

Ponce de Leon sent word to Spain and was commissioned to search for this

treasure. He found much gold in Puerto Rico, and continued his exploration.

His search took him north to the coast of a place with many flowers. He named

this place, Florida, which is Spanish for “covered in flowers.” Ponce de Leon

was the first European explorer to set foot on what is now the continental

United States. It was here that he encountered the Native Americans that

already occupied the land. During his last expedition to Florida , Ponce de

Leon was wounded by an arrow during a battle with Native Americans where

he lost his life.

Vasco Nùñez Balboa grew up wanting to become an explorer.

In 1501, Balboa joined an expedition to South America that was

sponsored by Spain.

He spent time on the island of Hispaniola, but left after

being unsuccessful as a farmer. Later Balboa led an expedition

to Panama in search of a land route to the Pacific Ocean. It was

here that Balboa married an Indian princess. He also fought and

conquered many tribes of Native Americans.

Balboa was told of land that was rich in gold. During his

search for this place, he discovered a land route to the Pacific

Ocean. He became famous as the first European to see the

eastern Pacific. He claimed the land for Spain.

Jacques Cartier

Jacques Cartier was sponsored by France to search for riches and a

shorter route to Asia. In 1534, Cartier left France and landed in the Gulf

of St. Lawrence within twenty days after he set sail. He soon met a group

of Native Americans known as the Huron. When Cartier returned to

France, the Huron Chief sent two of his sons to accompany him. The king

was impressed with his discovery and agreed to sponsor another

expedition the following year.

Cartier explored over 1,000 miles of the river during his three

expeditions to the New World . He and his men encountered many

obstacles. During one expedition, his crew became ill and were given

assistance by the Huron Tribe. They were cured by drinking tea made

from the White Cedar tree. However, once the Huron people realized the

French intended to occupy the land, they were no longer friendly . During

the winter, Cartier lost many of his men during battles with the Huron. He

returned home the following spring and never returned to the New World,

but he will always be remembered for his exploration of the St. Lawrence

River and for giving Canada its name.

In 1607, Henry Hudson led two expeditions sponsored by England to

find a shorter trade route to Asia. He attempted to cross the Arctic Ocean

however, icebergs hindered his passage. The two attempts failed, but

Hudson finally convinced Holland to sponsor a third expedition. This time

Hudson attempted to find a passage by traveling across the Atlantic.

The journey was long and hard. After a few months, Hudson spotted

land. He landed on a small group of islands close to Newfoundland.

Hudson sailed up the coast into a body of water that has become known as

the Hudson River. Hudson believed that this river might lead to the Pacific

Ocean, but he was wrong and had to return to Europe.

Hudson led a final expedition looking for a passage to the east. He

sailed across the North Atlantic into Canada. He discovered a very large

body of water that was named after him, Hudson Bay. Unfortunately, the

weather turned bitterly cold. Hudson’s men wanted him to turn back, but he

wanted to continue his search for a shorter trade route. His men mutinied

against him. He was put off the ship in a small boat and was never seen

again.
