Explorers of the Lost Kingdom Series at a Glance for Elevate

About this Series:

Have you ever thought about how great boundaries are? They’re the frame around a painting, the painted line in a sports arena. Boundaries create space for life, fun, and freedom within them. The

laws God gave to his people aren’t meant to be rules to check off a list, but boundaries to create spaces where we can live the way God made us to. Join us in this series as we explore the borders

God set up for his people thousands of years ago!

Key Verse: Deuteronomy 10:13- “Obey the Lord’s commands and rules. I’m giving them to you today for your

own good.”

Explorers of the Lost Kingdom

Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued)

Lesson 1: The Stone Tablets

This week, we’ll journey to recover one of the most precious items in the entire kingdom of Israel:

Their rules. What makes these rules so important? We’ll find out as we answer the question: What

rules do you live by?

Lesson 2: The Broken Statue

This week, we’ll excavate the story of how God’s people decided to follow a statue, instead of God. Dig

down a little more, and we’ll find out how Moses dealt with that problem, and showed the people of

Israel that nothing can take God’s place.

Lesson 3: The Sign of the Cloud

Our adventure continues, as God’s people are lost in the wilderness. Following an impressive cloud,

they know God is with them, but some of them feel restless. When two people challenge Moses, the

leader God chose, they quickly realize that disrespect and disobedience hurts everyone.

Lesson 4: The Royal Robe

Have you ever wanted something that wasn’t yours? When Achan saw an expensive robe, and some

money just lying around, he decided to take it. As we unearth Achan’s story, we’ll see why being happy

with what we have is a good rule to live by.

Lesson 5: The Final Scroll

Our whole journey has led to this moment. We’ve discovered the manuscript of the final speech of one of Israel’s leaders: Joshua. This week, we’ll talk about the choices Joshua made, and how choosing the rules we live by can change our lives.

Opening Song and Welcome 1:00 Hey everyone! It’s time to start it up, so come on down front, throw away your popcorn, and find a place to sit. Welcome, everyone! My name is __________. I am so excited to be with you this weekend. I am so glad every one of you is here today, it’s going to be a lot of fun!

Team Time 14:00

We’re in a series called Explorers of the Lost Kingdom. We’re looking back in time and discovering some of the greatest treasures God gave His people, thousands of years ago. Today we’ll have fun music, time with your groups, and we’ll see what our favorite underground news team is up to in the Source. To get started, let’s play a game in our groups!

This game is called “Sculpt-ionary!” One person in your group is going to sculpt something out of clay, and the others have to guess what it is! The sculptor can’t make any noise, but they can move their sculpture around if that helps. Your group leader will tell you what to sculpt with a set of sculptionary cards! You can head over to your groups and get ready to play!

Do This: Allow the groups to play! When there is one minute left, or you notice groups finishing, encourage them to wrap up, and come back to the front.

Alright everyone, come on up to the front, and get ready for a challenge from our challenge wheel!

Pose like a statue, and hold completely still for 20 seconds! Ready? Set? Go! Do This: Strike a silly statue pose with the kids.

That was tougher than I thought! So, we’ve had some sculpting, and we’ve posed like statues. What’s with this statue theme? Well, today we’re talking about things called “idols.” Idols used to just mean statues, but today, it means a lot more. We’ll find out what idols look like today, and what they looked like thousands of years ago, in “The Source!”

Let’s check in with Rue, and the Source news team, and see what they’re up to today.

Wow, I would want to impress someone I cared about, too, but how far is too far? You’ll get to talk about that with your groups next! You can look for your grade’s flag, and head over to group time.

Group Time 15:00

Do This: Make sure each kid finds their group. Help group leaders if there is a need. Encourage kids as they work to answer the question. Know This: This is a time for kids to search for answers in the Bible, and see how they can use the Bible to investigate and better understand life. This time is designed for kids to interact and deepen their understanding. They won’t get all the answers, but allow them to question and discover as much as possible. Be ready to support group leaders in any way needed.

Do This: Give the groups a warning about one minute before this time is up.

Media: Part 2 9:00 Come on back, everyone! I’m excited to find out what happens to the Source team, let’s watch and see!

February 23/24 8

Nothing at all can take God’s place. I can see that God’s people made a big mistake, but I wonder if I ever do anything like that?

Application 6:00 When God gave His people the ten commandments, this was number one. Do not put anything before God.

Rue said it like this: Nothing can take God’s place. There is no one greater, no one else who should be first in our lives. It sounds easy to not do what Israel did. We don’t bow down to statues much today, but the Source team struggled with this today, too. They weren’t bowing to a statue, but they were looking to someone besides God to lead them.

Why is putting God first such a big deal? You see, what we follow defines how we live. If we put God first, it means making the choices He would want us to make, but if we follow other things before God, they’ll want us to make different choices than God would. Imagine life is like a jungle.

You need to choose a guide, and lots of things are happy to lead you. You could choose to follow sports, friends, awards, grades, you could even choose to put yourself first, and just try to figure it out alone. A lot of people follow those things, but like the people learned in the story about Moses, just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. I don’t know how to get through this jungle of life. My friends don’t have the answer, sports don’t have it, grades don’t have it, and even my family doesn’t have it. The only one we can always trust to lead us is God. He made us and knows everything about us. He knows how we were made to live, and will always lead us the

right way. That’s why nothing can take His place. That’s important for you to think about this week, as you keep working on your mission statements.

Do This: Show kids the big personal mission statement handout. During this series, we’re creating our own personal mission statements. You can do these as fast or as slowly as you want to, but each week here we’ll be completing another piece of it. This week, we’re filling out the “priorities” section. Priorities is another word for the things that are most important to us. What we put first is super important. Like we talked about, God is the most important one to put first.

Do This: Write “God” on the priorities section of the big personal mission statement in dry erase marker.

What are some other things that are super important to us?

Do This: Allow kids to answer, and write down their answers on the board, in no particular order. Accept all appropriate answers, as they are probably genuinely important to the kid who said them. Feel free to share some of your priorities with the kids.

There are some good answers up here. Our families, friends, school, and many more things are super important, but it’s really up to you what order you put them in. Sometimes, you’ll have to make tough choices, but if you make a list of priorities ahead of time, it can help you know and remember what’s most important to you. This week, talk with your family about what’s most important to you. What does it mean to always put God first? What do we choose if we can’t do both sports and family time? Knowing your priorities can help you make wise decisions when you need to. And, you can be the one to start those important conversations with your family.

One way we remember that God is always first in our lives is by singing and worshipping Him. This song is about choosing to follow God, no matter what. Let’s stand and sing together!

Wrap-Up 1:00

God is amazing. Let’s keep worshipping Him with another great song, about following God’s heartbeat every day.

Awesome singing, you can sit, but let’s take a moment to talk to God. God, you are amazing. Thank you for leading us. Thank you that we can always trust you. Help us to follow you every day. In Jesus’ name, amen. We’re almost done, but there’s one thing to make sure you get on your way out. Do This: Show kids the Family Connection Card This Family Connection Card is a great way to bring what you learned today home. Be sure to pick it up, and check out the back! That’s where you can make your own personal mission statement. Last week, we filled out the “Who Am I” section, and this week we talked about the “Priorities” section. Take the chance to talk about this with your families, and find out what’s most important to them. I’ve had a lot of fun hanging out with you all today, I hope to see you all next week!
