sponsor adyour guide to fresh, local produce in season FARMERS MARKETS
WHY LOCAL? Freshly picked ripe fruits and vegetables are at the peak of their nutritional value – and their flavor! When you shop at a farmers market, produce may have been picked early that morning. It’s also better for the environment because it didn’t have to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to get there.
NEW TASTES Have you tasted jackfruit? Dragonfruit? Sorrel? Different kinds of radishes? What about a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes in all sizes and colors? South Florida farmers grow all kinds of crops, heirloom varieties and tropical fruits. The market is a great place to taste them.
ORGANIC FARMS Organic food does not have chemical additives or pesticides. To become certified organic, a farm must comply with USDA organic regulations. Some farms use organic practices, but they have not gone through the process of certification.
SNAP/EBT/FOOD STAMPS These benefits are accepted at some farmers markets, and purchases of Florida fruits and veggies receive up to $20 in matching dollars. This program is to make healthy eating accessible to all. Look for this symbol ❖ in the Farmers Markets listings.
MEET YOUR FARMER When you go to a farmers market, you can meet the people who grow your food. They can tell you about different varieties, explain how to prepare what you buy and introduce you to new products. They’re happy to talk about what they grow.
WHAT’S A CSA? It stands for Community-Supported Agriculture, in which consumers buy “shares” of a farm and get a box of produce every week during the farming season. This system gives farmers money early in the season, helping with their cash flow, and lets consumers enjoy fresh produce every week. CSA boxes often include new types of fruits and vegetables to try.
ARTISAN FARE Where can you get crunchy granola, rustic loaves of bread, jams and jellies made with local fruits, small-batch ice cream and tasty Florida honey? At the farmers market! Best of
all, you can usually sample their products before you buy.
GET COOKING At some markets, you might see a chef demonstration on preparing dishes using local produce. You can also pick up recipe cards using local produce. One good source is Local Flavor: Recipes Raised in the Florida Redland, produced by Miami-Dade County, featuring recipes from local cooks using products grown in South Florida. Find it at some farmers markets or order online: parkstore.miamidade.gov/RedlandRaisedCookbook.aspx. And you can always find recipes on ediblesouthflorida.com.
LET’S GO! In South Florida, most of the farmers markets are held on weekends, but there are weekday and weeknight markets, too. Farmers markets are always kid-friendly and many are pet-friendly, too. Make farmers markets visits a regular part of your commitment to include healthy, local foods as part of your diet!

DIG IN TO HEALTH
When Grow2Heal opens at Homestead Hospital, we will be helping the community from the inside out by growing fresh fruits and vegetables for patients, visitors, employees
and local organizations in need. Fruits and vegetables are key factors in preventing and controlling chronic conditions, but accessibility and consumption are declining nationwide.
To help promote healthier living, our organic farm and hands-on workshops will educate the young and old on proper nutrition. And a healing trail lined with herbs,
fruit trees and native flowers will provide a path to better health and wellness. For more information, email [email protected].

FARMERS MARKETSSouth Florida’s farmers market season is in full swing between November and April, when fall and winter produce is grown and harvested for consumers in Florida and beyond. Many markets also stay open year-round, showcasing tropical fruits and summer produce. The following markets are open all year. For a list of all South Florida markets, visit ediblesouthflorida.com.
Buying in season means purchasing produce when it’s ripe. These fruits and vegetables are harvested and sold in South Florida markets during these months. Their availability may vary depending on weather conditions and individual varieties. Just because you see these items for sale in a farmers market doesn’t mean they were grown in South Florida. If they’re not labeled “local,” ask the vendor where they’re from.
