WHY LOCAL? Freshly picked ripe fruits and vegetables are at the peak of their nutritional value – and their flavor! When you shop at a farmers market, produce may have been picked early that morning. It’s also better for the environment because it didn’t have to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to get there.

ORGANIC FARMS Organic food does not have chemical additives or pesticides. To become certified organic, a farm must comply with USDA organic regulations. Some farms use organic practices, but they have not gone through the process of certification.

SNAP/EBT/FOOD STAMPS These benefits are accepted at some farmers markets, and purchases of Florida fruits and veggies receive up to $20 in matching dollars. This program is to make healthy eating accessible to all. Look for this symbol ❖ in the Farmers Markets listings.

MEET YOUR FARMER When you go to a farmers market, you can meet the people who grow your food. They can tell you about different varieties, explain how to prepare what you buy and introduce you to new products. They’re happy to talk about what they grow.

WHAT’S A CSA? It stands for Community-Supported Agriculture, in which consumers buy “shares” of a farm and get a box of produce every week during the farming season. This system gives farmers money early in the season, helping with their cash flow, and lets consumers enjoy fresh produce every week. all, you can usually sample their products before you buy.

GET COOKING At some markets, you might see a chef demonstration on preparing dishes using local produce. You can also pick up recipe cards using local produce. FARMERS MARKETSSouth Florida’s farmers market season is in full swing between November and April, when fall and winter produce is grown and harvested for consumers in Florida and beyond. Many markets also stay open year-round, showcasing tropical fruits and summer produce. The following markets are open all year. For a list of all South Florida markets, visit ediblesouthflorida.com.

Buying in season means purchasing produce when it’s ripe. These fruits and vegetables are harvested and sold in South Florida markets during these months. Their availability may vary depending on weather conditions and individual varieties. Just because you see these items for sale in a farmers market doesn’t mean they were grown in South Florida. If they’re not labeled “local,” ask the vendor where they’re from.
