summer camp, we give opportunities for each person to grow, explore, discover, create, imagine, play, and have fun!

Registering for our camps continues to be an easy process through our online registration portal. Our online service is fast, safe and simple. If you are a returning family, your login and password remain the same as last year. There is a link to retrieve this information on the main page if you need it. For new families, simply go online to set up your account.

Helpful Hints for Online Registration:

•Have your child’s health and emergency information available as this is required for all campers.

•To secure your child’s spot in camp, a non-refundable deposit of $25 per half day camp plus a one-time registration fee of $15 per camper is required at time of registration.

•Payments are accepted in the form of electronic check, Visa or MasterCard. Balances for all camps are due June 1, 2016.

Program OverviewSummer at Emerson is open to all students, regardless of school attended. We offer eight individual weeks of half-day campsforchildrenwhohavecompletedgradesK-8duringthe2015-2016schoolyear.Morning(9am-12pm)andafternoon(1-4pm)campscanbeselectedduringthesameweektoenjoyafull-dayoffun.Enrollinasmanyeducationalandfuncamps as you like!

Grade LevelsAllcampsaredesignedforstudentscompletinggradesspecifiedinthecampdescriptionduringthe2015-2016schoolyear. Grade levels are set by the instructors and will not be altered.

Before and After Camp Child CareChildcareisavailablebeforeandaftercamponadrop-inbasiseachday.Beforecampchildcarerunsfrom8-9amfor$6/day.Aftercampchildcarerunsfrom4-6pmfor$6/hour.There is a strict $4/minute per child late fee for all campers picked up after 6pm. Child care charges are billed to your account and sent via email. Note: if your child arrives before 8:50am or is picked up after 4:10pm, you will be charged for child care.

Lunch and RecessThelunchperiod(12-1pm)includessupervisedlunchandoutdoorrecesstime.Thishourisprovidedfreeofchargeifmorningand afternoon camps are chosen during the same week. The lunch hour may be added for $10/day for our half-day attendees on a drop-in basis. Your account will be billed for this time and sent via email. Note: If your child attends half-day camp and is picked up after 12:10pm or arrives before 12:50pm, you will be charged for child care. LunchCampers who are registered for a morning and afternoon camp during the same week eat lunch from 12-12:30pm and have recess from 12:30-1pm, both supervised by Summer at Emerson staff. Campers must bring their own lunch and drink each day. There are no vending machines, lunch service, drinks, or refrigeration available at Summer at Emerson.

SnacksDailysnackswithapplejuiceareprovidedforeachmorningandafternooncamp.Wewillhappilyfindareplacementsnackforcamperswithfoodallergiesbutnotforfinickyeaters.Thesnackschedulewillbepostedeachweekforallcampersand parents to see. Typical snacks include: bagels, fruit, animal crackers, pretzels, Cheez-Its, cereal bars, fruit snacks, etc. Campers are always welcome to bring snacks from home.

Camp FeesHalf-day camp fees range from $115-$150, as noted with each camp’s description. Camp fees are not pro-rated for any reason. A non-refundable deposit of $25 per half-day camp plus a one-time registration fee of $15 per camper is required attimeofregistration.Thereisa$25feeforreturnedchecksandan$8feeforACHerrors.

Registration & PaymentOnline registration begins on February 1, 2016. A non-refundable deposit of $25 per half day camp plus a one-time registration fee of $15 per camper is required at time of registration. We accept payment through electronic funds transfer, VISA and MasterCard. All balances are due June 1, 2016. If camps are added after June 1st, payment in full is required at time of registration. All paper checks received will be processed electronically. Campconfirmationwillbeemailed immediately after payment is processed.

Camp WithdrawalsRemaining balances, less deposit, will be refunded for withdrawals made before June 1, 2016. Those who withdraw after this date are responsible for the full fee. Exceptions will be considered for medical circumstances with a doctor’s note.

Camp CancellationsSummer at Emerson reserves the right to cancel any camp if minimum enrollment is not met. If this is the case, you will be notifiedimmediatelyviaemail.Depositsforcancelledcampswillbeappliedtowardyourbalanceorrefunded.Everyeffortis made to avoid this possibility.

Waiting ListsManycampsfillquickly,soregisterearly.Onceacampisfull,youmaychoosetojointheonlinewaitinglist.Thereisnodeposittojoinawaitinglistandyouwillbenotifiedviaemailifaspotbecomesavailable.

Off Campus TripsSchoolbusesprovideoff-campustransportationforfieldtrips(notedinclassdescription).CamperssignedupforthesefieldtripsarerequiredtocompletetheonlineFieldTripAuthorizationForm.

Summer at Emerson 2016 Information

Health FormYour child’s health information is required to register for any camp at Summer at Emerson. Health information, including insurance information, will be collected online during registration. Please be sure to note if your child has any allergies, medically-necessary dietary restrictions, or needs to take medication while at camp.

MedicationCamperswhorequiremedicationduringcamphoursmusthaveacompletedMedicationAuthorizationFormonfile(foundintheDocumentCenteronline).Prescriptionmedicationsrequireaphysician’ssignatureandallmedicationsmustbesubmittedtotheSummerOfficeintheiroriginalcontainers.Nocampermaybeinpossessionofanymedications.MedicationwillremainintheSummeratEmersonofficeanddispensedtocampersasneeded.Thisincludes emergency medication for allergic reactions, prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up: Electronic Sign In and Out with PINEachdayaparent/guardianmustwalkeachcamperinsideandsigninonouriPadswithapersonalizedidentificationnumber(PIN).ThisnumberwillbeemailedouttoallparentstheweekbeforeyourchildattendscampandwillincludeaPINforeachadultthatisauthorizedtopickupyourchild.Attheendofeachday,aparent/guardianmustcomeintothebuildingtousehis/herPINtosignoutonouriPadsandpickuptheircamper(s).Nocamperwillbepermittedtoleavethebuildingwithoutanadult.PleasedonotshareyourPINwithanyoneandifyouneedtoaddanotherperson,email the Summer Director at [email protected].

ElectronicsCampers should not bring electronics with them to camp. Video games, laptops, cell phones, and cameras are not allowedatcamp.Theonlyexceptiontothisiswhenneededspecificallyforacertaincamp(StopMotion,DigitalPhotography,etc.).Inthosecases,electronicdevicescanbeusedduringcamptimeONLYandthenstoredinhis/herlocker or at the Summer at Emersonoffice.Electronicdevicesarenottobeusedatrecessorinbeforeoraftercampchild care.

SunscreenApply sunscreen to your child before arriving at camp. If a second application is needed, please provide sunscreen that is clearly marked with your child’s full name. We will remind students to reapply sunscreen after lunch, before going out for recess. A sunscreen application waiver must be completed online before we can assist your child. Summer at Emerson can not supply sunscreen for any camper.

PhotographyDuring camp, your child’s photograph may be taken which will be posted to our Summer at Emersonflickraccount,linked on our website. These photos may also be used in future Summer at Emerson publications, social media promotions or advertisements. It is our policy not to publish children’s names with their photos. Please contact the Summer Program Director in writing prior to your child attending camp if you do not want your child photographed.

Birthday TreatsIf you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at camp, please contact the Summer Director at least one week in advance in order to check for allergies or special dietary restrictions in your child’s camps. Better yet, in order to be inclusiveforeveryone,anon-foodtreatwouldbeagreatidea(thinkPlay-Doh,eraser,smalltoy,stickers,etc.)

Family PetsDue to campers’ allergies and fears, please do not bring pets into the building when dropping off or picking up your child at Summer at Emerson.

Facilities & StaffEmersonSchoolislocatedjusttenminutessouthwestofdowntownAnnArboronabeautiful,20acre,ruralsetting.The air-conditioned classrooms, technology labs, new Performing Arts Theater, and gymnasium, as well as the outdoor sportsfields,playground,andnatureareas,willbefullyutilizedthroughoutthesummer.Allcampsaredesignedandrun by a professional staff of caring and experienced teachers. Summer at Emerson is fully licensed by the State of MichiganasachildcareproviderandthemajorityofourstaffmembersareCPRandFirstAidcertified.

Campers are split into two groups based on ability levels and along with instruction andmatchplay,recreationtimewillbespentoutside.Thefirstfourdaysofchessinstructionwillbefollowedbyafour-round tournament on Friday. At the conclusion of camp this week, Summer at Emerson will provide each Chess camper a membership to the Michigan Chess Association. ANCIENT CHINESE STORYTELLING WITH SHADOW PUPPETS Completed Grades 2-4Join a vibrant cast of characters from throughout Chinese history as they retell some of China’s most celebrated stories, such as the Monkey King and Journey to the West. We will introduce several classic Chinese legends, myths, and folk stories using the distinct storytelling style of shadow puppets. GERMAN BOARD GAMES Completed Grades 4-8This summer, learn to play some of the most popular and exciting board games in the world. Whether you’ve never rolled dice or earned a Victory Point before, or if you play board games every day, all levels of skill are welcome. We’ll take our board game skills to the next level as we learn to play many games, including “The Settlers of Catan” and “Ticket to Ride;” we’ll dive into strategy and game mechanics to discover what makes these games fun and unique. Counselor in Training ProgramTheCounselor-in-Training(CIT)programat Summer at Emerson provides an opportunity for Middle and High School students to develop leadership skills in a comfortable atmosphere. Interested students who have completed grades 6-12 will learn what it takes to be a counselor in the summer program and enhance their leadership abilities.

CITs will work as a team, in small groups, and individually to learn about working with young children in a summer camp environment. Upon successful completion of training, CITs will be invited back to Summer at Emerson as a Junior Counselor to use their new skills and assist with one full-day week of camp.

TheCITprogramisheldduringtheweekofJune27-July1,2016from9:00am-4:00pm.Attendanceduringthisweek is mandatory. Please note that there are a limited number of CIT spaces available and only a select number of Junior Counselor spaces available each week. Students who have participated in the CIT program in the past are still required to take the CIT training.

Applications are due by March 31, 2016; a response will be emailed to you by April 11, 2016. There is no application fee and if accepted to the CIT program, the $230 tuition is due by June 1, 2016. FortheweekofJuly5-8,weareofferingindividualdaysofcampsincludingfieldtripsthataredesignedtoofferexcitingexperiences,fosternewfriendships,andalsotobeflexibletoparents’schedules.TheseindividualdaysareopentoallcamperswhohavecompletedgradesK-8duringthe2015-2016schoolyear.

Eachday,we’lldividethecampersintosmallgroupsbygradeandheadoutforourfieldtrippromptlyat9am.The trips and activities will be led and supervised by Summer at Emerson Staff and will occur rain or shine, so send your child dressed appropriately. Snacks are provided each day. Lunch is provided on Tuesday and Friday; send a lunch with your child on Wednesday and Thursday.

You can register for the days individually as needed. We will return to Emerson for a taco bar from Moe’s for lunch and various activities in the afternoon, including: indoor sports, friendship bracelets, outdoor recess, painting, games, and more.

AschoolbuswilltakeustoGreenfieldVillagewherewewillexplorethemanyhistoricbuildingsandfarmsandsee what life was like many years ago. Thursday, July 7th Toledo ZooFull-Day(9am-4pm)Fee:$85 AdditionalChildCare(8-9am&4-6pm):$6/hour

AcomfortablecharterbuswilltakeustotheToledoZoofortheday.Plentyofgamesareplannedtooccupyusonthehour-longbusridethereandbackandwewillenjoyseeingmanyanimalsthroughouttheday.Camperswill need to bring their own lunches, complete with drink, and carry them throughout the day. We will provide draw string back packs to each camper.

Friday, July 8th Creature ConservatoryFull-Day(9am-4pm)Fee:$70 AdditionalChildCare(8-9am&4-6pm):$6/hour

We will visit the Creature Conservatory in Ann Arbor to learn about endangered species and meet some rare animals. Cheese pizza lunch from Cottage Inn will be served at Emerson, followed by a variety of choose-your-own activities in the afternoon, including: indoor sports, friendship bracelets, outdoor recess, games, and more.

COOKING KIDS I Completed Grades K-1Did you know you can make lots of things to eat all by yourself? Campers will have the opportunity to make tasty snacks andevencookafamilymeal.Focuswillbeonbasicrecipesthatkidscanmakeeasily,ontheirown!Enjoylotsoffuninthe kitchen while learning basic safety skills and how to measure. Campers will be allowed to eat the food they prepare. Recipeswillincludesunbutter,eggs,andcheesealongwithotheringredients.Thiscampisalsoofferedduringweek4AM.Instructor: Sue Beech Fee:$140Limit: 18

KIDS ON CANVAS Completed Grades K-2These are no ordinary paintings! Get ready for a painting adventure that features fabulous artists, acrylic painting techniques, and most importantly, buckets of fun! Create paintings that explore patterns, include texture, and incorporate fun designs and eye-popping portraits. Grab a paintbrush and have a world of fun learning about amazing artwork from Turkey to Iceland to Korea and back! Instructor: Abrakadoodle Fee: $150 Limit: 18

Sue Beech has been at Summer at Emerson for 13 years, teaching the kids games, songs, cooking, and quilting but the thing that she does best is anything related to crafting.

Larry Biederman student-taught at Emerson in 2001 and has been working at Summer at Emerson ever since. He teaches high school and he loves doing volunteer work.

Simon Burchill has led multiple camping and team-building programs over the past two decades. He currently works for the University of Michigan at their Challenge Program.

Marchell Burgess is a fourth grade teacher at Emerson School. She has two sons and enjoys crafting in her spare time.

Leslie Capozzoli has been a teacher and orchestra director at Emerson School for 14 years. She loves to make music, crochet, and play with her dogs. She loves summer teaching because you can relax and enjoy the sunshine!

Julie Cohen teaches Middle School Art at Emerson and is excited to return to teaching summer camps this year!

Lenny Dale has taught P.E. and coached at Emerson for years. Lenny’s a big kid at heart, loving friendly competition and sharing his enthusiasm with kids.

Justyna Delaj is a Middle School teacher at Emerson and has been involved in education and youth summer programs for over 12 years. Her time spent teaching overseas only fueled her love for travel, culture, and exotic food.

John Evans has been a teacher in Milan for over 18 years. This will be his 14th Summer at Emerson. He loves teaching kids about animals, bugs, and other creepy crawlies. John enjoys sharing his sense of humor and creativity with the campers.

Mark Fancher is a sixth degree black belt in traditional Korean martial arts who has been certified as a master instructor by the International Martial Arts Association. He is the director of the Moo Duk Martial Arts Institute in Ypsilanti and is an attorney by profession.

Alex Heidtke is a returning instructor and counselor who teaches English at Columbia Schools. He loves to create, play, and make people laugh. Alex is excited to return for his fourth Summer at Emerson.

Sam Heidtke is a graduate from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Education. She works at Emerson year-round and can’t wait to start her fourth Summer at Emerson!

Amparo Herbert has been with Summer at Emerson for over ten years and believes that allowing campers to express themselves and stimulating their minds promote creative thinking, even in their down time.

Rebecca Hunter is a educator and violinist who recently relocated to Ann Arbor where she is presently building a private studio, performing in regional orchestras, and leading sectionals and workshops at various private and public schools.

Saloni and Tanvi Jaikamal are sisters, dancers, performers and dance instructors that have been dancing for as long as they can remember.

Carol Kelly has been teaching for two decades and enjoys spending time with students and having fun pursuing her many hobbies. Carol enjoys reading, quilting and cake baking in her down time.

Fred Kung is an area substitute teacher and chess master. He’s been sharing his love of the Royal Game to campers at Emerson for the past six summers.

Linda Lakshminarayanan has been Emerson School’s librarian since 2000. Her interests include storytelling and reading books of all kinds, sewing, and other crafty things.

Molly Lipton has been a PE and Health teacher for 11 years, basketball coach for nine years, and is currently the varsity women’s basketball assistant coach at Huron High School. Molly loves exercising and playing sports, and is excited to bring her passion and energy to our campers!

Sarah Longcore is the Lower School French teacher at Emerson School. She has her master’s degree in French from EMU, has lived in France, loves Monet, and visits Claude’s colorful garden in Normandy every year.

Carly Meloche is a graduate of Grand Valley State University and is thrilled to return for her fifth Summer at Emerson. She is delighted to continue to help the campers recognize their creativity and unique talents.

Tim Mummaw has enjoyed public speaking and storytelling for the last 35 years of his life. Children’s stories are his favorite and he is looking forward to sharing some of the best with you as you, too, will share yours with him.

Elsa Musko is a second grade teacher in South Lyon and an Emerson alum thrilled to be returning to where she once was a student and camper.

Amanda Patton is an Assistant Teacher in Queens, New York. She’s previously worked at Summer at Emerson and one of her favorite Emerson moments was being a guest storyteller in the fifth grade.

Bryan Seymour is the sixth grade Language Arts teacher at Emerson as well as the cross country and track coach. He has worked at summer camps for several years and loves reading, sports, and music.

Katie Seymour has been a Kindergarten teacher since 2006. She has always enjoyed working with children at camps during the summer and looks forward to another year at Emerson!

John Smalec is our veteran chess instructor, helping kids master the game for over 20 years at Emerson! He has coached Emerson students to many proud trophies and loves breaking down the games for new players.

Mike Wilson is a Lower School Science teacher at Emerson School. His interests include all things Steampunk, cartooning and baseball. Tabitha Yang is the Chinese teacher at Emerson School. She’s taught for many years and can’t wait to bring the excitement of Chinese culture to our summer campers.
