Mesa Verde National Park is a U.S. National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in

Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. It is the largest archaeological preserve in the

United States

By the year 750 the people were building mesa-top villages made of adobe. In the late 1190s

they began to build the cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is famous.

Mesa Verde is a World Cultural Heritage Park, a designation granted by UNESCO to preserve

and protect the cultural and national heritage of certain international sites.

Mesa Verde National Park covers 52,000 acres in southwestern Colorado. Its canyons were

created by erosion from receding ancient oceans and waterways, which resulted in Mesa Verde

National Park elevations ranging from about 6,000 to 8,572 feet (1,800 to 2,613 m), the highest

elevation at Park Point. The terrain in the park is now a transition zone between the low desert

plateaus and the Rocky Mountains.

An entry fee is charged for visiting the park. The fee is good for 7 days. Tour tickets are

required for ranger-guided tours of Cliff Palace, Balcony House, or Long House. Tour tickets

may be purchased at the Colorado Welcome Center in Cortez, or at the Visitor and Research

Center located at the park entrance. Be sure to stop at the Visitor Center before traveling into

the Park. It is 21 miles from the park entrance to the sites and museum on Chapin Mesa. Driving

time into the park depends on traffic and weather conditions. To truly appreciate the park and to

visit several of the cliff dwellings, please plan to spend two days at the park.
