An Evening with Stacy Hawkins Adams— Virginia Author Showcase

October 12, 2:00-4:00 pm. | The Hopewell/Prince George Friends of the Library invite you to spend an evening with Ms. Stacy Hawkins Adams. Ms. Adams is an award-winning women’s fiction and nonfiction author, freelance columnist for the Richmond Times Dispatch and inspirational speaker. The event is free and the Friends would love for you to come listen to Ms. Adams speak about her new book, “Lead me Home” and let her inspire and empower you.

An Evening with Beth Brown – Virginia Author Showcase

October 26, 2:00 – 3:00. | Beth Brown has authored several popular paranormal books based in Virginia. To celebrate the release of her new middle-grade novel “Underground”, Beth Brown presents this fun and interactive talk about unlikely heroes in books for young people and what makes them so appealing to adult readers. Attendees will join her in creating a one-of-a-kind story during the presentation by contributing one line each. The final story will be read at the conclusion of the talk. Come spend a fascinating evening with Beth Brown.

Timeless Memories: Commemorating the Personal Histories of World War II Veterans and their Families

November 9, 10:00 – 12:00 am. | The Appomattox Regional Library System welcomes you to come honor our Hopewell area veterans on Veterans Day weekend, by listening to the personal histories of their service to our country. This event will be comprised of a panel of local World War II veterans who will be there to narrate their experiences. Audience participation is appreciated and we encourage everybody to come and share their stories and personal memorabilia.

An Evening with Mary Theobald – Virginia Author Showcase

October 17, 6:00-7:30 pm. | Ms. Theobald is an eminent historian, who has taught at VCU, worked for the Williamsburg Historical Foundation and is a prolific author of almost 200 articles and nine nonfiction books. She will be here to discuss her latest nonfiction book, “First House: Two Centuries with Virginia’s First Families.” Everybody is welcome to come spend the evening with Ms. Theobald and be captivated by this unique perspective of Virginia history.

An Evening With Ellen Crosby – Virginia Author Showcase

November 21, 7:00-8:30 pm. | The Appomattox Regional Library System welcomes Ms. Ellen Crosby to the Dinwiddie Library. Ms. Crosby is the author of the popular Wine Country Mystery Series. She will be here to discuss her first book in a new series called Multiple Exposure featuring photojournalist Sophie Medina. Come listen to Ms. Crosby speak about her book which incorporates political intrigue, art history, and espionage. We have a thrilling evening in store for you!

BURROWSVILE LIBRARY December 6, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Holiday Open House The library is pleased to join the Friends of Burrowsville School in welcoming the season with square dancing and a holiday craft. Donations for the Prince George Food Bank requested.

DINWIDDIE LIBRARY December 3, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Grand Illumination Join the Dinwiddie Historical Society and the Dinwiddie Library for a tree lighting, music and light refreshments.

December 6, 2 - 6 p.m. Holiday Open House The Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie (FOLD) invite the public to enjoy refreshments and a children’s craft at the Dinwiddie Library.

Join us for these special classes for little ones up to age two. Story time aims to instill a love of reading by encouraging parents and other special adults to read aloud to children. Stories, rhymes, music and movement will help stimulate brain development and prepare kids for a lifelong excitement for books!

Fall Story Time Series | September 9 - December 13

Story time activities promote brain and language development for children from birth to age 5. At story time, children and caregivers are introduced to six early literacy skills that are essential for learning to read including print motivation, narrative skills, phonological awareness, vocabulary, letter knowledge, and print awareness.

During seasonal series, joins us at these ARLS locations:

A special offering for families not able to attend during the day.

Children gain confidence in reading by reading aloud to therapy dogs! Join clever canines handlers and therapy dogs for a fun way to practice reading skills! The program is for students in grades 2-4. Sign up for a 15 minute reading slot from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Registration Required.

Manga Mondays! At the Hopewell Library

Manga are Japanese comic books. Manga is often made into Japanese cartoons, or Anime. The art in Manga has a very unique look to it and is often referred to as “Manga Style.”

Bring your friends, favorite manga, and ideas to our new club! Discuss what’s hot in the world of Manga, create your own art and comics, and treat yourself to refreshments with other otaku!

1st Mondays at 3:30 p.m. in the Octagon, starting 10/7.

Tuesday afternoon movies at the Hopewell Library

2nd Tuesday of the month in the Octagon at 3:30 p.m., starting in October.

Movies rated PG or PG 13 and intended for a teen audience

Teen Volunteer Information Session Join us at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, October 5th at the Prince George Library for information on volunteer opportunities for teens. There will be an overview of volunteer guidelines as well as the various ways teens are able to help out at the library.

Red Cross Youth Leadership Meetings

American Red Cross Youth Leadership/Preparedness meeting for teens 13-17.

We will learn about a leadership topic, discuss how to get involved as a Red Cross youth volunteer, as well as learn about steps to prepare yourselves, and your community, in the event of an emergency or disaster.

The Hopewell/Prince George Friends and the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie invite you to join them as “Fun and Friend Rais-ers” for your local libraries. Share your love of books and reading. Join the Friends of the Library today! For more information, stop by your local branch or contact Jan Rowley by email at [email protected] or by phone at (804) 458-6329 extension 2001.

Membership fees are $10 per year or $50 for a lifetime membership in the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie. Basic membership fees for the Hopewell/PG Friends of the Library are $10 for an individual, $20 for a family, and $100 for a life membership.

The Board of the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie, meets at the Dinwiddie Library at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of February, May (general meeting), August and November. The Board of the Hopewell/Prince George Friends of the Library meets on the first Thursday of January, March, June and September at 6:30 p.m. General membership meetings are usually scheduled in April and October.

The Hopewell/PG Friends sponsor “Poetry, Prose, and Pizza” at the Prince George Library on a quarterly basis. The next event is scheduled for November 7 at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring original poetry or prose or a selection from a favorite poet to share. Nathan Richardson emcees this event in a family friendly atmosphere so come by, sign up to read, and enjoy a piece of pizza from co-sponsor, Luca Italian Restaurant, while discovering the talents of your neighbors.

And don’t forget to visit The Reader’s Friend Book Store at the Hopewell Library to find gently used books, cds and dvds. The Book Store is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and friendly volunteers will help you find an amazing read. Proceeds from the bookstore and the ongoing sales at libraries like Dinwiddie, Rohoic, Carson, and McKenney help support programming for adults and children throughout the Appomattox Regional Library System.
