‘Canterbury’s past is as rich as it comes’ says the latest Lonely Planet guide to Britain. This world-famous cathedral city was one of medieval Europe’s great places of pilgrimage and knowledge. Today, with its international visitors, college and three universities, it still has a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. Less than an hour from London, it’s in that corner of England that’s almost touching France. You may be in the city but you get a strong sense of being in the Garden of England too. There are riverside gardens and even a cider-making orchard within the city itself. Then there’s all the local produce in cafes, pubs and restaurants: Romney Marsh lamb, Kent cherries, ale from local hops, award-winning fizz from Kentish vineyards. To the north of the city is one of England’s largest ancient woodlands, the Blean. The countryside that embraces the cathedral city of Canterbury and laps the coastal towns of Whitstable and Herne Bay is ripe for exploration. A beguiling combination of rolling chalk downland, ancient woodland, river valleys, marshes and rugged coastline offers unparalleled opportunities to savour the very best of the Garden of England. Canterbury Travelling by foot is always a good way to explore the city. Walking trails or guided walks will help you make the most of your time here and to enjoy the winding lanes and streets, all with their own unique identity. Cycling is often the fastest way to get around in the city, it is also incredibly healthy and environmentally sustainable. Canterbury has numerous cycling routes, of which a large proportion are traffic free. Walking and cycling aren’t just rewarding and fun ways to get around the city; leaving the car at home for some trips will save you money and reduce emissions. It also allows you to be active as part of your daily routine, helping you to stay fit and healthy. Take a close look at the map and see how easy it is to walk or cycle from your home to the station, school, or city centre. Canterbury is also well connected by two mainline train stations and bus routes. Download the Kent Connected mobile app or go to kentconnected.org to help plan your journey. View local cycling and walking routes, bus and train times and all other information on travelling in Kent. PARK AND PEDAL Store your own bike in a secure compound at Park and Ride Wincheap and beat the traffic by cycling the last mile into town. There’s both a signed on-road and a traffic free off-road route to follow.
