Challenge and imperative
How to make productive use of e-Learning support in future teachers’ education?
• what is ...... e-Learning?• what is ...... productive support?• how does .... e-Learning fit into teachers’
eduction?
2/17
What is e-Learning?
Many forms and interpretations, many concepts and approaches
• computer assisted learning, CAL• computer-based training, CBT• web-based learning, WBL• web-based training, WBT• blended learning• on-line learning• open and distance learning, ODL• computer supported collaborative learning,
CSCL• learning management system, LMS

We will distinguish 3 stagesof e-Learning• e-Learning support• blended learning• on-line lerning
4/17
What is ... productive support?• be more attractive, more efficient,• be modern, appropriate for 21st century,
corresponding to expectations and needs of the “digital world”
5/17
How does e-Learning fit into teachers’ education?
...into which teaching forms? How?• (traditional) lecture,• Illustrative lecture with
interactions,• practice,• seminar,• workshop
Building “metric system”Our goal is to build a system for characterizing ... Identify different perspectives, indicators, values

Characterizing each teaching formwithin our “metric system”(system of perspectives, indicators and values)Example (observe different “spaces for opportunities”):

Matching forms against forms…
Let us match (overlay) each teaching form against each form of e-Learning
Example: illustrative lecture with interactions + on-line form
12/17
Interesting Findings 1/3
13/17
• integrating any form of e-Learning into traditional lecture is not possible,
• => transform traditional lecture intoillustrative lecture with interactions,
• blended learning can be easily integrated into any teaching form except traditional lecture
Interesting Findings 2/3
14/17
on-line + illustrative lecturewith interactions
on-line + practice
How to integrate on-line learning…
Interesting Findings 3/3
15/17
• the most productive match results from applying on-line learning with seminars (the largest space of opportunities)
on-line + semimar on-line + workshop
Conclusion
• no exact answers to the hazy questions,• this approach helps us identify productive
and critical indicators for integration,• it helps us to rethink future teachers
education.
When we talk about computers in education, we should not think about a machine having an effect. We should be talking about the opportunity offered us, by this computer presence, to rethink what learning is all
about, to rethink education.S. Papert 1987, Sofia
