FROM THE EDITOR: We encourage your participation in the Lifeline by sending in jokes, cartoons, or articles as well as your com-ments or suggestions. Please also consider joining the Lifeline committee. We only meet one Monday a month. Please contact me at [email protected] if you’d like more information on how you can participate.

Purpose: The Orange County Life-

line Committee is a committee of

A.A. members, charged with the

responsibility of producing and dis-

tributing the Orange County Lifeline,

(a publication of the Orange County

Intergroup Association). The Lifeline

is published monthly and is support-

ed solely through contributions from

the A.A. groups and members of

Orange County. The Lifeline is pub-

lished to meet the following needs

of the Orange County A.A. member-

ship: to inform the A.A. member-

ship regarding A.A. service, events

and announcements; also to share

experience in recovery, unity and

service; to keep the A.A. member-

ship informed regarding the ac-

tions, finances and meetings of the

Orange County Intergroup Associa-

tion and other Central Office com-

mittees.

Acceptance is about what IS, not about what ISN’T.

was only 28 yrs. old but I was the

exception at that time. Meetings

were much smaller since there was

no rehab facilities intervening in

the alcoholic’s drinking escapades

so they didn’t start hitting their

bottom till their forties or fifties

and I sometimes think it had

something to do with midlife cri-

sis, or was that just a coincidence.

What I do see that is different

from my experience, for the most

part, is the blurred line when

comes to the first requirement for

A.A.

mem-

bership:

“a de-

sire to

stop

drink-

ing”. If

some Judge or employer told me

that I had to stop drinking, consid-

ering the relief I got from the bot-

tle, I doubt that I would have been

nearly as receptive to getting so-

ber, and if I had, I’m sure I would

have relapses as much as any of

those who, unfortunately, struggle

with staying sober. It appears that

many of the A.A. members of to-

day see a high percentage of re-

lapses and they attribute that as an

abysmal success ratio in A.A. but

they assume that just because they

were sent to A.A. from a rehab

facility that they should be lumped

in with those, like me, who had a

desire to stop drinking and came

in looking for answers. These re-

UNDERSTANDING

STEP ONE

I wish I could say that everyone that

enters the doors of Alcoholics Anony-

mous has an equal shot at getting so-

ber and staying that way for the rest

of their lives but, depending on the

different reasons why each individual

decides to give A.A. a chance, cou-

pled with the degree of desperation

that caused that person to delve into

what

the

pro-

gram

has to

offer,

we

get a

varie-

ty of different results. When I arrived

at my first A.A. meeting I was desper-

ately looking for, what I thought was

a solution to an impossible situation. I

was defeated and absolutely demoral-

ized. Within minutes of being ex-

posed to the sober members of that

group I was convinced that I had

found the solution to my hopeless

condition and the desire to drink was

removed from me on the spot and has

never returned. That was on Oct. 15,

1969. I wish every new member could

have that type of experience, but we

know that many of us aren’t that re-

ceptive in the beginning.

Most of the members of that early

group were over forty years old and I

He then had difficulty in every as-

pect of his life. His service in the

Navy was marred when he was giv-

en a “Captain's Mast,” i.e., discipline

for trouble he got into while drink-

ing. His marriage suffered, his val-

ues became distorted, and by 40 his

health was severely damaged.

When the doctor told him he would

have to stop drinking he did, for ten

months, with no apparent difficulty,

but he did not enjoy life without

drinking, and soon he was drinking

again and his physical condition

deteriorated further.

He developed cirrhosis of the liver,

had frequent blackouts, severe nose-

bleeds, angry bruises which ap-

peared mysteriously all over his

body. Despite three episodes of los-

ing large quantities of blood by

vomiting and from his rectum, he

drank again.

His doctor finally gave up on him

and referred him to a psychiatrist in

the same suite of offices. “He hap-

pened to be, by the grace of God,”

Bob wrote, “Dr. Harry Tiebout, the

psychiatrist who probably knew

more about alcoholism than any

other in the world.” At that time Dr.

Tiebout was serving as a nonalco-

holic trustee on the General Service

Board.

Dr. Tiebout sent him to High Watch

to dry out. There he read the Big

Book and began his slow road back

to health and sanity.

A.A. Taught Him

To Handle Sobriety Bob P., Connecticut,

“God willing, we may never again

have to deal with drinking, but we

have to deal with sobriety every day.”

Bob joined A.A. in New York City in

1961, probably never dreaming one

day he would be the manager of A.A.'s

General Service Office.

Bob was born in Houston, Texas, but

raised in Kansas, the only child of lov-

ing parents. His parents drank only

socially, and his father gave him his

first drink -- a tiny glass of sherry to

celebrate the New York -- when he

was thirteen. He immediately saw the

effect it had on him and prayed he

wouldn't drink any more. But in col-

lege he began to drink at fraternity

parties and beer busts.

The family moved frequently and Bob

found himself in a different school

every year until high school, where he

was always the new kid who had to

prove himself. He retreated into a fan-

tasy world. He became the classic over

-achiever and sold his first article to a

national magazine while still an under-

graduate.

After graduation from college he

moved to New York to pursue a writ-

ing career and landed a good job. He

was soon regarded as a “boy wonder.”

But by age 22 he was a daily drinker.

closing talk” titled “Our greatest

danger: rigidity.”

He said: “If you were to ask me what

is the greatest danger facing A.A.

today, I would have to answer the

growing rigidity - the increasing

demand for absolute answers to nit-

picking questions; pressure for

G.S.O. to ‘enforce’ our Traditions,

screening alcoholics at closed meet-

ings, prohibiting non-Conference

approved literature, i.e., ‘banning

books,’ laying more and more rules

on groups and members. And in this

trend toward rigidity, we are drifting

farther and farther away from our co

-founders. Bill, in particular, must be

spinning in his grave, for he was

perhaps the most permissive person I

ever met. One of his favorite sayings

was ‘Every group has the right to be

wrong.’”

Bob continues to give his service to

A.A. in many ways. At the Interna-

tional Convention in Minneapolis in

2000, he appeared to be handling

many jobs. He filled in to lead at

least one of the small meetings,

“Pioneers in A.A.” The program

does not list him as the Moderator.

He was probably filling in for some-

one else at the last minute.

The short biographies of the

various authors of the stories in

the back of the book Alcoholics

Anonymous have been gracious-

ly supplied by Nancy O., the

moderator of the AA History

Lovers list and her friends.

short time, an oldtimer told him that

A.A. does not teach us how to handle

our drinking, but it teaches us how to

handle sobriety.

Not only did his health recover, so did

his marriage, his relationship with his

children, his performance on his job.

All these things A.A. gave him, but

most of all it taught him how to handle

sobriety, how to relate to people, how

to deal with disappointments and prob-

lems. He learned that “the name of the

game is not so much to stop drinking

as to stay sober.”

“God willing, we members of Alcohol-

ics Anonymous may never again have

to deal with drinking, but we have to

deal with sobriety every day. How do

we do it? By learning -- through prac-

ticing the Twelve Steps and through

sharing at meetings -- how to cope with

the problems that we looked to booze

to solve, back in our drinking days.”

Bob has served A.A. in many ways. He

worked for G.S.O. for 12 ½. He was a

director and trustee of the General Ser-

vice Board for six years and office

general manager for a decade. Upon

retirement from G.S.O. in 1986, he

took on the task for G.S.O. of writing

an update of A.A.'s history covering

the period from the publication of

“Alcoholics Anonymous Comes to

Age,” through its 50th year. Unfortu-

nately, this manuscript was never pub-

lished.

At the 1986 General Service Confer-

ence, Bob gave what the 1986 Final

Report called “a powerful and inspiring

MORNING PRAYER God direct my thinking today so that it

be divorced of self-pity, dishonesty,

self-will, self-seeking and fear. God

inspire my thinking, decisions and

intuitions. Help me to relax and take it

easy. Free me from doubt and indeci-

sion. Guide me through this day and

show me my next step. God give me

what I need to take care of any prob-

lems. I ask all these things that I may

be of maximum service to you and my

fellow man in the name of the Steps I

pray. AMEN

A.A. MORNINGS

On awakening let us think about

the twenty-four hours ahead. We

consider our plans for the day. Before

we begin, we ask God to direct our

thinking, especially asking that it be

divorced from self-pity, dishonest or

self-seeking motives. Under these con-

ditions we can employ our mental

faculties with assurance, for after all

God gave us brains to use. Our

thought-life will be placed on a much

higher plane when our thinking is

cleared of wrong motives.

In thinking about our day we may face

indecision. We may not be able to

determine which course to take. Here

we ask God for inspiration, an intui-

tive thought or a decision. We relax

and take it easy. We don’t struggle.

We are often surprised how the right

answers come after we have tried this

for a while.

NIGHT PRAYER God forgive me where I have been

resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid

today. Help me to not keep anything

to myself but to discuss it all openly

with another person - show me

where I owe an apology and help me

make it. Help me to be kind and lov-

ing to all people. Use me in the

mainstream of life God. Remove

worry, remorse or morbid (sick)

reflections that I may be of useful-

ness to others. AMEN

A.A .NIGHTS When we retire at night, we con-

structively review our day. Were we

resentful, selfish, dishonest or

afraid? Do we owe an apology?

Have we kept something to our-

selves which should be discussed

with another person at once? Were

we kind and loving toward all?

What could we have done better?

Were we thinking of ourselves

most of the time? Or were we

thinking of what we could do for

others, of what we could pack into

the stream of life? But we must be

careful not to drift into worry, re-

morse or morbid reflection, for that

would diminish our usefulness to

others. After making our review

we ask God's forgiveness and in-

quire what corrective measures

should be taken.

lapses are the natural result when

the desire to drink is stronger than

the desire to stay sober.

In the Foreword to the second edi-

tion of the Big Book it says: Of

alcoholics who came to A.A. and

really tried, 50% got sober at once

and remained that way: 25% so-

bered up after some relapses. I of-

ten ask a newcomer what caused

them to give A.A. a visit and most

of them say that the main reasons

were DUI’s, Work related require-

ments, and spouses ultimatums.

Occasionally someone says, I just

ran out of ideas and I need help.

The later is usually the one in ten

that stays sober without relapse.

I also believe that if you counted

only the ones that came in search-

ing for answers, the same ratio as in

the foreword to the Big Book

would still apply. Seventy five per-

cent is not bad. The good news is

that many of the members that are

here as the result of intervention

or other motivations often become

what they refer to as the

“educational variety” often get

sober years before they would

have had they not been intervened

upon. We treat these brothers and

sisters with empathy, compassion

and understanding. The awareness

in the community has taken away

much of the stigma (not all) of

being cursed with the disease of

alcoholism and where we had

meetings totaling ten or twelve

members we now have twenty to

forty members attending. Some-

times the fruit is picked before it’s

ripe, but we never discard it.
