EXPECTATIONS FOR ANYONE INVOLVED
The following is a list of expectations and requirements that the students, parents, and sponsors are
asked to fulfill in order for the sacraments of the student to be received. All of these requirements are
put in place for the long lasting benefit of the person receiving the sacraments. If ever you, your child,
or your child’s sponsor ever has trouble fulfilling these requirements, please see the Coordinator of
Religious Education to see if any exceptions can be made.
Saint Joan of Arc (SJA) and the Catholic Church NEVER deny anyone the opportunity to receive their
sacraments. But since there are standards that a person needs to meet in order to be Catholic, be
ready for the sacraments, and complete the program here at SJA, we do sometimes DELAY the
reception of the sacraments for a certain person if they do not meet these standards. There is no rule
that sacramental preparation is limited to any period of time or that any person deserves the
sacraments for any tasks completed. To be clear:
NO ONE IS GUARUNTEED TO RECEIVE THE SACRAMENTS BECAUSE THEY HAVE COMPLETED THE
PROGRAM. THE STUDENTS COULD BE REQUIRED TO REPEAT THE YEAR IN THEIR PROGRAM. THIS IS
VERY COMMON.
The rest of this list will give you the standards that we use to help us decide if a person is ready to
receive their sacraments. These requirements apply to anyone who fit the description of the person in
that category whether that be student, parent/guardian, or sponsor.
Failure to meet these requirements could result in delaying these student’s sacraments even if it is
the parent or sponsor who has failed to meet the requirements.
There are exceptions for those with special needs or those in special situations, but these must be
discussed with the Coordinator of Religious education as soon as possible or at least prior to the
interview in April.
EVERYONE INVOLVED IN A STUDENT RECEVING THE SACRAMENTS MUST:
Follow the 5 precepts of the church (in the Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraph 2042-3)
o You shall attend mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor
o You shall confess your sins at least once a year
o You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season
o You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the church.
I.e. Good Friday, Ash Wednesday, and abstaining from meat on Fridays in Lent.
o You shall help to provide for the needs of the church.
Be pursuing a life of holiness in accordance with the catholic church
o You must have a desire for God and to know Him more.
o You must believe in all of the teachings of the church and not just some.
o You must do your best to live according to these teachings.
o If mistaken about a teaching of the church, once the mistake has been clarified, you must
follow the true teachings of the church.

El incumplimiento de estos requisitos podría retrasar los sacramentos de estos estudiantes, incluso si
es el padre o padrino el que no ha cumplido con los requisitos.
Hay excepciones para aquellos con necesidades especiales o en situaciones especiales, pero estas

EXPECTATION OF THE STUDENTS
According to the Catholic Church, any person over the age of reason is considered an adult who is
able to make their own choices, so some of the standards reflect this view. So along with the
requirements above for every person, in order for them to receive the sacraments…
ALL STUDENTS MUST: o Be of the age of reason
o Have evidence of a love for Jesus and a desire for a personal relationship with Him
o Have evidence of a personal desire for the sacraments (they cannot only want them because their
parent or guardian or culture wants them to receive.)
o Have a basic knowledge of the faith and the sacraments they are receiving.
o Attend Youth group. (High school only)
o Attend two years’ worth of sacramental preparation classes or more.
o Attend every class and arrive on time. (more information in “Additional Information”)
o Participate in class
o Show proof of the sacraments they have received.
o Provide a birth certificate
o Be registered at a parish.
o Go to mass every Sunday AND holy day of obligation, and get the mass passport stamped for every
week.
o Have any required documents turned in on time
o Attend one retreat per year (except RCIA)
o Pass the final interview and test
YEAR 1 (RECONCILIATION) o Meet all of the other expectations
o Know all basic prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Act of Contrition)
o Know the Ten Commandments.
YEAR 2 (CONFIRMATION AND 1ST COMMUNION) o Meet all of the other expectations including those from Year 1.
o Know the Nicene Creed.
o Know the gifts of the Holy spirit
o Do service hours (ages 7-11 must do 8 service hours and ages 12 and up must do 10)
o Pick a Saint name
RCIA o Meet all of the above requirements over a 2 year period.
o Go through all of the necessary rites.
o Be a Catechumen for one liturgical year before reception of Baptism (this happens after the rite of
acceptance)
o Once a catechumen, attend 10:30 mass and participate in the dismissal processes.

EXPECTATION OF THE PARENTS **
Although the students are seen as adults in the eyes of the Church, there are many factors that
compel us to help bolster the Faith the parents as well. Firstly, it is clear that the church desires the
Faith and the reception of the sacraments to be a family effort insofar as it is possible. Secondly, most
of the students come to class, not because they desire the sacraments themselves or even know what
they are, but because their parents bring them. Thirdly, parents often expect that it is the task of the
Church, Priests, or Catechists alone to teach and pass on the Faith, when in reality it is PRIMARILY the
duty of the parent to pass on the Faith. Several of the parents, because of no fault of their own, never
learned the basics of the Faith sufficiently to live it out fully or to know how to pass it down to their
children. For these reasons we have put measures in place to help parents do this for their children
until they leave the home. Therefore, along with the requirements delineated above for every person
involved, in order for the student to receive the sacraments …
ALL PARENTS MUST:
Register at a parish (we prefer that you register at SJA if you are not registered.) *
Put your parish envelopes in the basket every Sunday (and HDO), or as much as you go to SJA. *
Sign in and Sign out your children at every class day. (more information in “Additional Information”)
Help your children learn their prayers and test questions.
Take your children to mass
Take a parent class – One person in each family must take one parent class for one year. No more
than that is required.
Go on a Parents’ retreat
Go to mass *
Make sure that all of your student’s documents and your student’s sponsor’s documents are
turned in on time.
o All documents required are mentioned in the sponsor expectation portion.
Make sure that your students sponsor is a person who can fulfill all of the expectations below.
I add as strongly suggested.
Go to confession – besides the above requirements explained under the 5 precepts of the Church
it is recommended that a person goes to confession at least once every month or two, so it is
important that you show your children that this is important. *
* These are not required if you are not Catholic, do not believe in the Faith, or otherwise do not
associate fully with the Catholic Church. In the event that this is so, it is important for you to find a
Sponsor who will most likely be with your family for the child’s life time, and who can help raise the
child in their faith.
** If a student inquires on their own to receive the sacraments, the only requirements are that they
obtain their own documents and the documents of their sponsors. We will gladly help them
accomplish these tasks.

EXPECTATION OF THE SPONSORS
“A sponsor … helps the … person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully
the obligations inherent in it.” “The sponsor is to take care that the confirmed person behaves as a
true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations inherent in” the sacrament of confirmation.
(Canon Law)
All Sponsors must:
Be designated by the one to be baptized, by the parents or the person who takes their place, or in
their absence by the pastor or minister and have the aptitude and intention of fulfilling this
function.
Be at least 16 years old
Be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the Most Holy Sacrament of the
Eucharist and who lead a life of Faith in keeping with the function to be taken on.
Not be the natural or adopted parents of the person being confirmed
Turn in all paperwork required by SJA
o We prefer a NEW baptismal certificate with the notations of all the other sacraments
received. OR All of the certificates for the sacraments of initiation.
o Sacramental Marriage certificate if married.
o Sponsor information form.
o Letter of Good standing if they are not members of SJA
Be registered at a parish
o A person must register under their own number if any of the following are true
They graduated from high school and have their own job and are not attending
college.
They go to college out of town or away from home
They have moved out, are married, or have children of their own.
Attend a sponsor retreat.
Be a married in a Catholic sacramental marriage, IF they are married.
Be living a chaste life according to the Catholic Church, if they are not married.
Not be remarried if divorced from a Catholic Sacramental Marriage, unless all previous marriages
have been annulled.
A sponsor should be faithful Catholic who walks with the candidate as witness and guide. Ideally they
should be the candidate’s godparent. This practice supports the connection between Baptism and
Confirmation. They should display maturity for this role and willingness to witness faith to the
candidate.
It is recommended that someone nearby be chosen as the sponsor (i.e. it is not recommended to pick
sponsors who live out of town). Sponsors are to support their candidate during the preparation
process through prayer, words of encouragement and attendance when required and are to present
the candidates to the bishop for anointing.

Registrarse en una parroquia

Pastor’s Explanation of the Purpose of Letters of Good Standing
I often receive requests to sign a statement that a certain individual is a practicing Catholic and
eligible to serve as a godparent, Confirmation sponsor, or RCIA sponsor. This is sometimes referred to
as a LETTER OF GOOD STANDING. What I sometimes notice is that the person who requests my
signature:
1. Has not registered in the parish, 2. Has no record of any involvement in the parish, 3. Has no record of attending Mass, 4. Has moved to another area or has just arrived from another area and has no record of being
involved either here or there.
This makes it very difficult for me to sign my name to something that I am not sure is true. Therefore,
please take note of the following guidelines for requests that you may make in this regard.
If you want to be considered a parishioner of our parish and would like validation of this from the
parish office, we need you to please:
1. Register as a parishioner. 2. Become involved in some parish activity or ministry, if you are not already involved. 3. Fulfill your obligation to participate at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and either
use your envelope or a check that allows us to track your attendance (this is not to see how much you give, but that you attend).
4. If you are an adult child of parents in the parish, register yourself here or wherever you attend Mass.
5. If you come from another parish and would like us to offer a Letter of Good Standing for you, please bring some statement from your previous parish that you are a practicing parishioner there.
6. Finally, if you move, notify us that you have moved and register in the parish of the new location.
THE PURPOSE OF a LETTER OF GOOD STANDING is to letter assure the parish seeking it that the
person recommended to it is serious about his or her Catholic faith and will share that faith with the
one to be baptized or confirmed. We value the example and commitment of godparents and
sponsors, and I cannot do this with honesty if we do not have the knowledge that a person believes
and practices their faith.
Finally, please note our parish registrations are to be used only by our parish and our diocese. In no
way do we share the information you gave us with the government or any outside organization.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Attendance Policy The Office of Religious Education (RE) considers punctuality an integral dimension of the proper formation of your children. Arriving late to class disrupts the class and causes the student to fall behind in their formation. For these reasons, the following policies were written:
A legal guardian will sign a child in and out of class each time.
A student is considered late when he arrives more than 10 minutes after start time
A student is marked absent if he is more than 20 minutes late
3 unexcused absences for the program year will result in a non-reception of the sacraments and/or failure to advance to the next level.
Excused/Unexcused Absences Emergencies and sudden life issues are considered excused absences. Any other reason is counted as an unexcused absence. Parents’ work schedule, student’s sports or other extracurricular events, student’s study schedule, lack of transportation, family or school vacations are examples of unexcused absences. You must call the Office of Religious Education to report an absence in order for it to be excused. 602-867-9171 X309 Your child may be given homework and will be expected to complete the assignments. If your child comes to class unprepared, he/she may be marked absent. If you have questions regarding your child’s assignment, do not hesitate to call the Office of Religious Education. In order to better assist you in properly forming your child in our Catholic faith, catechists will expect your child to memorize certain truths, with the hope that they will, over time, come to a deeper understanding of those truths now rooted deep within them. Therefore, if your child does not take the learning process seriously and does poorly on their assessments and in their interview, they may be deemed improperly disposed to receive the sacraments and could be asked to defer a year. This should not at all be seen as a punishment, but merely as a possible indication of the child’s level of maturity and overall conversion.
