Design BarnWe have recently invested in, designed and launched a 15,000 sq.ft sustainable and independent Open Innovation facility SPREAD DESIGN BARN design with enterprise, government, start-ups, policy bodies, educational institutions to work together/ learn together on how to leverage design as a strategic imperative for customer experience, innovation, transformation and growth.

The Design of SpreadDesign FarmSo, where do we work? We work at the SPREAD DESIGN FARM, a green campus with traditional mandala architecture, home to over a 100 trees, natural rainwater harvesting, a 15 megawatt solar power plant that has us completely off the grid and fruit and vegetables farm, supplying fresh farm food to 40 (including support staff) co-workers every day.

Expertise / ExperienceThe team at SPREAD has had a great deal of experience in emergent domains in India like Retail, Education, Healthcare, Hospitality and in the business of brands. The team is credited to have played a significant role in creating over 10 million sq.ft of retail for the Future Group in India. Besides they have created brand Manipal and are associated with this Education and Medical Group for the last two decades.

While the promoters of SPREAD have been closely associated with large scale Government projects like Commonwealth Games, Cochin International Airport (CIAL) and Kochi Metro, recently SPREAD has been assigned transformational projects for Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, and the State Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development, Urban Development, IT&BT ministries in the Government of Karnataka.

The TeamThe promoters of SPREAD, Sonia Manchanda, Mohammad Javed and Girish Raj have spent over two decades in Creative businesses in India, first in advertising and then design. While Sonia has had short stints in advertising at Contract Advertising, Mudra, Girish has worked for about 20 years in Contract Advertising & McCann Erickson while Javed has spent over a decade with McCann Erickson. Together Sonia & Girish were co-founders of Idiom Design and Consulting, India’s first homegrown multidisciplinary design firm, where Javed was the Chief Executive Officer. They ran Idiom for about 10 years, just before they founded Spread.

At SPREAD, they work closely with a leadership team made up of Rajeshwari Math (A graphic designer, leading the Learning / Training vertical), Sridhar Chakravarthy (An architect, leading the Experience Design vertical), Ekta Manchanda (A graphic designer, leading the Business / Brand Design vertical). This core leadership team are associate partners and have worked together with the promoters for over 13 years. This team is augmented by Debjyoti Roy (Interaction Lead), Sreeraj (New Media Lead) and Manya (Education/Training Lead) which together make up the five revenue verticals at SPREAD.

The various verticals are supported by a ten member design team, compromising graphic, product, interaction and new media designers, a five member studio, and a five member design/operations management/ production Team.

Projects / Services We possibly have one of the most diverse portfolio of work for a design firm in India. From physical retail experiences, to digital retail, to interaction design for a global Tourism, Travel and Travel related App. From experiential museums to interaction design for an e-learning portal. Plus the design of 100’s of brands in FMCG, Retail, Education, Healthcare and Hospitality.

But what has recently got us a lot of recognition is the work we have been doing for National Highways to become user friendly and the project to position Organics and Millets as next generation SMART food, for the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Karnataka.

In the Indian Design Sector, the Government has emerged as one of the key spenders, seeking long term social and behavioural transformation in various sectors. This coupled with Demonetisation and GST has lowered Private sector spending in Design. Hence 70% of our revenues come from the Government.

XIX COMMONWEALTH GAMES DELHI 2010

The Ashoka Chakra spirals out.

With a vision to present Delhi as a truly global city at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the first major sporting event in Asia after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Looking at the architecture, art forms, historical monuments and culture of the national capital, while retaining an international language, we created the brand identity for CWG inspired by India’s National symbol, the Ashok Chakra, which represents a combination of inclusiveness, freedom, unity and power.

THE SIGNATURE ELEMENT IS A REPRESENTATION OF THE LOGO, A DYNAMIC AND ENERGETIC FORM THAT ALLOWS FOR GREAT FLEXIBILITY OF USAGE FOR THE GAMES LOOK ACROSS VARIOUS FORMATS, WITHOUT TAMPERING WITH THE LOGO.

The Bird of Gold, a cultural symbol of prosperity, soars, yet again!

We designed the hand to take flight and transform into the ‘Soney ki Chidiya’. Creation, branding and experience of Big Bazaar, Central, Hometown, Foodhall, Food bazaar, Brand Factory, their various malls, Pantaloons brand and experience, Refresh, covering over 10 million sq.ft of retail space have been conceived, physically designed and prototyped by us.

We have led the effort in designing most constituents of the brand, sub brands, the retail brands and formats and experiences, besides the offices and culture of Future Group.

Once, India was the ‘Soney ki Chidiya’. A land and people held in awe.For her prosperity. For her intellect. For her culture. Today the world looks towards India again

COCHIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The world’s first GREENPORT

Inspired by the progressive culture of Kerala, its love of nature and simplicity, community and culture and synergy with the ethos of CIAL, we brought together ideas in Green Thinking and Green Design to go beyond the idea of a Green Airport; to form India’s first truly Eco-Airport, India’s GreenPort.

We created a brand Identity that touches a chord with every local resident, travelling or residing internationally. It reminds them of home and brings back memories of their childhood. The identity resonated globally on the day of its launch.

A feature film, showcasing Karnataka’s millet and organic bounty and a call film, featuring the Minister for Agriculture, Govt. of Karnataka, ushering the world to join the event were made.

For run up events, the communication and design language was followed consistently.

To spread the word to the people of the state and the world, we designed a Millet and Organic bouquet. Millet heroes were identified, photographed and filmed to create communication that would spread the buzz both online and in print.

ORGANICS & MILLETS 2018 INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR

Celebrating Karnataka as the hub of Next Gen Smart foods, the Dept of Agriculture, Govt of Karnataka organised the ‘Organics & Millets 2018 International Trade Fair’, between January 19th-21st at Bengaluru Palace. As design partners, we created the communication and design for the mega event.

Prior to the event, the brochure and poster were created. A series of hashtags were created to spread the word.

With Highways India we have conceptualized and designed a unique identity for Indian National Highways which would become a greeting, and a number of people friendly initiatives, transforming India’s road network from a service to an experience.

Skoodle’s brief required us to modernise the aging mobile application UI with a vibrant and joyful visual update. We were tasked to expand upon the color palette and typography and use these elements to design their application, website, presentations, and brochures.

The Spread ModelWord of mouth and referrals have been our single largest source of new business and most of out engagements are designed to influence this word of mouth engine.

This also works as a point of differentiation. Firstly a lean and agile set up including investment in technology resources and a diverse talent pool allows us to turnaround complex design projects relatively faster. Coupled with this is a model of ‘insourcing’ which allows us to make films, Animation, AR VR experiences, High end visualization, Walkthroughs and simulate design mush faster than most design companies.

However, what really tips the scales in our favour is our strategic competencies, cross-disciplinary knowledge base, immersive design research, our ability to apply design thinking (we have a developed our own model called Design Sense) and transform them to design outcomes/ customer experiences. Behind Spread Sonia Manchanda Founding Partner

Sonia is Founding Partner at SPREAD Design and Learning where she where she leads massive transformational projects at the intersection of Design, Technology and Learning; addressing complex problems and expanding possibilities. She cofounded the most vibrant and largest design firm in India that literally created modern retail in the country and several big educational and other industry brands, created an open innovation and design thinking project DREAM:IN that became a global movement, was awarded as a gamechanger and celebrated by Bruce Nussbaum in his seminal book Creative Intelligence. SPREAD is based at her Design Farm and is anchoring transformational projects like a large initiative by Nasscom and Facebook, to spread design in India; people friendly design for Indian Highways and design partner of the IT BT department of Karnataka for its most important conference. Sonia is a Governing Council member of Forge, an incubator in Coimbatore, she is also a member on the CII National Design Committee.

Girish Raj Nair Founding Partner

A design strategist and analyst, Girish has always nurtured a keen desire to watch and observe, learn yet remain detached, with over 20+ years of experience in Advertising, analysis of markets, consumers, brands, creatives and media. He graduated in English Literature, followed by a Post-Graduation in Business Management. The desire to observe and learn edged Girish into the world analysis. Always the quintessential outlier, he prefers to be on the fringes of things, than in the thick of it.

Mohammad Javed Managing Partner

Javed has over 25 years of corporate experience, having held various positions at the senior management level as a Finance and Management professional. He started his professional career working with reputed Chartered Accountancy firms in Delhi for a few years. He worked with McCann Erickson India as Vice Pesident, Finance before joining Idiom Design & Consulting. During his tenure in the world of advertising he has taken up various mantles, from managing clients to implementing/guiding financial and internal controls including the reporting systems in the international advertising network.

Raji Math Principal Designer

Raji is a design thinker and leader who has led experience, business and brand design projects for 18 + years. She started as a communication and graphic designer with a BFA degree from College of Arts, Chandigarh. Time and experience have given her the opportunity to be engaged in or lead design on most projects, besides bringing a strategic design approach to transform ideas into new ventures. She has worked with interdisciplinary teams, ensuring that design thinking and design get integrated into every touchpoint to create an impact. She now works with Spread Learning, to co-create solutions with organizations, harnessing the power of design thinking to navigate complex challenges.

Sridhar Chakravarthy Principal Designer

Graduated from Malnad college of engineering [Mysore university]in 1991 in Architecture and is currently principal designer/Architect at Spread design and innovation. Sridhar chakravarthy has been involved in allied design practice like cost effective housing projects,modern bespoke furniture design and prototyping,,exhibition design to integration of technology to spatial experiences! Worked across Industry sectors like healthcare,banking,FMCG,exhibitions,retail and state government projects. Ekta Manchanda Principal Designer

A Design Graduate from Srishti School of art design and technology, Ekta Manchanda is now a principal designer at Spread. Her college project won her notice, which included a sponsorship by the french embassy to represent Indian Design in St Etienne Biennale. She has practised graphic design since, for the last 12 years with expertise in brand design and publication. She now leads a team at Spread Design to do large scale branding projects which create impact at a business and strategic level. Her expertise and experience lies in retail, education and hospitality sector. Ekta has worked as a principal designer for numerous national and international projects including rebranding of Sterling holiday resorts and rebranding of Nilgiris super market chain. She is able to guide multiple projects and work across teams to create an end to end process of successful project delivery.

Debojyoti Roy Creatve Lead

Debojyoti Roy is in an Interaction Designer at Spread. He uses research-driven data to create compelling and effective interaction design solutions that provide fulfilling experiences to his users. He designs for a vast array of platforms including the web, mobile devices, games, architecture, kiosks, interactive displays etc. He has worked on the mobile and web interfaces for brands such as AQT, Entrar, Stayology, Edunxt, Ufolio, Ashirvad Pipes, Pana, Zeven, Pynme and Design4india. He has previously worked with Idiom design and consulting to design the brand language and bus graphics currently used by BMTC.

Sreeraj Creatve Lead

Sreeraj heads the Film and New Media department at the Spread Design. A Product Designer by profession, he has been a photographer & filmmaker since the age of 18. Apart from practising the craft, he was also an assistant faculty for Photography & Product Design at NICC, a design college in Bangalore. His experience with various verticals of design & filmmaking makes him a holistic asset in the design process. Sreeraj brings to the table an all-round capability and outlook to the design process. He holds a BSc. in Visual Communication from GRD College, Coimbatore and an International Post-Graduate Diploma in Lifestyle Product Design from NICC, Bangalore.

Manya Creative Lead

Manya heads Community & Programs at the Design Barn, India’s first Integrated Design Center. She also delivers workshops in User Experience design for designers, techies, startup leaders, and aspiring UX professionals. She has anchored the development of the User Experience & Interaction Design Program on Manipal ProLearn. Previously an entrepreneur, she aims to make business more human-centric through design. She previously co-founded DoctorC, a health-tech startup that makes getting diagnostic tests simple, affordable, and convenient Given her experience with her startup, consulting firms, and arts organisations, Manya brings to the table a keen business sense and a good mix of strategy and creativity. Manya holds a dual degree in Business and Arts and Design Thinking from the University of Virginia.
