“What is Existentialism ?”
Existentialism is a philosophy which stresses the importance of human experience , and says that everyone is responsible for the result of their own action.
Hemingway As Existentialist
• Hemingway is existentially empty and directionless , without family and without distention
• Existentialism and Nihilism the twin philosophy systems that influenced Hemingway ‘s writing
• Hemingway’s Existential themes also appear in his African stories

• As per my point of view existentialism is important part of Santiago’s life
• It is also suggest existential struggle within storyline
Existentialism in the novel
• Here Existence of man is understood as a part of nature
• The man struggle is repetitive
• In the fishing episode his struggle is to assert his own existential values
• The idea of existential issue is supported by following aspects
• old man is alone man engaged in an isolated , repetitive struggle that must end in defeat
• The novel only focus on the particular defeat , first catching the huge fish marlin and the old man fight with sharks
• Hemingway in his novel present the Realism and the naturalistic
• The man struggle is meaningless
Existentialism “Fairy Tale” • The written home in all from the listener come back to the real world
• Super Ego in unconscious are in Fairy tale far from reality
Conclusion
• Humans, as stated in Genesis, have been created by God to have dominion over all other living creatures, including the fish in the sea
• Yet humans like Santiago still suffer because of Adam and Eve's original sin of eating the apple from the tree of knowledge
