Lorenzo Lotto is one of greatest and most easily
recognisable masters of the Italian High Renaissance.
The present work, Holy Family with Saint Catherine
of Alexandria, displays the characteristics of Lotto’s
works which his contemporaries so admired: his
brilliant and high-keyed palette, the strong and
tender emotions conveyed by the figures, and his
unconventional approach to traditional Renaissance
subject matter. Signed ‘L.Lotus’, its simple, clear
colour scheme, reduction in detail, and broader
handling are characteristic of Lotto’s later works,
notably those produced in the 1540s.

This tender representation of the Annunciation
is a rare, early painting by the South
Netherlandish master Jan Provoost. One of
the most popular themes of Renaissance
painting, this Annunciation scene is set within
a contemporary domestic interior. The courtly,
idealised figures are modelled with extraordinary
delicacy, reflecting the influence of Northern
French painters such as Simon Marmion, who
may have been Provoost’s teacher.
此作以溫婉畫風描繪「天使報喜」的經典題材,為南
荷蘭藝術大師揚.普羅福斯特的罕見早期作品。「天
使報喜」是文藝復興畫家最普遍的繪畫主題之一,普

The Rothschild Prayerbook is a unique and
magnificent masterpiece of Renaissance art with
illustrious provenance and is the most famous
and valuable illuminated manuscript ever sold at
auction. With miniatures and borders on more
than 150 pages, this richly decorated manuscript
is one of the highest achievements of Flemish
Renaissance painting and includes illuminations
of unsurpassed beauty and refinement by Gerard
David, Simon Bening and Gerard Horenbout.
Made for a member of the imperial court in the
Netherlands it joined the fabled collections of
the Rothschild family in the 19th century and
achieved the highest price in the auction of their
treasures in 1999.

Painted in 1542, Christoph Amberger’s Portrait of
Barbara Schwarz depicts a woman of 35 years in
a lavish dress of black silk with minutely observed
folds almost filling the closely-cropped picture
rectangle. The quality of the fabric is rendered with
extraordinarily naturalistic fidelity to life; the sheen
of the silk cascades over the peaks and troughs of
the oversized crumpled sleeves. It is a study in blacks,
greys and silvered highlights, so detailed and complex
that it could almost be a Modernist abstract painting.
克里斯托夫.安伯格作於1542年的《芭芭拉.舒華
茲半身像》以一位身穿華麗黑絲裙的35歲女士為題,

Hidden from public view until recently, this
exquisite, luminous picture has now been fully
re-ascribed to the hand of one the greatest
and most influential landscape artists of 17th
century Europe. Commissioned in 1650
by the Roman Cardinal Domenico Cecchini
(1589–1656), the picture shows a touching
moment from the story of Saint Paula who is
about to embark on her journey to Jerusalem.
But, as so often with Claude, the real force
of the composition rests with his masterly
creation of atmosphere and light, the sun
bursting through the sky and illuminating
the shimmering crests of the waves. It is this
naturalistic depiction of sunlight and the notion
of an ideal landscape that has exerted such a
powerful influence on so many artists since.

Man with a Sword has been lauded for its
‘extraordinary power and depth of tone’ and is a
significant work, signed and dated by Rembrandt,
that sheds a fascinating new light on the greatest
of all Dutch artists and his studio practice. It
recently became the subject of a thorough
re-appraisal and scientific analysis revealing
that the painting began as a portrait, with the
head and hair of the sitter masterfully painted
by Rembrandt, and was later refashioned by his
studio into a historical portrait or tronie.

Léger’s canvas Les cylindres colorés was painted
in 1918, at one of the most important moments
in his career. The end of the First World War
brought a period of immense release for Léger,
reflected in the series of works that he created
during that time. Many are now in museums
throughout the world.

Promenade des oliviers is a rare and historic
painting by Henri Matisse dating from the pivotal
Summer in Collioure in 1905. The time spent in
Collioure marked the beginning of his Fauve period
and led to his becoming one of the prominent
leaders of the avant-garde of the 20th century.
昂利.馬諦斯作於1905年夏季的《奧利維爾大道》別
具歷史意義。當時馬諦斯於科利烏爾開始嘗試以野獸派
