Nimisha Saleem on May 5th 2017 at Abbasiya Community Hall at 6.00 pm onwards. Famous Music Director Berny (Berny-Ignatius) and Akbar Malappuram (Tabla) will also perform along with Miss Nimisha Saleem. Free entry for all music lovers in Kuwait. Legendary Music Composer M.S. Baburaj was born in Kozhikode and his greatest achievements was the introduction of Hindustani strains into Malayalam popular music. He suc- cessfully composed melodies based on Hindustani Ragas and blended Malayalam lyrics into them. Most of the lyrics were written by eminent Malayalam poets like P. Bhaskaran and Vayalar and most of his clas- sic duets sung by K.J. Yesudas & S. Janaki. BAIA to present Bugsy Malone: Audiences can enjoy a foaming frenzy at BAIA’s performances of Bugsy Malone on May 5 & 6. It is 1920’s New York and life on the streets is tough. It’s a dark night and mobster, Roxy Robinson, finds himself in the middle of the war for new turf! Fat Sam, who runs the most popular club in town, is at loggerheads with his arch rival, the dapper Dandy Dan who has manufactured a new weapon — the Spurge Gun! Armed with this new style machine- gun that has never before been seen before on the streets, Dan and his hoodlums are spreading fear and destruction wherever they go. Only the penniless, ex-boxer, Bugsy Malone can halt this havoc but can he do so without being ‘splurged’ himself. Whatever happens, Bugsy knows it’s going to take a lot more than cus- tard pies to defeat the rival mob and protect Fat Sam’s Grand Slam! A fantastic fun filled show with great songs and plenty of messy splurge where the cast of over 40 children have great fun playing all the adult parts. A show not to be missed – so book your tickets now! The Exhibition will be opened by the Honorary President of Al Sadu Society, Sheikha Altaf Salem Al- Sabah and The Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt Mr Yasser Atef. The opening will be followed by a talk on the art of the Egyptian Serma needle and thread work. This event is a celebration of historical crafts that have played important role in the Arab World. The celebration is under the auspices of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL). The workshops that will accompany the exhibition aim at teaching the art of this needlework and demonstrate its secrets to Sadu House community. The workshops will be conducted by professional craftsmen from Cairo. The craftsmen are members of the Serma craft community located at the footsteps of Al Azhar mosque, in Cairo, and who were once among the leading embroiderers of the Kiswa of the Kaaba. The workshops will span three days and aim to spread knowl- edge and promote this traditional craft. For years, the handmade gold metallic embroidered textiles known as Serma were among the most prestigious tableaus adorning the halls and household items; from curtains, to slippers to bed covers and cushions and above all royal costumes. And because it was a durable, expensive but stunning decorative technique, it was chosen to be used as the main decoration on the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba, at the heart of Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The art of embroidering in the Serma technique relies on the skill of the craftsmen, who need to raise the surface of the desired area at least a centimeter high, where this protrusion creates a visible impression and as it is embroidered in gold and silverfish threads, it reflects and attracts visitors to read and admire. The design is accordingly preset and the backing are prepared with cardboard, which is then finely ap- plied on the surface of the tableau. Each unit is thus carefully stitched back and forth till perfectly com- pleted. Although it is a meticulous craft, yet it is a distinguished one, and their professional craftsmen are considered artists with outstanding talents. Serma technique and worn by the royalty during the 18th and 19th centuries. This technique was also employed in the Coptic Christian church in Egypt and adorned their outfits and furnish- ings.
