SOPHOMORE ENCORE?• Guards Byron Frohnen and Giovanni De Nicolao recorded standout freshman campaigns in 2016-17 with the duo ranking as UTSA’s

third and fourth-leading scorers. In addition, Frohnen led the squad in rebounding at 6.7 boards per contest, while De Nicolao totaled a team-leading 108 assists. The duo were the only freshmen in Conference USA to start each of their team’s games. Frohnen, who was named a C-USA All-Freshman team member, finished the season averaging 8.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and a team-best 83.3 percent at the free-throw line. De Nicolao, a point guard, averaged 8.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per outing to go along with his 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals.

RETURNING STARTERS• UTSA returns three starters from a year ago in sophomore guards Byron Frohnen and Giovanni De Nicolao along with junior

forward Nick Allen. Frohnen (8.5 ppg/6.7 rpg), De Nicolao (8.2 ppg/3.3 apg) each started all 33 games, averaging 30.2 and 27.2 minutes, respectively. Allen (5.8 ppg/4.2 rpg) made 20 starts a year ago, averaging 20.8 minutes per contest.

RETURNING OFF THE BENCH• Five additional Roadrunners return from the 2016-17 squad. The quintet combined for 104 games played and seven starts. Senior

guard Austin Karrer (2.5 ppg/3.9 rpg) appeared in all 33 games last season with one start. Sophomore guard George Willborn III (4.5 ppg/1.8 rpg) saw action in 31 games with six starts and classmate Mitar Stanojevic (1.5 ppg/1.1 rpg), a forward, made 21 appearances off the bench. Senior center James Ringholt (0.4 ppg/0.5 rpg) played in 12 games, while junior guard Kyle Massie, a walk-on, logged action in seven contests.

THE NEWCOMERS• UTSA welcomes seven newcomers to the 2017-18 squad, including three freshmen and four transfers. The freshmen class includes

Texas high school guards Jhivvan Jackson (Euless Trinity HS) and Keaton Wallace (Richardson HS) along with Oklahoma high school forward Adrian Rodriguez (Union HS). Junior college transfer guard Deon Lyle (Cloud County [Kan.] CC) is joined by JUCO forward Toby Van Ry (Northwest [Kan.] CC). The Roadrunners also welcome the addition of four-year transfers Dane Buford (Oklahoma) and Kendell Ramlal (Texas State). Buford is required to sit out the 2017-18 season, while Ramlal joined the team in January while serving a year in residency last season.

• Named the sixth head men’s basketball coach in UTSA history on April 1, 2016.• Led UTSA to a plus-nine win improvement in first season, going from five wins in season prior to arrival to 14 wins.• Included in the 14 wins were a school record-tying eight Conference USA victories, the program’s first C-USA tournament

win and a triumph over I-35 rival Texas State. UTSA defeated three of the C-USA’s top four team with its wins over Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion and UTEP.

• Directed the Roadrunners to one of the most improved defensive teams in the nation in 2016-17. In the year prior to arrival, UTSA ranked in the bottom five of Division I, allowing opponents to shoot 50.8 percent from the field and 40.8 percent behind the arc en route to 84.3 points per game. Under Henson’s tutelage, the Roadrunners cut those numbers down to 43.4 percent shooting from the field, 35 percent behind the arc and just 69.4 points allowed per game. The team’s 69.4 points allowed ranked in the top third of Division I and UTSA limited opponents to fewer than 60 points nine times after doing so just once the year prior.

• Henson’s 2016-17 UTSA squad also ranked among the best in the nation on the glass, where it led Conference USA with 39.2 rebounds per outing, ranking 27th in NCAA. The Roadrunners were particularly effective on the offensive glass and ranked 26th in the nation with 12.9 offensive boards per game. The squad also ranked in the top 100 for total rebounds and defensive rebounds per game.

• Coached 2016-17 All-Freshman Team selection Byron Frohnen.• Spent five seasons on Lon Kruger's staff at Oklahoma (2011-16), helping guide the squad to four consecutive 20-win

seasons and NCAA Tournament berths, culminating this spring with the program’s fifth appearance in the Final Four and its first since 2002.

• Mentored 2015-16 National Player of the Year and Buddy Hield, who was selected No. 6 overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA Draft.

• Inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in October 2009 and the Kansas State Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2013.
