Negative Camber From the editor

A couple of months back Exhaust Notes added a new feature titled ―Mentioned in Despatches‖ (believe it or not, the phrase dates to the Royal Navy and British Army, but that‘s a long story for another time).

In it, we try to highlight some of the Triumph and LBC events in the Midwest, partly to give accolades to the host clubs, partly to give advance publicity to next year‘s event and partly to show the widespread enthusiasm in the country for our cars.

Well, as this edition goes to press, one of our big annual events is only two weekends away, the 28th Annual St Louis All

hold the meeting at the St Louis Triumph Hobby Shop. We‘ll use the evening to load the trailer and make final plans and preps for the ABCCS.

Immediately afterwards the membership at large segued into a spirited discussion on a subject of major import: what consti-tutes ―west county‖ vice ―south county.‖ Where‘s Fenton? Valley Park? Arnold? Bug Tussle?

After Craig got the members back on track, the conversation returned to food requirements for the car show. Per Joe Muel-ler, last year SLTOA sold out 90 burgers but wound up with at least two boxes of leftover bratwurst as well as spare hot dogs. He recommended purchasing 100 burgers this year, about half of the amount of dogs (80-90) and brats (100-125) while also cutting back on the amount of refreshments. We‘ll purchase the goods including buns at Sam‘s Club – Prez Craig will lead the raiding party – and stage from the Hobby Shop. One mem-ber volunteered the use of two of his 180 quart coolers (―You can put a person in one‖) for the event. Joe will also handle submitting the necessary paperwork for the food concession to the St Louis County Health Department.

Moving into events, publisher Creig Houghtaling handed out information and registration forms for the 8th Annual Brits in the Ozarks All-British Ccar and Cycle Show, 11-12 September in

Meeting Notes (Continued from page 1) Fayetteville, AR. Dick Knudson, ―well known MG expert and founder of the New England MG T Register‖ will serve as spe-cial guest for the event.

Chris Kresser noted it was possible to do four LBC events in three states over the weekends of 12-13 and 19-20 Septem-ber: Brits in the Ozarks, 12-13 September; the 23rd Annual Chi-cagoland British Car Festival, 13 September, Des Plaines; the St Louis All British Car & Cycle Show, 19 September; and the 21st Annual Indy British Motor Days in Indianapolis, 19-20 Sep-tember.

Back to the ABCCS, el Presidente advised tonight was the last chance to register as he had to deliver the final sign-ups on Wednesday. John Lamberg noted he‘d received three addi-

British Car & Motorcycle Show. We give great credit to the our friends with the MG Club of St Louis for putting on this event; they to do a bang-up job every year, starting with Friday night‘s BBQ at the host hotel in Westport and continuing through Sat-urday‘s festivities.

And, you, the membership of the St Louis Triumph Owners Association, deserve great credit for handling the food conces-sion on a yearly basis. As you can tell from this month‘s meet-ing notes, putting the vittles together for this major confab isn‘t always easy and requires a lot of planning/debate/discussion as well as a fair amount of logistics. However, I think if you ask anyone who attends—Triumph owner, LBC owner, the general public—they‘ll tell you how much they appreciate the effort.

Looking back at last year‘s event, covered by Kathy Kresser, it was interesting to see some of the more entertaining vehicles which participated. They included a supercharged lawnmower as well as a Humber...not a Snipe nor a Super Snipe, but a NS Mk.IV armored car. It‘ll be fun to see what unique and off-the-wall-not-often-seen-in-these-parts show up this year.

Finally, in her article Kathy also mentioned the group arrival of the contingent from Iowa. It‘ll be equally fun this year to look at the license plates and determine who drove the longest farthest to make the Creve Coeur Lake Park gathering. I hon-estly don‘t know if there is a ―longest distance‖ award but if all else fails, yr fthl ed will keep an eye out for cars with plates from neighboring states such as Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Tennessee or even by-God TEXAS. Shoot, there might even be a feature article in there somewhere.

The MG Club has prepped, we‘ve prepped, and I certainly hope you‘ve blocked out the entire day to stand by your car, assist with the concession and gener-ally enjoy LBCing. See y‘all there.

Negative Camber (Continued from page 1) Triumph Sports Owners Association

Question: Anyone out there remember the Triumph Sports Owners Association, AKA TSOA? It served as the factory-sponsored club for 26 years, from 1956 to 1981. With the de-mise of Triumph, the Vintage Triumph Register inherited the logo, badges and history of TSOA.

The newsletter is a major hoot and available online at www.templeoftriumph.org/tsoa/tsoa.html; take a look at it if you get the chance. In the meantime, watch for periodic short fea-tures about TSOA in Exhaust Notes, with particular emphasis on our predecessor club, TSOA of Greater St Louis.

Backwards Glance—The First and Last Triumph Sedans

We mentioned the Triumph Acclaim briefly in last month‘s

edition of Exhaust Notes; a license-built version of the Honda

Ballade (better known in the States as the Honda Civic sedan),

it was the last vehicle to bear the historic Triumph name. The

car went out

of production

in 1984, some

27 years fol-

lowing the US

introduction of

the first sedan

to display the

T r i u m p h

badge, the

Triumph 10.

D e v e l o p -

ment of the

Triumph 10

started with

the Standard

8, introduced

in 1953 as the

first all-new

design from

S t a n d a r d -

Triumph post-World War II. Its unitized body was rather stark;

the car featured sliding windows, no grill, no chrome, appar-

ently no fun but Standard followed up with the Standard 10,

which added most of the ―upscale‖ items. The lasting feature

was the 803cc, 26hp four, with a bore and stroke of 58mm by

76 mm (the Standard 10‘s bore was increased to 63mm, for

948cc). This engine, along with the gearbox and differential

developed for the 10, provided the foundation for just about

every Triumph that followed.

In 1957 Standard decided to take advantage of Triumph‘s

popularity in the US, slapped a Triumph badge on the 10 and

shipped it overseas. It came to these shores with two body-

styles – a four-door sedan and ―estate wagon‖ – usually in two-

tone paint. The options included whitewalls, chrome wheel trim

rings, a heater (!), radio and a semi-automatic transmission

designated the ―Trimatic,‖ which featured clutch actuation via a

button in the shift knob. The car had a top speed of about 70,

could accelerate from 0 to 50 in about 18 seconds and re-

turned 40 mpg. Prior to the end or production, Standard-

Triumph dressed up the front end of the car with the somewhat

busier sheet metal

and trim from the

Standard Pennant.

According to the

Vintage Triumph

Register, sales of

the 10 in the colo-

nies proved mod-

est: 9907 sedans

and 7351 wagons; however, it set the stage for the Triumph

Herald and a long line of other vehicles (BTW, VTR also states

quite strongly that the car never received the designation

―TR10‖).

Fast forward 18 years to 1978. British Leyland wasn‘t quite in

its death throes, but it was in what could be termed a death spi-

ral, due to severe cutbacks in the funding of engineering and

product development. BL started casting about for a foreign

partner which would enable it to quickly (and cheaply) field new,

more modern vehicles. At the end of 1979, the company

reached an agreement with Honda to build a variation of the

Ballade/Civic.

The first Triumph Acclaim, badge-engineered from the second

-generation Ballade, went into the showrooms in mid-1981.

According to one source the car was quite good and marked ―a

major turnaround point for BL…with the car sporting good reli-

ability and build quality from the outset. It paved the way for the

Honda-based, Rover-badged cars.‖ Conversely, one critic

stated, ―Some people will see the project as a realistic response

to the rapidly changing nature of the world automotive busi-

ness…others will find it unacceptable and, to put it crudely, de-

scribe it as prejudicial to the Triumph name, a ‗sell-out‘ to the

Japanese and in conflict with BL‘s opposition to the import of

Japanese cars into Britain.‖

The new Triumphs came with a

twin-carbureted 1355cc which gen-

erated 70 hp, good enough to move

the car from 0-60 in about 12.7

seconds. An ―Avon‖ edition offered

leather, a wood dashboard, wood

door caps, two-tone paint and op-

tional turbocharging. The car sold well – not spectacularly, but

well – for three years, with a total of 133,625 built; that made it

the second best selling Triumph of all time, behind the Herald

1200. .

However, when Honda developed the third generation Bal-

lade/Civic, BL – now known as Austin-Rover – decided to retire

the Triumph name and use the new car as the foundation for the

Rover 200 series. Production of the Acclaim ended in the sum-

mer of 1984, making it most definitely the last Triumph (by com-

parison, the TR6 went out of production in July 1976; the Stag in

1977; the Spitfire and Dolomite in 1980, concurrent with Ley-

land‘s closure of its Canley factory; and the TR7 and TR8 joined

the choir invisible in 1981).

Apparently no Acclaims ever made it to the United States al-

though I suppose one could take a second-generation Civic

sedan and put a Triumph badge on it. However, in England,

they remain popular as used cars and even have an enthusiasts

club, appropriately named the Triumph Acclaim Owners Club.

You can call it up at www.triumphacclaim.org/index.htm.

Mentioned in Despatches

Congratulations to member Chris Kresser, who took second place in his class at the Christian Brothers College car show on 9 May. His TR3A was lumped into a single class with MGs, a Sunbeam Tiger, a Citroen Traction Avante, a new Aston Martin and several other cars but he still pulled it off.

As this issue of Exhaust Notes went to press, the Detroit Tri-umph Sports Car Club was preparing for the 27th annual ―All English Real Battle of the Brits‖ with the Windsor-Detroit MG Club, scheduled for Sunday, 13 September in Orchard Lake, MI. Last year the MG owners turned out 110 (!) cars to 107 Triumphs (!!); as of 26 August, the Triumphs had a slight edge in this year‘s event registrations, 93 to 89. At stake is the Bat-tle of the Brits Participation Award. The DTSC took five out of six between 1982 and 1987 but since the resurrection of the traveling award in 2007, the MGs have taken the title twice.

BTW, the Detroit group celebrated its 50th anniversary over the weekend of 13-14 June with a tour of southern Michigan, including a run from Lake St Clair to the shore of Lake Michi-gan, a winery tour and other activities. Congrats and tip of the SLTOA hat to DTSCC on their anniversary!

Brit and former Triumph employee John McCartney‘s well into his charity drive around the United States and Canada in his recently restored Stag. He departed Daytona Beach on 27 June and by the end of August had wended his way around the eastern part of the country to Memphis, where members of the British Sports Car Club Ltd—assisted by some LBC members from Nashville—treated him to a BBQ dinner.

McCartney arrived in Omaha—via Texas and Colorado, if you can believe that—on 27 August, hosted by the Nebraska Triumph Drivers. From there he sallied north towards Winni-peg, Manitoba prior to turning west to Vancouver, British Co-lumbia. McCartney plans to arrive in San Luis Obispo in time for Triumphest. You can follow his progress at www.triumphtransamerica.org.uk/.

Finally, the Quad City British Auto Club held Autofest 2009 in Davenport, IA, on 9 August. They received two excellent write-ups in the Quad-City Times in and around turning out around 85 cars. The Triumph totals came in at one TR2; five TR3s; three TR6s; one each TR7 and TR8; three Spitfires...and a ‗78 Triumph Bonneville. From the report, it looked like quite a show

Local TR3B Takes 3rd in

National Show

By Charlie Key

It was Wednesday and I received a phone call from Aldo Magnani, member of SLTOA. ―Hey Charlie, can you make a house call?‖ I asked, ―What‘s up?‖

Aldo said his TR3 wouldn‘t start and hadn‘t run in a long time, the battery is dead. The car was restored by British Cars of America back in 1998 and had been parked for several years. I said sure, we will be there in the late afternoon. A transporter was picking the car up the next morning, to be hauled to Mary-land , to Aldo‘s son, John. He would be driving the car to the national Triumph meet to be judged in the Concours d‘Ele-gance.

A quick clean-up by John after the car arrived in Maryland and off he went, to the Triumph Register of American National Meet 2009 (TRA 2009) in Charles Town, WV. The car ran wonderfully the entire trip. When John arrived, he parked the car in his spot and wandered off to see all of the other great cars, never thinking he had a chance at any prize.

Later, after an enjoyable day, he was surprised to have his name called, taking a third place at the ―big show.‖ John called Aldo right away to tell his dad he has a truly great car. Father and son are still beaming with the excitement of the TR3B.

Here is a note from Aldo and pictures from John. We all love it when a plan comes together.

Subj: My 1963 TR3B Date: 6/22/2009 12:05:36 CDT

Hi folks—Remember me and my re-stored 1963 TR3B? Guess what. Said car was transferred to my son in Maryland and he entered it in this year’s Na-tional Tri-umph meeting and took 3rd place in the c o n c o u r s e judging! You may remember the TR3B had a total restoration done by Charlie Key at British Cars of America! This award is a testament to his knowledge of British cars and his ability to restore them to original condition.

My sister, the owner, has lost her garage and needs to get it sold. She has owned the car since 1979 and is the second owner, but has owned it for 30 years. No idea how much it is worth because it needs to be fixed up. We have the hard top for the car as well. Patsy Wolf (770)649-0308.
