Prime Cattle to 236 ppk and £1606 Barren Cows 179ppk and £1356
Monday saw prime cattle rise to a top of 236ppk for an outstanding 538kg British Blue cross heifer from Rosie
Fishleigh of Sourton Cross which realised £1266 followed by a couple of well finished Limousin heifers from
Rosie which sold to 223ppk and £1377. Top total price realised was a decent £1606 (742kg x 217ppk) for a
smart Aberdeen Angus bullock from Keith and Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey with other Angus bullocks off the
same farm to £226ppk and their best British Blue steer grossing £1526 (702kg x 218ppk). Sue Cleave of
Moretonhampstead saw the better of a super run of South Devon steers rise to 219ppk and £1412 whilst
Stephen Downing of Diptford also saw his best bullock reach 219ppk for a 668kg Limousin that levelled out at
£1459 whilst Graham Tancock of Broadclyst saw his brave 708kg South Devon crossbred steer return £1433.
Barren cows in short supply this week with the very best selling to £1356 (760kg x 179ppk) for a well-covered
Charolais from Keith and Tony Pook of Galmpton, Brixham followed by another of the same breed from the
Pook’s fetching £1317 (864kg x £1317). Luke Knight, Fluxton brought a couple of his usual grand South Devon

Prime Lambs to £135.50 & 263ppk Cull Ewes to £159 & Rams to £150
Just shy of 2000 sheep on Monday consisted of 1139 prime lambs that were 10 pence dearer on the week to average
243ppk or £106 per head including the few lighter weights and
underfinished stores which seem mandatory this time of year. Top
money went to Rex Vincent of North Tawton with a single 64kg
Zwartbles cross Oxford Down at £135.50 followed by the Browse
family of Butterleigh with a pair of 56kgs at £133 and Pauline Scanes
of Cheriton Bishop had a single 55kg Charollais reach £127. Other
overweights from £115 to £119.50. Andrew & Della Carter sold a
smart pair of 50kg lambs at £124.50 followed by Phil & Richard Keast
of North Tawton with 47kgs at £122.50 (261ppk) as well as their
49kgs at £121 as Terry Stuckey of Brixham sold 46kg Blue Texel
crosses at £121 or a sale topping 263ppk. Other 49-50kg lambs at
£120.50 for both Ray & Sylvia Toms of Cheriton Bishop and Mark
Harvey of Slapton. Also at 261ppk were smart 44kgs lambs from Tom
Cleave of Holne realising £115 whilst more 44-45kg lambs sold at
£114.50 for all Barry Mildon of Cadbury, Andy & Wendy Reed of
Blackborough and Phillip Rowell of Crockernwell. 43kgs to £110 for
both Rodney Cleave of Denbury and Dave Chapple of Cadeleigh as
Jack & Georgie Warwick of Moretonhamsptead sold 40kgs at £100.50.
Lighter lambs slightly fewer in number but still several lacking finish,
best finished sorts from Phillip Dennis of North Tawton at 39kgs reached £98 as 38kgs rose to £95.50 for R & M Sweet of Dunsford and 37kgs sold to £91 for Stacey James of Holsworthy.
**Abattoirs are requesting that muddy lambs are belly clipped with a double comb width up the middle of the belly. Housed or grass reared lambs needn’t be bellied**
818 cull sheep were a slightly less fiery trade but we still saw 11 pens over £130 to a top of £159 for a single Texel ewe
from Martin & Russell Gillbard of Morchard Bishop who had another at £148 and Roger Heggadon of Broadwoodkelly
sold smart continental ewes in small well sorted bunches at £155, £138, £133 & £130, Cecil & Ruth Partridge of Calverleigh
sold strong Suffolk cross ewes well at £131 and both Mark Hayman & Abi Dart of Bradninch and Stacey James of
Holsworthy realised £130 with their best continental types. The general run of Suffolk & Texel cross ewes would be £5-
£8 less on the week and £110 to £122 and similarly Mules would be £10 less and regularly in the £90’s, topping at £101
for Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne. Plain grazing type ewes still keenly sought with Mules often £60 to £75 and better
bred lean ewes often early £90’s. Hill ewes to £97.50 for a pen of tremendous Cheviots from Tom Cleave of Holne whilst
lighter ewes still a strong trade seeing Scotch ewes reach £63.50 for Ron Wonnacott & Sons of Chagford and framey
Herdwicks peak at £57.50 for Peter Heard & family of Okehampton. Rams still in great demand with a Texel at £150 for
John Shelley of Shobrooke, £130 for a Romney from Tripp Bros & Sons of Dunsford and the majority of others in this section were smaller whethers trading well and in the £70’s, £80’s & £90’s. Overall average was £11 less at £82.82
**REMINDER- SHEEP PRESENTED WITH FLY STRIKE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED INTO THE MARKET.**

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull
sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of
trade.
